Ryan Will Not Run for President; Decision is "Final"
— Ace

Breaking.

I put the long Ziegler/Romney/Perry/Palin post into draft, as this is a breaking story, so it should go up now. But I will re-publish the other one soon.

This is good/bad.

Although Ryan was expected to be the candidate of Establishment Intellectuals, many people so accused of being such actually were down on him, due to the political courage -- and equal political danger -- of the Ryan plan.

While I would normally be counted as part of Ryan's natural constituency, I couldn't get a lot of passion for the candidacy, now. Partly that's because I've already sold myself on Perry, of course.

11 I like Ryan a ton, but it's too early for him to run. That and if we can take the White House and Senate in 2012, we will need him to write the bugets. Hopefully Boehner can get voted out of his leadership position and Ryan can run the House Republicans.

14 Good.  This election needs to be about jobs, not about cutting Grandma's Medicare and Social Security, which is exactly what Obama would've turned it into if Ryan had been the nominee.

And anyway, he never would've won the nomination.  Merely would've taken votes away from Romney and Perry, weakening both to no perceptible gain.

29 Very glad Chaffetz isn't challenging Hatch, btw.  Chaffetz is...not a guy who I like on a personal level, but more importantly Orrin Hatch is the sole reason we have the greatest justice now on the Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas.  As far as I'm concerned, until Hatch starts doing crazy shit like voting for Obamacare or Porkulus, that's some serious Lifetime Pass shit there.  (To put it more soberly: he's exactly who we need chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee -- I wouldn't trust that position to anyone else in line for it, and neither should any authentic conservative who cares about the direction of the Court.)

66 >>>But Chaffetz...

>>>somebody got to him

Nah, I'm pretty sure he saw the writing on the wall when the trifecta of Hannity, Levin, AND Sarah Palin all came out forcefully to endorse Hatch.

Also, Chaffetz is rather disliked in UT GOP politics (he's a bit of a prick, to put it mildly).  He would've had to make this run all on his own, without any fundraising support, against Hatch.  Now it certainly could've been done -- witness Mike Lee last year -- but Bob Bennett was not very well-loved even after being around for a couple of terms, meanwhile Hatch is a giant of UT politics, and as you can see his support extends to significant elements of the Tea Party/grassroots (as seen in his list of endorsements, both nationally and in-state) as well as the establishment.  It was always going to be an uphill climb, and if Chaffetz wasn't able to take him down at the convention (which he wouldn't have been able to, given the margin required to avoid a primary) he really had no shot in the primary at large.

Strategically speaking, there just wasn't a very plausible way forward to victory for Chaffetz like there was for Lee (who was able to count on a second, nearly as strong. primary candidate to help bump Bennett to THIRD at the convention, eliminating him entirely from the actual primary vote).

79 Hatch has done some good things, but he's way to cozy with the establishment and his support for DREAM Act, bailouts, Geithner, Holder, Ted Kennedy, Fannie/Freddie, etc., far outweigh other things.  This is Utah.  Likely any Republican can win, so primary him with someone who's not so establishment.

80 The Weekly Standard:

"RyanÂ’s comments on the Republican field came one day before Texas governor Rick Perry announced his candidacy, though he was widely expected to join the race. PerryÂ’s campaign reached out to Ryan last week and, while there is no indication PerryÂ’s entry in the race had any bearing on RyanÂ’s decision, the two men plan to meet in a few weeks when they are both near Washington, D.C. Perry has called Social Security a 'Ponzi scheme' and called for reform. ThatÂ’s stronger language than Ryan typically uses but Perry is plainly willing to raise these previously untouchable issues."

84 Speaker of the House Ryan.  I like the sound of that.  His destiny is in the House, not the presidency.

Posted by: Soona - Tearorrist at August 22, 2011 11:32 AM (TyVdY)

85 I think this is a good decision by Ryan, both for himself and, most importantly, for the nation. He wasn't assured of gaining any traction, as courageous as he may have been with his Plan. But, he might have muddied the field enough (more) to make it easier for President Petulant to get re-elected (see also Palin, Sarah, if she jumps in now). By not running, he remains in the House, where he's desperately needed on fiscal issues, and if,  by some cataclysmic stroke of bad luck/God's punishment/alien invasion/GOP stupidity (take your pick), the whiny little punk gets 4 more years in the White House, Ryan will have a better chance of being elected in 2016 (with the country in *much* worse shape by then) by telling the truth about fiscal matters than he will in 2012. And, he's still young enough to run an election cycle or two after that if Perry or Romney or whoever wins a second term in 2016.

Good, levelheaded move by a good, levelheaded guy.

86 Also, Chaffetz is rather disliked in UT GOP politics (he's a bit of a prick, to put it mildly).

On what are you basing this assertion?

Chaffetz got the biggest round of applause at the Utah Valley GOP Lincoln Dinner when he spoke.  The next closest was our Lt. Gov., followed distantly by Mike Lee.  Hatch was not well-received.  I actually felt a little embarrassed by how cold the reception was given that Mrs. Hatch was there.

89 I suspect the donors are pretty well committed to their candidates now.  Not that they can't change their minds later, but I bet anybody getting in the race now is going to get the "Sorry, but I already told xxxx he had my support" line. Anybody without a campaign team in place now and getting in this late is only jockeying for the VP nomination.
