But a conspiracy nutter suspects the water he drinks and the contents of his billfold of being part of some Grand Unifying Theory of Population Control. And as all the other little side-theories accumulate and fit in together, suspicion turns to certainty and no ambassador from Realityland -regardless of race- can ever reach such a person.

When you go the the store, and buy a few things, then pay using cash, you frequently get change back. What do you do with the money the cashier gives to you?
If you're like the 99%+++, you count it, then put it in your pocket (or billfold or purse). What do you ALMOST NEVER do?
You ALMOST NEVER inspect each coin, each bill, to see if it is "satisfactory". Even the most heavily worn coins are acceptable, and they have the same value, the same purchasing power, as shiny new ones. This is because they are tokens, they represent value. The value is in a vault somewhere, or at least in the knowledge that these tokes are controlled and not as common as nails or gravel.
Replace these tokens with real gold or gold alloy, and real silver or alloy, and things change. A heavily worn coin clearly does not have the same value as a fresh, new one ... some of the gold or silver has rubbed off (or been removed; the serrations on the coin rim helps indicate this, and historically helped prevent such coins from circulating), and the specifid amount of gold or silver is no longer there ... how much is missing? 3%, 5%? 5% will eat your savings account interest, or it will when interest rates rise ...
Then there's the question of melting gold & silver coins, adding lead to increase volume and maintain weight, then re-minting the original coins, plus a few more ...
Roman currency experienced this problem: from about 190AD to 270AD, the coinage was debased ... a coin in 190AD might be 70% silver (already debased from the previous century); by 270AD, bronze with a silver wash.
With no confidence in the currency (the stuff was valuable itself, rather than representing value stored safely in a vault somewhere, but that's another discssion), there were all sorts of economic problems.
