— DrewM Game 1 was 1-0 with the Canucks pulling out with about 19 seconds left. Game 2 is coming up tonight at 8 EDT on NBC.
Boston did a good job keeping the Sedin twins in check. Ryan Kessler was again the difference in the game, making a great play to gain the zone to set up the game winner.
Both goaltenders were very good, with Roberto Luongo making one more save.
The key for the Bruins is to get more second chance shots on Luongo and get more traffic in front of him.
The most important key for the Bruins is their power play. It's been awful throughout the playoffs. Unless they get it gear, they are in big trouble. Justin Bourne has some free advice on how to make it work...stop being so fancy and move Chara back to the point.
For the Canucks they need to do more of the same, just better. They skated well and got more quality chances (Tim Thomas robbed them on a number of occasions). Some of the problems for the Canucks maybe attributable to the long layoff they had. Well, they got the rust off and still one the game.
The Canucks came out flying in Game 1, which was to be expected given the energy in the city and the building. The Bruins withstood the onslaught and had a chance to steal a road game. It only gets tougher for them tonight.
Something I should have mentioned originally....Game 1 got chippy and nasty pretty quickly. You don't always get that with two teams that don't play much but over a long series it builds. Since it started that way, it should be fun tonight.
And finally, great moments in Vancouver Canucks Stanley Cup history.
Me bitter? A Rangers' fan who hasn't had a sniff of the Cup since then? No, not at all.

Is this the Buddy Roemer thread Drew promised me?
Ehem, so what do you hockey guys think about Winnipeg getting another team? (I think it's great for what its worth, Atlanta isn't much of a pro sports town anyway, nevermind hockey, they barely support the Hawks, and the Falcons, particularly when they are losing.)
Think they should rename the Thrashers the Jets?
Me, I'm more of a basketball guy...
Yeah...ducking.....

I'll say this, as a guy not into hockey, there is nothing like going to a playoff hockey game, on the glass especially. Fun to watch, and much better than on TV.
I think football and basketball are better on TV, particularly the former, and baseball/hockey are better in person.
I went to a few Redwings/Avs playoff games back in the late 90s and it was really enjoyable. The speed and intensity was impressive.

Amazing, amazing atmosphere. When Philly scored with about 6 minutes left (I think) in the 3rd to tie it at 3-3, the place went absolutely insane
Yup, you made alot of good points. One thing I noticed is that a hockey crowd, with the same arena, is much louder than a basketball crowd generally. At least in Denver it seemed that way.
I think if more people saw hockey live, and could follow it that way, the more of a following in the US it would have.
Hockey just isn't near as good on TV. The gap between in person and television is huge.
Football on the other hand is much better on TV, and is one of the main reasons why it is basically the new national past time.

They need some scoring. Chara is starting to look and play his age.
Also Recchi needs to take some more steroids before the game, clearly he hasn't been taking enough lately.

I dunno. I've been to a few live games (Caps and Blackhawks) and it wasn't what made me become more interested in the game. I became more interested when there were periods of time that we had access to decent coverage of a decent team, preferably a US team. But the most important factor was watching games with my husband, and occasionally his family. They knew the sport so well that they'd begin cheering long before the puck was even headed toward the net. That helped me see the set up.
I think the problem is the lack of adequate television coverage and the somewhat "hokey" nature of hockey coverage, which I think derives from the Canadian-centric nature. Hockey Night in Canada is one of the few products you can get regularly in most US markets and, frankly, it blows. The play by play is fine, but the intermissions are terrible. Low budget production values and not enough analysis to help people learn the sport.
If you don't have a reason to follow hockey, either because of where you live or because of friends or family who are into it, I think it's hard to get interested in a sport played by pasty white guys with runny noses and funny names. Having more American players would help a lot, as would shortening the playoffs (how many teams don't get in at this point? and what in heck are we doing watching hockey in June?!) and just getting it on basic cable more regularly.
I mean, I think it's charming now, but it is pretty hokey. Like watching an old Dr. Who episode.

An American, a Scot and a Canuk were in a terrible car accident. They were all brought to the same emergency room, but all three of them died before they arrived. Just as they were about to put the toe tag on the American, he stirred and opened his eyes. Astonished, the doctors and nurses present asked him what happened.
"Well," said the American, "I remember the crash, and then there was a beautiful light, and then the Canadian and the Scot and I were standing at the gates of heaven. St. Peter approached us and said that we were all too young to die, and that for a donation of $100, we could return to the earth."
He continued, " So of course, I pulled out my wallet and gave him the $100, and the next thing I knew I was back here."
"That's amazing!" said one of the doctors, "But what happened to the other two?"
"Last I saw them," replied the American, "the Scot was haggling over the price and the Canadian was waiting for the government to pay for his."

No, that's true. Agreed. I guess what I meant was something more theoretical. In other words, if a vast majority of the sports watching public could have the experience of watching a playoff hockey game in person, the sport would have more fans, at least on a casual level.
It really is a unique experience, and blows TV away.

And Lemieux is a saint?
He saved the Penguins from bankruptcy and as a co-owner with Ron Burkle has built up a team that is in the playoffs every year, won a cup in 2009, lost in game 6 of the SCF in 2008, and has done more charity work in Pittsburgh than the stingy Rooney family has.
As a player he won 6 scoring titles, two stanley cups, played with a herniated disc and cancer, he's a registered Republican, doesn't cheat on his wife and was Knighted in Canada.
So yea, I'd say he's pretty close to being a saint.

Still does? The only time in the past several years that Mario has spoken publically about anything was the Islanders game which was an embarrasment to hockey.
It looked like a 1980s movie depiction of hockey.
Thank god people like Lemiuex have helped move this league away from the garbage Canadian fighting hockey of the 1970s and 1980s and more toward the finesse hockey we enjoy today.

However a players body can be over the blue line before the puck as long as one skate is behind the blueline in the neutral zone.

In Hockey the puck has to cross the blue line before other offensive players or it's offside.
In Soccer the offensive player (usually the striker) has to be farther from the goal than the closest defender when the ball is serviced forward or it's offside.

I think I kinda understand the soccer offsides rule. There has to be a person from the other team on the opposite side of the ball at all times, right? But yeah the hockey one confuses me still. And icing - WTF? I know it has to do with the puck crossing 2 lines in a row but doesn't that happen all the time?

okay that's just dumb
You can tell Europeans came up with that rule
Posted by: chemjeff at June 04, 2011 05:37 PM (7mSYS)
Yeah, because that's hard to do.
Here is the rink
G= goal line, there are two
B= blue line, there are two
R= Redline, there is only one in the center of the ice.
G B R B G
The area between the two B's is called the neutral zone.
Now if a player carries the puck over the B(blue line), it's called "carrying the puck into the offensive zone".
The puck has to enter the the zone(carried over the blue line) before a teammate goes over the blue line. If a teammate goes over the blue line into the offensive zone before the puck goes in then it is offsides.
Posted by: Ben at June 04, 2011 05:37 PM (DKV43)

Once the ball crosses the half court line it can't go back unless your openent knocks it back. If you are stradling the line that's fine as long as the ball doesn't go back accross it. one one of your feet crosses the line it can't go back if you have the ball.

Our Ewok friend is going crazy on teh Twitters. I thought he was taking the weekend off
Can you blame him.
A major story breaks, Weiner sends a picture of his cock to a 21 year old girl who isn't his wife and then all but openly admits it in multiple interviews.
The story is fought the entire way by the left and many conservatives.
Now a list of conservatives like Patterico and company are making the people whos saw the tweet and alerted others the issue.
It's like Joe the Plumber all over again. The issue should have been Obama's response to Joe's question. Instead the media made it about Joe the Plumber, accessing his tax records, medical records, etc etc. Now conservatives are doing that to the people who first saw the twitter pic and reported it.
The story was, is and will always be about Weiner sending a picture of his cock some college girl, not the skeevy background of the people who happened to see Weiner tweet it.
So Ace is not only fighting the left, he's fighting our allies on the right.

Hey, why don't you guys down there and bother the French guy from Talladega Nights in the other net?

You go in de box for two minute, and you feel shame.

the only question is when is Luongo going to pull a choke job.
My guess is game three he gives up 5 goals.

Due to the fact that I sat on my hand until it went completely numb, I can't, with 100% certainty, say that it was or was not, in fact, beyond a shadow of a doubt 4 on 1.

The last two games, they've died by it.

tmi3rd, don't know that it was really an unusual play, it was just a forward out-hustling a defenseman and getting a goal because of his efforts. For all the pretty goals in this game, many or most are set up because someone worked harder than the other guy to get to the puck.

Boston matches up just as well with the Canuckleheads as Chicago did. They tie this up 2-2 in Boston and it's a best of 3 series.
---
The Canucks lost games 4 & 5 to the Hawks because the locker room came down with a stomach bug. No one found it odd that all the sudden the Hawks actually started out skating the Canucks, who looked like pylon out on the ice? They recovered and dominated game 6, but still lost. Then both teams showed up and Canucks barely got by in game 7.
Boston may have more talent on D and in net, and more depth on offense than Chicago, but they're not playing like it. I don't see a come back by Boston.
Canucks take game 3 and game 5, win the Cup at home.

Ruutu's was suspended two games for biting so hard and not letting go even when the other guy was pulling his glove away. How can anyone cite that as a precedent for suspension? How about Savard not getting a suspension for biting Carcillo last year? How about Horton not getting a suspension against Tampa Bay when he threw a water bottle at a fan, where there is a precedent for suspension for the same act?
Give it up guys, Peverly's two handed amputation attempt on Bieksa was way more dangerous and just as unsportsmanlike.
