— DrewM Following his brain cramp, Rick Perry went on just about every TV show he could find.
Here he is doing the Top 10 on Letterman.
I'm not a big fan of presidential candidates trying to be pop culture stars but it's the world we live in. Coming of the most painful 51 seconds in presidential debate history, this is about the best he could do.
Before I realized Ace wasn't going to be around yesterday, I did a Perry post on my own little blog about how Perry's "Look at what I did" strategy might help him.
Here's part of what I wrote.
...People are quickly going from laughing at him (which is fatal) to laughing with him (which can be powerful). It also helps that at some pint in a venue large or small, weÂ’ve all been there. ItÂ’s an endearing and humanizing moment that basically means a chance for Perry to make a first impression for the second time. What Perry does with the second chance in the coming days will likely be the difference between an early demise for his campaign or a another legitimate shot at the nomination.
I don’t know if the stiff and lifeless Perry we’ve seen at the debates is the “real” Perry or if the looser, quirkier one we are seeing now (and in the famous NH speech) is closer to the truth. If it’s the latter I hope he just lets that fly and sees where it takes him. Personally I’ve gotten the sense from Perry that he’s so uptight, so worried about saying the wrong thing he’s basically gone flat (maybe his apparent lack of preparation for this run was the cause of his caution). That was not the concern I had about him when he launched his bid. I thought his supposedly outsized personality would be too hot, to “Texas” for many voters. Well, cautious Rick Perry was struggling to hang on to the tail end of the 2nd tier at about 6% support before last night. If you’re going to go down, go down with your best pitch Rick. Throw it all out on the table and see if it works.
Can Perry capitalize on the opportunity? Well the window is small. There's another debate tomorrow that will focus exclusively on foreign affairs. Another brain cramp or even one of his typical extended periods where he just checks out and he's done.

He should begin to open carry at the debates. I think that would really help him in the Republican primary.
If he's going to go down, he might as well go down in style.

>>>don't get it why go on Letterman I mean he is irrelevant. You raise Letterman's credibility then he makes you look like a doofus. Fail.
There are still a lot of people who don't have cable and therefore watch Letterman and Leno. It's the reason that many nightly news programs still get 20 million viewers(between the big three networks).
There was a three year period where I only had an antenna. I ended up watching a lot of Leno and those PBS shows where they go to European cities and let your live vicariously through their travels.

Perry did well on every single TV show he appeared on. His campaign should switch over to that formula. It will help him stay relevant and it will help him stay loose. I think the more he speaks on tv and publically, the more comfortable he will be in debates.

But we also need somebody who can sell conservatism. It isn't enough, in this day and age, simply to implement good policies, you have to make a convincing case. Perry seems able to do that in a prepared speech, but there are times when you have to be spontaneous as well.
I do think he's overcoached and now he has nothing to lose. Time to let loose.
Another thing, if Perry happens to get the nomination, this will serve him well. This is a much better meme than the one the media was searching for and would have settled on after "racist rock". Good natured, bumbling goofball is the better of the two liberal memes for conservative politicians.

I don't think this will hurt him much. Realistically, he can only move up in the polls. And I agree with the great and wonderful Oz at #1, he's the only one who shares my values.
And, off to take B'Gal to get some bloodwork drawn and then to breakfast. Bacon will be consumed. Catch y'all on the Romney...

Salon has already pointed this out, but it's worth bringing up here: Bill Clinton saved his career many years ago by appearing on David Letterman's show the day after the 1988 Democratic Convention, when Clinton delivered one of the longest and dullest speeches ever made by an American politician. Considered an up-and-comer at the time, Clinton's sheer coma-inducing, eye-glazing disaster of a speech had people writing him off but Clinton--like Perry--is a personable, charming guy. Clinton chatted up Letterman, played saxophone with Paul and the band, and--before the night was out--completely won over the audience.
It's a cliche, really, but no less true: if Perry stays true to who and what he is, he'll start moving up again in the polls. The guy excels at retail politicking in a way few of his opponents can match, for one thing. Perry also needs to buy some national air time and give a speech that shows he can effectively communicate the conservative message. If he can persuade voters these debates are one-offs and give a bigger picture view of his stengths, Perry still has a shot.

If people wise up, and stop confusing the presidency with an American Idol winner, we might wind up with someone who will actually do the country some good, not just serve as a place-holder for the next compromise candidate.
In short, screw The Mutt with a bark-covered log. This "Mutt is inevitable" shit has got to stop.

But people won't see those -- and it's not their responsibility to seek that information out. It's on him to do that and the burden is on him to make sure he can clearly convey the voice of conservatism.

I fractured my spine and was in rehab with traction for years... I get how excruciating psychically and mentally exhausting it can be. When the pain just throbs constantly the effect on the brain can be like having an alarm clock going off next to your ear for hours at a time. Its annoying at first but then it just wears you down to wear you are too tired to care about anything but getting the pain to stop.
Anyway, if backpain is the issue get the guy a barstool! Maybe to some people it would look like a weakness (hard to imagine worse then how it looks now) And their would probably be a net positive anyway because sooo many Americans suffer from something like it.

WSJ has a good article on Romney. It pinpoints the year when he became a conservative of convenience. That year is 2005.
Prior to that he had been a liberal of convenience. I don't even really know what Romney believes, if he believes anything. He doesn't appear to be very religious, he's taken both sides on every social issue, and both sides on almost every major domestic issue whether it be education of climate change.

Except Coulter. Who at first was sure this was due to racism. But now that Cain has changed who to blame (again, for the 3rd, 4th, 5th time), she has fallen right into line and is now blaming Axelrod.
Posted by: jimmuy at November 11, 2011 06:33 AM (pXUfx)
The issue with Perry is the issue with most politicians.
And that despite coming from Texas, where the historical political culture and its present laws prevent inordinate state meddling, Perry has no real clue whyh is state is doing better than others. IOW, absent a popularized version of Hayek on the stage, Conservatism is unlikely to find its perfect champion. Cain seems almost willfully unprepared and Sowell is too old to run.
Reagan came the closest, and Newt could do it absent his personal issues, but even Reagan agreed to a 3-to-1 spending vs. taxes agreement with Congress where the spending reductions never materialized.
So we are left, I think, with a business technocrat in Romney who at least has the experience in both private and public forums to slow spending and generate fundamental discussions on federal over reach that are acceptable to current populist opinion.
Conservatives must acknowledge that the public in general does not share the opinion that we are in crisis mode yet, which requires immediate abandonment of whole swaths of government departments. That may come later as federal contraction yields no adverse effects, but right now Romney is acceptable because he is positioning himself as the moderate or populist answer. In many ways, he is right. To be elected, you must be the right leader at the right time.

This is an asinine statement. Have you ever listened to Perry apart from the debates? Apparently not, as he is neither an embarrassment or a "democretin where he belongs." Aside from Bachmann, he's about the most conservative candidate running. And he has my vote.

In Texas, they called it the “Father’s Day Massacre.”
In June 2001, fresh off his first legislative session as governor, Rick Perry vetoed 79 bills on the last day of his veto period — the time in which a governor can sign bills, veto them, or allow them to become law without his signature. Added to the three bills he had vetoed prior, Perry’s annihilation shattered the record for a Texas governor. (Perry easily knocked off Republican Bill Clements, who had axed 59 bills in 1989, from his first-place perch.) It was also a marked change from George W. Bush’s governing style: Bush had never vetoed more than 37 bills in a year.

I am also confused by the general reaction to current Republican candidates.
Even Reagan, who was a fantastic speaker and naturally adopted an effective emotional and psychological stance, barely won over Jimmy Carter, who had done almost everything wrong to further tank a terrible economy.
For anyone not following closely back then, Reagan was characterized as a stupid buffoon, and that message was amplified around the world in every international media summary, passed on to relatives and friends through dinner conversations and phone calls to American voters who didn't watch the news.
The outcome of the 2012 election is anything but sure. The press and the world in general wants big government according to the Marxian meme, (how strange was it that Clinton said, "the days of big government are over") unless it is their side that is 'exploring some new intellectual nuance.' They are still bound and determined to get it.

I grew up in a straight-ticket Democrat household. All my people were blue collar, pro-union folks. My grandfather, a lifelong Chrysler worker and UAW member, was buried with an FDR campaign button pinned to his lapel. He hated Nixon and Rockefeller with an undying, New Dealer passion.
So yeah, I was a Democrat, but two things happened: (1) my views changed over time; and (2) the traditional Democratic Party, the freedom-loving, communist-hating party of Truman and JFK, was suborned by its Leftmost fringe elements. Reagan once remarked, 'I didn't leave the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party left me.' I can relate.
We are not born with party affiliation branded to our foreheads. To denigrate Perry because he was once a Democrat argues two things at once: people don't change and political parties don't change. Both premises are untrue, and the conclusion--Perry isn't somehow a real Republican--is false.

Though, one might point out the enormously hugely gigantic effect the 2001 law has had on illegal alien enrollment in Texas colleges and universities.

"During the fall (2009 - CdM edit) semester, 12,138 students - about 1 percent of all Texas college students - benefited from the state law granting in-state tuition, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Most of the immigrants among those students are illegal, and some others are not legal permanent residents or U.S. citizens."
"Texas awarded about $33.6 million in state and institutional financial aid to those students between fall 2004 and summer 2008."
"Since 2001, 22,697 students who benefited from the law have attended Texas colleges and universities. State officials were not able to provide data on how many graduated."
"During the 2009 fall semester, 8,406 such students were enrolled at community and technical schools and 3,725 at public universities. Seven were enrolled at health-related institutes."

Much later, deep in the fat-encased layers of de Monet's primitive brain, a long dormant synapse fires to life ...
Hey! Wait a minute. 12,138 is about 1 percent of 1,213,800. What a math-dumbass idjit is that de Monet guy. [sheepishly nods head] Well, good thing it's near the bottom of a now dead post. No one will ever see it.

I like Perry but can't vote for him. The ads against Perry during a general election would be fair but brutal: The scene is the WH, the NSA Director and Sec'y of Defense meets with President Perry. Mr. President, Iran is launching an attack on Israel, what should we do. Shot to Perry (Ten Second Brain Freeze Footage follows). Our defense and the defense of our allies are too important to leave to chance. We need a President who functions fully at all times.
BHO for President.
The issues to which this clip could be attached are endless and if Perry came out with twenty percent in the General Election after the battering he would take, that would be a miracle.
Also the brain freeze ad would support dems' "it's just luck" argument, that it was not Perry's policies that helped Texas, it was just circumstances beyond him. The ad would go, Texas is doing great, DESPITE, Rick Perry, not because of him. Can anyone doubt that (then ad goes to brain freeze footage.)

Counter clip:
"When the opportunity to take down a mortal threat arose, Obama slept on it, played golf, and took 18 hours to make a decision."
"Perry smoothly drew his Ruger .380, took aim, and ventilated the coyote's hide.
"Decisive and appropriate action-taking is what America needs in a President.
"Rick Perry, a sure shooter for 2012."

You didn't beat the shit out of anything. You also conveniently ignored the numerous articles I gave you from left wing sites like NRO, the WSJ and the Washington Examiner which said the exact same things.

NRO, the WSJ and the Washington Examiner are left-wing sites? Really? Wow. Who knew?
Hey, so how's it going, JackStraw? Still an Internet Tough Guy? Just out of curiosity, are you the same JackStraw who cyberstalked Ann Althouse a few years back? You were a sock farmer then, too, I understand, calling yourself J. Polk and Sigmund and a few other names. Do you still talk to your socks online to make it seem like your comments generate interest, like you did on her blog? Are you doing it now? By the way, did badgering a woman like Ann online make you feel manly and strong? Just wondering.

No, JackStraw, I was just politely asking if you were the same guy. I didn't actually say you were. Just seemed to me you had so much in common with that other JackStraw, the twisted fuck sharing your username who likes trolling female bloggers.
And I'm sure everyone who knows you IRL has no idea what you do in the privacy of your home. Or would want to know.

Rational much? You're babbling now. To clarify:
No, I didn't call you a cyberstalker. Again, I merely pointed out that a guy sharing your username (same one-word spelling, first and second-word capitalization) cyberstalked Ann Althouse some years ago. She deleted his posts on her blog but she and her readers talked about that particular 'JackStraw' at length. Look it up yourself. Nothing ever disappears on the Interwebz.
Yes, I did and do think you are cowardly. Anonymously threatening people is inherently cowardly.

JackStraw, I didn't just get here. I've been frequenting AoS for several years now. However, unlike you, I can also differentiate fantasy from reality and know I can't protect anyone from harm while sitting in front of my keyboard any more than you can physically hurt them from yours.
I'm sorry you lost family on 9-11. That's a terrible thing. However, if someone calls you a Truther, more likely than not they wouldn't know about your family history. If they did know, then they're trolling you, hoping for a reaction. That you gave them the reaction they wanted says you're fairly easy prey and therefore shouldn't play online. Get out in the real world more often, where things actually matter. Have real conversations with real people.
Lastly, anonymously threatening to punch people out online is ridiculous. The odds of you driving or flying from, say, Washington state to my home state of Indiana are very small, I would think. And if you or another Internet stranger with bad intent did show up at my door, don't expect Marquis de Queensbury rules. Expect, among other things, a police presence and an all-around bad day.
Grow the hell up.

Now were getting a real, substantial, intellectual debate. If Romney is nominated, you should vote for that fine christian Barrack Hussein Obama.

Lot's of people point to Reagan, but he became a Republican when it was actually unpopular to do so. Perry became a Republican in 1989 for fucks sake, after eight years of Reagan had come and gone."
Perry was a Democrat until the pro-life Democrat for President lost overwhelmingly to Michael Dukakis and Jesse Jackson, prompting that pro-life Democrat to become a bad imitation of Michael Moore. If that isn't a good excuse for Perry to fix his label to reflect his lifelong convictions, I'm not sure what would be. Please advise.
