— DrewM Alrighty then.
Several administration officials held a classified briefing for all senators on Thursday afternoon in the bowels of the Capitol building, leaving lawmakers convinced President Barack Obama is ready to attack Libya but wondering if it isn't too late to help the rebels there....Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) told reporters that he expected the military operations to be run out of Sicily, where NATO Base Sigonella and U.S. Naval Air Station Sigonella are located.
"I know we have naval assets that are some distance away, so this would have to be U.S. Air Force Europe that would have the majority load for the time being, if the order is given," said Kirk.
And what exactly are we fighting for in Libya? According to the UN resolution adopted yesterday, to protect civilians and get a ceasefire.
Are we in this to overthrow the Gadaffi regime and hang him high? Maybe, maybe not. The resolution is open to political interpretation. If we can't kill him and the rebels can't overthrow him, then what? Are we going to send in ground troops to grab him on War Crime charges like we did with various thugs in the Balkans and Somalia?
These may well be worthy goals but it seems this is the kind of thing that should be laid out before you start dropping bombs on people's heads. Once you do that, failure either isn't an option (and you escalate until you win like in the Balkans) or you suffer the consequences of being ineffective (like we did in Somalia).
What if Kadaffi follows through on his promise of a ceasefire before the bombs start dropping? I doubt he will but if he does, do we say, "Oh. Um, great. Let's call that a win and head home"? Or do we need to boost the rebels up in their drive to overthrow him by providing air cover for their offensive?
Again, what exactly are we signing up for and how we will know it when we see it? Seems this is the kind of thing you layout before you commit American troops to their 3rd war in a Muslim nation, not after you've committed troops to the battle.
I'm not demanding an "exit strategy" like silly liberals do. On the other hand, I think honestly laying out the goals of a military campaign is a vital part of making the decision to go to war in a democracy. Speaking of which, will Obama submit this little adventure for congressional approval?
It seems there are an awful lot of unanswered basic questions. For a guy who complained we recklessly went into Iraq (after 6 months or more of debate and preparation) he seems to be running off pretty quickly into a French led, UN sponsored African adventure. I'm not sure much good can come from that combination.
Another question: What's our national interest here? As best I can tell, it's putting two in Qadaffie's forehead. We owe him that many. There should be no expiration date on national vengeance. "We never forget" is something wannabe enemies should factor into their decision making process. But I haven't heard Obama make that (or any) case.
Beyond that, what? Protecting the rebels is nice but not our problem. I was more amiable to the idea when they were on the outskirts of Tripoli three weeks ago. Now they have a long way to go to get back there. Are we flying top cover for that?
Well, I'm sure it will buy us plenty of good will in the Muslim world. You know like Kuwait, Bosnia and Somalia did before 9/11.
You know how you can tell there's no definable American interest involved (beyond killing Gadaffi on general principles)? The UN, the Euros and a guy like Obama are for it.

Big mistake; Thinking liberals oppose war just because they say they do. What they actually want is a devalued US, taking a back seat to the UN and EU. So just as long as the US has to sit at the kiddy table he's happy.

While Bush did go through Congress as if it was a DOW, indeed it would have been better if he had formally gotten a declaration of war.
The more sensible left raised this point with Iraq - so now the question is will they give their man-god a pass in Libya?

OK, donning the tinfoil fedora for a second.
Iraq is winding down, Afghanistan...theoretically in sight.
You have rather fell plans for America, not popular among the largest portion of the armed forces.
Do you really want a large number of combat-hardened veterans around when you try to pull your Big One?
Not sure how much I believe it, but given the other patterns of this crew, it's food for thought...

That snark away, just saw Mrs. Clinton say that the goal was for Quaducky to be removed from power. Ok, lets see...Bush gets 17 UN resolutions before war and that is bad, odipstick gets 1 for a no fly zone and all of a sudden that means not "no libyan planes flying", it means a removal of the dictator.
Now I am all for some lead to the head of Q-duck, but I am trying to see the consistency here in their statements of Iraq vs. Libya.

Anybody who supports the UN - in any way - ought to be jailed, since such people are the greatest danger to civilized society that we face - even worse than the aggressive, violent, batshit insane muslim primitives.
We need to gain control of the oil fields in Libya (as the Libyans have proven, along with the rest of the arab/persian/muslim enemies of civilization) and let the Libyans beat the living shit out of each other. In fact, we should sell both sides lots of small arms to kill each other with.

We should have just attempted a strike to kill the Duck and his inner circle. This is a useless excercise, and for what? To possibly put a Muslim Bro'hood type regime in place and to qualm Europe's fears about where they'll get their precious oil from, perhaps staunch the flow of refugees to Europe so they don't have to make the tough choices? Because that's what I see the situation as now -- this has nothing at all to do with getting rid of a vicious despot ,or aiding democracy, or even helping innocent people from getting slaughtered.

Congressional leaders from both parties asserted today that the Administration had failed to consider their views adequately before ordering the air raid against Libya on Monday and that Congress should be consulted more closely before any future counterterrorist actions.
Senator Lowell P. Weicker Jr., a Connecticut Republican, said the military attack was ''no different than what Qaddafi had done'' in mounting terrorist operations against Americans. ''I don't want the United States at that level,'' he said.
In an interview, Mr. Weicker said he feared that the Administration was leading the country toward a series of violent confrontations in such places as Nicaragua and Angola, as well as Libya. He said: ''All of these things indicate a disjointed, incoherent foreign policy that could end up with something very real in the way of conflict.''
BTW - Former Sen. Weicker endorsed Obama in 2008, so -- awkward!

I'm quite sure that there's a revulsion in this White House that they might actually have to, like, engage in combat with a nation that the Reagan White House bombed, after all, isn't it an article of faith on the Left (even among those semi-converted leftists like Chris Hitchens) that anything Reagan did was ipso facto evil?

Just go to Rio and STFU.

Favorite Nation of Islam racist factoid -- Nation of Islam teaches that white people were created by an evil black scientist during 6,000 years of genetic experiments where he tried to create creature devoid of morality and decency and filled only with lies and evil. The lighter the skin the more evil the baby, so he bred blacks for 6,000 years -- killing off the darker offspring and mating the lighter skinned ones together until he killed the ideal soulless, evil, lying race of henchmen -- white people -- which he used to takeover the world from the noble, honest, good black man.

I want NOTHING, whatsoever, to do with ANY mission directed by the corrupt UN. They ignore ACTUAL genocide, and then want to get involved in this shit?
They don't have a fucking clue what they are doing, and all that will happen is our guys will get shot up, while having to use dummy bombs and carry unloaded weapons. I'm even pretending that we have a competent CinC, which we clearly do NOT.
Why is the left not going crazy over this? I thought we had no business interfering the other nations . Now we're back to 'wars are ok', right?

Now let's just parse that statement.
Yes, he will go to Rio. But STFU?
We wish. The man is a talker. Sort of like Castro, or Chavez.
Hmmm...

Revoke passports of any followers of the religion of pieces, deport the ones who are here, and never allow any back into the country would be a good start....10 years ago.

168 Heh, Nation of Islam sounds a lot like Black Liberation Christianity.
We're doing this for actual oil this time -- oil for Europe. I don't think we get any from Libya...hmmm, now who does? I had the answer just a moment ago...
We couldn't kill Ducky (without big diplomacy issues with our betters across the pond) while the Euros thought they could make deals with him; something seems to have changed -- now they want us to fight their freaking war for them (watch and see that they don't). It's the country known as Yugoslavia, with a twist of sweet sweet crude -- and knowing this president, a bit of Somalia thrown in as well. We're likely to get nothing from this folks -- except a __ing.
And just how much is this little adventure going to cost us? In lives and treasure?

Not only a red flag there, but the UN has never in its history been an asset or an ally to the US, and is most often the problem and not the solution.

Yeah ... they're about the same. Warmed over race-based marxism. In this way the Nation of Islam is very much in line with general islam. Black liberation theology is just the "Christianized" version of political islam.
This all makes sense. Rev Wright was a member of the Nation of islam before he became an America-hating, Western-hating black liberation scumbag. He drifted away from formal islam just as Barky did, but ended up in the same place ... with a Christianized version of mohammed's belligerent insanity - to scoot it in under the West's nose ... as if that was even necessary.

I think it speaks well for Ace that he's gathered a group of people who aren't in lockstep and gives us room to express that.

Their support of Islamic radicals is a bit funny since they themselves are a heretical sect that would be put to death in any Islamic country.
Actually the Nation of Islam is on the decline as Islam spreads in America. As more and more arab muslims immigrate to America they are running into the Nation of Islam and they don't like it one bit. Hard-core muslims take that bit about Muhammad being the final prophet very seriously. So when FakerKhan and gang say, yeah, there was another prophet born in 20th century America called Elijah Muhammad -- the Sunnis and Shiites start getting that itchy feeling in their stabbing hand.
Long term Nation of Islam won't grow past its tiny niche. Even now many of its adherents and potential recruits turn to "true" Islam for a more authentic experience.
Then again, a little heresy hasn't gotten in the way of the Mormons. ;-)

1. The UN charter specificaly prohibits the UN from intervening in the INTERNAL affairs of Member Nations.... Libya IS a Member Nation, and this IS an Internal Affair. UN is once more ignoring its own rules...
2. ANY American intervention in Libya is too late... we had a chance with a Carrier sitting off the Coast... and dithered until Quadaffi was able to reassert control over his armed forces.... this rebellion is done UNLESS actual Ground troops invade....
3. Yes, we should shoot Qadaffi... we should neutralize him with extreme prejudice... HOWEVER... the cupboard is bare... we could EASILY have put a couple of squadrons of F-22s in Sicily, and done a no fly zone EARLY... but we don't have enough F-22s (or tankers).... we would have to pull them off of Homeland Defense now... (thanks Obama...)...

For weeks, they were demanding military action against Libya and calling Obama a pussy for not doing so.
Most of us "called Obama a pussy" for not leading when leadership was needed, and early enough to make a difference.
...the tone has changed to how reckless it is to launch a third war against a Muslim country.
More accurately, how ironic it is that Obama is being rolled by events into a last-ditch military intervention, instead of using his oratorical superpowers to avoid it.

Then why don't you ask the President, and not us?
Posted by: HH at March 18, 2011 01:05 PM (6oDXl)
Obama has been exceedingly consistent. Anything that is stupid or hurts America is exactly what he does.
Posted by: Henry Harold Humphries - you can call me 'H' at March 18, 2011 09:09 AM (iRJ9J)
All of these concerns about a war against Libya are perfectly legitimate. But there wasn't much discussion of them until Obama decided to support military action. The talking points just did a 180. It seems sorta crass.
Posted by: RJ at March 18, 2011 01:09 PM (qDPnZ)
Hmmm... did you read earlier threads? I think I've been pretty consistant, and have been one of the dissenting views...
We had an opportunity to intervene, which is now gone IMO. In the first few days of the rebellion, Q's army was in disarray, and did not know who they were going to follow... which is why the Rebels did well. BUT, when neither America nor the rest of the West intervened, the backed who they saw as the 'Strong Horse'.... and remained loyal to Q...
As no unorganized military force ever really outnumbers an organized force... once the Qs military got its act together, this was done. The time to intervene was when the Miltary was making up its mind WHO to FOLLOW...
Now, any American intervention gives Islamists, and Q, the ability to make the Great Satan the outside threat which he can then use to weld the remnants of his power base together.

Yes, there were discussions. But we are now argueing that it is pretty much too late, as Mallamutt so eloquently posts above.
Going to rescue the Alamo on March 7, 1836, isn't a good choice.
Posted by: HH at March 18, 2011 09:23 AM (6oDXl)
Big question...
Does the Q now have a come to Jesus Mohamed moment??? Since he won't get support from the West any longer, will he now go get support from Iran and the Jihadists?
Posted by: Romeo13 at March 18, 2011 09:25 AM (NtXW4)
This isn't going to be just cruise missiles or bombs. I have pretty good reason to believe that we will see American boots on the ground unless Kadaffy breaks this insurrection soon.

Sorry, I don't buy that. No reason in hell for us to put troops on the ground over there.
Why would we?
Posted by: HH at March 18, 2011 09:31 AM (6oDXl)
Jugears dithered to long, and Quadaffy has already won through his inaction. At this point, we're just throwing a penalty flag and asking Daffy to walk the ball back ten yards. He's still on first down.
Posted by: Rod Rescueman at March 18, 2011 09:32 AM (QxGmu)
The danger now is that Obama has let the best moment pass us by, and is fighting only half-heartedly and for reasons of political positioning. I still think, in principle, opening up a front in a Muslim nation is worth it to be rid of a foe like Quaddafi and to avoid implicitly endorsing him. I just hope we go about it smartly and decisively, which is to say I'm likely to be disappointed.

Why would we?
I ask myself the same question. Just don't be surprised when it happens.
Ask yourself why Jugears went from (a) "We don't support a no-fly zone" to (b) "A no-fly zone is not tough enough." I wonder if his dithering was a bumbling and inept effort to stretch this out long enough to get assets in place.
As I said previously, my biggest fear is the mission creep that is inevitable when a Democrat is in the White House. It will start as one thing and morph into another.
And I do not support any involvement in Libya other than doing justice to Kadaffy.

So the attack on Libya was strictly humantarian not like Bush, who did it for other reasons,
Now sticking with this humanitarian theme when does the U.S. strike Iran, North Korea and China? I guess parts of Africa need to be added here as well.
Wake up people!
