— Ace We've heard this before-- but we do know terrorists have always wanted to do such a thing. Only a lack of nuclear material keeps them from doing so, and who knows if they still lack it.
Our friends in Pakistan might have had an oopsie moment.
So not to panic anyone, but it is in the news.
Just two days before the 10th anniversary, New York City is on high alert.Federal and local authorities have beefed up security after receiving intelligence about a credible threat. The alleged plot by al Qaeda involves detonating car bombs on bridges and in tunnels in New York and Washington D.C. to coincide with the anniversary.
Chopper 2 HD got a look at the NYPD in action on Friday — police cruisers and orange cones marked one checkpoint on the George Washington Bridge. On the West Side Highway, at one of many other checkpoints, police were stopping and searching drivers, specifically vans and trucks. There is also a threat to bridges and tunnels.
Security was equally tight at Penn Station, where armed guards were keeping watch over travelers as Transportation Security Administration agents performed random bag checks, swiping packs for gunpowder.
...
But thatÂ’s only half of the problem. Officials are worried that this time it could be a dirty bomb.
“We have to think about a dirty bomb, where you take radiological material and mix it with conventional explosives,” NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
Of course, as our very good Neo-Bircher friends will be glad to tell you, this is all just made up, a conspiracy of the authoritarians in government to take your rights and take your guns. Don't be afraid of The Truth, and vote Ron Paul (RON PAUL!!).

People that are blindly trusting in government will end up in fema-camps! America needs to hear the truth about the political class in Washington and its contempt for the Constitution and our liberties. Their involvement in globalism, the NWO and silent totalitarianism. Thats why the only politician one can trust is Ron Paul!

Not really. It's not the threat of high levels of radiation that makes a "dirty bomb" dangerous, but the toxicity of the radiological contaminants once inhaled or ingested.
Posted by: Hollowpoint at September 09, 2011 02:29 PM (SY2Kh)
I have personally walked through areas contaminated in excess of 100,000 uCi/1002 cm which is much more than what you could expect to find after explosion of anything realistically available to the bogyman.

Alas, this day and age the paranoia isn't always unjustified. Consider the accidental admission by some British government puke a couple years ago that they were importing foreigners to replace the natives. The US govt has done plenty of shady, ill advised things over the years as well. Hell, the current president put a guy who supports child molestation in place as the "safe schools" czar.
It's like the old joke - the question is not whether I'm paranoid, but rather - am I paranoid enough?
It takes judgement to rein it in to just the right level, and I seldom blame people for thinking that something improbable is afoot.

Take your example of radium. When I was a kid in the 50s all the closks and watches were literally swimming in radium dials. Hell a big ben alarm clock had a ton of the shit in it. People would take these things apart when they quit working and scrape off the radium paint and use it to make cool glow in the dark shit.
They didn't think anything about it. But if a terrorist took a dozen of those old clocks from an antique shop now and scrapped them into a a bomb people would freak now.

The whole article is what I've been trying to say and many of you jumped all over me for it.
NYPD had 4 hours added to each shift. They are all over the city. To get into some building, what used to take 5 minutes, now takes 15. My friend left us at fashions night out last night and decided to go home to her parents and work from home today. It was a train arriving at 2 am and the doors opened and 40 cops were waiting on the platform and as she stepped out of the train, they all stepped in. Her mom waiting for her in the car said she watched as police car after police car silently drove up and parked and the cops went up and she worried about her daughter.

I like the scenario, but I contend that this attitude is the problem - the idea that it is somehow bad to fight and kill our enemies in the manner that inflicts upon them the most devestation. We have no moral obligation to let a single one of them exist, yet we act as if we need to coddle the bastards. We have to keep them alive and happy and well fed so they'll have all eternity to keep working on ways to end us. Fuck that. Nuke 'em. Twice. I'll throw a party and buy all the booze anybody can drink in celebration. I certainly will not hate myself, and certainly won't deserve to.

I don't think that they are worried about Pu. If the bad guys could get some Pu they could certainly find a few people to build a bomb. Blowing a few ounces of Pu into the air around a stadium or any other big crowd could be extremely dangerous. And there are other elements that could be nasty too. But, as you know, they are difficult to manufacture and difficult to handle.

I hate to say it, but we have to open ourselves to the possibility of innovative attacks and technologies, with amazing results.

I get that, but there's also the issue of the explosion itself- what might not start out as being "respirable" might just be after the high explosives go off. Even after the fact it would be difficult to determine exactly what the potential risks would be.
It might be difficult to construct a dirty bomb that covers a very large area and lots of casualties, but one shouldn't discount out of hand the potential health hazard, either.

I say this because back in the day when I was all into Alex Jones and his bullshit, I believed in that crap. Hell I ate it all up, FEMA camps, Operation CableSplicer, and GardenPlot, EO 113 (or whatever it was) the list goes on and on.
Anyway 1 day I read a "first hand report" from one of Alex Jone's staff about how he personally visited a FEMA camp and lo and behold the site was literally within 2 miles of where I live. So I finally worked up the courage to brave getting set upon by government goons in black helos, and went and visited it. You know what was there?

A tad dirty for my tastes, surprising to me when I went for the 1st time. The history is nice though.

We lived in Waltham (I was at Brandeis) and then Belmont (he was at the NBER) for three torturous, miserable years in the 90s. In fairness, my mom got and died of cancer during that time, plus we had some other things happen that contributed to the misery. But to be fair every New Yorker I've interacted with has been a mensch. I haven't visited NYC yet, on my bucket list once I'm employed again, so I can't judge the overall populaces against one another.
And Boston was part of my American history-nerd Honeymoon, loved that city too. The people were much friendlier than I expected too!
I have no problem with New Yorkers. They get a bad rap. And this is coming from a native Bostonian. The only problem with New York is Jets fans.
Now...you want rude, come to the DC metroplex. You'll get some rude. God I hate this place.

I lived in Boston for almost 5 years, as a student. I think that's the best way to experience the city. Go there for college, make friends, be broke most of the time, and find out how to have fun on a shoestring budget. I had a blast. I've visited the city dozens of times since I graduated (20+ years ago), but I never had as much fun visiting as I did as a student living there. The city for fun-fun? N-Y-C.

Soooo.... random sweeps. Stoping people randomly. Checking IDs as they just try to go about their business...
Check points.... searching vehicles...
The slippery slope of 'Reasonable' just took a lonnnggggg slide if this does not worry even the supposedly Conservative crowd here.
First they searched me at the Airport, even though they never found ANY Terrorists that way...
Then the Train Stations...
Now the Roads...
And no knock searches... where they can search if they 'think' evidence may be being destroyed...
Lets see... how does that saying go? Those who give up Liberty in the name of Saftey, will soon have neither?

That said, if I wanted to construct a "dirty bomb" which would set off Geiger Counters in order to panic the public, all I'd need is a case of black powder and a case of lantern mantles (also known as thorium gas mantles.)
Lantern mantles make Geiger Counters go ballistic.

I don't even know who the fuck "bilderbergers" are supposed to be, but lets face it without 90% of the world's population there wouldn't be any economic activity to make the elites wealthy and without wealth there's no way to really control any population. Any police state is pretty much doomed once economics come into play. Honestly do these conspiracy fucks really think the world's richest people really want to run the global economy into the ground? All that would do is make them LESS powerful and wealthy than they already are.

Orange is just not my color.
Seriously though, I think the only truth there is to the Fema Camp stories.....is the fact that after Katrina, Fema actually did go out and secure some locations for future temporary housing. Like for after disasters.
There was a WSJ article about it, several years ago.....There were some pics of some dormatories, etc....with chain link fencing around it for security, for the temporary residents, not to keep them prisoner.

yeah, that's a big part of it. Also, though, moving from directly Chicago (which I really grew to love - we lived there when I was doing grad work and had just gotten married as well) to Boston (which I expected to love, but didn't) was also a big part of it. I'm a gregarious person (duh!) but it freaked the Bostonians out. They'd say "you're not from around here, are you?"
And everyone seemed unnecessarily tense considering Boston is tiny compared to Chicago and, let's face it, not really that important compared to DC or NYC or other cities with a rep for having tense residents. I always found myself asking "when in heck are you all going in such a rush?"
Plus, the restaurants were inferior to Chicago (except for Dali in Sommerville), particularly when it came to service.
Plus, it felt more racially segregated and kind of "old money" segregated compared to what I was used to growing up and in Chicago. Mr Y-not never had to dress for dinner in Chicago. If your money was green, you were in.

The lack of a 24 hour IHOP and the loss of the Rat destroyed much of the character of Kenmore Square. The new bus station, subway renovations, reconstruction of the roadway , and widened sidewalks have made the area much more aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate. But now there's fewer reasons to actually want to go to Kenmore.

Dirty bombs are a threat, but I thiink they are not quite as bad as the MBM makes them out to be. Not that preparedness to the MBM level (and maybe then some) is not a good idea, but fear at their level is probably not.
The detonation of a 20kg dirty bomb (20kg semtex, plus dirty additives) is basically the explosion of 20kg of semtex. Maybe slightly worse, because most/all of the dirty additives are metals, and usually in powder form, so they might burn easily. Strontium, for example, is an additive in fireworks, for certain colors.
The upside to this is that if the powdered metal burns, it forms an oxide, or a carbonate, or something. Still problematical, but the resulting molecule is physically larger ... slightly easier to trap in a filter, like a HEPA filter from an AC unit, or a cheap surgical mask. Not that you should run your central AC unit after a dirty explosion, or that a surgical mask will prevent inhalation, rather, such items should cut your exposure way down.
Cleanup in Manhattan might not be as tough as we think. How thorough does it have to be? A few grams of Co-60, 4 stories up, might only be a threat to people in the office. Having teams with geiger counters scan each office in each building is time consuming, but do-able. A lead plate on the inside of the building might be enough to provide temporary protection.
The ability to wash buildings has been around for a few decades, and I expect that to be done. A low pressure wash, to get the contamination to run off to a containment system on the street, followed by a scan, might be more than enough. Many shopping centers use a vacuuming service to clean their parking lots. Vacuum, scan & mark, repeat. It will cost money, but the problem goes away.
Moving away from Manhattan-esque targets does increase the cost of cleanup, but there are only a few that are worth the effort. A strike in PedX-ing, Iowa, seems real unlikely.

They approach a fence and right in front of them hear a rattle.....they look down and see a HUGE eastern diamondback rattler (husband says it was as wide as his forearm). He and the friend jump up on a platform and the snake comes under the fence towards them and slithers under the platform they're standing on. Husband says the thing was at least six feet long.

Cmon on down. We can get Vic drunk.
The suburb I live is full of Yankees. You wouldn't be too brash for this area. Heck, only 1 in 4 people I encounter on a daily basis even have a mild southern accent. It really depends on where you live. The coastal areas have alot of transplants.

The way I do it is by shutting down my dsl router for a while and then logging back in to my ISP. Then I get a different IP (usually depends on the amount of traffic at the node/server. Then Bingo! New Hash.
At least that's how it's worked before.
YMMV and will depend on how, to who, to what, you connect to the internet and over what equipment.

Well, I'll do everything humanly possible. Unfortunately, we barbers aren't gods. You know, medicine is not an exact science, but we are learning all the time. Why, just fifty years ago, they thought a disease like yours was caused by demonic possession or witchcraft. But nowadays we know that Jane is suffering from an imbalance of bodily humors, perhaps caused by a toad or a small dwarf living in her stomach.

#343 If BU ever gets rid of the parking lot on Deerfield Street, the Citizen's Bank building, and the old Holiday Inn on the outbound side of the square, there'll probably be enough new places to attract people to the square
Oh, that's happening as we speak, my friend. Go check out the corner for Deerfield and Bay State, just 50 yards from Kenmore Square. BU is building a massive new Student Services Center right there. With that...the parking on Deerfield will disappear.
That Holiday Inn is a BU dorm now, and I think I remember its in the 10 year plan for demolition, as they build more dorm space out toward Nickerson Field. I also remember the entire Engineering School that backs up to the Mass Pike is due for complete demo and rebuild.

Jane, if you don't have EmergenC for your cold: get some at the pharmacy (packets come in box, mix with 8oz water or OJ), the B-12 in this stuff makes you feel better. And, garlic, lots of raw garlic, in chicken soup. I know this sounds revolting for sinus clog, but it works: Hot V8 juice with garlic (heat V8 in microwave 1 minute, add 1 clove raw garlic and a dash of Tabasco). You will either die or breathe easier.
In other news, I battled crime on our island today. Yesterday three tough looking thugs (one with dreds) were going door to door selling "security systems." Every house in our 30 home HOA has security systems. We are also in a "no solicitation" posted neighborhood and "neighborhood watch," not that either sign do much good, but whatever. Anyway, I did not answer door when hulk rang, but spied on him and saw two others. All were carrying "ADT" notebooks but were wearing street thug clothes. Another neighbor came over and said he'd told this hulky woman he was not interested and it would be reported to the sheriff's office. Lots of "this seems weird" for here kind of thoughts. So, today, I call the national ADT and found out this is one giant scam to a) see who is home, and b) find out who has alarm systems if you are stupid enough to talk to them. And there are plenty of old naive people in Florida. So I called the sheriff and they are hoping to find these potential burglers. I did wonder if this was the type of jobs Obammy was supporting for the private sector. Seriously, the Internet says these "gangs" are like gypsies and travel around the states. ADT does not go door to door and national lady said they have uniforms and company cars. So, I hope I busted their sorry selves today. They were bold enough to even have business cards (which looked crappy). Beware.

@481:
ADT, real ADT are fine and we have them, and have had them for years.
This was a bogus scamming company pretending to install ADT, and had "ADT Certified Dealer" on the bogus business card the thug left near my front door. So instead of calling the numbers, and dred guy gave his cell phone (!) I called ADT . ADT searched and said they were not affiliated with this company and were going to alert corporate. Lady said she'd had another call from somewhere in Florida with an upset lady about same scam. I think this is a bogus marketing scheme who hire thugs (per Internet) without background checks. They were bold, I know that, and acted very huffy when told to leave neighborhood by one of our neighbors. Full disclaimer: we live in a 97% non-union area and they stood out in this neighborhood. I was freaked out to see this guy on my porch.
Call the Better Business folks about the new company.

I have a very serious question: Could he, say, pardon every federal prisoner convicted of a drug crime? Or would the logistics of doing so make it impossible?

I was okay with ADT. I had Brinks first. They were bought by Broadview and then by ADT. I had a low battery alarm that cause the damn thing to beep every 15 seconds. I called to get the battery replaced (bad placement, I wasn't going to fix it). It was going to take two weeks before they could get someone out to my house. I was temporarily able to disable the beeping for 24 hours at a time for a couple of days. Then, the time between beepings got shorter (like 2-3 hours). It was waking me up. I work 50-60 hours a week and I go to school full-time plus (5 classes last semester - because I'm insane). I called ADT and begged them to get someone out. The gal I talked to thought she could get someone more quickly but her supervisor wouldn't approve it. Twice a night, I was awakened by the damned beeping and it didn't rate a faster than two weeks service call? I was done.

No boyfriend, very limited social life, excel spreadsheets to track all assignments/exams (so I don't miss anything), fortunately don't need much sleep, study for an hour every morning before work and during lunch at work, and (thank God) most of my classes are online so that I can watch lectures and take tests on my timeline. My weekends are pretty much school, school, more school, and a bit of gardening. Oh, and gin. Lots and lots of gin. I have a 3.81 GPA right now and I'm pissed. I tanked on my technical risk management final last semester and ended up with a C. Damn it.

Found the first one on my way to carpool kids home on 9/12/01. Tiny kitten ran in front of my car, I pulled over, it jumped under the wheel well, and the rest is history. She was four weeks old and had been severely abused. Her intestines had collapsed her lung, from what the vet said, was a stomp or throwing the little thing against a wall. She became D'oh Boy's "baby."
Second kitteh we adopted after we put down the second of our 18 year old kittehs our boy had grown up with. He picked her out with his best buddy from Chicago, who was visiting us, and is blind.
With our only child facing deployment, those kittehs keeps us both company. While I was feeling like crap the past couple of days, one of the girls stayed with me all day.
One reminds me of 9/11, and the other one reminds me of our boy. He loves them both.

Thank you. That really does mean a lot.
I had my kids when I was fairly young so I didn't get my degree when I was the age most people get their degrees. I had a Eureka moment when they were in middle school (and I was going to school full-time while working). I knew I'd never recapture the time with them so I stopped going to school. In hindsight, I should have just taken one class a semeseter but I was young and stupid. Now, I'm playing catch up in a big way. My customer is trying to in-source me and it happens a lot faster if I have a degree. That's why I'm so aggressively taking classes. I'm on track to graduate in May.

Ours are de-clawed with lasers. No cutting, no stitches, and you do it when the kittens are spayed/neutered.
Regular declawing is awful. They amputate the kittie's toes.
Our kitties will live out their lives indoors (enjoying a nice screened porch with views of several bird feeders). They were babies when they lost their claws, still want to scratch (we keep a scratching post for them to rub on), but they don't soil anything and are very clean and neat.
My NYC sister-in-law has been bringing her dog to my in-laws in ATL for years. It walks in EVERY.SINGLE.YEAR and takes a dump or pees on the carpet. And it does the same thing EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. It's a retarded Scottie and everyone brags about its blood lines. GAH.

I think pets are sort of like kids. They can be incredibly destructive and disruptive. You'll almost have to design your life around them. A cousin of mine who decided she wants animals in her life got all leather furniture (cats ruin upholstery) and hard floors -- wood and tile rather than carpet.
Srsly, that's what you have to do unless they're going to live outside.

I quit going down there except after a hard freeze, and still only go to the lake with brothers, husband or sons. One brother does not hesitate to practically kill snakes with his bare hands (husband is a Yankee and not sure he has this skill). On the upside the hardcore indoctrination doesn't start until college...I was just got lucky and ended up in a super progressive HS. It taught me how to be subversive and I blend in well with liberals (comes in handy in CA). I actually got less indoctrination at UCLA than my hs. I don't know if anyone else when to an HS as liberal as mine - it was so bad they actually had to tone down the program.

But later, when Call asks Gus about the motto, he jumbles it comically, not even pretending to know what it means. Having established that, McMurtry gains nothing by adding a spelling error that only Latin scholars would catch. Likewise, it seems unlikely—as other readers have suggested—that the substitution was simply a typographical error. Although the substitution is ungrammatical, "vivendo" means "living," turning the phrase "A grape changes when it sees other grapes" to "A grape is changed by living with other grapes;" or, since we are not really concerned with grapes after all, to "We are changed by the lives around us." The author's alteration takes on greater significance in light of the larger themes in the narrative that deal with how one leads one's own life and with living itself. These themes are also indicated in the remark made by Gus to Call: "It ain't dyin' I'm talkin' about...it's livin'."

that is how academia works.
you have to remember, the people that are hired by the university/college, don't come from the surrounding community. about 95% of them are going to be liberal no matter what.
if they work at a college that is in a conservative community, they don't even attempt to mingle with the community; they stick with their own insular crowd and commiserate with each other, thereby radicalizing each other further.
in this sense it's probably worse to take college classes in a conservative area.

Beware.

I'll always wonder if faster thinking would have sent helicopters with rescue baskets to save those people. Once in a while I remember about one young woman that could not bring herself to jump before being roasted alive, until another victim told her he would hold her hand as they jumped together.
I really hope the monsters that did that are in Hell right now.

I didn't watch the morning news at that time. I was going in to work late because I was on hold with my doctor's office. The musak was replaced with news reports. They reported the first plane. I turned on the news and saw the second plane hit. I knew it wasn't an accident. While still freaked, I drove to work. When I arrived, the news reported the Pentagon had been hit. I've been at the Pentagon. I saw the courtyard. I knew that if we were ever attacked, that would be Ground Zero. I've never been more scared in my entire life. That day change me. Probably not in a good way.

For sane people this would be a call to war. For self-serving lickspittle politicians, not so much. The very foundations of Western civilization have been under attack for years and we, as a people, still don't quite get it. Our politicians don't get it either, but theirs is an ignorance of omission since it would be work to call out the islamic roots and identity of the terrorists and then follow that up with action.

What's so incredibly frustrating about September 11th, is that most of the Western world refused to learn from that day. Maybe it's a combination of political correctness, fear of inciting Muslims that have reached large population percentages in our populations, fear of facing that we are at war with an ideology that wants us dead, or just the decline of our civilization.
