Rick Perry's Announcement Speech
— Ace

The line was sweatier than Cool Hand Luke, about 250 people waiting for 45 minutes (or more).

Pictures coming (I'm right in front of the podium). Live blogging:

Talks about his upbringing in Paint Creek, and the values he learned -- "hard work and thrift."

"Socialist systems" try to order people in society -- but Americans do not "like to be told their place."

"That's why we reject this president's unbridled fixation" on taking money from citizens, punishing success, increasing dependency on government.

"one in six work-eligible americans cannot find a job, that is not a recovery, that is an economic disaster"

"This president and his big-spending policies have prolonged our national misery, not alleviated it."

"How can the wealthiest nation in history fail so miserably to pay its bills? Well Mr. President you cannot win the future by selling it to foreign creditors."

"This is only the latest downgrade... for three years he has been downgrading employment, downgrading our financial situation, downgrading our confidence, and downgrading our hopes for a better future."

"This president wishes to dictate the borders of our friend, Israel, while being an abject failure in defending the border of the united states."

"It's time to get America workin' again." Minor quote, but I suspect this is to be a theme of his campaign. Best way to do this is to "give a pinkslip to the current occupant of the White House."

Talks about making tough decisions in cutting spending to balance Texas' budget -- "It can, and it must, be done in Washington DC."

Several principles for how to do this: "One, you don't spend all the money!"
Also tort reform, regulation reform.

notes he just got "loser pays" tort reform.

"I know America is not broken, Washington DC is broken!" Another campaign theme. Mentions "generational theft." Will not accept "the path that America is on." "A renewed nation needs a new president."

"It is time to get America working again, and that is why.... I declare to you today as a candidate for presdident of the uS"

We cannot except the exchange of "less freedom for more government."

"The people are not subject to the government, the government is subject to us."

Talks about what is needed to "get American workin' again."

"I will work every day to make sure that Washington DC is as inconsequential to your lives as possible."

Just said goodbye and posed briefly with his family, which is pretty cute.

Overall impressions: 1, he's a good speech giver.

2, a point I didn't touch on because I was trying to get quotes, he condemned Obama for being too cowardly to suggest any entitlement reforms. He did not specify his own.

3, I think he might be softening his Texas accent, aware of the comparisons to Bush. While he clearly had a Texas accent, 1, he didn't sound much like Bush, and 2, it sounded subtle.

I heard that he was a good speaker, could charge the room, channel emotion, speak clearly in appealing themes. This is the first time I've actually seen in him action. Early reports were accurate; he's very good on the stump.

""I will work every day to make Washington, D.C. as inconsequential in your lives as I can.""

Sounds good to me. He's got my vote. I like him more than Romneyy, who I'm afraid will wilt under the onslaught of race-baiting, and all sorts of other nonsensical chicagostyle attacks. Even as a dem from the 80s, he seems more conservative than Romney was.

You know, I have a very very vocal critic of the whole mandatory vaccination thing at the time it happened.  I am spectacularly suspicious by how I've seen it all over twitter (I had to fucking shut down tweetdeck I was so sick of seeing stuff about it) and now all over various blogs.  Please to be less obvious with the astroturfing.

12 oh, and DNC trolls, try that "oh no another TX candidate" line of attack, it will not work! Heck, at this point, even though I didn't vote for Bush either time, I would take GWB over President "I won" in a second!

I'll bet our military would be much more comfortable with a CIC who actually has weapons and knows how to use them.

As opposed to a clusterfuck of a human being who... you know what, I don't have the words. The mere thought of him pisses me off too much.

He just cut Romney's legs out from under him.  Mitt's been equivocating on the role of government.  Perry just said it's too "in your face".

That resonates right now.  Powerfully.

Posted by: Dave in Texas at August 13, 2011 09:28 AM (PjVdx)

19 Palin really ought to just climb aboard.  We don't need her needling this thing.

Perry is far more electable than she is.

21 Perry is saying ALL the magic words!

Posted by: rdbrewer at August 13, 2011 09:28 AM (Wz2dV)

22 First time I have seen him speak. Started out seeming a bit like a guy on SNL playing a guy. I thought the SEAL part, even if completely heartfelt, seemed a little out-of-place in a purely political speech. He zinged the prez on securing the borders, but I thought that was Perry's one soft spot? As the speech went on I liked it and him more.

Posted by: DM! at August 13, 2011 09:28 AM (O0Qwy)

23

I'm hoping he's going to vault to the top of the list, past Mitt and all the rest. Now, maybe SarahCuda will stay out of the race and endorse Perry. She could draw a lot of the media fire away from him, which I think she knows.

BTW, Ace, did you bring any pudding with you as a gift? That would require an explanation, of course, over a 55-gallon drum of Valu-Rite with two straws in it...

remember to seek medical attention if your political boner lasts longer than 4 hours.

I've only had two concerns about Perry.  The first is the rest of the nation's general reaction to a President from Texas.  The second is his ability to raise money.

His political skills, and straightforward speaking, I've seen those.  Never worried about them.  His "baggage", feh.

94 Look at the right sidebar story rdbrewer posted. Obama is unscrupulous.

If you're talking about him comparing himself to MLK, this will hurt him a lot more than it helps.  It makes him sound like just another "I'm a victim, whiny race hustler", which is, of course, what he is.  Homie don't play that.

103 Perry's already shown more willingness to go after his opponent IN ONE SPEECH than McLame did his entire campaign.

No, you're certainly right.

But he ran one of the worst campaigns I've ever seen. Even the higher ups at the top were frustrated. We had a shit ton of voting irregularities going into this in Ohio (of course). And they (the top of the top) didn't want to hammer any of it out. Apparently it was impolite to question why you'd have more registrations in a county where there were actually people qualified to vote.  We were all working against The Indonesian (shout-out to progressoverpeace!) at that point.

141 I only caught the last minute or so. Pretty good.

He may have gone too far in making his hairdo look presidential. It's slightly too short for the shape of his head now, so it's just kinda sitting on top of him like a cracked pancake, and he looks older and less "Yeah I have a boat; wanna get fucked on it?" than he usually does. Net gain, probably. That's depressing.

How tall is he? He's listed at 6'1", but is that, like, NBA height? If he's shorter than Obama, his being more man-shaped will be a visual disadvantage in TV debates. People hate a little man-shaped guy. If he's taller, or he grows his boat-hair back, and there's some war shit going down during debate season, he'll look more like, y'know, The Guy.

...Does he always do the meth-jaw thing during long pauses? I never saw him talk for more than a couple sentences until now. First decent Rick/meth/Perry pun gets to be his name in 900,000 Kos comments. Crank Perry? The Texas Grinder? Does InTrade have a line on this yet?

...Those are his kids, I guess? I shut the sound off when he was done. If his son's not gay, the media's gonna lay a bunch of LOOK AT HIS GAY-ASS SON on him. And having not-ugly daughters with shiny hair will cost him some of the ladies' vote, if that's who those MTV-studio-audience-lookin' girls are.

Meh.

I'll add, cause I'm like here and shit, Rick Perry is not the reincarnation of Ronald Reagan.  Reagan was on the national scene for many years before his eventual electoral success, including a failed run in 1976 against Ford.

Perry does not have those chops.

He does have a dozen years of dealing with DC as the governor of a large and growing state, he has keen political instincts, he's right on most of what conservatives care about, and he also knows how to use a shiv, and where his opponent's major arteries are.

Yes, but Rick Perry illustrates why it's much better to have governors as Presidents than Congresscriters - they've already have executive experience and they can point to the economic performance of their state during their tenure as proof of their effectiveness.

And Texas is actually better experience for the POTUS gig than most other states because Texas borders another country, thus Texas has to deal with more international trade and border issues (and so on and so forth), just like POTUS has to consider.

Rick Perry/Susana Martinez.

40 state sweep.

There you go rdbrewer. He keeps up this tone, this aggression, and gets a strong GOTV, they win 40 states.

States they won't get: California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Delaware, New York. Oh and DC.

389-149 electoral college smackdown.

They take everything else, from Oregon to New Jersey, Maine to Washington, Minnesota to Pennsylvania.

284 There was a magic combination of things that propelled Obarky to the White House - a sorry opponent - a national crisis (an economic fire set by Soros - Saudis and fellow travelers - so that fireman Barry could save the day) - nobody knew the negatives on Barry (outside of the people like us who were paying attention) a dynamic young voice speaking of Hope and Change (this plays well to a lot of people whose lives are hopeless and pray for change).

None of that magic combination is going to be available to President Downgrade in 2012. Are the Demonrats going to double down on their Jihad to destroy the US? Of course they will - will the Media be all in favor of Obamao - of course they will - and none of that will make a difference. If the Dhimms think they got their asses kicked in 2010 they will find out in 2012 what happens when you don't pay any attention to the electorate in two straight elections. The people told Teh Won "No!" in a loud clear voice in 2010, and he hasn't listened at all. In fact he has been lecturing the electorate ever since. That is the real issue of the 2012 election - things are not going to play well for him or his party next election.

I think so. I don't want to make it too obvious, but these two blokes, let's call them Deagan and Mush, on opposite ends of the party, came to an agreement and Deagan made Mush his VP, after which he endorced Mush for his own Presidential run 8 years later where he won handily in part thanks to the Deagan presidency. It makes the path clearer for Romney and gives him 8 years of additional cred.

I'm as proud of our kid being an Eagle as I am his being a Marine.

Two years ago a young Marine pilot (and Eagle) from here volunteered to go to Afghanistan from Okinawa.  He was killed three weeks after arriving there.  A couple of days before he died, he asked his mom if she could send school supplies for the kids over there.

She set up the Matthew Freeman project, and they supply the Afghan kids with tons of school supplies.  It's how she's stayed sane.

Proud to be an american this morning - a colleague flying back from our Annapolis meetings on a full flight had the pilot come on and ask for a couple seated together to give up their seats for Aaron Vaughn's parents so they could get home (from claiming their son's body) and not only did several couples volunteer but when the Vaughn's got on the plane everyone stood and applauded for like 5 minutes and apparently there were not many dry eyes either. That's a higher unemployment rate than Iowa (6.0%) or Alaska (7.5%).  It's higher than New Hampshire's (4.9%).  Texas has a higher rate of unemployment than Mineesoetah (6.7%)

Texas is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy behind Oklahoma (#5 at 5.3%)\

Then again, as everyone knows, if the senate and congress aren't taken and held firmly the president doesn't have more than enough power to slightly shape what is offered to him. 398 It should be obvious that this man Rick Perry shouldn't run for office. I heard he prays. You know who else prays? The Taliban, that's who. I heard he killed a defenseless dog but he's never killed a terrorist like Obama. He also runs a State where jobs just happen all the time regardless of what the governor does but he's still responsible for these being meaningless sub $250k jobs. I doubt he could even create a federal Administrator for Admin job if he tried. He spent loads of money on windmills and he hasn't made them the huge success they have been everywhere else. Obviously bad management from a man who's bought and paid for by big oil. Finally, last century he failed organic chemistry. How can a man like this run for office? Plus, I bet he's gay...not that there is anything wrong with that. I'm afraid for the Republican party. I urge you to select a solid respectable candidate like Jon Huntsman.

462 Rick Perry is okay, but I really don't understand the fascination with him. Before 2010, was he known as a big free-market / small government guy? I don't think he was. I'd never heard any of my libertarian friends talking about how great he was. Sure, he is saying all the right things now, but does he really believe what he says like Reagan did? I'm skeptical. Between him and Romney - who is more likely to get captured by the Washington Establishment / Media? I don't know the answer to that question, but I want the guy with the better immune system. Now, say all you want about Sarah Palin, but I think there is 0% chance she'd get captured. There's just too much bad blood. Could she get elected? I don't know.

For a glimpse into the rabidness of Aggies:

Texas A&M maintains a cemetery on campus where all of the past Reveilles are buried. Reveilles I through IV were buried side-by-side in a small cemetery in front of Kyle Field with their noses and paws pointed so that they could look through the north tunnel and see the stadium scoreboard. This way, "they can always watch the Aggies outscore their opponent on the field."[23]

In 1997, the university decided to expand Kyle Field and build the Bernard C. Richardson Zone at the north end of the stadium. This necessitated the removal of the cemetery. After meeting with representatives of the Traditions Council, Student Senate, and E-2, the athletic department decided to create a temporary cemetery across the street in Cain Park. Upon completion of the stadium addition in 1999, the graves were relocated to a permanent cemetery at the new, tree-lined Kyle Field Plaza.[23] Due to the recent additions the gravesites' view of Kyle Field were blocked, a miniature scoreboard was constructed on the outside of the stadium so that the mascots can still watch the Aggies outscore their opponents

So the dead dogs can still watch the game. That's Aggieland.

534 Oh yeah, if it's one thing our governor down here is good at is stumping the speeches and rallying the crowd. He's even better at photo-ops, better than Bush. What he excels at too, are debates. Wait for it, it's worth the ticket.

He is a decent American and probably, for better or worse, a true centrist, which will make you want to string him up or kick him in the shins, whichever. Other times he'll come through and you'll be saying it's about damn time. He actually has walked both sides of the isle, which if played right can be used to his advantage. He has put us through a lot of crap down here, but in the end if we scream(ed) at him loud enough he'd end up listening and doing the right thing the majority of the time. Not all the time mind you, but most of it. But remember he didn't do it on his own, we've got a decent assembly which helped him be very effective. Which means this election is about more than just the presidency whether Obama gets re-elected or we take the WH. We need to keep the House and take the Senate. Mainly it means if Perry takes it he's has to have the right backing and you have to watch him like a hawk.

At this point I'll hold my nose and vote for him in the primary, let's face it, the field is weak; and if he wins that, the general election. I have a hard time trusting him, and though it makes no sense he is actually the one RINO I would say okay to. Although, I wouldn't call him a RINO per se, though many will, more like a right-leaning centrist who will frustrate the crap out of you for lack of a better description.
