— DrewM 8 eastern on NBC.
The old saying in any sport is no playoff series begins until the road team wins a game. Apparently this series has yet to begin. Each team has won the 3 games on their home ice. Boston blew out the Canucks 3 times in Boston, while the Canucks have held on to win 3 1 goal games in Vancouver.
As with any 7 game series there are multiple story lines but for me the biggest has been the enigmatic play of Roberto Luongo. In the 3 games he's won he's been very good to brilliant. In his 3 losses (he's been pulled in 2 of them), you'd think he'd never been on skates and was holding his stick in the wrong hand.
The key for Boston tonight is to get a quick goal on Luongo (preferably a soft one). Luongo reflects the psyche of the Canucks...when things are going well, they go really well. When it starts to go bad...neither Luongo nor the Canaucks have the internal grit, heart, whatever you want to call to stem the tide when things go bad.
The key for the Bruins will be do what they've been doing all along, win or lose...take the body at every opportunity, roll their lines and get great goaltending from Tim Thomas (who, win or lose, is going to be the Conn Smythe winner)
I started off this series simply disliking the Canucks. After watching the way they rolled over like heartless dogs 3 times in Boston, they disgust me. All the talent in the world but no heart whatsoever.
As a Ranger fan it's pained me to root for the Bruins but I really hope they win tonight.

Game 7 here we go. full discretion, i'm rooting for the Canucks and have come to despise this Bruins team but after my Heat choked 4-2 to the Mavs and the glee that erupted from so many, i'm ready for another sports dissapointment.
So as I posted in the previous thread here is the History of the Canadian NHL teams since 1993's Cup win by the Montreal...er...Canadiens:
94 - Rangers def. Canucks 4-3
04 - my Bolts def. Flames 4-3
06 - Hurricanes def. Oilers 4-3
07 - Ducks def. Senators 4-1
11 - Canucks VS Bruins 3-3 (Game 7 Tonight)
btw since that 93 win by Montreal we've had 6 first time cup winning teams from the US win the cup (Devils in 95, Avalanche in 96, Stars in 99, Lightning in 04, Hurricanes in 06, & Ducks in 07)

btw both the Canucks and Bruins have History to look to.
in 2003 the Devils and Ducks clashed all the way to game 7 after each team won at home. in game 7, the Devils won at home to win the cup. good news for the Canucks.
BUT in 2009 the Pens and Redwings battled all the way to game 7 after each team won at home and on the road in Detroit, the Pens won to win the cup (and avenge their 4-2 loss to the Wings in the cup finals the year before). good news for the Bruins.
basically, anything can happen.

I don't think it's a serious disagreement. Cuban seems to think that a sufficiently gaudy ring is unwearable, and he wants to wear his token. I'd be surprised if the players don't get their rings.
Cuban, though? I betcha he gets a freakin' belt.

Greed is eventually going to kill sports as we know it and hopefully it'll reset itself. I'm watching that right now with Ohio State.

Canada is kicking our ass under this mensa administration we have.
Don't diss the Canadians. Politically they are proving they are smarter than us. Tonight, they could prove they are more athletic than us when it comes to tossing a frozen chunk of environmently dangerous rubber into a "goal" made out of oil based nylon. And afterwards, the molested goalie will take a drink out of his plastic water bottle and bang his kevlar/wood (oh, the horror, dead trees), (oh the horror, kevlar contains carbon), stick on his nylon pads and get ready to be molested again.
What a freaking weird world we live in.

I've already sworn off the NFL because of it. Or, more accurately, because of publicly funding stadiums. If your sport is so successful, why do you need the subsidy?
(And to pour salt on the wound, the NFL blacks out broadcasts to the taxpayers who are paying for the stadium. Thanks, guys.)
Eventually, I'm going to bail on professional sports completely, because it's such a scam.

How has Vancouver not figured out Tim Thomas?
Unorthadox goalies don't normally hold up well in seven games series.
Thomas does not play in the blue paint, screened shots from the point with someone on the either post to pick up the rebounds.
Vancouver is gonna lose this game if they keep playing the same way.

Same thing with players, there are some players who are just playoff performers and nothing else.
Here in the burgh, Max Talbot is a joke all season with a .28 scoring per game average, but then in the playoffs it's .48.
Some players rise to the occasion, others falter like Joe Thorton.

Two words. Socialized Medicine.
The tax rate is too high for the teams to survive up there. Gord Donnelly got traded from the Stars to a Canadian team and he was PISSED. The quote from him was something about how much money he's losing by living in Canada.
The teams started moving and the government tried to give the teams tax breaks to make them more competitive to the US market and the citizens told them to pound sand. They get what they deserve.
Sorry, but dems da breaks....

You are correct. My mistake.
it was Burrows. He should be suspended and I can't believe that the NHL came back with the crap of "it didn't look like he intended to bite." That was RIDICULOUS!!! You can see him bite down and pull back on the guys finger.
Just more of the "Canada needs the cup" played by the NHL.
They earned their gold medal. Entitlement is no reason to pick a winner.

The dollar disparity killed Canadian professional sport teams for years as well .
All contracts were in US dollars, that was part of the problem, but as of today 1 american dollar is work 97 canadian cents. We're almost even with the loony.

Posted by: YRM (Go Canucks Tonight) at June 15, 2011 09:05 PM (UzBwz)
No worries. I won't try to convince you, by any means.
I just don't really like it when players that build their entire careers in one place, but because they just couldn't bring a championship there, they bail to win one. It's not like Boston didn't have talent around him while he was there.
I was a Chelios fan for years, then he bailed to Detroit to get him a cup. He just had enough HGH in him to last till he was 45 or whatever and got a couple.

Speaking of Columbus, their fans deserve better than the product they've iced in the last few years. Those fans turn out, they're loud, and they deserve a winner. I have a hard time understanding why they have such difficulty surrounding Rick Nash and Steve Mason with more talent.
They've got RJ Umberger who is very very good.
They haven't had a consistent goaltending season since Mason's rookie year.

Thomas had some pretty major hip surgery in the offseason, and there was some real question as to whether he'd even be able to come back, so I think Rask started the season.
Yeah, that's what I thought, but they road Rask in the playoffs the year before. He has a pretty good run that season.

Very good point.
I look at a guy like Dirk. He had a chance to leave as a free agent. He didn't. He stayed in Dallas and worked to win a title there. Dallas didn't have the most talented team in the playoffs, but they had drive, determination and heart and beat the mighty (childish) big 3 to bring it home. That's what I respect.
If it's your time, it's your time. I don't respect the Florida Marlins that fielded an all-star team to win a championship, then disbanded the entire team 2 weeks later. That's just gay.

um.....Wade wasn't faking a cough after Dirk's 103 game with James and laughing about it? Wade at least brought game.
The only one of those 3 that showed maturity was Bosh. The only thing that Wade did was the post game press conference where he was politically correct and covered the tough questions to keep James from eating too much sneaker.

I lost it for soccer when I learned from a Brazilian friend of mine that they farm their children and dope em early so they'll grow.
Said they started HGH on one kid at 12 because he was really good, but was only supposed to grow to 5'4" or so. He ended up getting to 5'9" and was a goal scoring machine..

There has been a lot of talk in the Columbus Dispatch the past week that Columbus is working with Philly to bring Jeff Carter to the Blue Jackets in trade for Jakub Voracek and C'bus 8th overall pick in the draft. That would be pretty big for Columbus. I would rather see Huselius go than Voracek, but Nash and Carter on the same line would likely be pretty productive.

Yeah, I'd be worried if I had your GM too, didn't you guys pay Boorgaard like over a million a season before he died? Some schmuck goon.
New York's problem, in my opinion, is that they sign big name people whether or not they fit into New York's system or not. Their GM treats his team the same way someone playing NHL 2011 on XBox does.
That said, all players this offseason will be over priced. Brad Richards is a great example. Here you have a guy that's probably one hit away from a career ending concussion and he's gonna get a big payday.
You would have though the Rangers learned their lesson with Marion "China Doll" Gaborik.

Yeah, I think part of it is the pressure of being a GM in New York, you have to take a lot more heat from the fans and sports media than you do in most other cities and that affects your decision.
You say you're gonna build a physical team, but then Gaborik comes on the market and everyone in the city is screaming, "sign gaborik".
That's why I'm so greatful for Ray Shero, he's probably only made 2 bad signings or trades in his tenure.

Unclefacts, you should be excited, you just got a great owner.
The future looks great for Buffalo.
You have the leagues best goalie(or at least top 3), a pretty solid team, and a new owner who will spend to the cap.

He's also an elite playmaker, and there is no other solution for center, unless you're prepared to fork over heavy assets for Paul Stastny or Jason Spezza, IF either one of those players is actually available. This is the price you pay when draft you Hugh Jessiman instead of Ryan Getzlaf or Ryan Kesler. Derek Stepan is going to be a very good player some day, maybe even a #1 center, but, adding Richards allows him to develop with Richards being a mentor.

Posted by: garrett at June 15, 2011 06:28 PM (dMnQZ)
Yeah, his hands are somewhat tied.
What's he going to do? Break up the Sedins? Was not starting Luongo really an option at some point? Not really.
He's also lost a lot of guys already. There just weren't a lot of lineup buttons to push.
That's kind of the problem with them....plenty of talent, it either works or it doesn't.

I think they'd rather save the excess for when a legit top-pairing D-men hits the market. Sign Richards, then trade for Brent Burns when the Wild can't meet his contract demands. Staal/Burns becomes a dynamite top pairing. And, just wait until Chris Kreider joins the team in 2012-3.

I never played hockey.
I grew up in the Midwest. Played baseball, football, and basketball. Couldn't figure out why people liked Hockey.
Then, in 1980, I went to the St. Louis Checkerdome and watched the Blues and Blackhawks. I had never seen anything like it. Unlike watching on TV, you could feel the speed and the violence as it played live before your eyes. There were more fights in the stands than on the ice, and those were numerous. Long before high priced contracts and corporate boxes, this was a blue-collar sport with fanatic fans. I had never seen anything like it, and I have gone to games regularly since. My favorite spectator sport. And let's be honest, hockey players are the greatest althetes in any professional sport, hands down.

if we're gonna talk exciting championship wins for me it was def. the 04 Bolts. down 3-2 and w/ all of Canada and the NHL "experts" against you, we came back to win an awesome and heart pounding game 6 and then dominated game 7.
the Bucs win was fun and the Heat comeback down 0-2 was great too but the Hockey playoffs are the best in my opinion.

Looks like that was in '51.
My husband watched a lot of hockey in the 70s and 80s, but he doesn't remember this. I will be gentle with him and not remind him he's old and senile.

seriously? OMFG is that's true they want to beat Detroit out for rioting.
down here when we lose the title round we just come back to work/school extremly depressed and when we win we set off fireworks, take the next day off, and go around honking cars.
app. in Detroit and Vancouver the answer is violence?

I love sports championship victories even when the team I wanted to lose wins, I get a kick out of the celebrations that erupt only 4 times a year. the only time I haven't watched and enjoyed the victories was when my Rays, and recently, Heat lost. Then I just go to bed pissed off and depressed. *whimpers*

I think for most players, even the Euros now, it's the Cup.
The Olympics are for country and all but the Cup is a 9 month, 100+ game slog with a handful of guys you spend so much time with. There can't be anything like it.

I understand their dissapointment. In 08 my Rays shocked the world and said F you to the ESPN douches...and then lost when it mattered. My Heat were the team to hate this past year and they came up 1 series short from making the hatred all worth it. it sucks to see a team you root for months come up 1 more win short, but damn just sleep it off and mourn the lost. don't go and riot. just get over the sadness and think about next year or what sports league is up next. there are 4 chances a year for you to get to celebrate.

Yup....Keenan told the Rangers in 1994, win this game, and you walk together in history. Oh, and 48 hours until the Rangers buyout Chris Drury.

1. The Canucks finally shed some of the undeserved rock star status they've had in this town. Especially "Louuuuuuuuuuuuuu!" (Rhymes with "booooooo") Good goaltender. But hopefully now he'll develop some fucking heart. Life lessons, character-building, etc.
2. Hire Swedes to play for you, and you get Swedes to play for you. Like an Italian sports car - great on the track during time trials, but not so great on a muddy road. Canadian teams need Canadian players. 'Nuff said.
3. It was really nice to see so many BC boys hoisting the Cup tonight. Congrats, guys.

It's damned nice to hand off my Blackhawks' trophy to the Bruins rather than the hated 'Nucks. Nails performance by Thomas, Marchand and the rest of the Bruins - gratz - I know what its like to wait a fking long time for a Cup. You and your fans deserve every beer I didn't manage to drink myself already.

Rioting over sports just isn't a NYC thing.
Seems to be a problem in some cities and not others.

Agreed. For the first time in Vancouver's history, we have a chance to make it to the cup again. '97 was an acknowledged fluke, but this is a highly skilled team.
But in the end, it's all about heart.

I read somewhere today that Ted Linesman compared Kessler to Messier today. I haven't looked it up but I'm going to bet Moose never had just a single point in a Cup Final.
So with all due respect...No.

I am a Canucks fan, but I agree with Drew. They disgusted me in this series. Played with no heart. They didn't deserve to win, and they didn't deserve my support.

Don't know if it's been mentioned that the 94 Rangers were the first ones to take the Cup everywhere . . .
My uncles actually drank at a neighborhood bar with the Cup in the building
