RedEye, Gateway Drug
— rdbrewer

A former progressive explains in an open letter how RedEye turned him on to conservatism. And then on to the harder stuff, like Fox News. Now he's into Andrew Breitbart and Ann Coulter on a regular basis.

My conversion from raging liberal to conservative didn’t happen overnight, though it may appear to some as if it had. I also realize no one at Fox News cares one whit what my political affiliations are, as long as I watch. But that’s the point. After my first “Red Eye” episode, I became a Fox News junkie.

It was while visiting friends who were “Red Eye” watchers that I saw my first show. The day I returned home, the very first thing I did when I’d finished unpacking was to turn on Fox News. I started paying attention.

At first, this was solely because I wanted more information on the stories they might cover on that night’s “Red Eye.” Then, it was because I found the opinions and stories covered on FNC refreshing and, ultimately, eye-opening.

I reached out to people like Andrew Breitbart. I discovered a warm, genuine human being who was working hard to push values in which he truly believed, and to open the eyes of everyday Americans as to how they were being duped by the mainstream media. I saw Ann Coulter unedited by leftists who hated her for the first time, and discovered she was warm, witty and highly sarcastic; all traits I highly admire.

Now, Breitbart and Coulter are two of my very favorite conservative personalities.

Read the rest. He goes on to explain his RedEye withdrawal when the show is preempted by so-called "updates" and "breaking news." That is somethig I can identify with. I get irritable when RedEye isn't on. I send snarky tweets. Newsflash: It ain't an update if it goes on for an hour. Updates last, like, 30 seconds, maybe a minute at the outside. And breaking news is about new news. Not news that has been on all day. And I always find myself asking the same kinds of questions he does, "Why didn't they interrupt the O'Reilly repeat or one of the other shows?" (Not Special Report, though.)

I think this might be a good key difference for liberals and conservatives.  We actually believe the things we are trying to push.  Liberals are pushing things because they think they are supposed to believe them, because its "correct"

78 RedEye is the perfect counter balance to Beck.  I've been watching Beck steadily for a couple of years but a recent rant about how we (apparently all of us) are slaves to "stuff" and how it would destroy America made me think I'd tuned into a church revival.  Usually he has a salient point at the root of his monologues but I found myself wondering if I was watching a therapy session.  Meanwhile, Gutfeld can make hard political points while making me laugh my ass off.  For that reason, though, I see why it's not on earlier.  If they were to move RedEye closer to primetime it might give Beck, O'Reilly, and Fox something they never bargained for.

88 Beck's ratings are down cause he blathered on about "deciding what you don't need to live and getting rid of things" and then people actually saw his "kitchen table" ( an artisan work of art worth thousands) and then he blabbed about moving to his new high tech house and little by little as people realize that he didn't need his old stuff cause he was getting new and better stuff for his new and better house they began to think maybe he is a hypocrite, not unlike the people on the left that he loves to criticize.

redeye has to stay in that time slot as that is where its audience is and also, if it was on earlier, it wouldn't be called redeye sillies...

Beck is much better at the run-and-gun, fact-driven takedown stuff.

He has three basic shows, IMO: Run-and-gun (like the Soros shows), preachy, and interview type stuff.  He really shows his brilliance when he's putting the puzzle pieces together at a lightning clip.  I wish he'd stick to that.

95 81 I do Golden Corral every other day, and on the middle days have 2 cans of tuna. I dropped 15 pounds.

Beck's ratings are not down. Check the cable shares. That crap was put out by media matters and picked up by everyone in the world. We went through this on some other thread. They have to make their people think their "boycott" is working. BTW, the day after the SOTU Beck's share was 1,990 the next closest was Matthews at 810.

97 I think I can guess some of the surnames that are in my area.  A high number of Germans I expect, but likely not mine.  I'll check the profiler too but I remember doing something similar and there were a total of like 7 people in Germany listed with it.  Which would be about the half the number of men/boys in my family from uncles and cousins.  And there are definitely others around I'm related to as well.

98 oops wrong thread.

99 Australia, the US, the English-Scottish border counties, County Monaghan in Ireland for me daddie's side, Cantabria and the Basque country for me mum. So I should be in a perpetual stew. Or stereotypically always drunk and fighting mad.

100 I realize from many comments here that Fox has been going soft for quite some time and, of course, was never as baby-killing right-wing conservative as the MFM hysterics complain but I am looking forward to watching Fox from February 14 when we get a new TV provider. (It's not an option on our standard cable.) I look forward to PVR recording the Red Eye.

Well, punch me in the face and call me Anderson Cooper; I believed that when I heard it.  Can't remember where it was.  Wasn't Fox.

That'll larn me.

102 Oops, wrong thread for me too. That's where the bourbon has got me.

103 I watch Red Eye whenever a new show is on. Have other Red Eye watchers noticed that RE is basically a video version of AceofSpades? They even play the same videos! (AoS usually has 'em up a day or two sooner)

104 > 21 I wish Fox put entire episodes of Red Eye up on their site - I'm not in the US so I can't get repeats on Hulu, Posted by: Waterhouse Most recent episodes can be torrented.

105 Red Eye should be on at 10pm cst then start the reruns.

106 Red Eye is a prime example of why Western Civilization is doomed. Every night has a least one hottie who is not making babies and seems to have no interest or prospects in doing so (except for PAB - and, Waterhouse, there is a place in heaven for you for sharing that clip with us). Makes me think that Schultz isn't the only guy on that set playing for the other team.

Posted by: somebody else, not me at February 03, 2011 08:03 PM (7EV/g)

107 I like Bill Schulz...he's funny, and he's supposed to be the MFM opinion - its his job.

108 Imogen is the hottest but her politics are the worst. Normally, I'd just imagine the mouth filled up so she couldn't talk, but the brit accent is sexy, so I am not sure what to do about her in my fantasies.

109 Can't do it in the O'Reilly hour. I need that time to remember to get me more factor gear

112 Isn't the first run of nightly Fox News shows for the East Coast, and the re-runs are for California? I don't think they could slot Red Eye in for that reason.

Red Eye rocks.  I don't get Fox News anymore.  In our Pelosi/Obama economy - I had to chop my personal budget, so that I can continue to pay my high taxes that go toawards everything a democrat can waste.

I miss Red Eye thee most.

114 I really wish they'd switch Red Eye with Beck. Beck doesn't win converts, he preaches to his choir. Beck these days is a crazy meld of equal parts John Birch Society, a religious cult, and Oprah (complete with crying and self-help stories). I hate Beck's show now.

115 RedEye, Gateway Drug

Interesting.

And here I thought Red Eye was something cooked up on an anime show.

116 I'll have to DVR it, been watching Beck's DVR during my morning work-out of 200 push-up's, sit-up's & 30 minutes on the elliptical.

Anybody buy that?  yea, didn't think so...sitting on the Lazy-Boy nursing my 1st cup of coffee while looking at the elliptical thinking why did I buy that crap.

117 Rdbrewer, it might be that Conan's attempting to compete with Stewart & Colbert. If that is indeed the case, someone needs to remind him that the only people who watch them are aging hipsters desperate to convince themselves they haven't yet reached the dreaded 4-0, and little kids not-so cleverly disguised as high school students.
