Report: State Department Spokesman PJ Crowley Resigns
— DrewM

Normally not that big of a deal but this guy is a real tool, even by the low standards one generally has for professional mouthpieces and people who work at the State Department.

It hasn't been confirmed yet but the reason is suspected to be his recent idiotic comments about the treatment of accused Wikileaks source Bradley Manning.

State Department spokesperson P.J. Crowley, speaking at an academic event regarding new media and foreign policy Thursday, called the treatment of accused Wikileaks leaker Pfc. Bradley Manning "ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid," according to reporting from BBC reporter Philippa Thomas.

Crowley was speaking at an event at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he was asked about the treatment of Manning, who is currently detained at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va.

Crowley criticized the Defense Department's handling of Manning but added that "Nonetheless Bradley Manning is in the right place." Crowley continued that "there is sometimes a need for secrets... for diplomatic progress to be made."

Crowley's comments got lost in the bigger news of Libya and then Japan but his fate was pretty well sealed on Friday when Obama was asked about them and Manning's treatment in general. Obama sidestepped the Crowley comments but said this about Manning's pre-trial confinement.

"With respect to Private Manning, you know, I have actually asked the Pentagon whether or not the procedures that have been taken in terms of his confinement are appropriate and are meeting our basic standards," Mr. Obama said. "They assured me that they are. I can't go into details about some of their concerns, but some of this has to do with Private Manning's safety as well."

Yeah, putting the President in that spot is not a career enhancing move.

I've long disliked Crowley because of his comments during the 2009 Iran uprising.

The State Department strongly rejected claims that the U.S. was interfering in the disputed June 12 election, pointing out that diplomats from other countries had also been summoned.

"I suspect we are in good company. As the president has said, we are not interfering in the debate that Iranians are having about their election and its aftermath," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley. "This is not about the United States."

If you follow the link, you'll see that I was not amused at the use of the word "debate" to describe the slaughter of peaceful protesters. My language was a tad bit harsh and somewhat unprofessional but I was infuriated at the time. In retrospect if I could do it over again...I"d use even harsher language.

Not that the next mouthpiece will be better or the policy they will be spinning for will be any more coherent but I'm happy to see this guy go.

100 I have a question. Why is Bradley Manning confined to a Marine Brig? Doesn't the Army have detention facilities to handle these kind of people? One would surely think so. The Stockade at Fort Dix should be sufficient to handle Army prisoners. You can be sure that if a Navy or Marine criminal was put in an Army stockade, there would be a major inter-service row over this.

1st Y-Not's comment:

OK, does anyone read ProteinWisdom regularly?  What's happened over there?  I used to read it, but kind of lost interest when the main host got involved in some sort of blog battle and subsequent whiny emotional meltdown.  But now I discover (via a link at Patterico) that they have really jumped the shark and are accusing Ace, HotAir, and Patterico of going full-blown Katrina over the Japan coverage.  They've decided that all is well with the nukes in Japan and that's the end of it.

And there are about a dozen commenters over there.

What happened?  Are we seeing the emergence of LGF 2.0?

@8

You're full of shit.  I posted a link to one story -- at the time, it happened to be the most up to date -- with very little commentary.  Then, realizing I'm not a "journalist" and that I'm not tasked with "covering" the story in Japan (my not being there, and my not having the requisite background in either nuclear physics or reactor mechanics) I went out and had a few pints, then walked around the outdoor mall in Boulder yesterday.

If you take issue with something on the commenters said, have at it.  But how that turned into a suggestion that pw is going the way of the ponytailed hag is just silly.

But then, you took your cues from a certain DA who just can't seem to quit me.  So I guess you can be forgiven a bit for being a douche.  I mean, you fucked up, you trusted him!

Chris Wallace interviewed that bitch, the attorney, last week. At one point she made it VERY clear that the media is only helping to get their message out,

I say fuck them! Cut them off at the fucking knees. Deprive them of any coverage whatsoever. Make them crazy by denying them the attention they so desperately crave. Let them die the small, irrelevent, sad and lost fucks that they are. And when they do, fail to even mention it in the news.

DAYTON — The city’s Civil Service Board and the U.S. Department of Justice (holder/obama) have agreed on a lower passing score for the police recruit exam after it was rejected because not enough blacks passed the exam.

The city lowered both written exams a combined 15 points that resulted in 258 more people passing the exam, according to a statement released Thursday by Civil Service officials. The agreement allows the city to immediately resume its plans to hire police and firefighters.

While the WBCers are hateful, they aren't stupid.  They know how to work the legal system, since many of them are lawyers.  I really don't know what can be done if they show up to protest, other than have some people form a human chain and keep the WBCers separate from the mourners and the funeral itself.

326 Anyone watch this show?

Does an underprivileged childhood excuse a criminal adulthood? Are our futures predetermined by the circumstances surrounding our birth? Who is fit to stand in judgment of our deeds? These are all questions that David Simon, the creator of the groundbreaking television series "The Wire," raises in a statement released following the arrest on Thursday of Felicia (Snoop) Pearson, one of his show's most memorable stars.

Pearson, 30, who was born to a crack-addicted mother and convicted at age 14 of second-degree murder, rose to international stardom after depicting - with, it must be said, stunning authenticity - an eponymous drug-assassin in seasons three through five of the series. Police in Baltimore rounded her up on Thursday in a large-scale marijuana and heroin bust aimed at dismantling one of the regions major drug gangs.

In his statement, Simon professes that he is saddened by the news, but pivots swiftly to shift blame away from Snoop in particular and onto America's "War on Drugs" in general: The writers of "The Wire" "believe the war on drugs has devolved into a war on the underclass, that in places like West and East Baltimore, where the drug economy is now the only factory still hiring and where the educational system is so crippled that the vast majority of children are trained only for the corners, a legal campaign to imprison our most vulnerable and damaged citizens is little more than amoral."

371 What was it that NYC jihadi said after he was caught by the FBI planning a suicide bomb attack in the subway?  Oh yeah, "We love death more than you love life!"

Always remember that.
