S-S-S-Saturday Night ONT [Ben]
— Open Blogger

The cover for Lindsey LohanÂ’s Playboy has been leaked. ItÂ’s amazing what makeup, lighting, different camera lenses, and photoshop can do. She almost looks attractive in that photo.

ItÂ’s really a shame how far sheÂ’s fallen. And to think I used to sift through her garbage looking for discarded toothbrushes and dryer lint.

Update: DonÂ’t forget to use the Amazon Widget for your Christmas/Hannukah shopping. It helps put some money in AceÂ’s coin purse at no extra cost to you. Amazon has an aray of hobo hunting tools. I highly recommend this knife. It's cheap, dependable and sharp. It's best used for camping, skinning hobo meat, or ending arguments.

How To Get Fired From Work: Volume VII
A PA man published a fake obituary for his living mother so he could get paid bereavement time off of work.

Democrat editor Randy Bartley says he accepted the obituary in good faith after being unable to confirm the funeral arrangements at press time. He told The Derrick newspaper on Friday that the woman was very understanding.

What Really Happened to Air France Flight 447
rdbrewer linked to this in the sidebar, but it really is worth your time. It's gut wrenching to read, especially since you know the outcome.

Unlike the control yokes of a Boeing jetliner, the side sticks on an Airbus are "asynchronous"—that is, they move independently. "If the person in the right seat is pulling back on the joystick, the person in the left seat doesn't feel it," says Dr. David Esser, a professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. "Their stick doesn't move just because the other one does, unlike the old-fashioned mechanical systems like you find in small planes, where if you turn one, the [other] one turns the same way." Robert has no idea that, despite their conversation about descending, Bonin has continued to pull back on the side stick.

Second that emotion. The more inexperienced pilot doggedly held the stick back despite being ordered by his superior to release the controls. That having been said, I still think it's idiotic that Airbus controls are independent of each other. This crash is a good reason they shouldn't be.

63

Really? My reading was "idiot in the cockpit."

It was definitely pilot error, but the whole problem arose from the fact that the other two pilots didn't know the idiot pilot had his stick pulled back the entire time.

Had the controls been synched, they would have known. If you look at the last couple of sentences, the other two pilots found out he had been holding the stick back moments before they impacted the ocean. When he told them, they immediately realized what was causing them to crash.

65 That Air France story is horrifying. I'm scared to fly, although not phobic (that is, I can do it if I have to), but in stories like that (and in stories about the September 11 attacks), all I can think about is how horrible it must have been for the people on the plane before the end. And, as the story notes, the Air France crash didn't have to happen.

67 That transcipt from flight 447 was just horrifying.  One guy killed them all.

Captain:  Gentlemen, we're not going to make it
Copilot:  I don't understand what when wrong, I've had the stick back the whole time.
Captain:  Sacre Bleu!

Splash.

Again, that's right, but had the controls been sync'ed, the other pilots would have known he was still holding the stick back. They didn't know he was doing that until he told them seconds before impact.

90 The whole "one stick pulled back, the other pushed forward" thing is indicative of poor cockpit discipline, especially in an emergency (no matter what the flight software does to prioritize the commands).  Standard practice would have been for one pilot or the other flying the aircraft while the other was communicating, checking systems, etc.  When the aviation shtf, ordinarily the pilot in command will announce "I've got the aircraft" or whatever the French equivalent might be.  These guys were in over their heads and recovery might have been impossible.

137 The whole "one stick pulled back, the other pushed forward" thing is indicative of poor cockpit discipline, especially in an emergency (no matter what the flight software does to prioritize the commands).  Standard practice would have been for one pilot or the other flying the aircraft while the other was communicating, checking systems, etc.  When the aviation shtf, ordinarily the pilot in command will announce "I've got the aircraft"

That was the problem, the senior co-pilot didn't take over, he was yelling for the captain when he should have went to work. He didn't take control of the airplane which he should have, even if it means punching the junior copilot in the mouth. At that particular point it was all on the senior co-pilot and he failed.

Posted by: robtr at December 10, 2011 11:25 PM (MtwBb)

The issue was that the jet, like all others, has separate flight controls.  Unlike other manufacturers, Airbus' contrls aren't coordinated, linked, or otherwise attached, so you, playing the good pilot who would like to live, could hear the stall alarm and push the nose down, while I, playing the idiot who will shortly kill everyone on board, can pull back on the stick and nobody in the cockpit will know.   This puts the state of the onboard computers into an "I have no idea" state, and reverts the plane to manual control.  Now you have to wonder why the aircraft won't respond to your efforts to end the stall, and all I have to do is continue to panic and pull hard.  Disaster by numbers.

OK, I see that. You're acknowledging the idiocy, but saying that aircraft technology has had the right sort of idiot-proofing to mitigate it for years, so why didn't they use it? Good question.

I thought that after the Eastern Airlines flight 401 crash in 1972 that they'd never have that happen again.

EAL 401 crashed when the pilots flying the L-1011 were trying to fix a landing gear indicator light. The captain had bumped the yoke which disengaged the autopilot, but he was leaning over to fix the bulb and not watching his panel. The copilot was still seated but his panel showed that the plane was still flying at 2,000 ft on autopilot.

The FAA and Lockheed found the mismatch and remedied that problem

Does anybody know how to find people like me?  I've dropped out of the job market (as did 300000 others last month), but I'm now no longer locatable.

171 Splunge, the copilot's stick is tucked away on the right hand side. It's hard to see either stick. None of the crew covered themselves in glory, that's for sure. As a frequent traveller remarked to me about flying in Europe... Take a chance, fly Air France!

Probably not but after the multiple mistakes the junior copilot already made the senior copilot should have been the only one with his hands on the controls when the captain arrived. He should have made damn sure of that.

Why have one then? Stall warnings mean you are stalling. Nobody has built a damn airplane that won't stall and if they did why would thay make stall warnings go off 75 frigging times? Just as a joke, just to tell you that if we let you fly this plane the way you wanted to here is what would be happening to you right now?

Well, one thing I can tell you is that back when I could only work part-time (same sort of field), searches on major job websites that would turn up hundreds of opportunities, would go nearly silent if I turned on the "part-time" flag. So maybe there's a chance for some visibility there.

Alternately, you could search through LinkedIn for vaguely inactive profiles (not currently employed).

180 Crash of Eastern Airlines Flight 401

The NTSB investigation discovered that the autopilot had been inadvertently switched from altitude hold to CWS (Control Wheel Steering) mode in pitch. In this mode once the pilot releases pressure on the yoke the autopilot will maintain the pitch attitude selected by the pilot until he moves the yoke again. Investigators believe the autopilot switched modes when the captain accidentally leaned against the yoke while turning to speak to the flight engineer, who was sitting behind and to the right of him. The slight forward pressure on the stick would have caused the aircraft to enter a slow descent, maintained by the CWS system

The final NTSB report cited the cause of the crash as pilot error, specifically: "the failure of the flight crew to monitor the flight instruments during the final four minutes of flight, and to detect an unexpected descent soon enough to prevent impact with the ground. Preoccupation with a malfunction of the nose landing gear position indicating system distracted the crew's attention from the instruments and allowed the descent to go unnoticed.

So is that when they decided to put a front window in the cockpit?

Posted by: Splunge at December 10, 2011 07:48 PM (2IW5Q)

the flight control conputer has two modes - normal law and alternate law. in normal law it is "impossible to stall because the computer will not let the pilot do so. in alternate law the computer overrides are disconnected and the pilot is given authority to do things the computer would normally not allow the pilot to do.

All true, but IIRC, the preliminary report mentioned some kind of pitot static or angle-of-attack fault that led the aircraft to either fly into or be flown into the stall.  Both algorithms could have been working from bad or conflicted input data.  Also that AF had no similar failures in their simulator curricula.

If you are in a situation where you are not trusting your instruments then you would want to disengage the autopilot and associated controls. continuing to declare a stall warning could be a result of a malfunctioning computer and the pilots would disregard the warning, though i think it is more likely these pilots were overloaded and probably not even registering the warning. If you were flying under vfr and you were able to see that the information the instruments were giving you incorrect information you would certainly want a way to disable the autopilot and take manual control.

Some kids are gorgeous and you know they're going to rule the world when they come of age. So when the remake of 'The Parent Trap' came around, you could tell this kid was going to be a looker in a few years.

Sometimes it doesn't last. I thought Kirsten Dunst was going to be much more attractive as an adult than her appearance in 'Interview with the Vampire' promised. Hilary Duff is another who was amazingly cute in her jailbait stage but didn't carry it forward.

Attractive but the potential seemed so much greater.

It can be a fun guessing game. Christina Ricci could have gone very differently depending on how her features matured. A while back she was in a movie 'Penelope' about a girl born with a pig-like snout for a nose. It didn't quite work because she was still really hot, snout or no.

Posted by: robtr at December 10, 2011 11:56 PM (MtwBb) initial altitude, and though it is still ascending at a dangerously high rate, it is flying within its acceptable envelope. But for reasons unknown, Bonin once again increases his back pressure on the stick, raising the nose of the plane and bleeding off speed. Again, the stall alarm begins to sound. Still, the pilots continue to ignore it, and the reason may be that they believe it is impossible for them to stall the airplane. It's not an entirely unreasonable idea: The Airbus is a fly-by-wire plane; the control inputs are not fed directly to the control surfaces, but to a computer, which then in turn commands actuators that move the ailerons, rudder, elevator, and flaps. The vast majority of the time, the computer operates within what's known as normal law, which means that the computer will not enact any control movements that would cause the plane to leave its flight envelope. "You can't stall the airplane in normal law," says Godfrey Camilleri, a flight instructor who teaches Airbus 330 systems to US Airways pilots. But once the computer lost its airspeed data, it disconnected the autopilot and switched from normal law to "alternate law," a regime with far fewer restrictions on what a pilot can do. "Once you're in alternate law, you can stall the airplane," Camilleri says. It's quite possible that Bonin had never flown an airplane in alternate law, or understood its lack of restrictions. According to Camilleri, not one of US Airway's 17 Airbus 330s has ever been in alternate law. Therefore, Bonin may have assumed that the stall warning was spurious because he didn't realize that the plane could remove its own restrictions against stalling and, indeed, had done so.

216 I lost many friends in airplanes and one of the hardest things for the families to ever face or admit is that the accident was pilot error. Unless it some catastrophic mechanical failure all airplane accidents are the result of being a bad pilot, if not in skill in judgment. Harsh to say but it's the truth. It is just really tragic when incompetence of two or three people in the cockpit all converge at once.

The co-pilot's altimeter still read at 2000 ft because of the flaw, and he still thought he the plane was at altitude. They discovered they were in deep shit when the captain returned to his controls and saw that the plane had dropped to under 200 ft. The copilot's instruments still showed him at 2000, and he even started a turn to head to the east for approach to Miami. The left wingtip was the first part of the plane to dig into the mud

231 Just finished watching "Obsession" on TCM. A black and white British murder movie from the forties and better than anything I've seen at the theater in quite a while. I love suspense and movie makers now overdo the gore, slaughter, and special effects, and end up with very little actual suspense or scariness.

237 235 192 190 @188

The co-pilot's altimeter still read at 2000 ft because of the flaw, and he still thought he the plane was at altitude. They discovered they were in deep shit when the captain returned to his controls and saw that the plane had dropped to under 200 ft. The copilot's instruments still showed him at 2000, and he even started a turn to head to the east for approach to Miami. The left wingtip was the first part of the plane to dig into the mud

Wow. That sucks. I know some pilots, but if the altimeter were sending out lies, and the artificial horizon was no help, I don't know whether they'd have gotten through that one either.

I sometimes think these new glass panels can give a pilot an information overload.

All my experience is on the military side and given the additon of mission information on top of primary flight instruments, it's damned sure an issue there.  I think, and lots of human factors types would agree, that digital information is more difficult to process than analog.  One to two more mental steps to decide what's going on.  Lots of glass panels display PFI in numeric format rather than as a representation of an analog "dial", airspeed most prominently.

I just wanted to add that since we're posting on a "smart military blog".  Heh.

Correction: December 10, 2011

An article on Friday about a hearing in which members of Congress sparred with Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. over a disputed gun-trafficking investigation described incorrectly one of his exchanges with Representative Darrell Issa, a Republican of California. At one point during the Thursday hearing Mr. Holder rebuked Mr. Issa, using the McCarthy-era phrase “Have you no shame?” Mr. Issa responded by repeating the phrase back to Mr. Holder. It is not the case that Mr. Issa did not respond.

I've read that experienced pilots can tell by the pitch of the engines that something isn't right, even if the engines are not malfunctioning. The human body can also play tricks on the mind, such as turning too long which can lead the pilot to think he's still banking and compensating by banking the other way and thinking you're level. That's probably what caused JFK Jr to fly into the Atlantic

I am not a commercial pilot or even an experience private pilot. I took about 20 hours of intruction towards my private pilots license 25 years ago. At night or in clouds you only have your instruments, Pilots get vertigo or otherwise don't believe what their intruments are telling them and they die.

My intructer told me what to do when you lose an engine in a single engine plane at night.

Watch your intruments, glide down to 500' and turn on your landing light. If you don't like what you see. Turn it back off.

316 I am too impaired by the combined effects of an iced mocha with two extra shots and a pain pill to opine too much on Ms Lohan's figure, but I will say that given what we're learning about the depraved monsters in charge of child actors in Hollywood, I am not going to ever be too judgmental of her behaviour again. Her mama strikes me as the type who would have looked the other way. May the souls of everyone of those bastards who hurt the little ones rot in Hell, right along side of the ones who knew about it and never said a word.

Also, someone needs to tell the Israelis to start building bunkers now; by the time President Perry takes control, we will be ready to start the long overdue process of turning the sands of the Middle East into glass.

Lastly, allowing French pilots to fly French planes seems to be begging for trouble.

That is all.

318 Found it. There was a special on Congresswoman Giffords and Diane Sawyer used it as an opportunity to connect the shooting to Sarah Palin, once again. Even though that nutjob' shooting of Giffords had absolutely nothing to do with Sarah Palin. Sawyer hates Palin's guts and used her position as a "serious journalist" to inaccurately smear her with a shooting that she had no influence on, because that is just how much of an asshole Diane Sawyer is.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- On issues from air pollution to contraception, President Barack Obama has broken sharply with liberal activists and come down on the side of business interests and social conservatives as he moves more to the political middle for his re-election campaign.

Without a Democratic challenger who might tug him to the left, Obama is free to try to neutralize Republican efforts to tar him as a liberal ideologue by taking steps toward the political center.

369 In regards to that aircraft "accident". Here is my response-

Pffft, I am an aircraft mechanic with only a few hours of flight time. One thing is for sure, that it was NOT pilot error, IMO.

Let me explain-
How many times in the article did they say that the control sticks were over riding each other? That they had no feed back? Well hell, it is then simply a design flaw in the system. Never, EVER should you have two inputs to a system and NEVER EVER should you have a system that attempts to understand what the two inputs are telling the system.

It is a fundamental problem that should Never be implemented in an aircraft. EVER! There should only be one input and they should be connected. Think about it, you have two pilots doing opposite things, yet one of them does not know what the other is doing. They do not even know which input the other is doing.

This problem will occur again and again and again if that control system is not changed.

Here is a fact, when in a stall, the main thing you have to do is increase speed, you do that by increasing power and by putting nose down. Why the heck would you pull back if your speed is dropping? It just does not make any sense. Never, ever let your aircraft stall. To me, it makes no sense whatsoever.

I have my opinion on this and it's not very optimistic.  We are very close to the point where half the country is supportingthe other half. Once we go over the point where more than half are taking and less than half are giving we half reached the point of no return.

409 Didn't even pay attention to the live blog.

I did for about two minutes, between Drew and Gabes constant cheerleading for Gingrich it was worse then the fan boys in the comment section. Dave in Texas and ace tried to humor it up but for the most it wasn't anything to read.

410 And couldn't even get the tree decorated because the cat was intent on climbing it.

Should have took some video and sent it to rdbrewer and CDR M. They both seem infatuated with cat videos.

412 Uh, some of you need your eyes checked: Lohan has saggy tits for someone her age. And, yeah, she tried to do the MM schtick a few years ago I think in VF. She's a fuck up, uninsurable, and is working hard to be on the celebrity death pool's.

416 Was Playboy able to airbrush the location bracelet on Lohan's ankle or did they crop it out?  Somebody should ask that senile fuck Hef if the only difference between him and Larry Flynt is a wheelchair.

424 GMB @ 383: "We are very close to the point where half the country is supporting the other half. Once we go over the point where more than half are taking and less than half are [producing, no recovery is possible.]"

Absolutely true.  Though actually the no-return point comes just a bit before this, when a majority of voters are so addled that they vote an unvetted socialist cipher as president, and give his party (Dems) firm majorities in both houses of congress [spit].

Thanks again, 52-ers.  Like the pilots who rode that Airbus down seven miles to crash into the Atlantic, your naivete and irrationality have doomed a country that could well have recovered.

Of course a huge share of the blame goes to the MFM, whose members and editors hated conservatives so much that they lied and covered for the SCOAMF--as they always to for all Dems, like Bawney, Harry, Jamie Gorelick, Holder and the whole sorry lot.

You have sown.  So shall ye reap.  But sadly, your actions (like Holder's in Fast and Furious) will also wind up killing a whole hellofalot of good, hard-working, innocent people.

But that won't bother you.

429 Robert: I would not take 1200mg of ibuprofen at a whack. I have had prescription doses up to 800mg which is twice the OTC dosage. Take with food and probably get the gelcaps as well for that kind of dosage unless you have a very cast iron stomach. Arnica gel is good for swelling. You might have to go to a health food place to find it, but its not just placebo effect. capsacian sp? will block nerves and may increase circulation but will do nothing to reduce swelling. I'd use it for a tight back or arthritis pain but not something with swelling personally. Hope your knee is better soon.

435 "Their stick doesn't move just because the other one does, unlike the old-fashioned mechanical systems like you find in small planes, where if you turn one, the [other] one turns the same way."

Or like what's in Boeing planes, even the 787. (it is FBW, but retains the traditional linkage between both yokes and wheels)
