But one dead Bin Laden later and *hey presto*, Syria is off the nightly news and Obama doesn't have to do anything about it right away -- and he has to be hoping that it stays off the nightly news until Assad has well and truly stomped out the rebellion.

So no, not for political advantage against the Republicans, but rather to sweep a messy situation out of sight and mind for a few weeks.

By the way, the Libyan rebels are already wondering why the fvck Obama hasn't done to Qaddafi what he did to Osama.  That's yet another spot of unintended blowback to Obama.

The Taliban government, running Afghanistan with OBL there was a threat to the Pakis. That's why they let us and the Northern Alliance bounce them out of Afganistan into the border mountains. That political entity, such as it was, was more or less wiped out. Since then, its been OBL and AQ fighting along the borders, under tacit Pakistani support (from factions at least), and as long as the guns were pointed out at us rather than in toward unseating the Pakistan government, they were content with the situation.

Whatever the name, once the terrorists didn't have the resources of a nation to play with Pakistan became a lot less scared of them.

I'm with you there.   When I was about 6 years old, my uncle and aunt took me to the beach.   I was standing in water just up to my knees when something grabbed my little toe and bit the shit out of it.   I started screaming and ran out of the water only to see a damn crab latched onto it.   I was jumping around trying to sling that damn thing off, and it wouldn't let go.   My uncel had to literally beat the dam theing to death and pry it's claw from my toe.   I still have a tiny scar to prove it.

There's a huge disconnect between the picture and the WH post-OBL kill vs. the Captain I Am Badass speech.  In the speech he's all I commanded, I decided, I am in charge.  But in the photo he's just come off the golf course and is shrinking in the corner of the room.  Everyone else is dressed for the mission and appear on top of things.  He looks out of place, golf shirt still on.  The idiot should never appear next to a general or any military officer in uniform without a suit and a tie.  He looks woefully outranked and outclassed.

Then, in the last couple of days the WH has been in angst over what pictures or videos to release.  First, wouldn't they have planned these details out in advance?  And a guy that was supposedly so decisive about calling the mission can't make a decision about a picture? All the dithering flies in the face of the Commander Competent he plays on TV.

Lastly, why the rush to slide OBL into the sea so fast?  Should've invited representatives from various countries to come see the body for themselves before dumping it.  Could've been done within 24 hours easily, and it would stop conspiracies before they could start.  Let the Muslim world see for themselves, and offer incontrovertible proof of death.  Really stupid move.  And again, O has had over 2 years to plan out in detail what to do with OBL body, given it was one of his many #1 priorities since Day 1.
