Solyndra Insiders: Once We Got That Fat Loan, We Overspent Like Crazy
— Ace

Of the myriad problems with socialism, one is this: People take good care of their own money. They earned it, they sweated it. They are reasonably careful about how they dispose of it.

When bureaucrats have millions (even billions) that is nothing to them but numbers on a piece of paper, do they exercise the standard of care that people do with their own blood sweat & tears property?

No, they do not.

Former employees of Solyndra, the shuttered solar company that exhausted half a billion dollars of taxpayer money, said they saw questionable spending by management almost as soon as a federal agency approved a $535 million government-backed loan for the startup.

A new factory built with public money boasted a gleaming conference room with glass walls that, with the flip of a switch, turned smoky-gray to conceal the roomÂ’s occupants. Hastily purchased state-of-the-art equipment ended up being sold for pennies on the dollar, still in its plastic bubble wrap, employees said.

As the $344 million factory went up just down the road from the companyÂ’s leased plant in Fremont, Calif., workers watched as pallets of unsold solar panels stacked up in storage. Many wondered: Did we even need this new factory?

“After we got the loan guarantee, they were just spending money left and right,” said former Solyndra engineer Lindsey Eastburn. “Because we were doing well, nobody cared. Because of that infusion of money, it made people sloppy.”

The Washington Post makes news (I think) as regards the status of that second loan, for $469 million-- they say it was never approved.

We need to see those documents and emails, the ones concerning this second loan. Because I have a feeling they say something like: "This company is a bad risk and the first tranche of loans never should have gone out, let alone this second tranche."

24 The Washington Post makes news (I think) as regards the status of that second loan, for $469 million-- they say it was never approved.

I suspect that this is right because Solyndra blames the Dep't of Energy for its bankruptcy.

“As late as August, the company believed that existing investors and the DOE would come to a financing arrangement that would have secured the capital the company needed to achieve positive cash flow from operations,” Miller wrote. “The Company’s investors had offered a transaction pursuant to which the required capital would have been invested, however, the terms of such transaction were not acceptable to the DOE.”

25 Solyndra Deal Violates 'Fundamental Laws of Economics'

"Since the passage of the stimulus bill in 2009, the Department of Energy has issued $40 billion in new loan guarantees for renewable energy projects that might not otherwise have been commercially viable. In addition to Solyndra, Beacon Power and First Wind Holdings offer examples of other instances in which the federal government backed risky and financially unstable firms, using taxpayer money to fund an ideologically driven pursuit of unproven energy sources."

37 Saw lots and lots and lots of this behavior in the dot-com days, and even since then when a startup gets too much money at once they somehow decide they need lots of big and impressive stuff.

Sometimes you need big and impressive stuff, but usually when you do it's out on the shop floor or locked up in an equipment room.

One of the problems with big, impressive stuff is that the maintenance and support bills are usually big and impressive too.

Anything anybody gets for free gets assigned that value, absolute zero.

Ever drive by a public housing complex?  Free housing.  How well do the residents take care of their free housing?

Public transportation?  Yeah it's not "free" to get on, but each ride is relatively inexpensive.  It's a lovely, piss-scented mode of transportation.

Tax dollars that are paid into public coffers with great difficulty by strapped makers, get spent with blissful abandon by shameless takers.

Not wanting to torpedo an already teetering economy with Cap and Trade does not mean we don't care about the environment.  I also don't think you fully understand the Solyndra story.  It has nothing to do with being against solar technology.

Hastily purchased state-of-the-art equipment ended up being sold for pennies on the dollar, still in its plastic bubble wrap, employees said.

The mafia use to do  this all the time its called "busting out a place" it was a huge money maker for them.Of course after they busted the place out they use to burn it down for the insurance money,I suppose the feds moved in before Solyndra had time to do that

Reset the rules of government lending.

Rule #1: You, the borrower, being the living entity that serves the corporation in any official capacity, are playing a game of You Bet Your Life. If you win in business, whether through skill, tenacity, luck, divine intervention, etc. and replay this loan and fair interest, you keep your life. On the other hand, if you fail in your business venture and squander these public funds, for any reason whatsoever, including bad luck, you lose your life. No do-over's allowed. No whining, no excuses. Results only accepted.

This simplified form would be self policing on the front end, encourage strong business ethics/practices and put a torch to the corporate veil once and for all.

Seems to me this was the problem from the get-go. Historically, startups and young companies here would forego building their own facilities until they were solidly profitable. Solyndra built a brand-new factory (in fucking expensive California, no less) early on before reaching that point.

167 maybe you morons can make something of this. Remember Lightsquared? Well they've announced their partner who will produce the devices we'll all have to retrofit to or buy new in order to use GPS. The company is Javad GNSS. They do have an office in San Jose, but they do all of their R & D in Russia and the company itself has close ties to IRAN. So is everyone ready to retrofit and make Lightsquared and Javad more money than any other U.S. company by taking over both GPS and the 4G & Satellite markets forcing out everyone who doesn't want to buy their patented and licensed products. Additionally the Lightsquared plan will kill Galileo and China's COMPASS, but leave Russia's GLONASS alone? Tried to get some others to bring Lightsquared up again, maybe you Morons can do better.
