— Ace On one hand, I didn't know that either.
On the other hand, I'm not being paid to run this war.
The deputy commander of NATO forces in Libya acknowledged Friday that the alliance struck rebel tanks outside the eastern oil town of Brega a day earlier but blamed the deadly incident on a lack of communication from the rebels.Rear Adm. Russell Harding said "it would appear that two of our strikes yesterday may have resulted in the deaths of a number of TNC forces," referring to the Transitional National Council, the rebels' de facto government. Doctors said that at least five people were killed in the Thursday morning strike, the second friendly fire incident in less than a week involving NATO forces and the rebels battling Libyan strongman Muammar Gadhafi.
"I'm not apologizing," Harding told reporters in Naples, Italy. "The situation on the ground was extremely fluid and remains extremely fluid. And up until yesterday we had no information that the TNC or the opposition forces were using tanks."
What the hell.
And if you think that's dumb, how about a general proposing US ground troops in Libya?
Asked if the U.S. would provide troops, Ham said, “I suspect there might be some consideration of that. My personal view at this point would be that that’s probably not the ideal circumstance, again for the regional reaction that having American boots on the ground would entail.”
Um, no.
As I wrote before I had counted on Obama's feckless (if inconstant) pacifism to keep him from making the same mistake as LBJ and deciding his ego was on the line and so better men than him should die to prove how "tough" he is.
I'm not sure of that anymore.
This general really should get his head on straight. We cannot piss away good American troops' lives everywhere. We cannot and must not put troops in another civil-war situation.
If the answer is stalemate, so be it. If Obama wanted to cleanly win the war he missed his opportunity by delaying so long to rain airstrikes on Qadaffy's mercenaries. If it's now to be a divided state, then so be it.
Who the hell cares? If Qadaffy acts up we bomb the crap out of Tripoli.
What is this absurd sentimentalist regard for world maps with countries that have constant borders? Do we care if Libya breaks up into West Libya and East Libya? Is learning a new contour on a map so difficult for us?
No more using soldiers just to spare the lives of foreigners.
Yes, it would be better if the rebels won, but they're not strong enough for that. All we can do is keep Qadaffy from winning.
And that's all we should do.
By The Way: I don't think there's any question that putting ground troops into a live war would require a Congressional resolution.
That's full commitment. That's solemn war.

Then we give them the Close Air Support. They're still not winning. I've seen it mentioned that they seem to do most of their firing into the air, and that as soon as Kadhaffi forces show up, they turn tail and run.
Now, did these proclivities simply hide themselves with the rest of the world made up its mind whether or not to help, or was this media malfeasance?
I ask because several pundit types (IIRC even Ace, but I could be mis-remembering there) were basically on the side of military action as long as a limited scope was all that was necessary to topple Kadhaffi. It looks, now, like that was incorrect. So, was that incorrect because that information wasn't available, or was it incorrect because that information was maliciously hidden?
Did the MBM lie us into an unjustified, illegal, undeclared war?

They might have exaggerated. They had their hard-ons about Tunisia and Egypt, and thought Libya would be another case just like that, but now Obama can show how tough he is.
And ace was in favor of limited air support action. You know 2 weeks before it actually started when it looked like the rebels had the upper hand and might oust Kaddafi. I think he was in agreement with the other co-bloggers that when it started it was way too late.

Yes, my point isn't that they were all hyped-up super excited. I kind of get that. I kind of was, too. I'm specifically talking about the rebels' lack of coordination, lack of fire discipline, and other such strategic nightmares. These are things that should have been seen even in the earliest days of the uprising. So were they just missed, or were they concealed?
And thanks for clarification on Ace's position. Though, really, that time was part of the "build up" to which I was referring.

What a clusterfuck.
What are our options now that Obama has come out and said that Qaddafi must go?
We can eat crow and accept a cease fire along with a solemn (and useless) promise from Qaddafi to kill fewer civilians, leaving him in power.
Otherwise, we go all in and target Qaddafi and his family personally along with any military assets he has for the express purpose of regime change. This would be difficult without boots on the ground.
Or we could just accept that the rebels don't have what it takes to win, so we declare "mission accomplished" and leave, having accomplished approximately nothing.

I agree with Ace here. Instead of providing material support early on when the rebels had the upper hand and momentum on their side, Obama waited until they started to lose before acting. Too little, too late.
I'm not saying air support was the right idea. . .I think Obama's original plan of staying the hell out was probably correct. But you can't fight a war kinetic military action half-assed. Its either you want to win and you're all in, or you don't bother.
Without a SERIOUS military commitment of boots on the ground (which I think nobody really wants), the longer we stay the worse it will get. Its certainly not clear to me exactly who the rebels are, or that they'll really be any better than Gadaffi.
I think its better for us to just say "mission accomplished" and get the hell out of there, and the sooner the better.

Actually, no.
The people we were supporting (Ahmad Shah Massoud for example) came to power after they overthrew the communist supported government.
They were in turn thrown out of power by the Taliban, which was supported, and possibly created by the ISI.
The remnants of Massoud's government became the Northern Alliance.
And in fact, a couple days before 9/11, bin Laden assassinated Massoud.

Yup. That's what happens when you trust a massive central government to be the sole carrier of arms...
That aside, we in the West have superweapons of power unimaginable in past ages. In the old days we'd have been using them. Give the ancient crusaders neutron bombs, hydrogen bombs, nerve gas, bio-weapons, etc, and they'd not have set idle for long. The M.E. would be in good order by now. Our refusal to use our devestating power to annihilate those who attack us or threaten our way of life is a sign of unforgiveable weakness.
We'll suffer greatly for it in the end.

Well, that's the kind of performance you get when you cut someone's pay, eliminate weapons upgrades, and outsource your wars to Belgium. It's the equivalent of lead paint in the drywall.

Exactly. And the word "inferior" is a perfect choice. Their beliefs, their way of life, ARE grossly, shockingly, and unquestionably inferior. Debased. Depraved. Unworthy to continue to exist.

According to my Meyers-Briggs personality profile, my positive solutions to conflicts are likely to be realistic, logical, practical and pragmatic, feasible, well-organized, and above all, results focused.
However, I probably will not affirm someone else's (Libyan) feelings and emotions and may unilaterally decide upon a solution and run the risk of alienating other (Dems). Also, I have a tendency to direct and give orders to fix a problem rather than listen (to nattering nabobs of negativism).

1. India (1.7Billion in 2050, 1.2B today. only 350M in 1950)
2. China (1.4B in 2050, 1.4B today, 550M in 1950)
3. US will be 3rd in 2050 w/ 420M
4. Indonesia (300M in 2050, 240M today, 80M in 1950)
5. Pakistan (300M in 2050, 170M today, 40M in 1950
6. Nigeria (280M in 2050, 150M today, 30M in 1950)
Nigeria will break up. No way the Muslim North and Christian South stay together. Pakistan could easily fracture into tribes. So could Indonesia. India is more an empire than a country, with huge divisions of race, tribe, language and religion. The US faces a non-trivial risk from Mexican separatists in the southwest, but it seems manageable. Hawaiian separatists probably have a better chance. That said, I think there's a decent chance America adds states, if not territories - especially if Canada ever dissolves. We could add Alberta and British Columbia easily - one red state, one blue state.
The population explosion among sub-saharan African, middle-easterners, and south asians is still on-going and will change the balance of power in the world.

Actually, the Justice Department letter makes it clear that Obama ordered the decision.
After careful consideration, including review of a recommendation from me, the President of the United States has made the determination that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act ("DOMA"), 1 U.S.C. § 7, as applied to same-sex couples who are legally married under state law, violates the equal protection component of the Fifth Amendment. Pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 530D, I am writing to advise you of the Executive Branch's determination and to inform you of the steps the Department will take in two pending DOMA cases to implement that determination.

I don't buy that. Congress could pass a law calling for the seizure of all private firearms, or to remove minority children from their homes, or outlawing private political assemblies. Are you saying that the military would be bound to enforce them, even if it believed them to be unconstitutional or immoral?

IMO, the good general was answering the question as if it were asking what it might take to get this straightened out. Not that it would be a good idea. "Consideration" means the planners are paying attention to contingency plans for the contingency. That's their job.
My father had a fraternity brother who, in WW II, was on the planning staff for the invasion of Spain, should Franco throw in with Hitler or Hitler were to occupy Spain. Just in case.
Tanks look like tanks from the air. Also from up close. The issue is ground-air commo. There was none.

I don't follow your logic. DOMA is the law of the land as we speak, and as such, the Federal Gov. which includes the Military therefore does NOT recognize same sex marriage and the benefits that come from sam sex marriage. And as of today, those are the facts.
What's so hard? The President has declared that he believes DOMA is unconstitutional, and thus by definition NOT the law of the land.

inclined to believe that this was no
accident, either.
Given that we now know so many of the "rebels" we're fighting for pledge allegiance to Al Qaeda & can't be trusted, it was either 1) strategically very wise or 2) a fortuitous screwup that NATO applied some random kinetic action on those stolen tanks now lest they be used against Western forces later.

In the late 50s early 60s when they were building the subdivision I grew up in, the city leaders were apparently entranced with regard for another rebel leader fighting against a dictator nobody liked. They named the major road through the middle of it after the leader of the rebels.
Its still named Castro Lane to this day.

I have to disagree. The split would be a worst case scenario.
Two countries with what would become long standing animosity, lowered standards of living (islamist breeding ground, yes, worse than now), and a trickle of oil where once there was something approching a regular output.
A split would be uber-bad.
