Rick Perry at the Republican Leadership Conference
— Dave in Texas

Rick Perry's speech in New Orleans.

Some bites.

"This administration in Washington clearly believes that government is not only the answer to every need but it's the most qualified to make essential decision in every area.. " It's arrogant. Check.

"EPA, killing jobs in Louisiana. They think they know best. I disagree." Check.

Gray hair that I recall seeing a month or so ago. Gone. Check.

"Bail out money for businesses 'too big to fail'. Bad" Check.

Points to the future, and ponders our present actions. Check.

"Revive the American dream". Check.

And now the Texas story. Job creation. 47.8% of all jobs created in the nation in the last 2 years. Total check. Balanced budget. Check check.

1. Don't spend all the money.

2. Keep the taxes low.

3. Have regulations that are fair and predictable.

4. Tort reform. (well, ok, we did recently pass some, which includes "hey, you bring a stupid lawsuit and lose, you pay for all this crap). I'm ok with this. LOSER PAYS.

He's touting the Texas economic story. When 1500 Americans a day are coming to Texas, that's a pretty good story to run on.

"Our loudest opponents on the left are never going to like us, so let's stop trying to curry favor with them". <-- oh yes. That will resonate.

Talks about state house results, and how conservatives want to return power to the people. And how DC pols won't do that until it's demanded.

These aren't specific points at all. One of my friends here wanted to hear more of that, and I appreciate that he did, cause he's waaay ahead of the curve when it comes to what the voters want to hear.

But this is the kind of speech the voters want to hear. Even if he flubbed "of the people by the people for the people." (the order)

He's running. He's going on the economy.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen

265,000 jobs have been created in Texas in the last two years.

Thank you and good night.

Dave, would I be correct in assuming if he gets in, he would be your guy, considering the field?

I'm beginning to lean that way.  I think he satisfies the most people within the Republican tent, and is probably good enough for Tea Party purposes.  We ain't getting Ryan/Christie etc.

A compromise between Mittens and Bachmann iow.

Perry's ability to garner female votes (my assumption) breaks any ties (should their be one) between TPaw, Mittens and the like.

I still need to know/learn a bit more.

I've never seen him debate for one thing.  How quick is he on his feet?  I already assume him to be the consummate politician, which can be both good and bad.

I'm very impressed, and he's right, its so much easier to build and expand a business in TX than pretty much any other state.

The fraud will no doubt, say "another Texan"?!?

well Obama is from IL, well many of those IL companies are moving to Texas, so would people vote for the person whose state is losing jobs or a state getting those jobs? My vote goes to the latter.

I've never heard the man give a speech, very direct and simple, I like that. Plus no teleprompter, my vote's going to him. Forget Romney, Perry's got my vote for the primaries.

41 I have a feeling that this is the only one coming out of the Republican camp that can actually beat the Joker, but that doesn't mean that he is perfect because he has lots of warts (especially on immigration).  But, I look at it this way Bush did some things right and this guy appears to be in the same mold, so we need to prevent the spendthrift years like 2000-2006 by electing strong conservatives to the Congress to balance any wackiness that this guy tries to put over.   The only other guy that might have a shot is Ryan, but he hasn't been making any clear overtures that he might be running. Plus, I think he will sit out if Perry enters the race, which isn't a bad thing because he can continue to push government spending reform from Congress.  Perry would be wise to put Michelle on the ticket and then proceed to kick butt.

51 Sure, he's got skeletons in his closet, and they'll be brought out.

Having watched his evolution over the years - he started out plastic, fake-y, really politician-like. Like Mitt. Over the last few years as age has mellowed him and he's discovered that he doesn't NEED the Bushies in order to win, he's gotten more Tea Party guy and seems to be comfortable with himself and having a ball.

Of the "two Rick's", I think the current one is the real deal.

He changed a lot after he kicked Kay Bailey's ass to hell and back. I think he had wondered if maybe the Bush/RINO/money machine might be too strong to anger, but Rick went for it, and he won. His confidence has been kinda charming.

Good track record as gov, and no major negatives (a few decisions I'd quibble with, but every pol has some). Plus he could absolutely hammer Obama on the jobs issue. Just nail him with the numbers. That'd win a lot of independents, and probably even a decent number of moderate Democrats.

A Palin endorsement is the key for Perry to neutralize Bachmann and cruise to victory in the primaries.

Yeah.  For all the battles this place has about Palin, I think we can probably all agree that her endorsement of him would be huge as far as the primaries go/separating him from other candidates.

122 I could definitely get behind a Perry run for president.  It would be damned hard to attack him; KBH tried everything she could, with the Bushes and Cheney behind her, and he absolutely steamrollered her in the primaries.  He also kicked Bill White's butt very handily, even with the voter fraud that went on in Houston.  I think he's got a very solid economic argument, a good executive record that's longer than Obama's and far more successful, and great hair.

also it would be hilarious to have an Aggie president

(in the car today:
Me:  I'm just saying, it would be awesome to have an Aggie president.  It would drive the Longhorns nuts, and we would gloat insufferably.

No, not Bush.

Its pretty much a given that every TX governor will have some death penalty hangover, since TX is one of the only states still actually executing people, and that riles up many anti-death penalty sorts.

IIRC, the story with Perry was that he fired some subordinate to stonewall an investigation into a possible execution of an innocent man.

Its probably this, though the account on this page is fairly weak.

Of course I don't see who Obama could pick that would help him. A "moderate" democrat points out Obama is a hard lefty. Another lefty democrat focuses attention on Obama's myriad policy failures.

===

Despite her current popularity, I seem to recall last time Hillary not being able to win the Democrat nomination over Obama.

She's already part of his cabinet, and bluntly, not exactly doing a bang-up job on foreign policy.  Is displacing Biden for her really going to help his ticket?

More to the point, I just don't think she wants to stand behind Obama being a "cheerleader" during his campaign or for the four years afterwards.

213 I see what other's see as a minus for Perry as a plus, that he's a politician.  He has made a few bone-head calls, IMO, but he backs off when his constituents demand it.  The tide is setting conservative for the next decade and Perry will ride that and stay bought.

The guy endorsed Giuliani in '08.  As others mentioned, he was originally a Democrat and was the chairman for Al Gore's campaign in Texas in '88.

Now, in the big scheme of things, that really doesn't bother me that much.  Being a Democrat in Texas didn't signify a lot about your politics, even as late as the 80s and, people forget this, but there was a time when Al Gore was a lot more conservative than he is now.  In fact, there was a time when he was pro-life (I don't remember if he still was by '8 .  I do not think Perry is some sort of closet lib.  I'm sure his inclinations are conservative.  What makes me wary is that's all I'm sure of.  Bush was an ideologue when it came to social issues.  It wasn't just just politics, he could speak deeply and in a heart-felt manner about it.  Perry...again, I'm sure his inclinations are conservative, but everybody's talking like he's an ideologue.  I just think there's a lot of room for skepticism there.

Hilary Clinton is already part of the Obama administration, and a vote for him is already a vote for her.

Is moving her to the VP slot really going to be a "game changer"?  Specifically, who is going to vote for Obama specifically because she is on the ticket that wouldn't have otherwise voted for him?

He didn't pick her as VP last time, and I know there was quite a bit of bad blood between the Clinton camp and his.  Its not clear that he'd be willing to ask her, and I'd say its an open question whether she'd even agree to be his VP if asked.

Its also mandatory in EVERY State but Alabama, Montana, and South Dakota, and has been in most states for many years.

I know this is not what you all want to hear, because like most conservatives, you are all optimists.  But trust me, Perry will let you down.  The only thing he has going for him is the right ideology, which makes him a universe better than Obama, but some bad decisions and lack of depth make him a less desirable nominee.

286  I often push the "Democrat party has moved left" meme, because it helps convince party loyalists to switch sides without feeling like they were wrong their entire life. It's easier to push people to think they've been betrayed. In all honesty, though, FDR was a bigger socialist than Obama.

FDR loved his country, and was willing to fight. I grant him that. And big spending to fix a depression was a novel concept, and may have been worth a try. But in terms of long lasting deficits, most of our problems are the fault of FDR and LBJ.

 And maybe Carter...

The other thing I want to see from a candidate is a plan for structural impediments to be put in place to prevent the government from doing nearly everything it has done over the past couple of years.  The courts have to be reined in so that we can return to some sort of rational reading of the Constitution for one thing.

Then move to France.

Not incidentally, here is a recent study from France  debunking one of the bigger claims about Hep B vaccine. They attribute almost all adverse effects to one particular brand of vaccine.

But more to the point, the question isn't about Hep B vaccines, its about Perry.

The fact is, Hepatitis B vaccination became mandatory in Texas in 1998.  That was when George Bush (not Perry) was Governor.   Blaming Perry for this makes ZERO sense. .. he had nothing to do with it.

Further, and also going against your thesis, Texas isn't some weird outlier here.  Hepatitis B vaccination is mandatory in 47/50 states right now.  Texas wasn't an early adopter, nor is it some sort of outlier.

351 There is nothing wrong with the concept of Unionism in my book, but like most things, too much money and power was put in too few hands. Before unions children as young as 10 were chained to machines for 12 hours a day so lets get real here. Man destroys even the purest of pursuits. Workers need a voice. Unions have no one to blame but themselves for not doing their due diligence and letting it rot from the inside,

354 No hiding. You are on the wrong site and need to be on your way.  I was forced into a union and they didn't do a damn thing for me other than take my money. Then they used it to ensure election of liberal Democrats, so I don't particularly like unions but love each and every worker because they pay for stuff and they don't sit around waiting for government handouts.

368 Gonzo actually seems to be an Independent that cares about issues, that IS rare. Most Indies just claim the name to avoid being hated by partisans, or because it sounds better than "No Clue".

But seriously, not all partisans are corrupt party hacks. I agree with some liberals about the threat of corporatism, but the solution is Government taking a SMALLER role in the marketplace. Liberalism sounds like a remedy, but it's the cause. When Government controls the marketplace, larger companies have a much larger say in legislation and therefore influence legislation that destroys up and coming competition.

Some conservatives get so tired of anti-business socialist rhetoric, that they defend all companies. This isn't necessary. Some businesses should fail. But that failure should be a result of being beaten in a fair marketplace, not because Government regulates them out of existence.

OK, let's get "real".
Historically, unions wanted to ban child labor not for altruistic reasons, but simply to protect dues-paying union jobs.
Meanwhile, child labor has been restricted by Federal law in this country for over 70 years.
So would you care to explain why we still need unions to prevent this from coming back?    Other than the voices in your head, who is asking to stick kids back in factories nowadays?

422 Ever wonder why we no longer have manufacturing jobs here in the US?  Could it be the high cost of doing business in the US?  Let's take a quick peek, highest corporate tax in the world to ensure those bastard pay for giving us jobs.  Then there is the high cost of labor where a union shop cost is twice as high as a non-union shop.  Then there is constantly changing regulation and the law suits, which means lots and lots of lawyers, which is kind of funny since Congress is full of them.  Now we get the wonderful addition of socialized medicine, which is only driving up the cost, vice tort reform and national markets.  The unions don't seem to be doing anything for the workers except fleecing them until their jobs are gone.

425 274 There is a difference in creating jobs and supporting big business over and at the expense of workers. We all want and need decent paying jobs.Businesses need to make profits and should. The caveat here is that Perry will never support the worker, he always sides with business, always. Target employees told the union to get lost. Yes, let's support the union over the employer. Perry sides with business who create jobs for the employee. Much better than a union who supposedly supports the "worker" - when in reality they are always protecting the union bosses at the expense of the employer.

436 >>>I didn't say we would be chaining 5 year old's to machines, which we don't have anymore because we don't manufacture anything in this country.

For someone so self- "educated" you're missing quite a bit here.

Not only does the US manufacture "things", the US happens to be the largest manufacturer in the world, putting out around 20% of the worlds total manufacturing output, and still even surpassing China by a considerable amount.  We completely dominate in aircraft, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, etc.

In fact, as a percentage of the economy, manufacturing is the same today as it was 30 years ago, and contrary to popular belief, its actually growing overall.  It just involves fewer jobs because its more automated than it used to be.  In other words, we're putting out the same amount or more value of goods, just with far fewer people (who happen to be higher skilled).

Domestic manufacturing, is also one of the few areas showing some recent strength.

Now I don't now how weakness in the dollar and our overall economic situation has affected the relative ratios of dollar output over the last year, but again, this idea that the USA isn't manufacturing anything is bunk.

In terms of dollar value, and as a percentage of the economy we're still building plenty of high-tech stuff, and that's not slacking off at all.

We just seen a loss in manufacturing jobs, since low-skilled (read "low paying") labor has either been replaced with automation, or has moved overseas.

I don't have them confused at all.

Its self-educated Nurse Gonzo who thinks Perry mandated Hep B vaccination for TX kids, when in fact that was in place before he took office.

On HPV,  the actual merits of that vaccine are debatable, and I'm not going to get into that here.  But politically, its a non-issue too. Perry issued an order for vaccination, but let the TX legislature overrule him.

So he's hardly been dogmatic there, and you can't argue that any kid in TX was vaccinated because of him.

503 We were winning until McCain fucked up as usual and suspended his campaign and made a bigger useless asshole of himself than usual.

Come on, for the period of six months prior to the election we were winning for a week or two after the convention and that was before Lehman Brothers went bankrupt and the stock market crash got into full swing.

Here are the poll numbers from 08:

Link

Before then?  There's a sea of blue.  After that time?  There's a sea of blue.  After April, only a cluster of about a week or two after the convention and the random poll here and there had him ahead.  It was Obama's to lose.

Suspending his campaign was stupid, but you can't blame the election loss on that when, at the same time, you have the stock market collapsing and unemployment heading up (and when the Dems had attacked Bush for his entire second term without his administration giving much of a counter-argument).

More like put your argument in cement boots and rolled it off the fantail.

So, we should pay everyone a lot more than $7.25 and hour?  Good, because they will need to make a lot more to buy anything nice under the protectionist scheme your arguments require, since it is not like the rest of world will impose matching minimum wage requirements on their manufacturers.

You're welcome back at the big boy table when you've mastered elementary economics.  (I'm not holding my breath).

To give you something to think about, since its impossible for the 150 million Chinese laborers who get paid roughly $1/hour (the actual rate) to live, what do you think would happen if all of a sudden by law, they were required to be paid $7.25/hour?

Since you're quite obviously slow, I'll give you a few choices:

a. They all become seven times as rich.
b. They all lose their jobs, when the $1/hour jobs are eliminated or move to some OTHER third world country where people are glad to have them.
c. Ron Paul.

Well, upon further review of "the damned lie"  I discovered this:

Whose Plane?

McCain has said for years that the missile struck his own plane, and this has been widely accepted. But official documents don't support that. We now judge it more likely that the missile first struck a plane next to McCain's and that his own memory of the event has changed in the years since.

In his 1999 book "Faith of My Fathers," McCain writes:

McCain, 1999 (p. 177): I took my helmet back Â… and shut the planeÂ’s canopy. In the next instant, a Zuni missile struck the belly fuel tank of my plane, tearing it open, igniting two hundred gallons of fuel that spilled onto the deck, and knocking two of my bombs to the deck.

Author Gregory A. Freeman, in his 2002 book about the disaster, "Sailors to the End," accepts that it was McCainÂ’s plane that was hit:

Freeman, 2002 (pp 104-105): McCain felt a huge impact as the Zuni rocket tore through his plane on the right side and exited on the left side, ripping open his fuel tank with four hundred gallons of JP5 jet fuel.

The more recent account by James Caiella, however, comes to a different conclusion. Writing in 2003, Caiella points out, correctly, that the official Navy investigation into the disaster – the Manual of the Judge Advocate General Basic Final Investigative Report Concerning the Fire on Board the USS Forrestal (CVA-59) – concluded that the missile struck plane number 405, the A-4 piloted by Lt. Cdr. Fred White, who was among those killed in the incident. McCainÂ’s plane was number 416, and was next to WhiteÂ’s, one plane forward toward the shipÂ’s bow. Caiella has kindly provided us with official Navy summaries of the investigation documenting this finding. He has also allowed us to reproduce here a portion of a drawing he created, based on the Navy report, to illustrate his article. It shows the positions of the aircraft on deck at the time the fire beg.

McCain's aircraft was 416 and could not have fired the rocket.  So I humbly retract my accusation.  Still think he was never qualified to be president.

Oh, I agree entirely that he f'ked up by going hard after Obama.  In fact, I'd go further.  He actually did go hard against him in the first debate--his problem was by that point he'd already screwed the pooch by not attacking until then.  When he decided to lighten up in the second debate...forget it, the campaign was already dead, buried, capped with a tombstone, and growing with weeds.

I just don't see how someone can look at a years worth of those poll numbers where, maybe, he's ahead in a fifth of them and consistently ahead for even less of it and conclude that we were fine until he f'ked it up.  Just look at the poll numbers.  He was consistently ahead back at the end of January and for a brief period after that convention and that was it (and, whether he deserved it or not, he had higher numbers against Obama than other Republicans did).

Add to this that the incumbent President from the same party as him had a job approval rating in the 30s (yes, Bush didn't deserve that, but look at the Rasmussen polls--he had people going to the ballot box to vote Republican in November when the Republican President had an approval rating of 35%--it's amazing, given that, that we weren't just massacred).  It sucks, but it would have taken an act of God to get around that fact.

Actually, I left out the inflation option on purpose, since that's WAY over the head of Nurse Gonzidiot.

In my hypothetical example, where the Chinese workers were being paid in actual dollars, it probably wouldn't be a linear 7:1 type of dilution.   If they were suddenly paid in 7x as much paper Yuan, yeah, all the "raise" would instantly be diluted away, and they'd end up right where they were when they started.

Left out of this discussion is the fact that $1/hour in China provides roughly $3/hour parity purchasing power in China, because most goods and services are proportionately cheaper there.

547 On McCain, this is sort of kicking a dead horse already.  He's lost, he's out, he's not running again, and I don't see his endorsement or lack thereof being a big factor this election cycle.

I don't think there is any question that he was a bad candidate, and that it hurt him.   It wasn't just that he alienated a large part of the Republican base, but that he was fairly lackluster overall in terms of message and in terms of challenging Obama.

The question is, could any OTHER Republican candidate have won at that point?

That is, after Bush took 8 years of continuous slagging in the press and never defended himself or his policies, and after the economy and market tanked really badly right prior to elections.  Its also after a compliant press literally canonized Obama and point blank refused to do basic vetting of his background (Rezko, Wright, etc).

They might have done better at the polls (or not), but I'm skeptical that Romney, Giuliani, or Huckabee could have pulled it out at that point.

If you're telling the truth, that means you live in household with a combined income of $200,000 or more, making you nearly qualified to be one of Obama's "rich Americans".

Unfortunately, President Obama also earns over $200k per year, and its pretty clear that he doesn't know jack shit about economics either.  So I'm afraid your knowledge-by-income argument doesn't hold water.

Care to demonstrate your mastery of economics with an answer to my question?

Cue some idiot to say Texas was still mostly Democrat in 1988 and that the dems were conservative. Cue another idiot to say Reagan was once a democrat. Not in 1988 he wasn't. Only idiots were democrats in 1988. Texas is/was a great place for business in spite of/prior to Rick Perry. He hasn't done anything to make it easier. He just hasn't fucked up as much as the idiot dems would have. Rick Perry has never worked in the private sector unless you count 4 years on his daddy's farm, probably drawing huge subsidy checks. Can't we do better than him?

Posted by: lan sing at June 19, 2011 07:37 AM (YHrQZ)

645 I'm not saying I'm a support of Perry but using the fact that he was a Democrat in 1988 to bludgeon him as an unreliable conservative Republican presidential candidate in 2012 is probably not fair. After all, Reagan ran for President as a Republican for the first time in 1976, which was 14 years after he switched from being a Democrat to a Republican (i.e., 1962), while Rick Perry would be running for President as a Republican for the first time in 2012, which would be 23 years after he switched from being a Democrat to a Republican (i.e., 1989). Perry also became Texas Governor as a Republican in 2000, which was 11 years after his party switch, while Reagan became California Governor as a Republican in 1966, only 4 years after his party switch. I know there are a lot of factors that makes each situation different but this does provide a little context for why no Republicans/Conservatives should automatically disqualify Perry as a GOP presidential candidate in 2012.
