Rep. Upton: "Like a Dog to the Frisbee"
— Gabriel Malor

Now this is what I'm talking about. Read the advance of George Will's Sunday column about Congressman Fred Upton's plans to challenge the Obama Administration on several fronts.

[L]ast month, the Democratic-controlled Federal Communications Commission, on a partisan 3-2 vote, did what a federal court says it has no power to do: It decided to regulate the Internet in the name of "net neutrality." The next morning, a man who can discipline the FCC said: Well, we'll just see about that. "We are going to be a dog to the Frisbee on this issue."

Also on Upton's list is, of course, repeal of ObamaCare:

But Upton has a bigger repeal in mind. He thinks enough Democrats will join all 242 House Republicans in voting to repeal Obamacare, and that repeal will come within 25 or so votes of the 290 necessary to override a presidential veto. This will intensify pressure on other Democratic members -- imagine their town hall meetings -- who could provide the veto-proof margin.

He's also interested in deregulating Medicaid and stopping the EPA's climate change power grab.

Update: Changed the post. The original Will column implies that Upton, as chair of House Energy and Commerce will seek to repeal the lightbulb ban law that we've talked about previously. But that didn't sound quite right to me and it's because Upton was a champion of that bill in the first place. Upton may have the power to push repeal, but there's no indication to me that he actually intends to.

Bummer.

5 "If Democrats are going to vote to repeal that mess, we'll need to provide them some excuse to do so." Boehner can tell them "A repeal vote is the only thing standing between you and the pitchforks."

Posted by: Cobalt Shiva at January 07, 2011 04:02 AM (sDzFM)

6 Boehner could tell them if they don't vote for repeal now the economy will dive into another Great Depression, then after they vote for it jet off on vacation and wait a week to schedule a giant presser for the bills signing.

Pet peeve here - could we please never, never use the term "climate change"? It was "global warming" and it should stay "global warming". "Climate change" is what the warm-mongers came up with when people started noticing inconvenient things like lots of rain and snow. Don't let them get away with weaseling out of it when their old predictions of heat and drought and melted polar caps don't come true.

They screetched "global warming" for twenty years, they should be stuck with it. If they try to correct you, ask "So what happened to the warming you so confidently predicted?"

16 I watched that hearing yesterday. Upton was a milquetoast; i.e., he was neither adequately prepared, nor sufficiently aggressive - a nice guy and a gentleman, to be sure, but also a wimp who didn't do his homework. Smug and sneering Democrats like Louise Slaughter and Alcee Hastings were contemptuous of his positions on issues, and they ate his lunch.  Not a good sign for the first day of that hearing.

I would really like to see the FCC smacked down.  And then all of its authority taken away.  That would be sweet.

Of course, I'm not sure how we'd prevent radio/tv stations from trying to use the same frequencies, but I'm sure we could come up with something- and why is it the Federal Government's business of someone curses on air?  Regardless of what Society thinks about on-air profanity, how is that the Government's business?

They could certainly figure out how to avoid stepping on each other, and if they have problems they could go to court. The FCC is superfluous -- simply a power grab by the federal government. As for profanity? Here's some for the FCC -- fuck you and your anti-freedom regulations.

As you said, he was a co-sponsor of the stupid CFL light bulb scam. A quick check shows that he meets the very definition of a RINO and most likely a DIABLO as well.

22 Well Issa has submitted legislation to reign in the EPA on the CO2 scam (side bar) but that is not going to be the correct route because Obama will simply veto it even if it does get past the Senate.

It will take a budget bill like we have been discussing for the past many months to get that POS under control.

You poor, deluded bitter clinger. Perhaps if you left behind your preconceived notions of archaic industrial-economy models and try to grasp the beauty and forward thinking brilliance of the new Obamericatm.

The bulbs are manufactured by green industry, which, if you knew anything, you would know do not pollute at all. Just the savings from the lack of pollution dwarfs the small increase in cost per bulb (government subsidy of 200% of retail cost). Th mercury in each bulb can be recycled. Just drive your hybrid to your regional government reclamation center (opening date for site #1: 2017), drop off the bulbs, pay the small fee ($5/bulb), and maybe you will finally feel like you are a part of this brave new world.

A little know fact is that the FCC was not created to allocate radio station frequencies. There was already a federal department in place that did that. It was allocated to shutdown radio stations and programs that opposed FDR and his policies.

It was a blatant censorship grab by the FDR adm and it was rubber stamped by the commie congress. Never think that if you get enough Dems together that they would vote themselves in to a communist dictatorship.

Like this:

Fred Upton wins House energy gavel

Overcoming concerns that he's too moderate for the job, Rep. Fred Upton emerged Tuesday as the winner of a bitter internal Republican battle to lead the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee.

The Michigan Republican won the steering panel nod with critical support from Rep. John Boehner and a collection of senior and rank-and-file GOP lawmakers closely allied with the incoming House speaker.

The full GOP caucus must now ratify UptonÂ’s selection Wednesday, but that is expected to be a formality as former Energy and Commerce Chairman Joe Barton (R-Texas) told POLITICO he will not challenge the steering committeeÂ’s decision.

With his win, Upton navigated an internal GOP feud between the upstart tea party movement and the party's rank-and-file establishment. Conservative commentators Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck both called him a socialist on their programs because of his co-authorship of legislation banning the incandescent light bulb. Former House GOP Majority Leader Dick Armey's Freedom Works tea party campaign ran a 'Down With Upton' Internet petition campaign.

As mentioned in the article,  Comrade Upton has begum purging the committee staff of ideological undesirables.

The Republicanstm win again.

Well I guess there is no chance that Boner will get him to allow a "firebrand" to take the lead on attacks. We are seriously boned on this committee. It is now worthless.

Tell me again why it is better to elect RINOs in blue States?

This also gives me grave doubts about Boner.

Posted by: Vic at January 07, 2011 05:18 AM (M9Ie6)

37      At the end of the day it is imperative that we hold Guys like Upton accountable. Lest the RINOs revert to the spineless hacks they had become by 2006. They do not have the courage to "raise the flag and slit the throats" of the liberals. The conservatives in Congress need to fear us who elected them more than they fear the other side of the aisle.  Guys like Upton are just just like the little flags on top of the goalposts.  We need to look at them see which direction they are blowing and then kick the ball.

39 ALL, we need to get off the Mercury kick on these bulbs. There is enough ammunition out there on all the other scores without that one which is simply not true. The amount of Hg in these bulbs is microscopic and beneath the level of notice.

If we hand this too them on a platter I guarantee it will come back at a later time to bite us in the ass when they want to ban some really needed product because of microscopic Hg content.

40 The voters spoke as clearly as they ever have in the last election. You would think the Repubs would be more assertive. Seems like they may just be more interested in business as usual. The base won't be so fired up in 2012 if this is the case, especially if a RINO is nominated

In other words, these people fear nothing.  So what if they are voted out of office, they will still have their pension and they will take some high paying job.  They always win and land on their feet so they really don't care what the American people think.

57 to Speaker-in-waiting John Boehner and his leadership team, Upton is a team player who may stray on many votes but can be counted on to throw roadblocks in front of President Obama's plans for health care and climate change.

Conservatives on the Hill, in think tanks and on K Street are fighting to keep Upton from the chair, but Upton's closeness with Boehner -- including his record of raising funds for GOP candidates and coming to heel when Boehner has snapped the whip -- could ensure he gets the gavel.

Upton earned conservative ire with his liberal voting record, including votes on energy and health policy, which are under E&C's jurisdiction. Out of 158 returning Republican congressmen, Upton ranks as the 10th most liberal, judging by lifetime American Conservative Union ratings.

While outsiders focus on Upton's ideology, Republican House staffers know that a lawmaker's voting record isn't how party loyalty is measured on the Hill. Leadership staffers and K Street lobbyists emphasized to me how much Upton has raised for other Republican candidates -- through his TRUST PAC, by hosting fundraisers, and by transferring funds from his campaign.

By giving Upton the gavel, Boehner would anger the conservative base. By denying Upton the chair, Boehner would disrupt the system of seniority and fundraising incentives that makes the conference function.

This is why the RNC is broke. Party loyalty is not measured by how well a member supports the ideology and platform of the party. It is measure by how much money they can raise from freakin' lobbyists.

It is definitely time for new leadership. It is time for some more primaries. It looks like chances are good we will be boned for another 2 years despite taking the House by a wide margin.

It is odd that this law effecting every single home, business and public place in the nation has gotten so little attention. Hopefully it'll be repealed with the same lack of fanfare with which it was instituted. As to the Mercury issue, I think it's the smartest way to make the appeal (if one is needed) to the people wavering. It objectively exists in the bulbs, whereas every other criticism of the bulb is subjective. I've had Libs tell me with a straight face that the love the new CFL's as we're sitting there waiting for them to warm up. They can and do lie about the quality, cost, "green-ness", etc. of the CFL's but they can't pretend the Mercury doesn't exist.

75 Not to worry...hopefully we'll soon have on the market a new product: heat balls, which are 95% at converting electricity to heat, for localized warmth. The incidentally waste about 5% as visible light, so you shouldn't look directly into the ball. Fortunately, they can easily be installed into pre-existing fixtures in your house, and the excess light can be softened using a "lampshade" which most people already have. The Germans already have them: http://www.redstate.com

My neighbor down the street had an accident with mercury in their house and called the MD dept of hazardous waste or some such fucking agency.  Apparently a mercury thermometer/thermostat broke in their basement.  They had to move out for weeks while the Gubmint agency assessed their problem then cleaned it up.  They had just moved here when their house was destroyed by Katrina.

There is no fucking way that I will use these lightbulbs if given another option and if I have to, they are going right in the trash when done.  No recycling...nothing.  If these fuckers are going to make me put hazardous materials in my house, they're getting them right back into the landfill.

Here's an Idea! Let people keep their incandescent light bulbs, and build about 500 nuclear power plants across America. As environmentally green as it gets, with NO carbon, pollution, etc., and an practically unlimited power. Now who could possibly be opposed to that? Not the French, that we are constantly told by the Left are the superior model for us to espouse!

Anyone who claims to be concerned about the environment, dependence on foreign fuel or those evil oil companies, but doesn't list nuclear power as their number one goal is either ignorant or a fraud. Nuke power would solve all of those "problems", but it would also strengthen America's positon in the world, which is the exact opposite of the Greenies goal.

89 44 The voters spoke as clearly as they ever have in the last election. You would think the Repubs would be more assertive. Seems like they may just be more interested in business as usual. The base won't be so fired up in 2012 if this is the case, especially if a RINO is nominated Both parties take the ups and downs of elections in stride. They've got a two party monopoly on power and a passive, largely disengaged populace. They know all losses are temporary. In the long run, the two entities will meld into one.

Posted by: Lincolntf at January 07, 2011 10:34 AM (hUf/c) Right, because EVERYTHING the Left (Greenies included) espouses must be viewed thru the prism of hurting American power in the world. That's why nuclear reactors are OK for France, but horrible for America. The left has always viciously hated the United States, precisely because it is at once powerful & anti-statist. BTW way, when is the GOP going to hold hearings on George Soros? I'd love to see that bastard hauled before Congress and made to explain himself. I hope President Palin or whoever sicks the IRS after him, too.

91 Rush Limbaugh said 16 or 17 years ago that, with the fall of the Soviet Union, Greenies were just the hard-core Communists who changed their name and who came up with a slicker marketing strategy, recognizing that they could advance their agenda more effectively and destabilize Capitalism with their sly, disingenuous and insideous environmental programs.

I like to follow the environmentalists wackos off my porch asking them about nuclear power? Why are you opposed to it? Why can the navy use it without a problem but we aren't building reactors? How many people were killed at 3 mile island? What happened there? Was the China syndrome fact or fiction? Who did it star? Why can france have nuclear power and we can't? Why don't you want the US to have it's own power resources?

You're partly wrong, mainly because you misunderstand (and underestimate) Osama Obama. He knows full well what he's doing and has a definite agenda in place. Just because he learned his hatred for America from others -- he actually has no experience with living in the America the rest of us have known -- doesn't mean his immature lust for revenge on The Man isn't real.

Boner, on the other hand, strikes me as the classic rube, a nice-enough guy who would be right at home running the local hardware store and being a big in the Chamber of Commerce.

Neither one of them should have any part of running the country, but for opposite reasons. The Mohammedan Mouthpiece is an enemy of all that the USA stands for, while Boner is simply in way over his head. The sharks will eat him alive.

I don't misunderstand ot underestimate Obama. I know exactly where he is coming from.

That doesn't alter the facts that he doesn't have any executive, managerial or leadership skills, that he is an empty suit, that he is a street hustler and that he is a decadent dilletante. He coasted to the top with his charm and with a lot of help from affirmative action and political correctness - not with any qualifications to become POTUS, nor because he has ever rolled up his sleeves and gotten his hands dirty, figuratively speaking.

I keep them in their original sleeve packaging, then use crumpled paper along the bottom, sides, and top of the cardboard packing box.  A standard UHaul type box can hold around 60-70 incandescents.
