America is an exceptional nation. It is exceptional because of its history of success, itÂ’s resiliency through tough times, and the tenacity of the American people to keep America strong, independent, and free. We refuse to let our problems fester any longer. We refuse to continue on this fast track to socialism. We refuse to become the United States of Europe.
Sigh
Like watching the mist evaporate from the shining city on a hill.

His family is attractive, and I'd love to see/know more about his pretty, petite wife. How nice it would be to have a FLOTUS without a frown and a staff of 25 to dress her.

Having just moved here, I'm no expert (Vic knows better), but I think Cain could do pretty well here in SC for a variety of reasons.
I'm still not sold on his viability, but I do like the fact he seems to get better every time I see him as far as interviews and speeches go.

Perhaps and I agree to a certain extent but from what I understand of Cain so far, he is precisely the type of candidate we've been wanting. Not a career politician, an experienced and successful business man, etc.
The lack of any political experience as a negative factor is clear down at the bottom of the list, for me.
Posted by: ErikW at May 21, 2011 09:55 AM (/VmpX)
I would prefer we keep Bachmann and DeMint where they are at rather than a warm spit job like VP. Since Coburn has gone all "tax increase" on us.

Cain is going to be a breath of fresh air in this race. IMHO, he's the first real, solid conservative in the field. He has good business experience, just enough political experience (like the old joke back home, "Have you been to college?" Answer: "Not enough to hurt." *rimshot*), he's a regular guy who's been in the public eye (or ear, with his talk show) so he's used to getting his point across, his platform is plainly spelled out (thanks for the link to it, Vic) and there aren't any skeletons rattling around in his closet. Even his statment that he wouldn't have a muzzie in his cabinet isn't getting to much criticizm (yet), that's a big plus for a lot of folk.
Also, it's not his "turn." See 2008 for that pathetic example.
And he's not SarahCuda. I'm willing to bet she'll endorse him if she decides not to run. He's the closest we can get to the perfect candidate as of today. Even the Head Ewok just might agree he's electable.
It's about time we had someone we can vote for, and not have to hold our noses (Juan McCain, I'm looking at your sorry ass).
All in all, since we're still here today, not too shabby. I'm not a Cainiac, but I'll consider him the front-runner until my other favs decide to run, like The Round Mound of Fiscal Soundness, or John Bolton's Mustache, or even SaraCuda.

Wrong. George Washington is the best example. Not the smartest guy, but he was the greatest leader. He knew to surround himself with the greatest minds there were (think Jefferson and Hamilton), and his leadership skills took over from there.
Posted by: rdbrewer at May 21, 2011 09:58 AM (/9ciG)
Careful now. Let's not set a precedent for proportional elections. The Dems would love that.
I'm not real worried about that. Dims will call for that, no matter how the GOP organizes its primaries.
The primary process should bring about the strongest possible candidate who best reflects the values of the party/base.
It should be balanced and long enough (no progressive states like Iowa having undue influence, nor big winner take all states helping the likes of a McCain) to produce a strong conservative candidate.

Mom: "I'm glad to hear that!"

Posted by: Fish the Impaler at May 21, 2011 10:10 AM (cwFVA)
As much as a despise this fact, it would be helpful for POTUS to have had experience dealing with a legislature.
I think, as a businessman, he'd be more inclined to say, "Here's what needs to be done, go do it. I expect a bill on my desk ready for me to sign by tomorrow."
Remember how quickly the ObamaCare bill was ready to go? Somebody had that bill already written, most of the time was spent twisting the arms of the few Dims who weren't radial, lefty progressives. I believe that there should be an effort like that already waiting in the wings to repeal OCare, the Dodd, financial bill, and everything else this adminsitration has passed against our will.
It's painfully evident to me that the cats in congress can be hearded. All it will take is a president with a mandate to undo the last four years.
Did I mention that I'm looking forward to adding conservatives to the House and taking the Senate with a super-majority? Don't laugh, it can be done.
I think the Defeat of Obama will be as historic as his election, except in the other direction. We've done it before, there are only a few in the squishy middle who need to be persuaded. They'll follow the biggest crowd since they are unable to think for themselves. We make enough of a racket about Obama, they'll come over to our side without too mcuh trouble.
It. Will. Happen.

Yes it is, and here's the kicker. A lot of the politicians and shakers and movers in Beltway politics are not very smart, but have a lot of money and political clout (meaning popular backing) behind them. It distorts every value judgement, and reality is more subjective than objective. A rational, intelligent man or woman can get clobbered for just being rational and intelligent.
In corporate politics, usually most of the players have above average intelligence, sometimes very above average IQ. And their enemies don't leak dirt about them to be read by the masses in the New York Times or the Washington Post.
Herman's tough, but he will have to survive a savage campaign by the media against him. It will be worse for him than it was for Sarah, but I think he can take it. He is tough.

If Herman Cain is tainted for his loss in Georgia, then Bill Clinton must be the same for his failure to be reelected to the governorship of Arkansas in 1980. Well, unless there is a double standard for liberals who become more focused and nuanced or pussified after their loss?

Losing in a primary to a relatively friendly opponent in a conservative state isn't.
Look in fairness, no one is really prepared to run for President. So I'm picking nits here a bit. But from a skeletons in the closet stand point/ ability to take the heat in the middle of a spirited campaign, Cain is untested.
We shall see.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Spent the morning at Hilliard Bradley HS watching District Track Meet - my son runs. Some really great races today - two senior rivals raced in the 3200 meter run and were sprinting for the finish line. 9:23 for 3200 m race. A state record for HS was set in the pole vault. A great morning to watch the young 'uns.

If we are going to truly address the many serious issues in this country, we cannot settle for anything less that unparalleled exceptionalism in a POTUS.
Let's not make perfect the enemy of the good. Washington was exceptional in his time in great measure because his time was exceptional. Never before in human history had a government been constructed from scratch with the principles enshrined in our Constituion. Washington was indeed exceptional, but that was a rare time, and he wasn't the only exceptional architect of our republic. They all were.
The world has never seen anything like it before, nor since. Today, the world is a different place, and American society is vastly different from from that in the 1700's. Cain is as close as we can get to a true statesman: one who has a clear vision of the course we need to set and who will not compromise his views for the sake of political expediency, or to be "liked." His inner strength will overcome any of his newness to the office. I don't think he'll allow himself to be bamboozled by anyone.

Herman is a fun, nice little candidate. But he's not viable. Its a side-show.
-Clueless
How many in the would-be candidates have supported cap & trade, TARP, variations of Obamacare, and/or the stimulus? Selecting a candidate because of "viability" gives you leaders like Schwarzenegger... who gave us The Global Warming Solutions Act which is driving out all manufacturers from California. And 30+ billion dollars of debt. And an ENTIRELY Democrat-run state government.
We don't need an Obama-clone with an "R" after the name. The D.C. elites didn't think Reagan was viable either. They never think a real conservative is viable. The D.C. elites don't have a great track record of success. Herman Cain does.

It's 90+ degrees in Juno Beach, Florida, and Elvis had a great romp on the beach attempting to hump a leashed dog belonging to a nice looking middle aged woman. She admonished me for not using a leash, and I told her that Elvis was attracted to Penelope because of her beauty. She said "screw you." Bitch!

Unlike with Romney, this was just a statement, not anything actually enacted into law.
What would it take, what sort of mea culpa, for T-Paw to make amends on that and get those who find AGW a crock to be more favorable to him as the nominee?

--That does not bother me. If I were a shrewd, conniving SOB and wanted to triangulate with the other side, that is not much different from what I'd do, since it is largely toothless. Now, T-Paw was probably a true believer and not as shrewd as I (heh), but that said, what could he do to win over the skeptics? If anything, the fact that he won an election in a Democrat "wave year" in a blue state without selling out as much as Romney seems a plus to me.

it concerns me a bit that he had Stage 4 cancer. that is not just "a lump".
His executive experience is stellar. It is hard to argue with that.
The fact that he's had a radio show for a long time is a bit troubling because you just know that someone is going to be dredging up all of those archives and pulling out some inflammatory or nonsense thing he said over a live mic for like 15 seconds over years and years of broadcast time, and use that to smear him in some unfounded way
overall I'm not sure how I feel about him - he is not my top choice but at this point I don't know who my top choice would be.

Well, I do think we need a bit of beta-male-ism in a candidate, just enough, so as not to scare away too many people who might be inclined to vote for him. People tend not to want to vote for people perceived as crazy & nuts and that is how pure alpha-male-type people can come off as sometimes.

Contrary to your conclusion, I think that it is imperative that we find an equal calibre of person to our founders for today's government.
I agree, but I haven't seen anyone like that emerge from the current crop of Repubs. Cain is close, but he's a far cry from what I see as the perfect candidate, as do you.
But we must fight with what we have, instead of what we'd like to have. It's unfortunate that the office isn't attractive to who we really need to occupy it, since they know they'd be raked over the coals by the MFM, lied about, misquoted and taken out of context with wild abandon.
Just out of curiosity, who would you recommend? It could be anyone, inside or outside of politics. I'd have to give it some thought myself, so I'm not ready to offer my own recommendation right now. But I'd like to hear yours.

That's a negative for me, but not a deal breaker. Pawlenty's support for crap and tax IS a deal breaker because it places him in in one or more of these camps:
