6 I don't know that I can define "the real problem," but I'm pretty sure that most of the things we think of our problem are symptoms of that problem. It's tempting to say it's a perverse desire for control, or power, or daddy issues, or whatever.

There's something about some people that makes or enables them to think they can fix everything with the proper application of power (they can't), and something about a lot of people that makes or enables them to think that someone else can fix everything for them (they can't).

And as an inevitable result, they fail, and we all pay for it. And each time they fail, the system gets more top-heavy and we all end up groaning from supporting it. Eventually, we can no longer afford the delusion.

I think we hit that point several years ago. Maybe a couple of decades.

Getting people to realize that is the hardest part - we can't afford it. Maybe the TEA Party folks understand, Ryan, Palin, a few others. Not enough.

8 If you want ammo against the liberal charge that Reagan only parroted what other people told him, read Reagan, In His Own Hand.  Many of Reagan's public speeches were products of his frequent writings (done in a hotel room, at home, or even his car), which were produced and edited by hand. 

Reagan was very much like Churchill in this regard concerning his writings, among other things.

"A Time for Choosing" is a great speech.  It will endure the test of time, as it already has.  I saw it on TV as a child, and it was not incomprehensible to me then.

The questions raised and anwered then are still timely.  To think that half the country thinks Reagan was a boob (including his son, namesake Ron, Jr.).

The country renewed itself under Reagan in the 80's because there were still people that remembered what was possible and what had been obscured and lost over the previous 20 years..  There are still people like that today, but they are much fewer in number, and the seed corn has, I fear, been eaten.  There is no one on the political stage at this time, that can command the change of direction needed like Reagan did. (Sarah is a nice and  courageous person in many ways, but her list of achievements is...thin. And better than half the country think she is an ignorant snow-billy.)

I think this country has lost its way in a profound manner, and I don't know if we can find our way out of this dark valley we are in. The final consequence of the Gramscian march through the institutions that began over 90 years ago.

This is exactly right.  Obama is not the problem. per se, although I loathe him and everything he claims to stand for.

The problem is the notion in the minds of many that we can have prosperity just by asking for it.  That we "deserve" our way of life because of our American birth right. That making hard choices is "mean and icky", so lets not make any hard choices and just roll with it.

The problem is the same problem that has confronted Man and men since the first man discovered fire, and his friends probably ended up burning him at the stake for it.

The problem is the eternal struggle of the individual against the collective. The struggle of one man (or woman) to live their life as they see fit, regardless of the opinions of the many. The basic belief that one man has intrinsic value, and that no other man has the right to rule him unless he gives his consent by voting, and then even government, getting that consent, has limitations as to their reach and power.

A million academics, politicians and pundits will argue otherwise, and justify all the mini-tyrannies we accept in our everyday lives, "just to get along". But if our future is tyranny and not freedom, why bother?

"Live free or die" is not just a slogan for a license plate.

Don't ever be ashamed of your son's service as a Marine to the United States of America, especially because of Obama.  He serves in the name of every American.  Obama will pass in time, and things will turn again.  But your son should ALWAYS be proud of serving as a Marine.  He should always be proud he has been taught by some real tough hombres how to keep his honor clean. 

I never served, I claim nothing in that way, But a lot of guys I knew (and still know) that were older than I served in Viet Nam, were treated with oblivious contempt at best, and sometimes a lot worse, for a lot of years.  Most are STILL proud they wore this country's uniform when asked (or volunteered).

He was a great man and an outstanding president who understood the American dream and encouraged his fellow citizens to greater things. Another thing that's telling about him is that he didn't take himself too seriously and possessed a wonderful sense of humor.

What the "average voter" fails to look for are the simple traits: honor, patriotism, a sense that a president serves America and not the other way around.

Reagan was admired by conservatives, and still is admired today. Some on the right (including some here) -- I'm not naming names -- have fallen into the trap so loved by the liberals: they worship particular candidates because they see those "average voter" traits. They look no farther, and defend their choices with platitudes and ad hominem attacks on the unconvinced.

I'm not going to worship any damn human, politician or otherwise. A select few, and Reagan was one of them -- perhaps the last among politicians in my lifetime as matters stand today -- earn our admiration.

When/if another is found, we may find ourselves back on the right path.

50 years ago muslim immigrants wouldn't be much of an issue, its been in the past 30 years they have become radicalized.  And again universal healthcare is opposed by the majority of the country.  That's again something force on us against our will.

Things like Title IX were hotly contested, now accepted. Things like single motherhood and divorce carried a stigma, now it's universally accepted. Now it's taboo just to mention black crime or to mention that Islam isn't compatible with western culture.

It was nice to feel strong, and able to face the problems without being held back by our own fears of acting.  Its easy to cry about how hard things are and how boned everything is. Its harder to go fix things.

Huh. I remember clearly feeling like we were so far more powerful when the hostages were released than when that actual fool Carter was in. I also knew that he was a powerful figure for good when watching him at Reykjavik. The soviets were still there but didn't seem to be winning. We were holding our own. No one was telling me to turn down my thermostat or get in line for gas. There was an optimism and a feeling that the United States was going to prevail. I never got the sense that Reagan was clueless as to who and what we were.

I do remember the left (particularly academia) going ballistic on Reagan (not quite as shrill or vulgar as with Palin), but I also remember that a lot of places we assume are lefty warehouses of propaganda today got caught up in America in the 80s.

I remember some bands going from vapid or anti-America (or more accurately vapid social commentary that resulted in same) to seeing a lot more positive and even pro-American sentiment. I remember having lost the early 70s "good feelings" for a grimmer view, a lot of TV shows and pop culture leaned back toward people working together and finding happy endings.

I remember that shaking when Bush I was elected, and the academic voice of criticism getting louder, and then that "good vibe" going away after Clinton was elected.

I think the "bad vibe" got pretty well entrenched and hasn't gone away since.

It's a shallow metric, but it means *something* if not everything.

As to the "electability" issues, I believe she could win. It would be ridiculously tough, but she's got spine and principles, so it's not unthinkable. Yeah, there are a lot of factors to consider, and that's one of them. I've been a supporter of Romney since the Nineties, so him being involved in the 2008 primary felt almost like a victory to me. Certainly a step in the right direction. Doesn't mean he's perfect or anyone else in the field is incompetent/evil, he's just my preference. The primary campaign/debates will tell the tale. If he wins, he wins. If he loses, I support whoever the nominee is.

I was watching Ronald Reagan's inaurural speech went to take clothes from washer to dryer and now see George W Bush.  Is he our next republican icon?  I dislike O'Reilly on FNC, he is to easy on Obama.  I had television on when I paid attention to it, to CSPAN, I saw Sarah Palin's speech again along with Dick Cheney's and the Q & A that followed, which I founs interesting.

Rather than watch an Obama commerical on Fox , I am no into football, I changed to CNN or MSNBC. I'm sorry I was not paying attention to it but one host asked commentator if GWB might be the next republican that we honor, guest said only time will tell.

Proud to say that my first time voting was for Reagan for President.  I still remember my mouth dropping open like a trouth when he gave his speech at the Berlin Wall.  He was a man seeped in midwestern values and love for his country that was unmistakable. He didn't equivocate, he didn't spin, when it mattered he called it like it was.  Whether or not you agreed with his every decision, there was no doubt that he loved his country and was doing the best job that he could in order to ensure it's survival and it's future.  He was a cheerleader, but it was real.  Not spin, not pomp and circumstance, he believed in America.

...to the point where I think that there was this general feeling like it would always be thus.  Something that was missed was that the strength and commitment, the fortitude and patriotism of those of the Greatest Generation would end with that generation. That unless WE the children of those people, didn't carry the mantle, it could be irrevocably lost in time.  We took it for granted.

That is what I've learned from living through the Reagan years and beyond.  That false sense of security that one has and then realizing late that if anyone is going to carry that on to pass it on to future generations, that can only come from US.

He isn't with us to be the elder statesman.  I can only imagine what would come out of his mouth were he to see the antics of present day DC.  With dignity and grace and a goodly sense of humour, lobbing well aimed verbal grenades at those who needed most to hear his words.
