— DrewM Patty Murray, head of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee? The woman charged with Mediscaring every GOP Senate candidate next year? Alrighty then.
Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) has selected Sen. Patty Murray of Washington to serve as co-chair of a new congressional committee charged with reducing the debt, ReidÂ’s office announced Tuesday.Reid has also chosen Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve on the panel, which was created under the terms of the recent deal to raise the nationÂ’s debt ceiling, the statement said.
...
ReidÂ’s selections include none of the senators who served on the so-called Gang of Six, a bipartisan group that met for months to devise a plan to dramatically reduce the debt through spending cuts and entitlement and tax reforms.
Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell talks about his appointees to the committee but doesn't say very much.
"I asked our colleagues, our Republican colleagues, who would like to be on it," McConnell said. "And I basically sat down in person with the people who wanted to be on it, talked to them about it, and have done follow-up calls to several of them that IÂ’m leaning toward appointing."McConnell also said that he was looking for legislators who were ready to receive a great deal of pressure about the committee.
"IÂ’m putting people on there that I think have high character, great integrity, and can deal with the fact that they are going to be pushed and pulled and lobbied by everyone in this town, including our own colleagues in the Senate," McConnell said.
Remember, it only takes one of the six to side with the 6 members from the other party to get a plan to the floor of both houses. I think McConnell should appoint two hardcore members like Toomey and Rubio and then for the "RINO" member....Orrin Hatch. He has a reputation as a deal maker but he is in full on "Please don't dump me like you did Bob Bennett last year" mode. He'll look moderate but he's scared...in a good way.
I'm not too worried about the House. There are plenty of solid conservatives and Boehner isn't about to come this far only to blow it up by appointing the one vote that screws over the GOP.
I'm guessing nothing comes of this "super committee" and they simply find a way to waive the second half of cuts while releasing the rest of the debt ceiling increase.

The Democrats will propose: the balance of Obama's debt limit increase and tax increases.
The Republicans will propose: the balance of Obama's debt limit increase and spending cuts.
Then they'll meet in the middle a debt limit increase, tax increases, and puny spending cuts. In other words another shitty deal.
The Republicans need to BEGIN with proposing: tax cuts, huge spending cuts, and a moderate increase in the debt limit. And then let the Democrats meet them half way.

Clearly Patty Murray has sway and power that I don't understand.
And Kerry? On the other thread, people joked about why not Schumer? Why not Schumer? He's just as much of a preening ass as Kerry but far more intelligent and shrewd. Baucus is their budget guy, so that at least makes sense. He might try to hammer out an actual deal. It's quite clear that the R members of the committee are to ignore Murray and Kerry and deal directly with Baucus.
As for the Senate Rs, I'm fine with Hatch for now for the reasons you point out, DrewM. I'd love to have DeMint there, but he's made it clear that he and McConnell don't play well together and the same with Rand Paul. (Although I loathe his father, I think Rand actually wants to do responsible things.)
Toomey's an excellent choice. He's low-key but smart and wears the green eyeshade. Rubio'd be good, but again I'd rather have DeMint or Paul. Rubio shouldn't have this boondoggle on his resume. He's destined for better things.

Political activists and lobbyists said other likely picks include Reps. James E. Clyburn, D-S.C., a member of the House Democratic leadership, and Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., top Democrat on the House Budget Committee.
Sens. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., the No. 2 Senate Republican; Rob Portman, R-Ohio, a Bush administration budget director; and Mike Johanns, R-Neb., his state's former governor, also are possibilities.
Wapo

"Making these reforms doesnÂ’t require any radical steps. What it does require is common sense and compromise. There are plenty of good ideas about how to achieve long-term deficit reduction that doesnÂ’t hamper economic growth right now."
In other words: no spending cuts.
"Republicans and Democrats on the bipartisan fiscal commission that I set up put forth good proposals."
Which Obama ignored! Obama ignored his own silly commission's proposal.
"Republicans and Democrats in the SenateÂ’s Gang of Six came up with some good proposals."
Which never materialized. Only chatter from a bunch of harumphing senators.
"John Boehner and I came up with some good proposals when we came close to agreeing on a grand bargain."
Which Obama reneged on and then walked away.

This is how you talk about the men and women who have been elected to lead this country? I knew Republicans were selfish, but more and more I am learning that they are nasty and mean too. That explains why they would rather keep their money than help the poor and the sick and the undocumented among us -- people whose only "crime" is not being a fat-cat who clips coupons and plays golf and was born white. But Obama has played this well. The debt committee will see to it that you will begin to pay more of your fair share. You can't keep what you have made on the backs of the people who built this country -- the working men and women!

Heh. I'm sure some BATF guy would love to have that laying on a table at his press conference.

...and then he'd take it to use hisself for his next kitten stomping, Mexican arms-smuggling mission. Better that the issue gear, uh ...so I've heard.

If you look at the comments to the Daily Mail or Telegraph articles on the riots, the Brits are defending their gun bans. One guy even said, "You have to remember that if the good guys have guns, so do the bad guys!" I guess he doesn't thin bad guys have guns even when the bad guys don't.
Someone cited gun death stats for the US vs the UK (with the hysterical "look how many Americans die by guns!") and somehow left out statistics for other types of violent deaths that skyrocketed in the UK after the ban: stabbings, beatings, etc.
England has died and the Left has one. They are a nation of sheep.

You said it, brother, although the proper reference is Dugout Doug, followed by a string of expletives.

Commisions, committees, what difference does it make? If the committtee makes a recommendation that is perceived to be contrary to the interests of the political class, it will be ignored.
Remember the Deficit Commission? Brushed off just like you knew it would be. Nothing but a delaying and obfuscation tactic. A really obvious one, an insult.

What y'all overlook--because it seems so outrageous, so illegal as to be almost unbelievable--is the likelihood of an outright bribe by the Dems.
See, this is too outrageous to even occur to the Republicans. Plus they know they'd probably get caught, and that would be the end of the GOP for another decade, as the Lying Media would be beating that horse forever.
But the Dems have no such qualms. They already used special, unconstitutional incentives to win the needed votes to pass Obamacare (the Nebraska deal?), so the precedent's been set for open "rewards" to a cooperative Republican.
If an open reward isn't attractive enough, there's always $20 million from Soros, funneled thru several cutouts so as to be all but untraceable. And of course even if provable, if the MFM ignores it, most Americans will believe it didn't happen.
Hey, I'd love to be wrong but I've seen this play too damn many times before.
