— Ace It's a mere $43 million this time, so, you know, don't sweat it. Obama wastes that much cash in about eight minutes.
Massachusetts company that received a $43 million Energy Department loan guarantee last year filed for bankruptcy Sunday, a step certain to fuel criticism of federal green energy financing in the wake of the solar company SolyndraÂ’s collapse.Beacon Power Corp., which develops energy storage systems, filed for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware.
As you know, Obama has ordered a 60 day review of the loan processes at DoE, to find out if the correct procedures were followed, without favoritism to connected companies, and with due diligence for the taxpayers' dollars.
Like me, I'm sure you are eagerly awaiting the conclusions of this report, and completely at a loss as to what it will say.
Whoops: Another bankruptcy, this one of a company which would supposedly deliver high-speed broadband to remote rural areas.
The Bush Administration actually approved the loan for this company, Open Range. But this might be a Tale of Two Cronies, with a new crony favored as a new administration comes to town -- the FCC turned down Open Range's request for an extension (to give it time to correct its previous problems) but they were turned down.
The FCC’s handling of the matter has come under scrutiny by lawmakers partly because the agency promoted a similar venture called LightSquared about the same time it was turning its back on Open Range. Critics of the FCC have accused the agency of favoring LightSquared because it is backed by Democratically connected hedge fund financier Philip Falcone.“There is clearly the perception of favoritism,” said Tim Farrar, an independent analyst at TMF Associates. Farrar said his consultancy has no financial interests in LightSquared or Open Range’s venture. A similar charge was levied by Globalstar in a recent letter to the FCC.

A company in MA that makes "green" Li-ion batteries is moving to China. The CEO explains why:
"China is becoming the No. 1 market in clean tech, specifically in electric vehicles. It's the combination of financial support from the government, very eager and aggressive Chinese investors, and the fact that it's the biggest market in the world."
Wonderful.

Sen Orrin Hatch, vocal critic of the Obama administration's backing of a DOE loan guarantee to solar manufacturer Solyndra, pushed for more than $20 million in government funding for a bankrupt clean energy firm in his home state of Utah.
Hatch aides told USA TODAY earlier this month that the Republican lawmaker had never pushed for taxpayer money to be used for Raser Technologies, which operated a geothermal power plant in southern Utah and also developed hybrid plug-in vehicles. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in April, and recently re-emerged as a restructured company known as Cyrq Energy.
But on Friday, Hatch spokesman Matthew Harakal said that after an internal audit following publication of the USA TODAY story on Hatch's support for Raser, the Utah senator's office found that Hatch actually requested seven earmarks for more than $20 million from 2006 to 2008 to help fund research and development projects for the automotive wing of the company. None of the requests were funded, Harakal said, and he noted that the earmark requests only went to the automotive branch of the company—which was spun off by Raser before the company filed for bankruptcy in April.

1. We have confirmed that the administration followed procedure when making these loans. It seems funny that I have to remind the Republican party that business involves financial risk.
2. We have found deviations that can be traced back solely to a Mister Skaip Gote, that allowed these erroneous loans to go through.
Take your pick.

You may want to highlight how LightSquared wasn't just a Dem-favored company but, in fact, a company which Obama had been an early investor in and his administration had pressured military brass to perjure themselves on whether their operations would potentially disrupt the GPS system.

This is instructive as to part of the reason "green energy" doesn't work on a large scale - it is too damn dilute. You need to devote large tracts of land and resources only to elk out a small bit of energy.
