Stanley Cup Final Thread
— DrewM

Game 1 was 1-0 with the Canucks pulling out with about 19 seconds left. Game 2 is coming up tonight at 8 EDT on NBC.

Boston did a good job keeping the Sedin twins in check. Ryan Kessler was again the difference in the game, making a great play to gain the zone to set up the game winner.

Both goaltenders were very good, with Roberto Luongo making one more save.

The key for the Bruins is to get more second chance shots on Luongo and get more traffic in front of him.

The most important key for the Bruins is their power play. It's been awful throughout the playoffs. Unless they get it gear, they are in big trouble. Justin Bourne has some free advice on how to make it work...stop being so fancy and move Chara back to the point.

For the Canucks they need to do more of the same, just better. They skated well and got more quality chances (Tim Thomas robbed them on a number of occasions). Some of the problems for the Canucks maybe attributable to the long layoff they had. Well, they got the rust off and still one the game.

The Canucks came out flying in Game 1, which was to be expected given the energy in the city and the building. The Bruins withstood the onslaught and had a chance to steal a road game. It only gets tougher for them tonight.

Something I should have mentioned originally....Game 1 got chippy and nasty pretty quickly. You don't always get that with two teams that don't play much but over a long series it builds. Since it started that way, it should be fun tonight.

And finally, great moments in Vancouver Canucks Stanley Cup history.

Me bitter? A Rangers' fan who hasn't had a sniff of the Cup since then? No, not at all.

1 You mean Ryan Kessler, not Phil Kessel. Kessel plays for the Leafs.

Is this the Buddy Roemer thread Drew promised me?

Ehem, so what do you hockey guys think about Winnipeg getting another team? (I think it's great for what its worth, Atlanta isn't much of a pro sports town anyway, nevermind hockey, they barely support the Hawks, and the Falcons, particularly when they are losing.)

Think they should rename the Thrashers the Jets?

Me, I'm more of a basketball guy...

Yeah...ducking.....

14 The key for the Bruins is to get more second chance shots on Luongo and get more traffic in front of him. Posted by: DrewM. at 07:54 PM The key is to learn the lesson the Blackhawks taught everyone in the NHL playoffs about Luongo in Round 1: HIGH.GLOVE.SIDE. Go high glove side on Luongo and he chokes more times than not on those shots. Go watch Games 4-6 of 'Hawks-Canucks in Round 1. We freaking destroyed Luongo high glove side every freaking game. Even the VS announcers showed replays of how Luongo drops his glove and then comes high to try to stop high glove side shots. The 'Hawks exposed him. Boston just needs to apply the lessons learned from that series. The only way that Vancouver won Game 7 is because they tightened up the D and protected Luongo's overrated ass all game. Blocking shots, clogging up the front of the net with 3 players to deny any point shots, etc. Boston needs to spread out the Canucks' D, get going on the transition game and go high glove side. Bruins in 6.

I'll say this, as a guy not into hockey, there is nothing like going to a playoff hockey game, on the glass especially. Fun to watch, and much better than on TV.

I think football and basketball are better on TV, particularly the former, and baseball/hockey are better in person.

I went to a few Redwings/Avs playoff games back in the late 90s and it was really enjoyable. The speed and intensity was impressive.

Posted by: Delta Smelt at June 04, 2011 08:34 PM I went to Game 6 of the Finals in Philly last year. Amazing, amazing atmosphere. When Philly scored with about 6 minutes left (I think) in the 3rd to tie it at 3-3, the place went absolutely insane. I couldn't help, but enjoy it though, even though I was nervous that was just what the Flyers needed to give them momentum to win the game. I wasn't a hockey fan at all -- in fact, I thought the sport was stupid for actually allowing fighting -- until I went to see a Red Wings-Blue Jackets game live in Columbus back in 2003. Seeing it live, I had an entirely different perspective on the game, as opposed to watching it on TV. It's much, much better live. Watching the plays get setup, seeing the line changes, seeing the odd-man rushes develop. Just awesome. Been a fan ever since, and developed into a die-hard hockey fan the more I watched and learned the rules. Then when my Blackhawks got good again, it made my love of hockey even better. And seeing them win and raise the Cup... no words.

Yup, you made alot of good points.  One thing I noticed is that a hockey crowd, with the same arena, is much louder than a basketball crowd generally.  At least in Denver it seemed that way.

I think if more people saw hockey live, and could follow it that way, the more of a following in the US it would have.

Hockey just isn't near as good on TV.  The gap between in person and television is huge.

Football on the other hand is much better on TV, and is one of the main reasons why it is basically the new national past time.

40 I think if more people saw hockey live, and could follow it that way, the more of a following in the US it would have.

I dunno.  I've been to a few live games (Caps and Blackhawks) and it wasn't what made me become more interested in the game.  I became more interested when there were periods of time that we had access to decent coverage of a decent team, preferably a US team.  But the most important factor was watching games with my husband, and occasionally his family.  They knew the sport so well that they'd begin cheering long before the puck was even headed toward the net.  That helped me see the set up.

I think the problem is the lack of adequate television coverage and the somewhat "hokey" nature of hockey coverage, which I think derives from the Canadian-centric nature.  Hockey Night in Canada is one of the few products you can get regularly in most US markets and, frankly, it blows.  The play by play is fine, but the intermissions are terrible.  Low budget production values and not enough analysis to help people learn the sport.

If you don't have a reason to follow hockey, either because of where you live or because of friends or family who are into it, I think it's hard to get interested in a sport played by pasty white guys with runny noses and funny names.  Having more American players would help a lot, as would shortening the playoffs (how many teams don't get in at this point? and what in heck are we doing watching hockey in June?!) and just getting it on basic cable more regularly.

I mean, I think it's charming now, but it is pretty hokey.  Like watching an old Dr. Who episode.

41 heh

An American, a Scot and a Canuk were in a terrible car accident. They were all brought to the same emergency room, but all three of them died before they arrived. Just as they were about to put the toe tag on the American, he stirred and opened his eyes. Astonished, the doctors and nurses present asked him what happened.

"Well," said the American, "I remember the crash, and then there was a beautiful light, and then the Canadian and the Scot and I were standing at the gates of heaven. St. Peter approached us and said that we were all too young to die, and that for a donation of $100, we could return to the earth."

He continued, " So of course, I pulled out my wallet and gave him the $100, and the next thing I knew I was back here."

"That's amazing!" said one of the doctors, "But what happened to the other two?"

"Last I saw them," replied the American, "the Scot was haggling over the price and the Canadian was waiting for the government to pay for his."

No, that's true. Agreed. I guess what I meant was something more theoretical.  In other words, if a vast majority of the sports watching public could have the experience of watching a playoff hockey game in person, the sport would have more fans, at least on a casual level.

As a player he won 6 scoring titles, two stanley cups, played with a herniated disc and cancer, he's a registered Republican, doesn't cheat on his wife and was Knighted in Canada.

Low budget production values and not enough analysis to help people learn the sport. Posted by: Y-not at June 04, 2011 09:05 PM This is where I have been lucky. I moved to the Detroit area in 1999 for my first job and they are the definition of fanatical about their Red Wings here. They also, unlike Chicago at the time, had dedicated sports shows to the Red Wings -- pregame, post-game, interview shows, etc -- as well as having all the games telecast on local FSD (Fox Sports Detroit). So I was able to watch (1) good hockey as the Red Wings have been a great team for a good 20 years now (2) good coverage (both the radio and TV announcers for the Wings are great) and (3) good playoff hockey (as the Wings haven't missed the playoffs in about 20 years now I think). As I have grown to enjoy hockey, I have also grown to know the difference between watching good hockey and bad hockey. Bad hockey is just boring to watch. Good hockey, though, even 1-0 games, are exciting to me now. But developing into a die-hard fan has ironically come from watching my team's hated rival, the Red Wings. All my friends and coworkers being huge fans who basically badgered me into watching the sport has helped turn me into a hockey fan as well. And it's been great to have my Blackhawks become good again, so I could become a fan of the 'Hawks instead of just a fan of anyone who plays the Red Wings. YES - that is one thing that I can't stand about the game, to me it just looks like guys shooting a puck back and forth, I don't see any strategy or whatnot Posted by: chemjeff at June 04, 2011 09:08 PM That's how it used to be for me. I didn't understand any of the rules (offsides, icing, penalties, etc) and I couldn't follow the puck at all, because I didn't understand the game and understand strategy so I never anticipated where they were going to pass the puck. That all changed, the more I watched, the more I learned the rules. And seeing the game live, seeing a 3-on-2 break by the Wings, watching the puck pass from the left wing to the right wing and back to the trailer and then BANG! goal scored by a sprawling goalie... aw yeah, that's when I started becoming a die hard hockey fan. Seeing that play develop and watching the Wings masterfully execute it... amazing.

65 62 I didn't understand any of the rules It's really quite simple: once in a while, one player sideswipes one form the opposing team. Then a Riot-on-Ice breaks out, as both teams go at it as Jerry Springer sends in the bouncers to break it up. Oh, and once in a while they slingshot hotdogs and T-shirts into the stands. Got it?

In Hockey the puck has to cross the blue line before other offensive players or it's offside.

In Soccer the offensive player (usually the striker) has to be farther from the goal than the closest defender when the ball is serviced forward or it's offside.

I will never ever ever understand offsides in either hockey or soccer.  Efforts up to and including the use of puppets have been made to explain it to me and woooooooooooosh there it goes whizzing right by me.

I think I kinda understand the soccer offsides rule. There has to be a person from the other team on the opposite side of the ball at all times, right?  But yeah the hockey one confuses me still.  And icing - WTF?  I know it has to do with the puck crossing 2 lines in a row but doesn't that happen all the time?

You can tell Europeans came up with that rule

Yeah, because that's hard to do.

Here is the rink

G= goal line, there are two

B= blue line, there are two

R= Redline, there is only one in the center of the ice.

G             B       R     B            G

The area between the two B's is called the neutral zone.

Now if a player carries the puck over the B(blue line), it's called "carrying the puck into the offensive zone".

The puck has to enter the the zone(carried over the blue line) before a teammate goes over the blue line.  If a teammate goes over the blue line into the offensive zone before the puck goes in then it is offsides.

97 I can't believe this thread is Weinerless. Oh, right, hockey, duh. Anyway, I read the whole interview Ladd Ehlinger had with Dan Wolfe - I get it. I totally get it. I was divorced almost a year ago and my ex-wife pulls something every other week (literally) trying to make an excuse to keep me from my kids. Weird ass shit - witchcraft in my house, etc. Woman scorned and all that. So Patriot76 or whatever, he had a very bad experience with his daughter, he has a VERY minimal visitation with his kids, and he doesn't want to lose that. But at the same time, he sees Weiner twit-following young girls and doesn't want him to get away with it, but not so much that he wants the full Joe the Plumber/Paula Jones treatment, because it will cost him more than he can bear. He wants someone else to run Weiner to ground - someone with the resources, without the vulnerabilities. And with all the unfairness he has seen in the courts (don't even get me started on that crap) he feels extra special burned that a lot of people he expected to be on his side have turned their guns on him instead of on Weiner. Mess with a Democrat and they will pour out the politics of personal destruction. Ever hear anything about the guy in the toilet in the wide stance Senator case? So, yeah he is feeling burned, and here is this creep in the Congress still collecting a paycheck, and you know what, he's going to get away with it. A Republican would have been done on last Saturday. As Bill Clinton said, well, we just have to win, then.

Once the ball crosses the half court line it can't go back unless your openent knocks it back. If you are stradling the line that's fine as long as the ball doesn't go back accross it. one one of your feet crosses the line it can't go back if you have the ball.

Our Ewok friend is going crazy on teh Twitters. I thought he was taking the weekend off

Can you blame him.

A major story breaks, Weiner sends a picture of his cock to a 21 year old girl who isn't his wife and then all but openly admits it in multiple interviews.

The story is fought the entire way by the left and many conservatives.

Now a list of conservatives like Patterico and company are making the people whos saw the tweet and alerted others the issue.

It's like Joe the Plumber all over again. The issue should have been Obama's response to Joe's question. Instead the media made it about Joe the Plumber, accessing his tax records, medical records, etc etc.  Now conservatives are doing that to the people who first saw the twitter pic and reported it.

The story was, is and will always be about Weiner sending a picture of his cock some college girl, not the skeevy background of the people who happened to see Weiner tweet it.

So Ace is not only fighting the left, he's fighting our allies on the right.

The last two games, they've died by it.

170 Long Flight home for Thomas.

171 Clyde- Boston played extremely well tonight. They've lost two straight games on unusual plays. Perhaps you're right- maybe they come back and flatten Vancouver at home for two games. This evening, though, Boston did just about everything right, and it didn't go their way. I'm pulling for Boston, but... In any event, I'd love to be wrong.

176 Jebus, Thomas was almost at the right face off circle.

I know that's his thing but wow.

178 Is it just me or is the Stanley Cup the ugliest trophy in sports?

It's just you.

179 Woo hoo!

tmi3rd, don't know that it was really an unusual play, it was just a forward out-hustling a defenseman and getting a goal because of his efforts.  For all the pretty goals in this game, many or most are set up because someone worked harder than the other guy to get to the puck.

180 How do you figure? 2 close 1-goal games on the road and they can't come back from that? Remember Round 1 when Chicago came back from 0-3 to send Game 7 to OT.

Boston matches up just as well with the Canuckleheads as Chicago did. They tie this up 2-2 in Boston and it's a best of 3 series.
---
The Canucks lost games 4 & 5 to the Hawks because the locker room came down with a stomach bug.  No one found it odd that all the sudden the Hawks actually started out skating the Canucks, who looked like pylon out on the ice?  They recovered and dominated game 6, but still lost.  Then both teams showed up and Canucks barely got by in game 7.

Boston may have more talent on D and in net, and more depth on offense than Chicago, but they're not playing like it.  I don't see a come back by Boston.

Canucks take game 3 and game 5, win the Cup at home.

181 I can't believe people are still whining about a little gnawing on Bergeron's leather.

Ruutu's was suspended two games for biting so hard and not letting go even when the other guy was pulling his glove away.  How can anyone cite that as a precedent for suspension?  How about Savard not getting a suspension for biting Carcillo last year?  How about Horton not getting a suspension against Tampa Bay when he threw a water bottle at a fan, where there is a precedent for suspension for the same act?

Give it up guys, Peverly's two handed amputation attempt on Bieksa was way more dangerous and just as unsportsmanlike.

182 Clyde @ 176: "Boston ... lost two straight games on unusual plays." What's up with your definition of "unusual"? Sure a great blue-line dance by Kesler in Game 1, but the Wisconsin Wonder pulls off at least one spectacular play just about every game, & after that it was tic-tac-in - hardly unusual for any team that passes well, and the Canuckleheads certainly do that. And this latest win was off a PRE-PLANNED move by Burrows, to take advantage first of the relatively slow-moving Chara and the relatively-aggressive Thomas, with either Chara being too clumsy to avoid pinning Thomas as he chased Burrows, or Thomas going momentarily brain-dead getting too close to the big lug to avoid getting caught up in his massive gravity (Burrows said in interviews immediately following the game that Vancouver scouts gave the Canuckleheads a selection of plays deliberately designed to take advantage of the propensities of both.). I mean, if Burrows or any of the Vancouver skaters gets that chance again, he will make the same move: force Chara into a tight spot where he has trouble moving the big body, and if that tight spot happens to be formed partly by the jolly rotundity of Less-than-tiny Tim Thomas, so much the better. Neither was remotely a fluke; each was a skilled play that turned out well (or bad, depending on whether or not you cheer for the yellow types of Boston Commiechusetts).
