"After months of hard work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement available to the public before the committeeÂ’s deadline," the two chairmen of the panel, Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), said in a joint statement.Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), the supercommittee member who authored the GOP's deficit-reduction proposal rejected by Democrats on the special panel, said the groupl had "an extraordinary opportunity" to create "millions of jobs through a reformed tax system and put our government on a path to fiscal sanity by cutting spending."
"Unfortunately," he said, "this opportunity has been wasted."
Meh, it was never an opportunity. Obama and Senate Democrats are working off a mandate from the 2008 elections, the House GOP from the 2010 midterms. The American people sent a mixed message (one of the most liberal presidents ever and a tea party inspired House), that you'd get this result was foreseeable and predictable.
Only the American people can sort this out and they will next year.
Now the race is on to pin the blame for the failure of this process and attempts to disarm the automatic cut triggers. Those triggers by the way don't kick in until 2013, so there's plenty of time to deal with that.
The big lesson to take away from this...don't ever trust these kinds of committee. Don't let them pawn things off on others and out of sight where we can beat on them.
Remember when the debt ceiling deal was cut and this committee was born? John Boehner sold the deal saying the deal, "Requires baseline to be current law, effectively making it impossible for Joint Committee to increase taxes." Yeah, the GOP offered hundreds of billions in additional taxes.
At the time, an idiotic blogger pointed out that there was no way Boehner could promise that and taxes were likely very much going to be on the table.

When Reid put the idiot Patty Murray on the supercommittee, I felt like it was an act of bad faith. I mean, this is a guy who will avoid Pelosi or even Obama when necessary to work on issues. Putting Murray on the supercommittee indicated it wasn't a serious undertaking.

Having people like cry baby Boehner in charge just means that we lose slower. So I'll be voting for Nancy Pelosi next year and for Obama too. If getting rid of them RINOs means we're in the minority then I'd rather in the minority. Better to be pure and out of power than to control the government and not be pure. That's not to say that there aren't deductions that should be done away with- I'm sure there are those which were bought and paid for by special interest groups and should be eliminated. Still, any mechanism which causes my tax bill to go up is a tax increase, regardless of the rate.

Zog, I know revenue isn't the problem, I wrote a long piece on it a couple months back on my own blog. But until we get to a point where Tea Party legislation can be rammed through, which requires significant majorities in both houses and an actual fiscal conservative in the White House, I don't see any way to kill the beast. I'm more just voicing frustration that fine, they can take an extra 5% if it means that this nation doesn't die in the next 2-3 generations.

It would be a $3T tax cut. Also, I thought we wanted a simplified tax code without deductions and loopholes. Special interest groups can make the same arguments regarding their particular deductions and I do not see why we should be picking winners and losers by way of the tax code. A flatter, fairer system is the way to go.

The Dems are going to run on taxing the rich (politically popular) and not touching entitlement programs (politically popular). I wish that wasn't the case, but it is.
Republicans are going to run on fiscal crisis (moderately popular) and making reasonable and mature changes to entitlement programs (not terribly popular at best). Voters dislike overspending and debt, but it is not salient like changes to programs are.
The issue advantage is with the Dems. It sucks, but Dems recognize that they have more to gain by leaving the debate right where it is. This is exactly where they want the lines to be drawn in the general election.

Indeed, it is about protecting the welfare state at all costs. But Mediscare is the easiest tactic and the most comprehensive plan RE entitlements in the House budget is premium support for Medicare. Most of their ads have focused on that proposal.

I was just cruising netflix on my ps3, and there's a frontline doc called "$10 Trillion and counting" copyright 2009. Right when Obama took over. Its now $15 Trillion.

Since the triggers do not cut in until 2013, after the 2012 elections, the Republicans have a perfect opportunity to meet the Democrats half way with the explicit understanding that they will re-visit the issue in the lame duck session, just as they did after the election in late 2010. If American voters throw the Democrat bums out as expected, then the Republicans can git 'er done in Nov-Dec 2012. If Obama still objects, they merely have to wait until January 20, 2013!!!
