Rep. Issa's To-Do List
— Gabriel Malor

A bit of follow-up to yesterday's post. Several commenters suggested that Congressman Issa should get a pass on his retreat from the Sestak issue because he has bigger fish to fry.

Is this what you had in mind?

Rep. Darrell Issa is aiming to launch investigations on everything from WikiLeaks to Fannie Mae to corruption in Afghanistan in the first few months of what promises to be a high profile chairmanship of the top oversight committee in Congress.

According to an outline of the committeeÂ’s hearing topics obtained by POLITICO, the House Oversight and Government Reform is also planning to investigate how regulation impacts job creation, the role of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the foreclosure crisis; recalls at the Food and Drug Administration and the failure of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission to agree on the causes of the market meltdown.

The to-do list is: "1. Impact of regulation on job creation ... 2. Fannie/Freddie & the Foreclosure Crisis ... 3. Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and the failure to identify origins of the financial crisis ... 4. Combating corruption in Afghanistan ... 5. WikiLeaks ... 6. FDA/Food & Drug Safety."

Notable omissions: Sestak bribery probe. AG Holder and the voter intimidation case. The stimulus spending and mismanagement. Pigford II. The GM dealerships kerfuffle.

10 4. Combating corruption in Afghanistan

Exactly how does Issa expect to purge corruption in Afghanistan?

Does this translate into pulling out of Afghanistan given that government's complete permeation of corruption, including US tax funds redirected via Afghanistan to the Taliban allied with Iranian theocratic global aspirations?

Or does Issa plan to combat Afghan corruption by switching players and installing a new puppet?

Too bad Holder doesn't appear on the committee schedule. I can't believe you're gullible enough to believe what politicians are saying even in the face of evidence of what they're doing. Frankly, I'm shocked at that kind of naivete from someone your age, Vic.

13 Frankly, I'm shocked at that kind of naivete from someone your age, Vic.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, for now, since he said it on national TV and the only thing we have saying he will not is absence of an agenda item in a report by Politico.

I'm shocked that you believe anything Politico says.  They are known liars.

Lets wait and see what he actually does then we can hold his feet to the fire.

14 It looks like the omissions are primarily things that would be painted as "partisan" or "anti-Obama attacks."  Since the other things are important, especially stuff like the Fannie-Freddie debaucle, probably this is a good strategy.  I'm not keen on him announcing that the other things are definitely off the table (did he?), but prioritizing in this way is probably smart.  They may get more traction on the things that are less targeted at Obama.

If Issa goes after Holder or investigates Pigford, he'll be called a racist.  Nothing more to it than that.  The fact that we're seeing profiles of Issa instead of Boehner today means that he's number one on the leftwing media's shit-list.

GM dealerships issue has no smoking gun, and none likely to arise.  As for stimulus spending, there are enough people covering it to make official investigation meaningless.

The schedule makes sense.  Patience is called for, here.

21 Perhaps the Sestak investigation is being delayed until the 2012 political season. Makes it fresher in the minds of voters. Let's face it, Obama will not be impeached, but maybe an investigation can influence the electorate, but it needs to be done at the appropriate time. I seem to recall a question of "party loyalty" and donations being called into questions when the dealerships were being selected to close.

There's also another questions concerning how the stockholders were treated in contrast to the unions. Violation of stock laws, there.

Issa has a full plate. It's time to expose this corrupt administration as the Chicago thugs that they are. Hopefully, a few of the MFM outlets will report his committee's findings in a responsible way, but I won't hold my breath. The Tea Party can pick up the slack.

Dead fish cover 20-miles of Arkansas River

Arkansas Game & Fish is trying to figure out why 100,000 fish in Northwest Arkansas turned up dead. They were found along a 20-mile stretch between the Ozark Dam and Highway 109 Bridge in Franklin County.

The 20-mile stretch along the Arkansas River where an estimated 100,000 drum fish were found washed ashore and floating looks much different now.

It's a third world kleptocracy- surprise, surprise, surprise. 5) Who caused/initiated the pre-2008 economic crisis that put BO over the top? Early reports said the initial trades all came from one source....true or not? If true, then who? 6) Holder Basically, find the corruption of this administration in all it's many faceted glory and slowly tie it all to BO. By 2012 everyone should realize he's nothing more than a two-bit Chicago thug.

48 Hmmm...

The fish kill is about 133 miles from Franklin County, where the birds died.  They seem to be connected by the same waterway (the fish kills seems to be downstream of the bird deaths).  There's a cluster of industrial stuff about midway in Russellville, next to the river.

I was kind of buying the lightning and/or fireworks theory for the birds, but I don't see how that would explain the fish.

Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- As Barack Obama prepares to confront a strengthened Republican opposition to his tax, spending and immigration priorities when Congress convenes this week, his advisers are comparing him to another president who faced similar circumstances: Ronald Reagan.

Like Reagan and Bill Clinton, Obama must spend the next two years of his presidency navigating a new balance of power after midterm election losses. Before leaving for a year-end vacation, Obama sought advice from Reagan chief of staff Ken Duberstein and David Gergen, an image adviser to both Reagan and Clinton, said an Obama aide. On his Hawaii trip, Obama brought along journalist Lou CannonÂ’s Reagan biography, “The Role of a Lifetime,” a selection his press secretary announced over Twitter.

So Barry is looking to Reagan to help his anti-Reagan agenda.

Can you amount the mountains of 1099's some companies are going to get.  Just think of large chains like Office Depot or Lowes or Home Depot and how many millions of business to business relationships they have.  Just think of how many plumbers, remodelers, contractors, landscapers that spend $600.00 with just Depot alone.  Each and every one them has to send a 1099.

How in the hell are companies supposed to just process those.

How about investigating the EPA and FCC end-arounds?  How about the off-shore drilling ban?  How about energy policy in general since it's going to the sky high rates that Obama wants? $5.00 sounds about right according to Obama, remember?

I don't see the point in wasting time investigating the Austrailian nancy-boy.  It's a spy case and he, along with that delicate flower of an Army private, should be tried and put to the firing squad.  Oh, but don't mention anything about Manning's gay butt boy love-sick hissy fit in the process.  That wouldn't be PC.

I don't have any confidence whatsoever that any Issa investigations will get "personal".  I think the GOP establishment is too afraid to touch Obama, Holder, or Barny Frank.  Face it, the fear of being called a racist, or homophobe is too much for the sensitive GOP boys.  The stupids are going to shatter the party if they don't heed the Tea Party mandate.  Once again, they are going to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Did he pull outrageous maneauvers to pass legislation written by corrupt union thugs against the will of the people? Did he golf every day? Yeah, muslims are just like Christians too.

85 Well, the birds could be an avian flu thing, but to take out the fish at the same time...

They're saying they are not connected incidents (although they do seem to have occurred at roughly the same time).  I checked Google maps to see if there was a physical linkage, which there kind of us (with the waterway) but it doesn't prove anything.

I gather the birds are most likely to have died from trauma, because sick birds do not fly.  There was signs of trauma on some of the birds, but it wasn't clear if that was from falling or from something else.  One of the theories was high-altitude hail.

Didn't I see something about torandoes or other violent storms in the south this weekend?

I guess they are thinking the fish died of disease... but I believe the site is downstream of the industrial area, so I would hope they'll check the water.

When is the last time one of these Congressional investigations resulted in actual charges against anyone, or someone in the executive branch losing their job?  Anyone?

Right.  It's not going to happen.  There are many areas of corruption and outright crime to be investigated.  People need to be in jail.  Holder, Frank, Dodd are unquestionably three.  If anyone sets his or her mind to honestly fighting this kind or institutionalized crime and corruption, they will have to put their put their head on the MFM's chopping block.  It's going to take someone with a lot of guts and a steel spine.  Issa may dance and posture a little, but he won't risk his own neck to do the hard work that must be done.  The go-along, get-along attitude will prevail.  It's a damn good thing these kinds of people aren't fighting a war for us.  They would immobilize themselves to avoid negative enemy propaganda.  Come to think of it, that's basically what our "political officers" have been doing, isn't it?

Bottom line - this is a battle.   We are in a battle to try to save this great nation.  It's now or never, so fight!  Yes, there will be casualities, but take as many of the bastards as you can down with you.   Do it, or get out of the way so someone else can get it done.

It's all Sound and Fury signifying nothing anyway.  IMO, the way to handle the issues we've got is: Holder, the Czars, Hillary, &c.  And never, ever, ever go near the third rail of directly mentioning the President.

Then, you can still take out his support network (I didn't realize absolutely vital to his administration they were until I heard he'd only had something like 6 cabinet meetings all last year: that's a lot of autonomy).  As an added bonus, you get to tarnish him in the eyes of public opinion, but if he or any of his cronies complain that it's some attack on the President, you get to play the "guilty conscience" card: as in: "No, we have no open investigations into the President himself.  I do not know why he would see our Constitutionally mandated oversight of Government as a direct attack."

Investigating Afghanistan is like investigating corruption in Chicago or Detroit, only you're even more likely to find corruption about which you can do nothing- and if you try, you'll just look even more impotent.

I'm not even sure they're similar in that.  I don't think that most outstanding orators consider themselves such.  As with most who really have some outstanding talent, they don't believe its that outstanding.

Talk with a good artist some day, almost none of them actually think they're super good- even if they're getting paid for doing it.  Mostly they look at their own work and say, "It'll do, I guess," or "Man, that's crap," to things the rest of us think are pretty fantastic.

115 Ummm.... Watergate?

The difference is it started with a criminal act/arrests and the media was behind taking down Nixon.

Obama has the media to protect him.

Plus, what was the economic climate of the country at that time?  I was pretty young, but I don't recall the bad economy hitting until Ford/Carter.

I just don't think that people who are unemployed or losing their homes are going to be receptive to a bunch of Congressional hearings that seem more about payback and less about solving problems.

I think the first 6 mos the new Congress should focus on presenting solutions and stopping the things that Obama started that we can stop.  Even as a political junkie, I'll be pretty annoyed if all the Republicans do is attack on these specific incidents before they tackle the broader issues.  Things like the Fannie/Freddie mess need attention a lot more than the Black Panthers case - right now.  We need to change the corrupt system.  Then we can hunt for specific heads.

Ironic that Obama, who harbors so much hate for Reagan and his beliefs, is now attempting to emulate his worst enemy to turn his political fortunes around.

120 Looking through the archives and revisiting the Chrysler and GM shakedowns, I came across this from Moe Lane: "Possibly not; thereÂ’s a certain laziness that can be reasonably attributed to the Obama administration, and itÂ’s precisely the sort that you associate with reasonably bright people with a too-healthy appreciation of their own virtues. From bad vetting of executive positions to consistently slapdash efforts inthe basics of international protocol to general exercising of political power, the White House has already demonstrated that they just donÂ’t think things through often enough before they do them. It shouldnÂ’t be too surprising that this heedlessness might extend to behaviors that are bit more ethically tricky." It was funny how Poppin Fresh was all breathless about the madman theory of the presidency or whatever. Sure, Obama is as crooked as the CA coastline, yet seemingly teflon. But he has never been held accountable due to his going from one job to another in his corporate leapfrogging. Now he has nowhere to go but out, and Republicans have the House. They likely cannot get him impeached, but they want power. The next two years will be hell for the Democrats.

147 I mean I think he's bad, but I don't think he's THAT bad...

I think Obama is worse than Nixon.  Nixon's sins were primarily political.  And stupid.

Obama is constantly flaunting the Constitution, ignoring the will of the people, and working around laws by inventing powers his office doesn't have.  And he's much worse on foreign policy.

But the Watergate stuff started with arrests of Nixon's inner circle for something that was clearly illegal.  And Nixon was hated by the media.

Obama will be a one-termer if the Republicans present a legitimate alternative to voting for him to all those stupid older people who let their kids talk them into voting for him and those folks with the white guilt syndrome.  The first step is rebuilding trust in the Republican party.  I don't think hearings do that.  At least, not hearings that appear targeted to political enemies as opposed to hearings about systems that failed in which the point is ostensibly to correct those failures so the economy rebounds.

Yeah, if we couldn't nail Obama's campaign using Sarbanes-Oxley, there's no way in god's green earth we'll nail him on some of this other political shit.

Let's de-fang him as best we can, try to bring some Dems over to vote with us on key things, and fix the economy.  If we do that, 2012 should take care of itself.

And I agree with the idea mentioned earlier about bringing things to a vote, such as on energy issues, so that it's on record who wants to improve things and who wants to kill business and the economy.

Funny thing is, Nixon -- and everybody else, started to panic when the standard economic indicators -- inflation, unemployment and the deficit,  hit the relatively low, by our standards, area of 6% or so.

I can't imagine what they would think about our 10% unemployment for two years and 100% deficits. Pity us, I suppose.

It didn't help that Nixon was intensely paranoid.

He had reason: the MFM, in particular the NYT and WaPo, had been out to get him since the early 1950s for the Alger Hiss case.

Read Whitaker Chambers' Witness. Chambers makes clear that he was going down, and Hiss (who we now know beyond any doubt from the VENONA decrypts was a Soviet spy) was getting a skip because of the strong cheerleading from the NYT and WaPo until Nixon got on the case.

Nixon singlehandedly drove the bus that ran over Hiss's ass (according to Chambers), and the media never forgave him for it.

Nixon knew it, and that's why he was paranoid. Those of us who were around then recall the incessant drumbeat of stories in the NYT, WaPo, and the alphabet networks that kept the story alive. Overzealous staffers, plus Nixon's refusal to throw them to the dogs, and voila! Watergate.

You know... I was kind of thinking about this yesterday and today.  I've come to a decision: I don't care what President BOHICA's motives are.  His motives don't matter.  If his motives really are the advancement of America as he claims (sha, right) or the utter destruction of all reality as we know it, it doesn't matter.  He's a bad actor.  What he is doing is damaging the country regardless of his motives, and he needs to be stopped.

I don't think we need to be arguing over his motives, whether you're on the Limbaugh/Levin/Hannnity side ("He's a socialist!") or the Medved side ("He's a naive incompetent.") shouldn't matter- let's just focus on stopping what he's doing.

If actually followed, this approach would do two things: 1) take away a bone of contention among supposed allies and 2) allow Republicans to say things like "I don't care if the President is a socialist, or not.  He claims to be considering the best interests of America, and I will believe him on that.  His motives are not the question, [Media Hack], the question is the results of his actions: 17%+ real unemployment, a falling dollar, inflation in the sectors the People feel most: energy, food, and other basics.  It is the policies responsible for those results I oppose, and I believe they should be replaced with limited-government, pro-growth policies that get the Government out of the way and let the People keep more of their own money."

Then, every time someone tried to bring up his race, his birth cert, or whatever, Republicans could just go back to: "I'm not talking about the man, I'm talking about the actual, measurable results of his policies."

239 671AD There was the Great Death of Birds--The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle

Ever watch blackbirds flock clear across a county in the morning and evening, making swarming shapes and maneuvering? Ever wonder what a sudden downdraft or change in air pressure would do to one of those?

I once called the local EPA because the stream across from my office was full of dead fish. They laughed. Turns out, a sudden change in temperature, or in the oxygen-carrying capability of the water, kills millions of fish all the time. Happens every day. We never notice.

The McCarty hearings were the first thing I ever watched on TV. I was on my mother's lap. What they caused was the Army-McCarthy hearings, and nothing else. Ditto, the Kefauver Commission: result, several more commissions. I know we have a great attachment to those bright hearing-room lights, but they're mostly symbolic. Don't get your hopes up.

241 Yeah, they'd probably make it some businessman who wanted the city contract that doesn't exist or some other warping of how NYC works to make the narrative.

No no no, it would go something like this:

Evil Republican Corporation (tm) launched a cynical and self-serving political campaign (made possible by the Citizens United decision) full of lies and distortions aimed at cutting city taxes.  When the gullible people of NYC bought the campaign and voted for the tax cuts, then the cash-strapped city government had no choice but to start selling off assets and privatizing city services, and the winning bidder on those contracts was... you guessed it... Evil Republican Corporation (tm)!  But they had to bid so low in order to get the contract, they were actually losing money.  So when the Snowmageddon Blizzard of 2010 hit NYC, the management of Evil Republican Corporation (tm) made a conscious decision to deliberately not clean up the snow and let people die in the street, so as to improve their bottom line, and they could blame it on an Act of God, the snowstorm.  Sam Waterston takes great pleasure in berating the Evil Republican Corporation (tm) CEO on the witness stand, accusing him of being Worse Than Hitler (and GW Bush) for putting profits over people.  Meanwhile, a witness for the prosecution, Good Guy Union President, happily testifies that if only the responsible and professional union members had been in charge of the snow cleanup effort, everything would have turned out just fine.

Maybe Issa could go after Spooky Dude, too.

This is all peripheral shit. Go direct to the root of the problems -- the actions/behavior of Osama Obama, Eric Shabazz Holder, Geithner, et al -- and expose their malfeasance. Impeachment and arrests to follow.

Oh, wait, that would arouse the ire of the "in fairness..." crowd. Mustn't go after popular criminals....

Hearings are an end-run around the media, nothing more.  It forces them to cover something that they'd otherwise ignore.  Nothing more.  It isn't a courtroom.

I cut Issa a lot of slack. He's the Representative from an adjacent district, and the guy who singlehandedly brought down that asshole Gray Davis by starting the recall petition against him. Issa was edged out as governor by the Terminator. More is the pity, because Issa has more balls than Ahnold, and might have been able to pull CA out of its power dive. Ahnold started out strong, but folded like a cheap suit when the Red-infested media (LAT and SF Chron) started shitting on him for not making nice with the Red-infested public sector unions.

So I consider Issa one of the few good guys, until some concrete evidence to the contrary turns up.

265 Boy, these libertarians are either dumb as rocks or their smoke is chronic, dude!

What kind of a hearing could be held on the Sestak case?  The only witnesses are Sestak, who has given a couple of versions of it already and walked back his initial tone, former President Clinton, and Obama.

You're going to call a former President to testify before Congress with nothing more than this?  Obama would come, but he has golf that day - can't he just eat his waffle?

The idea of holding a hearing with nothing more than this is stupid and destructive, as it would make every subsequent investigation subject to the charge, "Just another senseless Republican fishing expedition."

Step away from the bong, dude, you've had enough.

270 This administration is a house of cards, there is so much about Watergate that is similiar in the construction, AG Holder is the key.  If Holder is found to be nothing more than a judicial obstructionist and a cover up artist for the Un-Credentialed, who is covering his butt in every move, then the removal and threatened investigation of Holder himself may prove to be the undoing of the entire administration.  There is so many loose ends to pull any one or more may cause the same effect but Holers absence and protective skill could be the fastest way to kill the beast.
