Days after I got into the presidential race in 2007, I was greeted with a website, “PhoneyFred.org,” described in the media at the time as an “anti Fred Thompson smear site.” You couldn’t really tell who was behind it, but we learned of it from the DNC, which made ample use of it. We assumed that they had created it. However, a reporter at the Washington Post (of all people) decided to find out who was behind the site. After a lot of effort, she traced it to an executive of TTS Strategies, a South Carolina consulting firm run by J. Warren Tompkins, one of the most notorious hardball political operatives in the country.
....
In 2007, he was running Mitt Romney’s campaign in South Carolina, where Mitt was behind the rest of us in the polls. Of course, when confronted, both Tompkins and Mitt were “shocked” to learn that a rogue employee (who ran Tompkins’s office) was running such a website (out of the office), and the site was taken down immediately. One of the more benign and amusing things the site accused me of was being a “flip flopper.” I kid you not.

Before everyone goes on about how "unelectable" Newt is (a theme played on every conservitive candidate since Sarah was nominated as McCain's runningmate) lemme just point out that he's been one of THE most articulate and knowledgable candidates at the debates. He's been a longtime beltway insider with all the baggage that carries.
While nobody seems to think he could carry water in a Presidential bid, I still think Newt would make an excellent #2 on a lot of conservative tickets.
Having said that.....carry on.....bash at will.

I could do with either of them on the ticket, and I'd like Paul Ryan there as well (yeah, I know about comments Newt made about Ryan's plan).
Pretty clear most of us reject Romney and are just trying on the other candidates. We could do worse than Newt. Yeah, the left will be inspired by him, but that's possibly inevitable if we nominate any conservative, so is that argument just a surrender of our ideology?

Newt endorsed Scozzafava in the 2009 NY 23 special election. She was selected in a NY State GOP establishment back room, suspended her campaign on the eve of the election, and threw her support to the Democratic nominee. That was two years ago. Newt was a bit out of it then, and it is unlikely that his mental acuity has improved since; such things tend to change in one direction only.
Remeber that this kind of idiocy being perpetrated in GOP back rooms was one of the driving forces for the Tea Party movement - it wasn't just about the Democrat's mad programs.

Yeah, there's a lot of water under Newt's bridge and he is every bit as political as the rest of them (and politics makes strange bedfellows, after all), but I think the positives would outweigh the negatives.

I wonder how Neut would handle a Cain-sized scandal.
All this weakness in the GOP field has me a bit down. But I still think it would be interesting to see how he'd handle himself as the object of the MFM's body cavity search. I think he might do quite well, given his role as the Great Uniter of the GOP in the first couple of debates.
IMO, if he really wants the nomination, all he'd have to do is renounce his AGW sit-down with the Wicked Witch of the West, embrace the Tea Party, and walk back his "right-wing social engineering" line and then start laying out what he'd actually do as Prez, ignoring the rest of the candidates and their infantile backbiting as they try to claw their way to the top.
We're at that point now. There is no perfect GOP candidate from what I've seen. I've wanted to pull for Cain, then Perry, then Cain. Now I'm just exhausted and disillusioned.
I need a beer.

The Scuzzyfuzzy part (read the whole thing though):
I’m pretty sure Newt’s endorsement of Scozzafava was because of a phone call he received from Chairman Steele(the two are friends). Newt came out and endorsed Dede and said something along the lines of this as his reason why: “Since I believe in individual districts right to choose their own candidate I don’t support national organizations coming in trying to over power the will of the people within a district”(or something like that). Well if that argument was actually true I would agree with Newt, but it wasn’t.
I believe it was Dick Armey that tracked down Newt about 4 days later and showed him DedeÂ’s record and the method that was used to select her(not even remotely close to a primary, nor the will of the people). Newt came out and said oops, IÂ’m really sorry. I didnÂ’t realize that this liberal women was selected by a few GOP country chairs pretty much behind closed doors. I retract my endorsement. But people remember the mistake not the reason nor the apology.

That is the downside of Newt. He is definitely a "we gotta get Rs elected no matter what so we can control the process" type of guy. It's the same reason that he sat on the couch with Nancy. I think he entered the race to raise his profile and sell books, but when he gained traction he realized that he had a shot at the VP slot. The fact that he singled out Perry as the only candidate with whom he would not serve - and that was when Perry was in the lead iirc (and after Perry had said nice things about Cain) - sure lends credence to the idea that there is some sort of cooperation or understanding or something between Cain and Romney, because none of the other candidates have ever really been very viable.

That tenebrousness was indeed a positive quality; for it obscured such parts of the inner walls as ought to have been revealed, and actually burst forth like smoke from its aeon-long imprisonment, visibly darkening the sun as it slunk away into the shrunken and gibbous sky on flapping membraneous wings. The odour arising from the newly opened depths was intolerable, and at length the quick-eared Hawkins thought he heard a nasty, slopping sound down there. Everyone listened, and everyone was listening still when It lumbered slobberingly into sight and gropingly squeezed Its gelatinous green immensity through the black doorway into the tainted outside air of that poison city of madness.
Poor Johansen’s handwriting almost gave out when he wrote of this. Of the six men who never reached the ship, he thinks two perished of pure fright in that accursed instant. The Thing cannot be described—there is no language for such abysms of shrieking and immemorial lunacy, such eldritch contradictions of all matter, force, and cosmic order. A mountain walked or stumbled. God! What wonder that across the earth a great architect went mad, and poor Wilcox raved with fever in that telepathic instant? The Thing of the idols, the green, sticky spawn of the stars, had awaked to claim his own. The stars were right again, and what an age-old cult had failed to do by design, a band of innocent sailors had done by accident. After vigintillions of years great Gingrich was loose again, and ravening for delight.

Actually that isn't how it works. This is from the same Rassmussen Poll.
When asked to choose between only Romney and Cain, the two men are tied. Forty-three percent (43%) support Romney in a two-way matchup, while 42% pick Cain. Romney is also essentially even with Gingrich in a two-way race.

I trust Newt to be a patriot. He understands the problems we face. I think he has the strength to not back down to the left. I think he can debate Obama, and Romney can't debate Obama IMHO.

Not only that, but he would enjoy the debate smackdown in direct proportion to how much he's hated by the left.

Newt has the FYNQ base.
Romney has the T. Coddington Van Voorhees VII base.
The Tea Party conservatives are pragmatic enough to coalesce their support around any true conservative. They will never back Romney. He's forever stuck at 25%.
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

We are well and truly boned. And, even worse, we seem to be playing by the enemies' rules: arguing amongst ourselves in debates hosted primarily by the MFM, and responding weakly to their attempts at smears.

My principles are damn sure more important than any RINO politics and damn RINO politicians. Principles over politics, that’s my motto. That’s why I’m supporting a Cain-Gingrich-Palin ticket for ‘12.
The first two things we want to see in a presidential candidate are experience and electability. Cain is more qualified than anyone in my family to be president. HeÂ’s also the most electable. Just ask Governor Swann, Senator Steele and Senator Keyes. In a vice presidential candidate we want someone whoÂ’ll add something politically to the ticket. NewtÂ’s won so many major elections in Georgia that state would be a lock to vote for Dr. Cain. Palin is the female Reagan. Just like Reagan, Sarahcudah served eight productive years as governor of a populous state and sheÂ’s undefeated.
More importantly this election is about destroying once and for all the RINO GOP establishment. If the GOP nominates an establishment candidate IÂ’ll be voting for Obama.
General Cain is the anti-establishment candidate. Hell, punks, you canÂ’t even spell anti-establishment without Herman Cain. Newt also is an anti-establishment candidate. In his 20 years in Congress Newt fought tooth and nail against the establishment. Of course Sarahcudah is the ultimate anti-establishment candidate. Take away her stint as governor and her vice presidential candidacy and sheÂ’s never been part of the GOP establishment. Establishment = losing more slowly, and IÂ’m tired of losing more slowly. Hell, starving is better than 3/4 of a loaf of bread and IÂ’d rather die than compromise.
Cain-Gingrich-Palin, Â’12. Love it or leave it, punks.

I'm in the Romney camp now, but in all honesty if there is a reasonable amount of evidence to suggest that Newt is electable, then I think conservatives should go all-in and support his nomination. Why?
He's brilliant
He's a staunch conservative (Not a perfect or pure one. Point one of those out to me BTW)
He'll destroy Obama in a debate
He'll know enough about how the U.S. Congress works to advance as transformative a conservative agenda as can be advanced.
Unfortunately I haven't seen that evidence as far as electibility is concerned, and that is a deal-breaker as I consider the most important issue at hand to be removing the SCOAMF from the White House. I'll be on the look out for it though.

I missed that.
There is still the matter of DeDe and whacking Paul Ryan like a Pinata.
Newt is smart - he would DESTROY Obama in a debate, even if he were high on crystal meth.
But man, he does some questionable things. It's like he's detached from the pulse of Conservatism, even though he is usually Conservative himself.
However, he's kind of big-government-y; then again, they pretty much all are.
I'll happily vote for Newt over Romney or SCOAMF.

The worst smears against him are untrue, and the truth is he, like me, and like many of you, and if not, you, many you know, discovered lifelong monogamy and never wavering feelings is a lot harder than we were told as kids pre-puberty. I'm inclined to give him a pass on that.
He's right on most of the issues, he's tough, he's a fearsome debater, he's not a massively hypocritical squish like Romney, he's not dumb on foreign policy like Cain, and beggars can't be choosers.

If anyone could get the SCoaMF re-elected, it's the GOP. Damned if they're not gonna manage to do the impossible. What the hell is it with this die-hard support for Cain? Is it the Baptist preacher thing kicking in again like with Huckabee? At this point, I couldn't care less what he did or didn't do with some female subordinates 10 or 12 years ago. My problem is Cain has shown once again (and again and again and again) that he has no clue how to lead and govern and handle unpleasantness like this (much less something worse, something that he would not know was coming like he had to have known with this). He just doesn't have what it takes (or doesn't care). Not to mention the problem he seems to have with telling the truth...or even remembering from one day to the next what the "truth" supposedly is. Like him personally are you want, but he has no friggin' clue about handling a crisis - even something as minor as this - in the political arena.

David invirginia , I agree. I have been a legal assistant for well over a decade. Cain not recalling this incident for days and then saying that he wasn't privy to the complaints or the settlements because of contract law, is unbelievable. Think about it. If you had two women come forward and lodge a complaint about you, one got 35k , the other 45k, and both had to leave their jobs, you dang sure would want to see how that might have damaged your character, or so you could rebute it. This is America! This vague recall on something major like this, is a red flag. And then on Greta, he tried to laugh it off and said he liked to look at pretty flowers, that was a terrible answer to her question.
On Mark Levin show , a caller called these women "bimbos and huzzies". These women did not leak this. How dare we treat them this way until we know the facts. Are the ones that accuesed Cliinton the only believable ones ? We were quick to believe that he was a sleeze, because there were too many stories. Now with Cain we have at least 4 so far. We have to sit back and watch this unfold. But it is too late for me to believe Cain anymore. I don't believe that he didn't know every detail to this sealed agreeement. I am sick about it , because I thought he would have made a great VP. I know that others love his rhetoric, but I look at actions (like Perry). I am sick and tired of teleprompter West Wing, Roman columns speeches, while our country is burning to the ground. We need a seasoned professional to come into the White House and start to work to turn us around. With Forbes and Bolton, Perry can't miss. And we need Rudy in the Attorney General position too!

First, my # 1 pet peeve is the spammers. I will never look at your product when you come on these sites and say "thanks for the helpful information", never! Quit being lazy and learn real marketing. You will not get anywhere this way.
# 242-Perry is not an open borders governor. He has asked all presidents since he has been governor for 11 years , for drones, more border guards. Obama has been the most uncooperative. Even Thornberry hasn't helped ,he wrote the dang patriot act even before 911 talking about our "porous borders".
The only thing that Perry has done is allow young people whose parents dragged them across the border when they were toddlers, to have in state tuition (with conditions) because Texas is the only home they have known. The stipulation is that they have to go through the citizen process at the same time. Out of state citizens have convinced people that he is pro "open borders" because they cannot get the in state tuition break. What about the Mexican illegals that waddle across the border and give birth to an automatic citizen? That is the law that needs to be changed. I have met many of these studnests. Texas is their home. They want to give back and be productive. Perry is right about this. The alternative will be "Fast and Furious" That is the most assinine thing that Obama has done , along with Eric Holder, selling guns to drug lords to kill our own people. Perry would never allow that on his watch. It has put we Texans, in danger. Perrry is protecting us as much as he can.
Newt is another McCain. He has said great things about Hillary and San Fran Nancy, wazzup with that?
