Saturday Afternoon Gender Throwdown. [krakatoa]
— Open Blogger

A new comprehensive study has uncovered yet another instance of the misogyny inherent in the system.

It may come as a surprise to you, but thanks to science, (and a healthy Gubm't grant, no doubt) we now know that kid's books are just a cesspool of gender inequality.

There seems to be some confusion by the good Doc running the study on why this would be so.

“I had kind of expected that books would start off in 1900 being unequal and become more equal over time,” she said.

“We were surprised by the historical patterns and by the animals. The fact that the animals were the most unequal and even in the 1990s there were still two male animals to every one female animal.”

I'd like to think that the hobo-hunting hoardes of AoS could come up with some good theories as to why this might be so.

I'll start the ball rolling: Chick characters just aren't that interesting, what with their primping and gossiping and shopping and going on and on (and on) about their pretty ponies, and most of all, their disinclination to ever catch a hobo in a pit-trap.

Any other ideas?

LOL, here at AOSHQ we find that all the lesbian pron allways has more female characters so the study is flawed.

Actually it's the opposite. Western media portrays women as equals and tough and stuff  out of political correctness and the old wimpy female characters were put there for girls. Girls like that. female characters are very popular in other countries, just look as Japanese Anime and Manga. The difference is female characters there still accept and celebrate traditional female portrayals. The female character, no matter how tough, is still always really looking for Prince Charming and reverts to a traditional role in the end.

Yes, the study is an epic fail because the original target for the stories was the author's son.

In the time period you mentioned, all of Louisa May Alcott's books had leading female characters.

In Little Women, Jo. In Eight Cousins, it was Rose Campbell.

They were very strong characters. Jo financially supported her family.

I have always found that the boy characters in children's books find themselves in more interesting, crazy, or wild predicaments than the girl characters do so they are more fun to read about. But, the boy characters are often "schooled" by a girl character so there is that.

Note, I am not saying that the girl characters aren't ever interesting, certainly Alice led a pretty effed up life there for a bit in her books, and Dorothy as well, just that for the short pithy picture books it is often easier to telegraph a bunch of ideas about a character all at once by making that character a boy.

And I can't believe I just wasted any synapses thinking about an essentially nonsensical study.

Very, very simple, as the parent of any boy can tell you.  Boys don't care much about stories about girls.  Even at very young ages, little boys will not listen to a story that doesn't have at least one or two boys in it.  Maybe it's the writing style or subject matter of "all girl" stories, but even as a toddler, a boy just doesn't pick girl stories.  Girls will listen to stories with only boys just fine.

Take from that what you will.

The market then decides.

Posted by: catmman at May 07, 2011 12:40 PM (DTzwU)

This is something I have wondered for a long time. Why are males better than women at almost everything. Take this study. It's not a lack of female characters in books over time. There are plenty of female characters. It's just all the classics seem to be about and/or written by men. You could put this down to inequality but there are plenty of women characters and writers who buck that trend even 150 years ago. So why?

It's like that in many things. Why aren't there more women Chess Grand masters? Why aren't women just as good as men in billiards at the top level? It can't be size and weight. Philippino men have come to have a very strong position in billiards despite being smaller and weaker than your average male.

Why? Is this true?

36

Only a little off topic.

On a trip through the northeast, a giant highlight for me was a visit to the Alcott home.

For a girl who had devoured each and every one of her books, it was like walking on hallowed ground. Each room was exactly as I had pictured them when I was a wee girl.

Word is that Louisa played for the opposite team, too. She hinted at it and never married.

Posted by: Who Knows at May 07, 2011 08:53 AM (1cx/R)

37

Of course, all of this is filtered through the researchers' world view that there's something horribly wrong with our society. I always chuckle when I remember the Time cover that declared there was no inherent difference between men and women, only to be contradicted with the other cover that said maybe there was a real difference.

Reality can be a harsh mistress, as every man knows...

in Boston today they're having their SLUT WALK

Why? To raise awareness, of course! It's time to take the shame out of being promiscuous.

Sluts are no different from homosexuals, they say. The persecution must end, they say.

=====================================

"The walk will welcome both men and women in any form of clothing.

Schott-Mancini, also a survivor of sexual assault, likened the movement to  successful gay rights campaigns of the past.

“It’s like ‘queer’ in the ‘80s,” she said. “That was a derogatory term and it’s almost been reclaimed. In a sense we’re trying to do that with ‘slut.’”"

I'm not stereotyping.  I'm telling you what I see.  I can go to the park and my 3 year old girl will talk about paint ball guns and riding her 4 - wheeler, and the moms get that nervous look on their faces.

It is really weird.  Plus I'm not saying all kids, but a lot of ads are geared this way too.

Go on the internet and look at the games for girls.  They are matching, coloring, helping animals, etc.

Also, I think the focus of the study was on children's books, which are horses of a different color. I don't think a gender imbalance in literature line of thinking would hold up for young adult or adult fiction at all.

But, I didn't read the article because I think gender inequality studies are stupid, especially when they involve male vs. female animal characters in books aimed for people whose idea of a good time is flinging cheerios across the room.

One of the things you are taught in the service is "target acquisition."  basically meaning you make sure that you shoot the right thing, at the right time.  Would it be WRONG! to engage a target during Adhan if they are walking AWAY from a point of prayer, or not preparing for prayer?

and I'm sorry, I am one of those people who thinks that we ARE at war with Islam, not ALL muslims as Larry O'Donnel likes to say, but with Islam.  As I said, there are always fools who need something to believe, and will follow any huckster.

101 In the nature of cultural norms in media and reporting, we have almost 2 generations of education, as a man, that husbands are stupid, bumbling and borderline worthless.   So Why the Fuck should my generation bother?   I don't fall into that stereotype (developed over about 40 years) but too many women assume it, and I walk away from them.

Guys?  Just play golf and watch Television and you end up with a hot wife who hates you and children who don't appreciate you.

Ironically?  One of the Best family based SitComs over the last 30 years?  "Married With Children."   Al was a fool, Peggy was a Fool, Bud was a Fool,  Kelly was a Fool, but they were real people with real problems.  Not in Every episode, but quite often there was a storyline of the family of fools dealing with the fact that they are a family.  The offense was mutual, the conflicts were mutual, the situations were mutual, and while the family had their internal conflicts those conflicts were reserved for the family, with full knowledge that everyone else would stand up for their family.   I remember one episode where Bud, who was BRUTAL to kelly saw his sister with a mouse under her eye, and little bud, threatened the bigguy that kelly was dating when he came back to apologize, and Bud got his butt kicked.

Doesn't matter if he won, but he stood for his sister, his sister that he mocks on a weekly basis.

Along those lines, good luck making a TV show like "Good Times." nowadays.

Methinks those two points are reversed. She determined that the stories had a definite gender bias (primarily because she has one personally) and then she did her official "research."

My kids could care less what gender any literary character is.  A great story is a great story.  My boys read all manner of books - including loving Beverly Cleary's Ramona Quimby character.  They have read Swiss Family Robinson and followed it up with The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder. . .  geez.  So what, boys and girls are different and may instinctually behave one way or another. . .  but a great story is a great story.

By touting the "inequality" of such literature as Winnie-the-Pooh, this stupid doc/researcher is ruining good literature and taking the focus off the themes, ideas and more important junk in the story.  It's shallow.  I guess this is what is happening in culture.  Instead of focusing on the the deeper stuff, we're too busy worrying about the shallow.

Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at May 07, 2011 01:35 PM (P+zzG)

It's harmless enough.  Role playing is one way that children begin to understand the world.  It's no different than boys rough housing and playing soldier or cowboys and indians; the goal is to develop values through imitation.  A boy playing at being a soldier doesn't imitate cowering in fear behind cover, raping civilians, or spending all day writing paperwork.  He pretends to be fearless in battle, even dying valiantly, and to be tactically brilliant.

If a girl want's to go through a princess phase, then let her.  But remind her that a princess should always be courteous, neat, well behaved, educated...

151 Speaking as a Moronette, I can attest that books with female leads never interested me.  Sure I read and enjoyed all the original "Nancy Drew" books, but I was alwas much more drawn to the stories with male protagonists.  When I was a young child I was fairly equal opportunity, but most of the books I read as a child were things like Beatrix Potter and fairy tales, which are fairly well balanced in terms of gender representation.  For every story about a princess in a tower, there's a story about a young man becoming a prince.  And for every Peter Rabbit, there's a Jemima Puddleduck.

The young adult books, though, were AWFUL.  I could never stand "Babysitters' Club" or "Sweet Valley High."  I tried to read "Little Women" and just couldn't do it.  They bored the living daylights out of me.  That's what ended up drawing me into fantasy and sci-fi novels; they were so much more interesting than the typical girly fare, and they could have heroes or heroines doing equally fun things.  I still don't care for sci-fi or fantasy novels centered around a female protagonist, though.  Very rarely do I find one where the female lead isn't either A) a stone cold bitch I'd love to kick the shit out of, or B) a whiny victim.

Posted by: MWR at May 07, 2011 12:39 PM (CA2NO)

152 I just thought of one other "ironic" thing for this thread. It wasn't too long ago that we were discussing on the Monty Sunday book thread about how most books were now written from the point of view, or addressed to, women. That because most book sales are now to women.

So who most likely buys all these children's book. Most likely women. So even if this 'study" was correct it would most likely be women driving the "boy" book sales.

Somebody asked why girl stories are toxic to boys, but not the other way around. Part of it is that to be tomboy is cool. Girls are allowed to cross gender lines, even encouraged to do so with gusto these days. Perhaps too much so, don't kid yourself, the 90 lbs female warrior in the movies with all her ninja moves taking out all the big tough guys is a total fiction, and girls will get destroyed on high school football teams.

Yet the fact remains that boy-stuff is not off-limits to girls and girls are in fact encouraged to explore it. This is not true at all for boys. Girl-stuff is toxic to boys. Whereas girls gain status and praise by invading the boy-world, a boy will meet nothing but derision and scorn. Tomboys are good, girly-boys are a joke.

Failure to perform is also tolerated with girls. The girl out on the Little League field among the boys will get nothing but praise, re-inforcement, and positive notice by all spectators regardless of her athletic abilities. She might strike out every time, never catch a fly, never make an accurate throw, doesn't matter. Her male teammates will only get this kind of positive notice through exceptional play.

There was a credit card commercial a while back, featuring a woman who was doing all kinds of things with her new credit card. She was skiing! (and visibly sucking at it) Riding a motorcycle! (and visibly sucking at it) Golfing! (and visibly sucking at it). But it didn't matter one bit. She was a woman out there doing exciting things, and that was a selling point. Put a guy in that same comercial doing things in the same way, and the entire audience, men and women, would have one come-away, "That guy's a douche!"

Changing the gender bean-counts in children's stories isn't going to do a damn thing to change any of this, because all this falls out from nature. All this merely serves as another avenue for feminists to make busybody irritants of themselves in yet another area. Geena Davis has already started an effort to encourage young mothers to provide a running, feminist commentary when reading books or watching movies with their children. Always interjecting, "Did this character have to be a boy?" "Why are both those two roles male?", yada yada yada. That's Progressive, Positive Leadership! -- also, subversively screwing things up to where you might hardly be able to follow the movie with all that idiotic running commentary.

They're bitchy, spoiled brats.
