Rasmussen: Gingrich Gains On Obama With Independents, Now Only Trailing By Six
— Ace

That's a dramatic improvement, since he had been trailing by 21.

Three weeks ago, RasmussenÂ’s poll of likely voters showed Speaker Newt Gingrich trailing President Barack Obama by a whopping 27 percentage points (51 to 24 percent) among independent voters. Now, Rasmussen shows, ObamaÂ’s lead over Gingrich has shrunk to just 6 points (41 to 35 percent) among independents. Obama also leads Gingrich by 6 points (44 to 38 percent) among all likely voters.

Ben notes that Newt must be moving into the Not-Romney Next To Rise position, because fanatical Romney supporter Jen Rubin just happens to write a blistering attack on him today.

By the way: Rubin won't say which of these attacks are fed to her by Romney, but by refusing to say, she seems to concede that some of them do. So I'm going to go ahead and assume that this is the story Romney planted today.

And independents, by 50-40, say Obama does not deserve a second term.

Interestingly, in this poll too, the sub-poll of independents tracks the overall poll of Americans perfectly -- in the overall poll of all Americans, the split is also 50% saying Obama doesn't deserve a second term, 40% saying he does.

So independents seem a strong predictor of where the overall country is.

Thanks to Jammie Wearing Fool, which on Monday moved to a new location, and also adopted one of those professional looking magazine-style looks, which, geeze, I really need to do one of these days.

And thanks to Gabe for the Obama poll.

Pretty encouraging poll.  If I had to vote in the primary today it would be for Newt Gingrich.  I now believe, though it will be a mighty tough battle, that he can win in the general election.  If you want a shot at any sort of comprehensive conservative transformation of our government, I really think he's the only one who can pull off that task.

He's been vetted too.  Over and over again.  And a lot of the negative reputation he has earned will be revealed as pure horseshit.  The "divorce papers served to the wife dying of cancer" lie is a prime example.

88 Please do not switch to the magazine format. This is not a news site, it's a blog. That format makes quick reading and perusing next to impossible and I don't think it will smoothly integrate with the group thing you've got going. Why are people repeating this like it's new information?  We've know for at least a WEEK that she was a federal government employee.  But she's a career civil servant, not a political appointee.  It makes no more sense to refer to her as someone who works in the "Obama Administration" than it does to refer to every employee of NIH during the years 2000-2008 as employees in the "Bush Administration."

Would you be less likely to believe, say, a communications director for the NRA if the purported perv were a democrat running for high office?  Unless you have direct evidence indicating she's doing this for some benefit to her, stop with the innuendos- either Cain did it, or he didn't, and blaming those accusing him isn't going to help (even if you're right).

Cain stepped hip deep with knee-high waders, and its his own fault.  He could have stopped this cold (presuming he's innocent) last Monday or Tuesday, and he didn't.

By the way, for those who think that 1997 allegations (after he left the restaurant association) couldn't have been politically-motivated, don't forget that Cain was already a figure of revulsion among Democrats for his pwnage of Clinton in that healthcare townhall.

I think this is primarily due to the fact that after seeing and hearing sufficiently from Rick Perry, a large number of voters have concluded that (to be perfectly blunt) he's a dummy.

Democrats, Independents, and even Republicans don't want a person who reminds of them of GWB.  They want someone who is smart, articulate, and conservative.

We are in a critical fiscal crisis, I'm not the Grinch's fan by any means, BUT he is better than Romney, in that he has shown he has the nads to stand up and make hard cuts in the budget and get the damn thing balanced. Seems like he was the last one to make that balanced budget miracle happen. That's not just a feather in his hat, it's the whole damn peacock, while strutting. Yeah he has a lot of RINO in him, and says things on occasion that makes me want to punch him in the face, but overall beats the crap out of Romney on that point alone. Posted by: RushBabe at November 08, 2011 12:29 PM (tQHzJ)"

I think the path to destruction is broad and traveled by many.  I do not think an accuser's background having a child paternity issue means they are whores who can't accuse folks of harassment.

In fact, I suspect a lot of women have great instincts and avoid creeps and harassment, and also have sterling backgrounds, and a lot of women make a series of mistakes.  So Bialek's 'background' doesn't conflict with her claims.

We all know what this really is.  This is the ruination of her character because she is now the 'enemy'.  We should be very, very careful about that.  That's one of the things that always ticked me off about Clinton's circle.  Any girl who came along and was the fourth or whatever accuser would be called trash.  Or deranged stalker, or whatever.  And of course, their lives are badly affected for it.

Why should that be?  Because Cain is popular?  I think we should be more gentle about it.  What if she's telling the truth?  What if there is some truth to these multiple settlements, too?  What if Cain's time away from his wife led him to make some human mistakes?  If that's the case, we don't want to convince the country that the hard right is just as zealous as the hard left.

Haven't you taken pride in how great the Tea Parties are compared to the occupy kooks?  How we don't cross the line, how we don't hate, how we are reasonable?  Let's be careful.

“Those complaints were resolved in an agreement with her acceptance of a monetary settlement,” Bennett said. “She and her husband see no value in revisiting this matter now, nor in discussing this matter further, publicly or privately. In fact, it would be extremely painful to do so.”

Or the further benefit to Obama and what ever political operative's ball-sack she happens to be currently tonguing?

159 In my opinion, Newt is better than Romney.  He is a compromise for me, on many issues.  He's made several mistakes.

But Newt is worth supporting if the alternative is Romney.

I strongly prefer the less slick but more accomplished Perry.  However, I think Newt's heart is in the right place, and he's smart, and we sure could do a lot worse.

Posted by: Dustin at November 08, 2011 09:01 AM (rQ/Ue)

160 I think this is primarily due to the fact that after seeing and hearing sufficiently from Rick Perry, a large number of voters have concluded that (to be perfectly blunt) he's a dummy.

There was a time in America where common sense and accomplishments were valued much higher than glibness and a silver tongue.  There was a time when we didn't seek out ubermensches to rule over us.  There was a time when we associated such features with politicians (a derogatory term) and corruption.

That time is past, I suppose, give us Benito!

163 Ace, re the layout, there's only one change I would like to see but, frankly, I love the site as it is. We don't come here for high-design.

It would be great if there were a bit of horizontal format to the posts that didn't suppress a relatively new thread further down the page. I'm picturing something like a bar across the top with links to the most recent posts. I bet it would cut down on OT comments and allow those who would like to discuss a particular topic to remain current. I hate posting a comment and then finding out it was a dead-thread.

When there's no evidence to support a person's claim his or her background and past is always going to become an issue.

166 49.Probably the biggest problem with a Cain nomination is that all the voters who decide the election--you know, the Independents, the occasional voters, and the cretins--will confuse "Cain" with "McCain."

They don't follow politics and they'll think they're just voting the same ballot they voted three years ago.

Really. They're that stupid.

I don't know sparky, this Independent voted for McCain last time, which in hindsight seems a lot smarter than the socon hissy fit strategy of not voting at all.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Washington-based federal court on Tuesday rejected Texas' request to approve new political districts without a trial.

In a brief ruling, the court agreed with the U.S. Department of Justice that the GOP-led Legislature used an improper standard for determining whether the new districts discriminate against minorities. The order clears the way for a trial.

182 No.  That's a fallacy.  They were going to bury him.  Even if he crushed allegations #1 and #2, the others were going to come.  He would not be able to stop it.

See, here's the thing, I see roughly 3 ways he could have handled this and come out (relatively) clean.  Two indicate he's innocent (or relatively so) and the third... you'll see.

1) Go full belligerent (okay, stay diplomatic, but you know what I mean).  Issue a flat denial- or at least one that says "reasonable people" would not agree that you'd sexually harassed anyone, and then say you will not address the issue further until the accusers let themselves be known and provide specifics.

2) Come completely clean: admit the instances that they're claiming, and give your side.  Explain why you don't think it rose to the level of sexual harassment.

3) Admit & Embrace:  Say, "Yes, it happened, I was ashamed of it then and I'm ashamed of it now, if I could go back in time and make it better, I would.  I cannot, however.  So I will do what I can do- and what I can do is continue to try to steer this great Country back on a course of solvency and self-sufficiency."  (Or something)

Now, #3 crumbles when someone says he sexually assaulted her.  #2 could go either way- but I'd be more inclined to believe him when he denied it.  When someone has been truthful with you previously, you tend to believe they're being truthful with you later.  #1 Would hold up pretty well under the sexual assault charge- repeat the denial, and demand proof.

The main problem that Cain is running into (aside from his constantly shifting stance on the problem, the fact he tried to deflect attention to a political rival, and the fact he tried to use the Race Card) is that he allowed it to remain "accusation = proof."  He needed to say, "Hey, as the accused, here, I demand to see any evidence of my wrongdoing.  And you can't provide any because I didn't do it."

And, yes, #1 would have to be nuanced enough to take into account the settlement/agreement with that first woman, but that's not an impossible line to walk.

Well sure.  I don't see the nutjob angle, but I do see the financial one, obviously.  Allred is no friend of the Tea Party, but she is a friend to the dishonest who seek a payday, and she is a friend to the left.

And that is worse than an accuser being trashy.  The 'trashy background' angle does Cain no good.  In fact, it does him harm and does his accuser harm at the same time, because it reduces everyone and is totally irrational.

The real question is why, of all the million lawyers in the country, did this person settle on Allred.  My guess is that she didn't choose Allred.  Allred wanted this case and investigated, pushed insider pals, paid staffers, until finally she found one of these accusers, and paid her too, and then did what she does: made a big show and sprinkled on the gross sleaze like she always does.

That is pure speculation on my part, but just noting this is an Allred operation is enough to get every reasonable person's eyes rolling.

First off: Politically speaking: absolutely.  You and I may not like it, but it's true.  Suck it up and start living in the real world.

Lesson one of political crisis management: "Get out in front."  If Cain never did anything (or, at least, nothing that anyone reasonable would call sexual harassment) he should have said so from the beginning and demanded evidence of the accusations.  If he never did anything, they wouldn't be able to provide proof.

The problem here is that Cain himself had 4 different versions of his story just on the first day.  Then he tried to deflect attention from the scandal to a political rival, and then played the race card.  Those are all things that make fairly reasonable people believe you're guilty.

In fact, based on his behavior (just as though I were looking at, say, Anthony Weiner's behavior, or Stephen Chu's, or even that Governor of SC who got caught philandering) I would say this:  His behavior makes me believe that, at least while a powerful CEO of a large Trade Organization/Lobbying Organization in Washington, DC, Herman Cain was a serial womanizer.  I do not think he attempted to rape anyone, but I can completely see how a womanizer who thought he had "bought" a woman (upgraded room, nice diner and drinks, ride home) would try to put the moves on her physically, and then run off with his nose in a sling when she said "no."

Now, this would not hold in a court of law.  Indeed, if ever viewed strictly that way, I could only agree with you- there is no proof of his misbehavior.  The sad fact is that a political campaign is not a court of law, and the court of public opinion does assume guilt until innocence is proven.  As any number of modern court cases (which were thought to be "slam dunks" but were then found "not guilty") could show.  Casey Anthony, anyone?

The real question is why, of all the million lawyers in the country, did this person settle on Allred.  My guess is that she didn't choose Allred.  Allred wanted this case and investigated, pushed insider pals, paid staffers, until finally she found one of these accusers, and paid her too, and then did what she does: made a big show and sprinkled on the gross sleaze like she always does.

She contacted the other ladies lawyer first.

She was asked that and when she started to answer...if she was the one who reached out to that other lawyer....Allred wouldn't let her answer.

Oh come on now, Allred's main statement for the client that she wants to 'help' Herman Cain.....all that is is PROOF that the whole thing is a lie.  That statement had to be made to protect Allred and her client as that is all that needs to be done to keep Cain from persuing liable charges.  When you are a political figure you have to show the woman intended to cause harm.  Allred knows that and so she has the client lie and tell the media that far from harm, she wants "to help" Cain.

If the charges were true, then there would be no need to protect from the 'cause harm' portion of liable.  Obviously, Allred knows the charges are false so she had to stand the table on this leg.

From the moment I scored a 3 on the Apgar test I've been a true conservative patriot.

My purity of conservative ignorance has led me to support a Gingrich-Cain-Cain-Gingrich candidacy.

First and foremost, punks, we need a D.C. outsider for the top of the ticket.  We're anti-establishment.  Rush Limbaugh told me so.  Well, folks, in his 20 years in Congress nobody, I mean nobody, fought harder against the D.C. establishment than Newt Gingrich.

The next most important thing in choosing our nominee is a track record of true conservative executive accomplishments.  Newt's track record speaks for itself.  Hell, while that vaccine pusher Perry has been vacationing down in Taxes Newt's been fighting in the trenches, writing books, lecturing to college kids, shopping at Tiffany's.

Next we need someone who can beat Obama.  Even I can figure out the November general election is more important than the primary and I'm literally retarded.  Folks, Newt's a political juggernaut.  Hell, back in the day Newt had so much political juice he never even bothered attempting a run for governor, for U.S. Senator, or for the presidency; that sort of thing would have been unfair to his opponents.  Since Newt has been out of politics entirely for over a decade his appeal to the public has gotten even stronger.

Gingrich-Cain-Cain-Gingrich, '12.  Nut up or shut up!

The individual, now in his 20s and living in Lycoming County, contacted state police at Montoursville Sunday after learning about the charges against Sandusky, said Lt. David Young, commander of the criminal investigation section at Troop F Montoursville.

The man had remained silent about the alleged incidents that occurred in the early 2000s, not telling his parents or authorities, Young said. The man alleged acts similar to those alleged against Sandusky in the statewide grand jury presentment, but Young declined to provide specifics.

At the time, the individual was involved in The Second Mile children's charity founded by Sandusky, Young said.

Information the man provided investigators has been sent to state police at Rockview because the alleged incidents occurred in Centre County, he said.

Possibly.  And that would have helped if Cain had already "cleared the air" of the other 2 charges.  See, then Cain could have said something like, "Look, I've already addressed the two actual incidents.  They didn't happen as advertised; there is no "there" there.  Now another woman suddenly appears with notorious gold-digging lawyer Gloria Allred and accuses me not of more "sexual harassment" but now of full on sexual assault.  You will excuse me if I start looking for the chains linking these accusations.  Ms. Allred- produce proof of your clients accusations, or recant."

Unfortunately, he didn't address the first two head-on, so now everything looks like damage control.  And it doesn't matter if he's as pure as the fresh-driven snow.

294 I think you're living in a fantasy world regarding what will and will not kill a story the media wants to run with.

Oh, the media may still run with it- you're right that he can't control that.  But handled properly he's no longer the "creepy-older guy preying on young women," he's the "politician accused of wrongdoing by unsubstantiated rumors."

And I tend to think that, in face of that, they would drop it.  They'd try to find something else, then, but they'd drop that particular line of attack.  Probably.  If he'd handled it well.

295 How did he do that?  I read that when the behavior was reported to  him he advised his superiors and that the guilty party had already left. If you are saying he should have contacted the police, I have mixed feelings since what he heard was hearsay.

Posted by: kansas at November 08, 2011 01:27 PM (mka2b)

According to Mary Katherine Ham, Paterno had a legal obligation to report it.  Although, again, if hearsay, I'm not sure that that still holds.

What do the state laws say? From what I'm hearing it seems that if you 'suspect' child abuse to be happening, you have to report it to the police. So it does not have to be confirmed, just a suspicion of abuse is all it takes.

Usually it's just that you have to report it to "the authorities."  So reporting to his AD technically covered his requirements.

By the way, for those who think that 1997 allegations (after he left the restaurant association) couldn't have been politically-motivated, don't forget that Cain was already a figure of revulsion among Democrats for his pwnage of Clinton in that healthcare townhall.

Oh, knock that stupid shit off. You're going to tell me a low-level, nobody--a person who may be no more than someone inclined to vote Democrat--is going to make up sexual harassment charges against Cain back in 1997 in revenge for something that happened three years before? Jebus tap-dancing Christ that is stupid.

Do you even pause to think how stupid that is, that these people were still pissed at Cain over 1000 days later? Enough to falsify charges against him? Just lying in wait for 3 years to frame him? Or maybe, just maybe: Cain might have did or said something offensive? Which makes more sense?

In the Cult of St. Cain, it has to be these crazy Democrat bitches all lying in wait to catch the black man, even if they had to wait over 1000 days to do it.

Fine, then, vote for Obama.  Be an ass, officially.

Way to cherry pick from my response, selecting a person is not an action to a result. It is little different than making a statement. Tell me what has Romney actually DONE showing conservative principles. He has a huge record of governing, show me his conservative side.

I see Romney AS a vote for Obama so show me how Romney has actually performed something to indicate differently. Picking Bork is no different than a cereal company picking an athlete plugging the brand, it is a false appeal, in this case to a celebrity / authority.

Again what CONSERVATIVE actions has Romney actually demonstrated?

I cannot imagine Obama having anything to do with this at this point in time.

After Cain wrapped up the nomination, sure. But now, no.

Disagree. We perceive this as an attack on an individual, and find it  unreasonable to conclude that Obama benefits from attacking an individual now when it appears to be more potent against the individual at a later time.

Actually the attack and the war is against the GOP and conservaties and a successful attack on one of them is a successful attack against them all. The Donks need to suppress the GOP vote. And this is the first phase of a longer program to do so. They want you to ultimately throw up your hands and stay home. This time you can't. Whoever we get, we will have to drag the stinky bloody carcass across the finish line and celebrate our new majority in the Senate.

305 OK, I'm gonna say it.
I never saw the magic with Herman Cain.

1. That "dressing down" he supposedly gave Bill Clinton over HillaryCare that everybody swoons over? I watched the video of it. It was OK, but not that great.

2. The humongous gaps in his knowledge ("neocon," "right of return," etc.) -- which are especially glaring given that he's been a conservative talk-show host for however many years. WTF?

3. For a while his "directness"/"frankness"/"freshness" captivated even me. So I got the free sample of his latest book on my Kindle, with the intention of waiting to buy the whole book until I saw how much I liked the sample. Here's the deal: It was an entertaining enough read, but the self-absorbed preening and prancing and self-promotion had creeped me out by the time I got to the end of it. And that was just the sample. No, I didn't purchase the book.

The contrast with Rick Perry's book and Newt's books, which stay focused on principles and ideas, could not be greater.

Don't get me wrong. There's a place for personal stories. Many politicians and business execs write books that use their personal story -- which, after all, we do want to hear about -- to show us how the lessons they learned through their own experiences have formed their philosophy about how the world works and have thus become core convictions about how to govern (or run a business). This is why I thoroughly enjoyed Bobby Jindal's book (and recommend it highly) and to a lesser degree, Tim Pawlenty's book.

But Cain's (at least the little I read) was way too much bluster -- enough of it that I decided I couldn't make it through a whole book of it without getting seriously annoyed.

Knock off your own stupid shit.  Everybody who disagrees with you is a cult member who can't think for themselves.  Didn't want Cain anywhere near the race.  I think all the not-Romneys are fully unnominatable except Perry and Cain was doing a disservice by being the frontrunner because I knew he'd stumble.

But no, I'm a cultist.  That makes you feel better, doesn't it?  This way, you can just use Alinskyites as your own tool for advancing your cause.  Well, sorry if that makes me a little skeevish.

You're going to tell me a low-level, nobody--a person who may be no more than someone inclined to vote Democrat--is going to make up sexual harassment charges against Cain back in 1997 in revenge for something that happened three years before?

No.  I'm saying that they hated Cain anyway and were perfectly happy to ruin his reputation because he was an enemy.  Plus, since the charges were filed a month after he left the association, it was easy to ensure that he wouldn't defend himself.

A little unprovable charge here, an accusation there, convince a friend to go in on it and, all of a sudden, you get a healthy payoff to go work for Holder.

Of course, a lot of this depends on the specifics of the charges, which we still haven't seen yet. I mean, we know who one of the women is, can we at least know what she accused Cain of?

309 "So, judge Romney's bad points on what he's done and said, but when he does and says something good, it's just a ruse."

That is largely how I feel about it.  Romney had a chance to nominate folks to the bench.  He nominated a heavy majority of liberal democrats and Roe V Wade supporters (in my opinion, no matter your view on abortion, Row V Wade is a litmus test for bad jurisprudence).  Romney also said he thought Roe was "good law".

In many ways, his view of what is acceptable for the government to do is very, very liberal.  Ban guns.  Tax guns $100 a piece.  Force folks to buy health insurance even if they want you to mind your own business.  The list is actually pretty long, and Romney's poor choices in nominations are one of many examples.

So in 2007 and after, he has attempted to show this isn't an accurate reflection of Romney's views by things I do interpret as ruses and dishonesty.

Perry has also appointed folks.  Including judges upon occasion, though they are typically elected in Texas.  Great judges.  The first black Texas judge on our highest court, and the best thing is he wasn't selected because of his race, but because he really was the best man for the job.  Not a drop of racism or reverse racism in there.  TX is way ahead of the north east on culture in this way.  Perry doesn't need this slick crap.  He just needs to do the job properly.  He couldn't be reelected repeatedly unless he did the job right, no matter how slick he is.

I will vote Romney vs Obama in the general.  Folks have to understand just how bad Obama is.  A much more intelligent and centrist liberal, who has business experience (Romney) is superior to Obama, and worth a vote, though I honestly can't tell people I believe in Romney.  I can't campaign much for him as a matter of personal integrity, but I would just campaign for congressional candidates instead.

I'd much rather nominate someone with a record proving I can believe in them, and campaign for them.  I wish Perry was able to convince the GOP his record means something.  It sure does to me, but I'm not like most voters.  We want JFK and George Clooney and ubermench (as someone mentioned above) to lead us.  It's unfortunate.  When we value slick over performance, it's no surprise performance suffers and bullshit piles high.

But if we do get stuck with him, at least people like Bork and Phares will make it easier to pull the lever for him.

Posted by: Militant Moronette at November 08, 2011 09:57 AM (F0o5k)

315 "Re: Why would team Obama want to take out Herman Cain now....rather than in the general election?"

Why did Obama do that to Jack Ryan?  He ran against a weaker competitor in the general.

What if Obama thinks Romney is the perfect opponent, because he knows he can smear him, but he also knows Romney is vulnerable to a third party attack in a way Cain and Perry aren't, and he knows Romney has that flip flopper thing that proves very powerful in recent general elections?

Romney has all the problems John Kerry and Bob Dole have.  He has a lot of slick, but ... Obama may think he can compete on that level and win on all others.  He may think the best scenario is to fail to offer Americans a distinct choice between ideologies, since that typically favors the incumbent.

But ultimately, this scandal against Cain seems organic.  Too many accusers.  Too known by insiders.  It was going to come out.  There need be no conspiracy for that to happen, and many politicians would wisely just sit there and let it happen on its own, rather than actually be linked to it.

320 "But, oh, I gotta admit I was impressed with his picking the awesome Robert Bork."

And let's make no mistake.  Romney is an effective centrist and would probably pick other smart people.  Some lefties, some righties, often impressive people.

Even in MA, Romney picked some people who were very impressive, IMO.  But ultimately, it didn't matter.  Romney was trying too hard to do what worked in the polls, and failed to make MA better.  He should have gutted spending.  MA faced a crisis of ridiculously high spending.  Instead, he gave them an entitlement program that is now bankrupting the state.

Romney is not a dumbass.  He's also not a leader.  He is going to make impressive connections and show them to us, but if he's president and there's a hard path the nation needs to get on (indeed there is) he will not do it.  There's no chance.

A measurable improvement over Obama, who is an ineffective centrist.

331 To all the people who say "I'll vote for whomever our nominee in Nov. 2012."

Well, that's all very nicey-poo, but your one little vote ain't gonna cut it. The only way we can beat the criminal ObamaMachine -- which will stop at nothing, and whose 2012 antics will dwarf the fraudulent, violent and illegal activities of their 2008 campaign -- will be with absolutely unprecedented GOP get-out-the-vote efforts. We will have to win by a real margin of 20 percentage points in order to win by 5 "official" percentage points. We will have to beat their machine by a landslide on the ground in order to squeak by with a razor-thin win in the final results. Republicans will have to volunteer in numbers and with commitment that, frankly, we have never seen before.

I just cannot imagine that happening if Romney is our candidate. The base is simply not going to make that extraordinary effort for Romney. And without superhuman effort, we cannot beat the Obama Machine. They will manufacture millions of votes out of thin air. That's what they DO.

I spent thousands of dollars I shouldn't have and thousands of hours of my time volunteering in the campaigns and elections of 2008 and 2010. I consider myself part of "the base." I for one can say I will happily make that effort for Gingrich, Santorum or Perry. (Or Paul Ryan, if he were to change his mind!) I cannot say the same about Romney. And I'm guessing "the base" contains millions of people like me.

Alright, so you're not in the Cult of St. Cain. There are some it applies to but not you. But, it is still stupid as hell to cast about for a conspiracy on this. It's Kos-level kookiness.

There is no conspiracy. And this "well look who they work for" "follow the money" etc. is no better than foot-stomping temper-tantrum hoping it will all go away.
It's not our job to make it go away--it was Cain's. And he fucked it up and keeps fucking it up. Because he is an amateur who has no damned idea what he is doing. A "C" guy who hired "F's" so he could still be the smartest guy in the room. (Remember the "don't talk to Mr. Cain unless spoken to" memo?)

I get it. The same "politics of personal destruction" works with the left. They do it to our guys over and over. Joe the Plumber makes the JEF look bad and all of a sudden they're digging out his tax records and forcing us to talk about that instead. And so we're sorely tempted to adopt what works for them.
But, it doesn't and will never work for our side: 1) we're no good at it, come off all ham-handed and sloppy, 2) our hearts are not in it, we're better than that and we know it, 3) it is wrong.

338 Not as a slur to Flake and Bork, whom I respect, but Romney had most of the endorsements in 2008 as well (though not from his peer governors).

He also raised the most money, showing he has the support of many wealthy folks (I don't raise that as some kind of stupid class warfare point).

Romney is, was, will be the best connected candidate.  Perhaps even in the GOP's history.  His roots are deep.  Both his parents have run for high office.  He's got dozens of other politicians in his family tree.  At least one of his kids, and one sibling also have run for high office.  And I mean high office, not state legislator.

We should grant that Romney has the best endorsement package.  If that matters the most, I guess he's the best choice.  I'm not sure it matters.

His foreign policy adviser team is longer than the Pentagon's.  It's like a club.

I would rather look to the man's record and see what I can see about this man's decisions.  When in MA, did Romney go the path of Chris Christie, railing against a government that is far too bloated and intrusive and ineffective?  No.  That would have taken leadership.  Instead, Romney negotiated heavily to win the center.  Romneycare, for example.  Give the left what they want, but in a version that is supposedly less liberal.  Or "Strong gun control" but a version that somehow saves the right from what the left really wanted, but yeah, steadily marches state policy to the left.

It's not leadership.  and it never works out for the right.  The MSM is too powerful for a centrist slick politician to lead to the right.

Yet despite Romney being the exact opposite of Chris Christie, he's got Christie's support!

We need to realize this party is not just a club of pure principle.  Connections and foundations and deals matter in politics.  That's what makes it politics.  That's why Romney is not flipping burgers, but rather is running for President in the GOP despite a record that would be suitable for a center left democrat politician, and shares more aspects with Ted Kennedy than Ronald Reagan.

Posted by: Dustin at November 08, 2011 10:22 AM (rQ/Ue)

340 "Posted by: Militant Moronette  at November 08, 2011 02:14 PM (F0o5k)"

You are 100% right.  Romney has a serious problem with the 'base'.  He is tremendously vulnerable on both his left and right flanks if he's the general election nominee, and the democrats already started fake tea efforts in 2010.

What's to stop Obama's billion dollar campaign from funding some conservative third party candidate?  Principles?

I agree with you that Romney is a lot less electable than the polls indicate.

While I personally would support Romney in the general, I just don't think he will get that kind of support from all the conservatives out there.  We can't underestimate just how unsettling it is for many Tea Partiers to support Romneycare so soon after Obamacare.

So if Romney's #1 credential is electability, this is a reason to pause and reconsider.

341 If we go with the "it's his turn" candidate, we lose. Historical fact.

How dense must Republicans be to keep forgetting, over and over and over, who our candidates were in every presidential election we have lost in the last 40 years?

Posted by: Militant Moronette at November 08, 2011 10:31 AM (F0o5k)

342 "It's his turn" is an establishment value.  I don't have any love for the GOP establishment, but what are the outsiders (like Hoiman Gain) doing for us?  Nothing good right now, for sure...

Posted by: M. Murcek at November 08, 2011 10:33 AM (ToZXn)

343 Though I'm not sure why I even both criticizing Romney.  We all get it.  None of us are voting for him.  He's got a few token fans, but there is no real persuasive force coming from them.

It's fun to bash the guy, but the real issue here is who will we support?  Who will we unify around to beat Romney?

Cain?  There are so many reasons that is not the right choice.  For one, he actually likes Romney too much.  He's not qualified, either.

Newt?  Newt's heart is in the right place.  He's knowledgeable. He's got every ounce of Romney's political skill, and then some.  He's more conservative, though I have reservations about that too.  He's made some bad and some iffy calls.  But he's an acceptable compromise

Perry?  Perry has a great record. 90-95% conservative.  He's a lot smarter than he's being credited as, and than he looks to those who only saw him in the debates.  He's lacking in political skill, but I think in a general election he's got the clearest justification for saying "I can do this job" and "I can make your country a better place" and the simplest response the inevitable smear machine "but jobs".   Also, the general is light on debates and heavy on ads and interviews and appearances, favoring Perry's skill set a lot more than the primary seems to be.  Furthermore, all governors are ambitious to be President.  Tell them that if they balance budgets, they will earn something valuable politically.

344 Just to confuse the Cain issue a bit more, I read today (I think it was on INstapundit), that Ms. Broderick tried to get Gloria Aldred to take her case to get more publicity, and the honorable Ms. Alred refused. Since her schedule permitted her to represent the accuser of Meg Whitman and Cain, she just might have ulterior motives. BTW, I vote for no new changes to the Ace site. why fix what is not broken.

345 87 All hail that newest freshest Not-Romney. The idea of voting for Newt makes me want to projectile vomit. Almost all of the other Not-Romney's are better than this fucktard. Posted by: Bob Saget hates Mitt at November 08, 2011 12:40 PM Outstanding use of logical arguments there.

348 If Gain's 5 pm presser is not an announcement that he realizes he's too damaged to continue, then the rest of the primary season will be poisoned and wasted, and we WILL have to vote for whichever undesirable wins the nomination.

349 140 I don't care if ace goes on a posting binge as long as they don't involve Cain. Hell, I'll take a movie review (or two) at this point. Posted by: Dave at November 08, 2011 12:54 PM (Xm1aB)

350 I appreciate having the MSM and many commenters trying so hard to convince everybody that only Romney is electable, and to not worry about him being a Dem, and to not be afraid of him because "backbone Boehner" will keep him in line, but please GIVE IT UP, because I saw what happened with McCain, and do not want to relive it. Also, yesterday on the NRO blog, Fred Thompson wrote an article that said the nasty tricks played on him when he ran, were traced to an operation research team hired by Mitt Romney. So, I am firmly in the Perry for President club.

351 220 BTW, I assume most of you saying 'don't change the site' are joking. I love this blog, but come on. It needs some help. I am sure the reason it's not technologically cutting edge are 100% understandable, but it wouldn't be a bad thing to improve if possible. Not a chance.

357 By "persuasive force' do you mean that they/we don't festoon every single thread with childish nicknames for Perry, Cain, etc. until the whole place looks like it's run by a Kos Kid with Tourette's?
"Mittens", "Mutt", 'Oromney", now that's some persuasive shit right there.

I like the look of Ace of Spades. It's retro in the same way that my brother-in-law's 1997 Buick is retro. Good things don't need to change.

359 Thanks to Jammie Wearing Fool, which on Monday moved to a new location, and also adopted one of those professional looking magazine-style looks, which, geeze, I really need to do one of these days.

Fuck that shit! Don't get me wrong, I like him as a blogger. But, I hate that magazine style where you have to navigate away from the main page to read anything. It reminds me of one of the things I used to hate about newspapers (the printed ones). All the good stories would start on the front page, but then you would have to go inside to read the end. What a PITA. At least they had the excuse that they could only fit so much on the front page, so they had to break up the articles so the could let more of them get some of that front page real estate. But that makes no sense on the internet, or at least much less sense. You just make your front page scroll longer.

One of the things I like about this site is you do not have to navigate away to read the posts. Even if you decide to stick part a post under the fold, you set it up so that clicking the "Continue Reading" link just expands the page you're on instead of sending you off to another page.

You want to change something? How about a preview feature for the comments. Now there's some change I can believe in.
