Remembering 9/11 in Pictures
— Maetenloch

Rather than putting up a long, maudlin post on 9/11 I thought I'd let these collections of photos do the talking for me.

Iconic 9/11 Pictures from Life Magazine

How the media has tried to sanitize 9/11 in the years since

Within a few weeks after 9/11 the media stopped showing any video or images deemed 'too raw'. Some of this was well-meaning but I think much of it came from a condescending view that this kind of imagery would only inflame the innate troglodyte nature of the American people and make us run out and attack the nearest random Muslim.

The 9/11 victims America wants to forget: The jumpers
Okay I have to quibble with the title - it's the American media that would prefer we forget about the people who jumped from the burning towers on 9/11. That's why you'll pretty much only see photos of the jumpers on blogs and non-MSM outlets. But otherwise this Daily Mail article is a very good one on who the jumpers were, why they jumped (many may have been unintentional), and what it was like for them on that day.

article-2035720-0043F39C00000258-873_468x490.jpg

And never let us forget that nearly 3,000 innocent people were brutally and horrifically murdered. The media agreed among themselves to not show any corpses or body parts but here is a bit of the gruesome reality of what happened on 9/11/2001 [warning: disturbing photo]:

The Human Cost [graphic]

Now multiply this by 2,997 to get an idea of the horror.

Update: One of the best personal accounts of 9/11 I've ever read was Allahpundit's free-form rememberings on Twitter two years ago. Luckily Andy Levy captured it here: Remembering 9/11

I composed this on the first anniversary of 9-11, with the intention of creating a video to accompany it. I have never really gone past the initial stages for the video, as I still react so viscerally to the images — my somber mood returns to white-hot rage at what this 7th century cult of death wrought that day. So this song remains as tribute to all who lost their lives on that horrific day, and especially for those who ran towards the catastrophe and showed how selfless sacrifice will always ring eternally over death’s empty sting.

9 May every filthy bastard that committed these atrocities, supported them financially or otherwise, or cheered when they occurred, rot in hell for all eternity.

And may the innocent victims, both alive and dead, find peace.

That is all.

(Or maybe not--there's no cure for stupid.) The press and survivors described seeing bodies strapped into airplane seats on the streets of Manhattan, but no pictures allowed.

17 I've heard analysis that very few of the jumpers did so intentionally.  In the blinding smoke, confusion, and panic, they may not have even known where the windows were. Others may have been chased there by the extreme heat and flames.

It's too unimaginably horrible to question their actions

The man from the NTSB who recovered the flight recorder from the plane that struck the Pentagon vividly describes walking over the carnage and bodyparts from the people on that plane.  The "missile strike" story fabricated by that French guy is just more nonsense created to obscure the truth.

Popular Science, of all places, ran an extensive story debunking a lot of the Truther myths perpetrated to confuse the simple minded.

That's understandable.  I don't think they should be called "jumpers" (as they are in that article), because we really don't know if they jumped.  We only know that they fell.  God bless those poor people and all of the victims and their families.

We have overwhelming evidence-- including the newly-released tapes from the F.A.A. and A.A. and museum displays which feature parts of the planes. A few of the survivors from in and around the impact zone in the South Tower had pieces of the plane in their offices and there are scores of people who saw and/or felt the planes hit. If they don't believe in spite of all that, that's on them.

69 No, they are not "jumpers." They are not "suicides." They were murdered, plain and simple. I want to believe that not all Muslims are of this vile ideology , but so few "moderate" Muslims have come forth to decry what happened that day that I fear they DO agree with it. Our soldiers have done amazing things winning hearts and minds, on their own, without being told to. They comfort frightened children, and bring the injured and sick to sick bays for treatment. They take care of stray dogs that the locals beat for fun, and find ways to bring them back as beloved pets in the US. They carry candy and small toys over and above their 70 pounds of required gear, so that they have something to give the kids they meet. And those kids run to them, knowing that those dusty, dirty, camo-wearing warriors mean safety. Sorry for the diatribe, but damn, I get so angry when our men and women doing good things get sold down the river by screw worms like Krugman and Kathleen Parker. Those two aren't worthy to wash their (the soldiers) three week old dirty underwear.

Yeah, I'd say if that's their intent, they're doing it wrong.  Islam seems to be first and foremost about oppression.

He said: 'I'm a Muslim. What they're doing is bringing shame on all Muslims. This is not part of the teachings of Islam.

'Islam is all about peace, but what they want to do is hate other people

Well, yeah, willow, and I do understand what you are saying.  Living in LA, I know Muslims who are decent people raising decent families.  But that canard "Islam is all about peace" can only be spoken either as an outright lie or by someone who has never read the Quran and the teachings of Muhammed.  It is simply NOT true.

90 91 Just out of curiosity, but how is ol' LGF looking today?  Is 9/11 as serious over there as it used to be, or a fuzzy memory?

Charles Spirochete JohnNoStones has the little green footballs (a scatological reference that he won't admit to)  bouncing between the twin towers. What could be more solemn then that?

I've pretty much been avoiding the 9/11 threads because I don't trust myself to keep an even keel. It still generates an unholy fury in me all these years later, so I'll just stick with my standard 9/11 prayer.

Prayers for the fallen
Ammo for the warriors
Never forget
Never forgive

99 The answer to that, willow, is quite simple.  Every last "moderate, peaceful" Muslim has to find the backbone to stand up and denounce Islam and the Islamo-terrorists who are destroying this world we live in.  Which will never happen.  God only knows why, it seems pretty damn simple to me.

Posted by: Peaches at September 11, 2011 02:26 PM (/ybwc)

100 The incarnation of Islam that a lot of these folks follow results in the same sort of "peace" that one found at Auschwitz.

However, I do not see how we can eliminate Islam.  I think the best we can do is counter it and contain it.

102 Just a thing about the pictures. We get angry with the MSM publishing photos/images of death and destruction in combat zones, but the author is upset that they won't show it when it comes to death and destruction in the US proper. Got to have some consistency here. But I remember that picture. I remember watching as we realized that some of what was falling were people. I just wish we were doing something more with what happened. Its like we've lost direction about what this means (e.g. Krugman's piece today).

104 peaches their mindset is really inexplicable to me, with the renewed hate shown at this time.

I mean what hate at whom? those that died>?
their constant excuse of our support of Israel.
what's their excuse then for africa? Indonesia, Beslan?

I think most of the objections are to invading the privacy of fallen soldiers' families while they are grieving.  I haven't heard many complaints about photos of combat casualties, although of course one could easily make the case that focusing on those could demoralize our troops and make them ineffective, risking lives.

As for the 9/11 imagery, the images of people falling are not gruesome, nor would be images of the airplane seats and wreckage, properly framed.  Listening to the 9/11 re-broadcast on MSNBC (of Couric et al), I was amazed by how detached they were, especially at first, as if it never occurred to them that there were people in those planes.

It is the peace of the slave. It is the peace of submission.

In Christianity, submission to Christ is not the submission to slavery, but the recognition that the pride of worldliness is a false shadow of the true Glory of  God. A perfect example of this "pride" today is the haughty vulgarity of the columns written by Pauly Krugnuts and Kathleen Park-whore. There is no humility or seeking of reconciliation among their fellow citizens, but only hateful disdain.

Submission or acceptance is the effort to live a Life in Christ, and to witness for Him in this world, to be charitable and kind, to friends and strangers both. For a Christian, to wear the crown of peace can also mean to wear the the crown of thorns. It can be a very rough personal road.

For a Muslim, submission means to become an obedient servant to a religion and worldly leaders that demands total adherence to its beliefs. In the strictest Islamic countries (such as Saudi Arabia), there are religious police dedicated to policing Muslim virtue, mainly by bullying women. This is not freedom or charity or an expression of conscious virtue, but a religion controlled by fear. It is the religion of the angry mob, or as our betters have described it recently, the "Arab Spring". Islam at its most naked - an angry surly mob looking for a fight.

In the times of Saladin, he was for a time a held as a hostage in the Christian Crusader held parts of present day Israel. He was astounded that Christian women would speak on their own and sometimes linger and talk after their husbands went elsewhere.

It is always comically appalling to me that modern Western women, of all people, would  knowingly give any aknowledgement or comfort to Islam, because it is and always has been slavery for women. It speaks broadly of their ignorance of culture and history.  There is a significant Muslim community in my town (Columbus), mainly Somalis, and it appalls me when I see their women in public in the full burkha, covered from head to foot.  It is repellant and frankly un-American to treat anyone this badly in public - and it is certainly NOT freedom.

I was a teenager during the Viet Nam War.  Every night, America ate its dinner while watching b&w footage of the unbelievable carnage over there.  I truly believe that had a lot to do with all the anti-war protests and activity that went on.  And I think it was "lesson learned" for politicians of every stripe.  If they don't show it, most Americans will not seek it out and continue to stoke their outrage.

Speaking of which, did anyone notice that his wife was wearing a crescent shaped brooch of stars on her cocktail dress at the ceremonies this morning? This crew is all about symbolism, so this was no "I wasn't thinking about any such thing". Who wears a gaudy piece of jewelry to a memorial service anyway?

117 I think AP's account is very moving, very accurate.   I would add that I remember how quiet it got with no planes in the sky.  I remember so so so many cars in the parking lot of the train.   Not moving for days until it hit you, they weren't coming back.  People's moms and dads weren't coming back.  People's friends weren't coming back.   I remember the candlelight vigil, seriously the entire town turned out praying so hard that our losses weren't as huge as we thought, hoping beyond hope that they would be miraculously found.  I remember my friend's mom, the history professor and devout roman catholic saying to my mom, "immediately I thought this was a religious war" and wondering what the heck she was talking about.   I have cried all day, the wound feels as real today as it did back then and I'm wondering why since don't they say it's supposed to get easier to deal with?

#31 "The New York City Coroner's Office has classified all killed at the World Trade Center as murder. "

And rightly too.  Which is why I wish the media would stop referring to those 3,000 people who "lost their lives" on 9/11.  We don't use that pansy formulation for any other murder victims, no matter how many.  Matthew Shephard didn't "lose his life" on that barbed-wire fence; Ted Bundy's victims didn't "lose their lives" when he turned his attention to them; they were all MURDERED, and we say it with confidence.  With 9/11, though, it's all soft-focussed, as if these people were just in the way when a tornado blew through town.  Nobody's fault, just as you can't blame a storm or a tidal wave - they were just "lost" somehow, nobody can quite say how.  Makes me mad as hell.
