Worse times?  For who?  I'd be happy to go back to the mid-late 1800's and live under one of the Western European monarchies.  10% income tax sounds a hell of a lot better than the ass raping I get thanks to the democratically elected despotism in this nation.  Such a monarch wasn't too concerned about how much fat was in your diet, or whether you offended ethnic minorities when you spoke, or much else about how you ran your own damn business - so long as you didn't try to threaten his rule.  He was interested in running his country, which he intended to preserve in tact, and maybe glorify yet further, for his heir.  Plus when a monarch buys art, it's art.  Not bullshit masquerading as art as is puchased by the oh-so-enlightened democratic governments of our day. 

As for the French, the defects in their monarchy were the result of a cultural deficiencies in France itself.  They had the monarchs that their culture would naturally produce. 

If you think the Queen doesn't have behind-the-scenes power, think again.  Even putting aside the fact that she's richer than god and could buy and sell most of the legislators, if she ever wanted to cause a governmental crisis she would have little trouble doing so.  There are still formal monarchal powers that are never exercised, but still could be.  Regardless, the monarchy is one of the few symbols of legitimate continuity the British government currently maintains.

I was looking over wedding venues this past week (boss's daughter is getting married) and one of the more disturbing things I saw were pictures of brides in strapless gowns with full sleeve tattoos. Across shoulders, back, down arms. I was thinking why in the hell would you not wear a sleeved gown? It was seriously tacky.

I know, it is always shocking to me when I attend black tie auctions and there are women there in strapless gowns with their skin just covered in tattoos. Though I did see one once, her back tattoo was so lovely that it almost looked like part of the backless gown.

167 #160 Hey,  Reactionary, I do sympathize.  Although I am usually proud of our form of government,  there is something to be said for a constitutional monarchy.  Here are some benefits:

1.  All of the ceremonial,  visiting with teams and scholarship winners,  prize awards, entertainment,  etc.  is handled by the quenn.  That means whoever is head of the government doesn't fill up his residence with parties and events like Motown spectaculars and Cinco de Mayo and such stuff.

2.  Things like State dinners are handled by the palace,  not by people like Denise Richards. 

3.  Politicians who want votes cannot bribe people by inviting them to dinner at Buckingham Palace.  The Queen invites whom SHE wants.

4.  Ceremonies are left to people who have done it for a thousand years.  This is why we did not see a lack of decorum in this wedding.  The biggest scandal is Princess Beatrice's hat. (Also,  I noticed all of the ladies worse stockings.  Michelle Obama,  take notice!)

5. Divorced from the star quality of the monarchy,  British politics is a bit more on issues than personalities,  unike our system (see Barrack Obama, Donald Trump,  etc.).

The monarchy is the symbol of britain.  If you had watched BBC America today,  you would have seen a people PROUD of their country and wishing the couple well.  Even the liberal types were there,  waving the Union Jack. 

The Queen holds their nation together.  I don't mock it at all,  because in our country,  the person who holds that position is a president,  and most times they cannot get half of the people to support them,  and it makes us a far nastier people because of it.

Consider Rousseau vs. his American contemporaries who became the Founders of our Nation. But then, consider well F. Bastiat before condemning all French as culturally deficient.

Europeans never truly revoked authoritarianism, despite the revolutionary propaganda battle cry for Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. The masses inevitably left governance to their "betters" even from within their social "class" caste.

Mark Steyn was reflecting on the American people's devolution into that numb mindset of trusting Ivy League elitists as the "best candidates" when of all people, the elitists deserve the least trust given their record in office and their disdain for the Tea Party common people as anything but pawns to be played and abused. The distinction of style does not qualify a distinction in substance, as if attracting more flies with honey than with vinegar means that there's a different end result awaiting the attracted flies.

A sign of classy is the "tattoo cover-up makeup" now on sale at bridal houses. There are many brides, as mentioned above, who let it all hang out when it should be hidden from view.

I just saw a photo of The Won's putting their hoodoo voodoo mark on today's space shuttle launch (scrubbed until Monday). Even Granny was there. Moochelle wore a white teeshirt with a parachute-type billowing back and capris. I look better when I clean the house. I am not sure, but think she left her wighat at home. Barky was also in his casual Friday clothes with his sleeves rolled up, ready to work on the shuttle. If his luck holds for the shuttle like his basketball brackets, well, I am a bit concerned for the astronauts. I am wondering if they will all return for Monday's launch at our expense on Air Force One. This has not been a good day for Obummer and teevee.

I dunno about the crazy part, but yes a guardsmans was thrown. from what i saw at one the uk newspaper sites, he and a cop were able to restrain it to keep it from going into the crowd where it appeared to be headed at one point. the guardsman was unable to remount (heh) and the horse finally got away. luckily, camilla headed back to her stall. apparently you can see kate looking worried as this all played out.

Yes, the horse thought it was the Ascot races with all the hats on the ladies, with the exception, of course, of Beatrice's antlers. Great day for the UK.

Apparently the bridal industry decided that sleeves were like totally last millenium or something. A steady diet of Bridezillas has taught me though that strapless gowns are modern engineering marvels to keep some of those gals strapped in.

Yep.  I will admit to having a passing interest in wedding dresses (thank you, TLC) and it is very difficult to find dresses that are with straps or sleeves that aren't part of a "modesty" collection.  They are making a slow comeback, though, if you look in the right places.  Plus, some brides need sleeves for church, so they wear a shawl which gets taken off for the reception, leaving them strapless in the end anyway.  

Everything you see on TV is strapless.  Ok, maybe 95%.  That's still high.  We don't need to return to giant monster sleeves, but it would be nice to see something original again.  It is all part of the fashion cycle of what's in and out, but it is heavily slanted, especially in the wedding sector.
