Random Thought/Question
— Ace

Is there a word -- maybe a German word, because they have a word for everything -- meaning "the pleasure experienced from hearing again something you already knew?"

If not, there should be.

I used to watch the same three documentaries on Boston's Big Dig, a few times each. It didn't bother me that I'd already heard it all before. That actually became the good thing -- it was nice that I'd heard it all before.

Take Shark Week. I'm thinking most guys who watch Shark Week know most of the shark trivia they're going to hear. But they love it just the same. Or maybe because it's the same.

This might be more common with men, who are known to watch the same movies or TV episodes repeatedly. Why is awesome the hundredth time John McClane shoots Hans Gruber? I don't know, it just is. It's comforting, maybe.

69 I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said "yes" to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle. I'm here a week now... waiting for a mission... getting softer. Every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute Charlie squats in the bush, he gets stronger. Each time I looked around the walls moved in a little tighter.

70 It's comforting, maybe.

"Belated mastery" is the standard term psychology-talkin' guys (used to) use for that sort of feeling. Seeking it is usually a sign of some really bad shit in your head—shit you're compulsively re-living or re-repressing—but it can also just be a thing you like to do because it's a thing you like to do.

Basically, you experience things better when you're more sure of what you're experiencing, so to feel that betterness ("mastery"), you repeat things. It relieves anxiety. Or it makes it worse. Or it avoids it, which makes it worse, unless it doesn't.

The gigantic German word for it is probably in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, but that's like eighty feet away, so pffft.

I watched a news program about the Big Dig.  They were saying how much overbudget it was.  Then they showed a bunch of workers who spent a work day at a pub instead of being on the job.  Then they went on to say how common that was.  Then they were telling that since the Big Dig was mostly funded by federal tax dollars it was costing all of us an ungodly amount of money while union workers were screwing off and taking as long as they could to complete the thing so the money train would keep on rolling.  So the whole thing was nothing but a make work program for an area of the country that had political influence (Ted Kennedy) to help a sagging Boston economy.

Was Obama up there when this crap was going on?  It might explain where he gets some of his bright ideas from.

I don't know a lot about it but what I've heard is this: The Big Dig had to be dug through mud and Bechtel figured out that it could adapt a method they had used on the Hoover Dam to insert tubing into the pipes and cool the setting concrete so it would not form cracks, into a method to freeze the mud and allow for forward progress on the Big Dig. This was of course brilliant, but it came with a change order. Bing or Google the change order and the original contract. You'll see a couple of boats. 109 What do Warren Buffet and Tim Geithner have in common ? ... not paying taxes Billionaire Warren Buffett says folks like him should have to pay more taxes -- but it turns out his firm, Berkshire Hathaway, hasn’t paid what it’s already owed for years. That’s right: As Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson notes, the company openly admits that it owes back taxes since as long ago as 2002. “We anticipate that we will resolve all adjustments proposed by the US Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) for the 2002 through 2004 tax years ... within the next 12 months,” the firm’s annual report says. It also cites outstanding tax issues for 2005 through 2009. Obvious question: If Buffett really thinks he and his “mega-rich friends” should pay higher taxes, why doesn’t his firm fork over what it already owes under current rates?

112 Well, Silver Spike was way too, sorta incestuous with the interaction between the White Rose and Raven, that turned me off, but the main character was built excellently.

The last 4 were also well written, though "She is the Darkness" that's the one with the Seige right?  or is that "Bleak Seasons?"

Still good books, but one person described it, and is correct, and why I didn't list them as the over and over again type is because it's "Agony as Opera."

Just wondering. Overall I think GC did an excellent job on the whole series. Bleak Seasons was a bit difficult to get through the fist time but got easier to understand after more than one reading.

Incestuous relationship with Darling? Darling was not his daughter. She was a child rescued in a village after the limper and some of his soldiers destroyed it.

Not to belabor the point Douglas. Nowhere in the Silver Spike is there any hint of a relationship between Raven and Darling. Go back to The White Rose when Darling is speaking to Croaker about Raven being alive. That is the only time Darling ever made Her interest known. Raven faked his death again the next day.

Darling and Case end up together at the end of that book.

I'm not sure if you are 100% correct in some of your estimations but you do, many times, focus my attention on the bones of any argument.

You are far more sensitive and connected than I could ever be, plus you are very gifted at communicating.

128 Women absolutely do this, too.  Why do you think romance, which is 90% trope, is the most popular genre in book publishing?  Sometimes it's comforting to know when you pick up the book that the villain will be defeated, the heroine will get a good fracking by a hot hero, and the story will end with a happily ever after.

That's just one example that certainly doesn't apply to all women, but I'm sure most women have something comparable.

134 On the one hand, our Atlases are productive, entrepreneurial people who appreciate the singularity of the American experiment and the opportunity to profit and thrive, even when coming out of a severe recession. Real opportunity, they know well, is often best found in crises, not just in continued prosperity.

But, on the other hand, they are deeply worried that the rules of the game are changing for only the second time in American history and that they are unliked, targeted and to be punished for being successful. The result is not that the private sector is fleeing the US (where would one go?). Nor are entrepreneurs and go-getters shutting down their businesses that they have built from the ground up.

Instead, what we are witnessing is a sort of shrug, a pause, best summarized millions of times over as something like “I’m hoarding cash, hunkering down, and am going to wait this bad bunch out.”

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronauts may need to take the unprecedented step of temporarily abandoning the International Space Station if last week's Russian launch accident prevents new crews from flying there this fall.

Until officials figure out what went wrong with Russia's essential Soyuz rockets, there will be no way to launch any more astronauts before the current residents have to leave in mid-November.

The unsettling predicament comes just weeks after NASA's final space shuttle flight.

142 @146 and also after a "technical" delay for SpaceX's COTS3 qualifications.   As _I_ just as a fanboy, they are still testing, but priorities are priorities, If SpaceX doesn't rate COTS3 cert, then situation changes, and the delays are 100% political based on my reading, of course they don't say it, but that is the clear implication.

If COTS contracts can be filled on a cost per basis, then SpaceX will ramp their Launch abort system, and their Falcon heavy.  They don't say that, but that's how I read it.

This might be more common with men, who are known to watch the same movies or TV episodes repeatedly. Why is awesome the hundredth time John McClane shoots Hans Gruber? I don't know, it just is. It's comforting, maybe.

Posted by: Ace at 12:13 AM I agree with Y-not. My friends, the female ones, and I all re-read certain books over and over.  We also watch some movies over and over, although my choices are more eclectic than most of theirs(T2, Adventures in Baby-sittting, Pride and Prejudice for example.)  I think this isn't male or female but as you said a sort of comforting re-live that good or exciting moment thing.  After all why are the re-reuns every year of The Ten Commandments, Gone With the Wind,The Wizard of Oz so popular?  For that matter why are re-runs popular at all?  Maybe for the reasons you stated?

Kinda like reading political and economic blogs, Ace. Left, right, center, Keynesian or Austrian, Elliot Wave or Fan charts, the arguments are always the same. Change the nouns and verbs, cut and paste from boilerplate, and viola! Steal someone else's inept photoshop. Add Kittens and Puppies! The Insight of the Day! The Drama!

Hell, Transhumanists, relgious, science and tech blogs do it, too.

The outcome is always the same. Nothing gets resolved. The plot and storyline get lost in the details. Loose threads are left dangling all over the place. Brain-dead, zombie sophistries overpower the heros and heroines of reason and logic. Good is defeated by evil...

But...I read it all, very day, none-the-less.

 I don't have to watch a movie.

The Zombie Apocalypse is already here, in real life, each and every day. ...and I can't turn my eyes away from it.
