My point was- either she'll get good at it (which, if so, she would have eventually anyway) or she won't (in which case she'll get let go).

If she was going to get good at it, she could certainly have started as a mayor or member of a city council, speaking to that media (out of necessity) and getting better at it as she moved up the rung.  The same is true here, and at least taxpayer dollars aren't going to pay for her to learn those skills- she'll sink or swim on her own merits.

Really, I don't have a problem with it.  Is it irksome since it is so obviously nepotism and privilege?  Yeah.  But I don't watch NBC much (except for Sunday Night Football) anyway.

--The only Ivies (the Ivy League is not a vague term, but is a real athletic conference as well) are Harvard, Yale, Penn, Dartmouth, Brown, Columbia, Princeton and Cornell.

There are schools that are referred to as "Public Ivies" (e.g., UVA, Cal, UNC, and William and Mary) but that has no formality to it other than all are public.

Actually, I think her academic record makes her fairly well qualified to serve as a newsperson, particlary with the degree in History.  As I understand it, Newt Gingrich is primarily a historian by education, and I consider him to be a pretty smart fellow (which doesn't mean he doesn't have unfortunate baggage elsewhere, but that's a different story).

We have plenty of talking heads on TV who have apparently earned a degree in 'Talking Head' somewhere, but don't know a damn thing otherwise.  I'll reserve judgment on Chelsea, who obviously got her job based on her family rather than her qualifications, until I see how she performs. 

If she's up to the job, good for her.  If she turns out to be another Meghan McCain, I hope she gets fired.

When she was going to Sidwell Friends, I was working as a server at a local establishment.  She and a "friend" (boyfriend? idk) came in late night, sat at a 2 top and ordered fries, two cokes, and chicken strips.  They didn't talk much, but her SS detail was pretty cool.  He sat at the bar, a few feet away but close enough to keep an eye, and ordered ribs. 

The guy who owned the restaurant used to be college floormates/suitesmates with Bubba when they were at Georgetown, and he was bemused by the fact that I was a conservative so much so that when Bubba and his entourage came to the restaurant one night I got to wait on him.  It was weird... and yes, he hit on me.  And no, I didn't.  But he did leave a fat tip.

There are also the "Southern Ivies" that went as far as trying to start up the Magnolia Conference. Those schools being Duke, Tulane, Rice, SMU, Emory, Vanderbilt,  and Miami (Fla).

While Stanford and NYU are not Ivies, they are AAU schools which are the upper echelon of universities in the US and Canada.

194 I read all these "how to get a job" and "best way to write a resume" and job searching horror stories with amusement.

I'll tell ya: I make an $84k base salary, my wife is in nursing college (so doesn't work) and I have 2 young children, and my company pays for all 4 of our medical- I don't even have to contribute. I left high-school in the 11th grade and self-taught myself server-side IT management starting in the early 90's.

I worked construction in those days and ran a recording studio, back and forth, but learned more programming, web design and now development and during the early '00s freelanced, competing against kids to do websites for local businesses, doing as much spec work as actual 'getting paid' work, and had to cut my prices to nothing just to get work.

But in the last 3-4 years, something broke, websites became more dependent on server-side features that amateur coders couldn't fathom, I guess. Since then, I make unimaginable (for me) salary and don't work very hard at all.

These days, I telecommute (worth at least a couple hundred a week, gas, wear and tear on auto, business clothes, travel time, I never have had an office job in my life) and haven't seen my boss since he hired me last spring. I sometimes work a 12 hour day, but some days I don't work at all. I'd guess I do 30-50 hours a week, it varies.

It's been nice because for the first 3 years of my daughter's life I've been able to stay home with her every day and not have to send her out to strangers in Day Care, plus I spend a lot of time with my son as well. I don't know how we'd do it if I had to go into an office, because full-time college takes all my wife's time.

My present boss hired me away from my previous job doing the same work from home by offering me 12k a year over what I previously made. Talking to friends and peers, I expect I'd be able to land a job making over $100k if I were willing to actually look around or go in to an office. I'm holding out for a telecommuting job paying over $100k, and I think I'll end up getting one, and without looking, just by waiting. I get 2-3 serious offers a week, but nothing high enough to shift me, as I like my boss and company right now, so I need at least $10-15k more to make a move.

I didn't look for the job I have now, my present boss found me from my old company's Staff page (which I had always thought was a dumb idea, listing the staff, anyway, turns out it was good for me but bad for them).

I watch people commuting sometimes, or doing some suck-ass job like retail, or working out in the hot sun, or read about people lining up 500 deep to apply for a job or about unemployment benefits running out and I just shake my head.

I did have to change jobs last year due to a company I was working for going under (it was an internet startup, high mortality rate on those, but new ones born daily) but I was immediately inundated with offers.

Out of inertia I just stayed in the city I was in and took a telecommuting job, but companies offered to relocate me and my family, retrain me if necessary, supply housing and a car, etc.

The so-called economic downturn and financial crisis has not affected me a whit. In fact, every year and every job change, I've made more money (and added to my portfolio and experience and skills).

Have I just planned my life well, am I just a lucky son-of-a-bitch, or are all these other people just fuck-ups?

I just share this to give all you sad-sacks out there looking for a job hope. Or really piss you off.
