Report: Ryan Taking A Pass On Senate Run
— DrewM

Good, he's far more valuable as a leader in the House than a junior member of the Senate.

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., is staying in the House, and won't run for the U.S. Senate, two well-placed GOP sources tell National Journal.

Ryan began informing close friends of his decision Tuesday and is expected to announce later in the day.

Good, now he can run for President.

Meanwhile, are you ready for a Tommy Thompson run?

Thompson would give Republicans a popular former four-term governor to seriously challenge for this toss-up seat, which could prove the difference as Senate Democrats struggle to defend their majority with now eight retirements.

ThompsonÂ’s entry would even further intensify a race that already seems destined to be one of the most watched in the nation: Wisconsin has been at the center of the national political discussion since Gov. Scott WalkerÂ’s showdown with unions over collective bargaining in February that prompted weeks of protests at the state capitol in Madison. In the months since, even what would have almost certainly otherwise been a sleepy race for a state supreme court seat turned into a pitched battle, now in its third week of the recount.

4 I am so glad Ryan's not running for Senate.  We need him in the House, holding the purse strings.  If he runs for President I will absolutely support him, but I honestly would prefer it if he stays where he is and keeps hitting that drum of fiscal sanity.

Posted by: MWR at May 17, 2011 06:17 AM (4df7R)

5 But yea. This shit won't get serious until August. Maybe later... October.

Posted by: Zakn at May 17, 2011 06:18 AM (zyaZ1)

6 I'm surprised that Thompson is running, but absolutely thrilled.  In a state where we were going to have a *REAL* tough time no matter what (because of the union battles, because it's a Presidential year, and because it's so evenly divided no matter what) Thompson's getting involved makes this the closest thing to a "lean Republican" race as could be imagined.  Not only that, but (assuming he doesn't implode or something unlikely like that) he'll make it easier for the eventual GOP nominee to carry the state.

The idea of having two GOP senators from Wisconsin makes me laugh, long and loud and clear.

8 You know what I'd love to see?  Tommy Thompson vs. Tammy Baldwin.  That would be Godzilla vs. Bambi -- Thompson would win with 55%+ of the vote.

Tommy vs. Russ Feingold would be fascinating.

9 Yeah, the only good thing about Tommy Thompson in the Senate is that presumably he'll vote for the  right majority leader.

38 I feel so left out. No senate race here in 2012 and us political newbies + I guess the social cons chose a conservative DA vs the GOP long timer and spender and then lost a close senate race in 2010. At least we flipped two house seats back from the Ds, but WI has a good shot at 2 R senators and we are stuck with 2 Ds. And especially if we get rid of Bammy we'll probably stay D in the 2014 race. Folks will want some gridlock and Udall is a savvy politician. I'll gladly take Udall staying and Bammy gone mind you but I sure wish we had gotten the conservative elected last fall.

44 I'm not thrilled with Tommy Thompson running, but can live with it.

The caveat is that Thompson has to shit or get off the pot VERY QUICKLY when it comes to this race, as he's got a nasty habit of showing up, sucking all the oxygen out of the room, and then saying "Sorry, not gonna run", which leaves the GOP even worse off because potential candidates bail if they see he's going to run.

Homeland Security.  ItÂ’s a punchline.  A sad one, but none-the-less a punchline.

Posted by: Herman Cain for President at May 17, 2011 10:19 AM (jx2j9)

From link:

ICE Waits Months To Warn Agents Of Gang Hit Plots

President ObamaÂ’s Department of Homeland Security endangered the lives of federal officers by waiting months to alert them of a notoriously violent Salvadoran gangÂ’s plots to murder Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and their families.

The daunting information was brought to Judicial Watch by outraged Homeland Security sources that provided the written memo warning ICE agents in the U.S. that the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) had specific plans to kill agents and their families in Virginia and Maryland. The problem is that Janet NapolitanoÂ’s agency sat on the intelligence for two months while federal officers risked their lives to protect the nation.

As early as March the FBI obtained reliable information that a high-ranking MS-13 gang banger in El Salvador ordered the hit on ICE agents and their family members, according to Homeland Security sources. The FBI informant also said that MS-13 members who killed any ICE agent in Maryland or northern Virginia would get a $50,000 reward.

For unknown reasons, Homeland Security officials sat on the information until this week while unsuspecting agents performed their duties. Distributed as an internal “Officer Safety Advisory,” the alert says that the agency is forwarding the information for “rapid awareness due to the threat specificity and the current elevated concern regarding drug cartel violence against US law enforcement personnel.”

Sorry, disagree. I think T-Paw will win the primary and Romney will burn out by the time of the SC primary.

I'm glad you disagree and I hope you're right.

I'm simply basing this on the history of Republican primaires, specifically the party's nature of picking the next guy in line.

From 1952-2008, only one have we picked someone who wasn't
next in line and that was Barry Goldwater.  And well maybe GW Bush to a lesser extent.

Even Reagan in 1980 was the frontrunner before he got in. He almost took the nomination in 1976.

It just seems to be what the party does. Romney and Huckbee were next in line, and with Huckabee out, that leaves just Romney.

I don't think Romney could win the primaries, if he were running against only one or two other republicans, but the current field is going to divide the non-Romney vote enough to get him through.

While I am open to Pawlenty, and think given the current declared field he is our best bet, I  don't think he's got a real chance.

74 >>>I've heard Russ Feingold actually isn't all that thrilled about the prospect of another election, so he might not be the Democratic opponent.

I sure hope so.  Because only Feingold (that I can think of) would really make this a race against Thompson.  Tammy Baldwin, the only other declared candidate, would be destroyed hilariously (she would run up Dane County's vote, of course, but lose overwhelmingly everywhere else, moreso than any typical Democrat).

75 Sorry, disagree. I think T-Paw will win the primary and Romney will burn out by the time of the SC primary.

Sorry, the Republican Party leadership has figured out a way to make the SC primary immaterial. The first "conservative State" primary will have a split vote while all the rest afterwards will be winner take all.

This is why Romney can take a chance on skipping SC.

This is OT, but... bwa-ha-ha!!!

Hilarious.

I loved this part too:

"A lot of people are expected to come in on weekends and work late," Winch said. "They don't mind that culture, because they feel they are engaged in very important work, but they would like more recognition money for the fact that they do make those sacrifices."

86 Sorry, the Republican Party leadership has figured out a way to make the SC primary immaterial. The first "conservative State" primary will have a split vote while all the rest afterwards will be winner take all. This is why Romney can take a chance on skipping SC. "Sorry, disagree. I think T-Paw will win the primary and Romney will burn out by the time of the SC primary."

I see no way Romney can win the nomination. He will be dead come super Tuesday. I don't think T-Paw has the necessary image and energy to win. So my guess is Palin or whoever Palin backs. Bachman? Maybe. Christie/Ryan - distant possibility. The old geezer's need to sit down and shutup. At best they become the backbench of advisors. Worse, they become Colon Powells and constantly run to the media saying "thats not what I would do."

93 More evidence that Bachmann is going to announce her run

And as I said yesterday, if she does Palin will not.

Tammy Bruce hates Bachmann with the force of a thousand strap-ons because she considers her a stalking horse for Romney and the Repuke establishment.

Posted by: Captain Hate at May 17, 2011 07:03 AM (l3wWa)

94 75 I sure hope so.

She'd be knocked-out in a primaries. But it would be funny if the Dems did pick her to be their standard-bearer for the 2012 election.

96 I think the presidential campaign season is way too long.  How late can you declare your candidacy.  I think the republicans should wait as long as they can before putting out their candidate.  After a while people are just sick of it and some don't vote and some vote for the best commercial they've seen in the last two days before the vote or who the local paper says is "good".  So the system is not conducive to public participation, since the world is so fast paced, this process is a dinosaur.

97 65 Sorry, disagree. I think T-Paw will win the primary and Romney will burn out by the time of the SC primary.   I agree. Right now out of the current field that would be my guess too. The thing is, short of Ryan or Christie running, I can't see anyone coming in right now that would shake it up enough to change that happening. I think Romney will win a few battles but he's damaged himself too much with Rokmeycare.   Cain, can be a wildcard but not enough experience IMHO.  Other than T-Paw I could live with him bieng the nominee though.     Newt killed his own candidacy because he's a moron.   Bachman is a good person to rally the base but doesn't have broad enough appeal within the party to get the nod. (Not saying its right)   Santorum. Bitch Please.   Luap Nor. Really? I mean teh internets polling aside, C'mon.

98 “It’s typical of Newt to be whimsical,” [former Gingrich rival Dick] Armey said in a phone interview with POLITICO on Monday. “We always say: Newt always has so many great ideas. Well yeah, but then he shifts between them at such a rate it’s pretty hard to track it let alone keep up with it.”…

I think Romney has to win NH.  If he doesn't win in his 'backyard', people are going to start abandoning him and he will faceplant by Super Tuesday.  Momentum is everything in an election.

Considering he lost in 2008 to McCain and that the state is redder now than it was, he's got a fight on his hands.

103 Interesting Cain comment (from Big Government):

“Knowing how Washington works isnÂ’t necessarily an advantage,” Cain told reporters. “As a businessman going in, I donÂ’t want to know how Washington works. I want to change Washington, D.C.  And so by not knowing how it is supposed to work, I can ask tough questions that will help change the culture. ThatÂ’s my objective.”

A founder of the Des Moines Tea Party is escorting Cain around Des Moines today.  Cain is scheduled to be in Marshalltown and Cedar Rapids tomorrow. On Saturday in Atlanta — at what Cain described as “high noon” — Cain will make an announcement about his presidential ambitions.

That's a good attitude to have but he's still going to need some advisers intimately familiar with the system in order to overhaul things.

108 "If Congress dominates the President, you shouldn't be worried about an Obama second term.

Posted by: Oldcat at May 17, 2011 11:02 AM"

Actually a weak President would give the best chance for the States to take back their 10th Amendment rights.  Get that Federal behemoth back under control.  Obama is too crappy to be allowed a 2nd term, but we still need strength, depth, commitment, and willingness to see-it-through at other levels of the government besides the Presidency.  That's why I get pissed at all the talk to recruit sitting Governors as Presidential candidates and, by extension, other persons in positions whose work is not yet completed.

If Ryan leaves the House, who will pick up the slack?  He won't be able to do it effectively if he's engaged in a Presidential bid.  The pathway that his plan outlines is by no means assured of continuance.  Let him lead and win the policy fight - then run for President.

111 If thompson really runs, hell maybe giuliani will run for senate against gillibrand. I think the reason he didn't last year was simply a matter of diminished returns-he'd have to raise all over again 24 months later. Who knows. But my dream would be dewine beating brown in ohio, thompson easily winning in wisconsin, g beating gillitard in ny, nelson, testor, mccaskill, nelson(fl), and stabenow all losing, and picking up the open seats in north dakota, florida, new mexico, and long shot flips in hawaii and minnesota. 60 seat supermajority. The rino caucus made utterly powerless.. I have a better shot of getting stuck by lightning seconds after winning the megamillions than this happening, but hey. I can dream.o

112 I used to think it wouldn't be right for guys like Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio, or Allen West to run for President this year because it's not their time and the LSM would tear into their lack of "Washington experience".

But Obama's dropped the bar to the floor, hasn't he? Anyone over 35 who is a, ummm, U.S. citizen can run.

I thought it's not right for the youngin's to run. But, in light of the dearth of veteran talent and Chris Christie's Jimmy Chitwood routine, screw it! Let's start the freshman Fab Five style!

The LSM can't say shit. Ohhh, they'll try.. "Well, it's true Obama was less experienced than Ryan, but Obama now has 3 years of experience, so let's move the goal posts, shall we? And, while we're at it, let's pretend that we think foreign policy has always been really important to us, k?"
