Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO
— rdbrewer

Just reported by Bret Baier. More information when I get it.

Added: Reuters says that the Jobs "has been on medical leave for an undisclosed condition since January 17." He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. Jobs has been named chairman. Tim Cook is to replace him as CEO.

From the Washington Post:

Steve Jobs has said that he intends to return to the company he founded at the end of June, after a five-month leave he is taking to fight the illness that has left him with a gaunt appearance. In the meantime, Apple will be helmed by Cook, a respected manager little known outside Silicon Valley.

"I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job," Jobs wrote in an e-mail distributed inside the company Wednesday.

The early consensus, among some analysts and Mac fans, is that Cook is an able administrator, though not necessarily one with the sort of salesmanship skills or industry-bending vision as his boss.

Business Insider has Jobs' letter to the board:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple''s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple''s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

That's a good question.

The answer is tied up with another question: How much has he been "driving" the company behind the scenes since he was diagnosed with cancer?  He already took one leave of absence.  If he's only been there for the sake of the Cult of Jobs, they'll be fine in a few weeks to months, once it becomes clear Apple is fine on their own.

If he's been a major driver, they're screwed six ways from Sunday.

I couldn't tell you the difference, though.

Posted by: No Whining at August 24, 2011 07:06 PM (UzjcV)

That's not totally true.  Bladder cancer comes in various grades.  Low-grade cancer is very treatable and in many cases completely cured.  High-grade bladder cancer can be detected early by simply peeing in a cup and sending it to a pathology lab for microscopic screening.  Many times it can be caught early enough to be treated even without surgery.

Fulminating high-grade bladder cancer can also be treated, again if it's early enough with radical surgery, radiation/chemo therapy. But, as with all high-grade cancers, if it has invaded the blood stream and has metastisized throughout the body (usually the bones) then the survival rate is very low.

101 @82: "If Apple was anything more than a marketing scheme this wouldn't matter. Personally, I hope for the demise of these phony tech companies like Apple and Google, but not due to cancer. That is awful." Oh fuck off. Name any other company that has been able to create an equally polished, competitively priced tablet that's been successful in the marketplace. Just one. Please. Disparaging Apple as "marketing driven" might have worked in the 90s, but not now. You don't become the world's largest tech company 'cause of slick ads alone. What fucking drivel.

107 Yeah, I know, over-hyped and over-priced. But I have always bought Apple products and never been disappointed. Desktops, laptops, a printer, ipod, iphone, and assorted gizmos. I have never had an apple product that had to be replaced because it no longer worked. I have had to give up computers because you could no longer get tax software that worked on them, or they were outdated for high speed internet. I had a color stylewrite inkjet printer from around 1994 that I was still able to turn on and use with an old desktop until about a year ago, when I finally got rid of it and a couple old computers out to save space. I know I'm paying more for my stuff from Apple, but I go a lot more years, not having to replace things than most of the people I know. I recently replaced a seven year old ibook and I really didn't have to, just realized that a new one would be faster.

Apple the phony tech company was a ground breaker in PCs. That phony tech company Apple, revolutionized smart phones.

That phony tech company Google, has made more contributions to organizing and searching the vast expanse of the internet than any company prior.

There may be a lot...A LOT... I dislike about both companies. But both have made significant contributions; that can't be taken away by their avarice or any antipathy I might have toward them.  Any more than I can take away the invention of the transistor or the development of UNIX away from AT&T.

134 Added bonus to Apple, never had a virus. Not even sure how you know if you have one. The customer support is good, but I seldom have to use it, I've bought extended warranties for laptops and the ipod, which I ended up never using. When I went to the Apple store to get my iphone and new macbook, I was prepared to get the more expensive versions, but the salesguy talked me into getting the basic of each because for the way I use them, the more expensive versions would have been overkill. Saved me a couple hundred dollars. I know a lot of people think apple stuff is over priced and over hyped, but there is a reason people are loyal, and it isn't hype. The stuff is as good as you expect.

145 Despite his liberal politics, I've always admired Steve Jobs what he was able to do with Apple.  It was like a soap opera: building from nothing, huge success, then failures, his ouster from the company and his triumphant return to turn the company into one of the most successful in the world.

What is really interesting is his involvement in Pixar.  The reason the Lamp exists today is because of his patience and faith in the group.  They were originally part of George Lucas' empire, but only for research and development of computer effects.  He wasn't interested in making animated films and made an amicable split.  When they needed an investor, Steve Jobs stepped in (after his removal from Apple).  He kept the company alive, despite losing millions over a five year period.  He backed them when Disney started to interfere creatively with Toy Story and was able to launch them as a successful IPO when the film made it big and they needed money to grow the company.  Years later, he helped merge Disney and Pixar together for $7 billion and became the largest shareholder.  Really interesting stuff (I recommend watch "The Pixar Story" documentary, which is a feature-length film available on the 2nd disc of Wall-E Blu-ray, as well as the book, "The Pixar Touch," though it is much tougher on Steve Jobs then the documentary).

He had the whipple, and then years later the liver transplant. I'm guessing he doesn't have cancer any longer, but his health is compromised by those buttkicker treatments.

192 Had they not branched into other forms of consumer electronics they were in real trouble.

In other words, I am somewhat skeptical of how critical Jobs' was to Apple's recent success.

Uhh, the whole "betamax" thing happened in the late 80s and early 90s when Jobs had been kicked out by John Sculley.  Apple was about 90 days from bankrupcy when Jobs got Gates to loan them $150 million, and his first two products he designed after that (the iMac and iPod) were major hits.

Say what you want about Apple and its products, Jobs is most certainly responsible for their current success.

Don't know if you got an answer cuz I've been cleaning up after eating.

For kitchen viewing of news, talk or cooking shows 60Hz is fine but if you'll be watching sports or action (TV room stuff) you want closer to 240Hz for faster refresh rate.
Also LCD is better for brightly lit rooms, plasma for darker and LED is best but most expensive.

My wife, for example, is 87% Italian, and gets along very well with a Mediterranean-style diet, while I need huge slabs of meat and a lot of dairy to function properly.

275 This time will be no different. Steve Jobs is the heart and soul of Apple and without him, they will swing wildly out of control, Yep, I'm afraid they'll now be run by the book, according to the numbers. They've got momentum and can milk it for a while, but who else has the star-power or mojo or whatever to insist on the kinds of things that Jobs did?

One of Jobs first gigs was for Atari. They paid him $3,000 to make Super Breakout!, and he gave Wozniak $300 to actually code it.

294 DOS = CP/M

In fairness Microsoft did buy DOS. It was Tim Paterson who copied CP/M sort of. And IBM who thought copying the interface of CP/M for the 8088 was the best idea possible. And Microsoft just put A and B together for a profit.

So basically IBM said to Gates "We want CP/M for the IBM PC!!"

Bill said "OK, I'll get some sort of port"

You can't accuse him of stealing the idea of CP/M when that was what was specifically requested by IBM.

339 Apples are the BMWs of computers. Great looking, well engineered and expensive. For photography there really isn't anything that matches an Apple. That is largely because of Steve Jobs.

NASA used to run very smoothly off of Apples until somebody high up who didn't know how to use them decided to replace them with the "industry standard" Windows systems. An unbelievable amount of Chaos ensued and continues to this day. It contributed in many ways to the down hill slide at the space agency.

Apple computers have got a wonderfully usable GUI which is supported by a hard core Unix OS underneath. If you need to do something serious with an Apple that Unix command line is a pop up terminal away. Gives the machine both grace and power.

When I was in one of the other vendor booths at the National Computer Conference in 1979 Wozniak and Jobs were young guys in the Apple booth, and a young Bill Gates was in the Microsoft Booth. That seems like it was just yesterday. It saddens me to hear of Jobs' resignation - I wish him nothing but the best in the future.

342 But only one of the aforementioned revolutionized home and mobile computing.

Exactly what did they "revolutionize" sure they made significant contributions.

Their original ideas include the Apple 1 which was a kit computer that had no operating system, but did interface a keyboard and monitor to a micro computer for the first time, though it had been done with mini computers in years prior. The Apple 2 whose only unique feature was a color monitor option.

The Apple one was an enthusiast machine only. The apple II was too expensive for the average person to own.

Most bought home computer: Commodore 64. There is your "revolution" if there was one.

345 47 Everyone has an occasional floater though.

While too much fat in the poop can make it float (and indicate problems), it's not necessarily a danger sign.  For healthy folks, floaters also happen when you have a lot of trapped gas.  So, if you've recently changed your diet, this can happen.  But, if you have floaters all the time, it might be time to get a checkup.

Since we're talking poop, let me recommend a book for anyone with young morons-in-training.  Grossology (the science of really gross things) goes into the science behing poop, snot, earwax, slime molds, etc...

Both my kids loved the books (thee about a dozen in the Grossology series).  Much to my wife's displeasure (she comes from a family of very well-mannered women), they'd regularly bring up a new gross fact they'd learned at dinner.  It also gave them a lot of cred with their friends.

I've given copies to about a half dozen kids (family and friends) for birthday/Christmas presents, and I've never been disappointed by the kids'  response to the book.

348 It's not a question of screwing up the existing game plan. It's a question of developing the next one

I'm guessing there's a book of Jobs in a vault somewhere and it better fucking have a chapter on flying cars.

Yes, Rex is dead but his hat is immortal.

It does.  You're not allowed to buy one.  Sucks to be you.

What makes an iPod better than my Walkman MP3 player?

351 Jobs will go down as one of the big names of American industry for the late 1900s and early 2000s.  He's created a lot of jobs and done a lot for the country's economy.

We've had a lot of experience in our family with cancer (both my wife and I lost our fathers to cancer (colon and lung), a son, and a nephew, and both our mother's are breast cancer survivors).  It's a nasty, nasty disease, and the treatments for it themselves are probably worse than most other diseases.

Our prayers for him and his family.

352 Apple computers have got a wonderfully usable GUI which is supported by a hard core Unix OS underneath. If you need to do something serious with an Apple that Unix command line is a pop up terminal away. Gives the machine both grace and power.

Sure, and you can install an nice version of X/Unix on a PC and it will run like a top. Had that been what NASA had transitioned to they wouldn't have had the problems they had AND they wouldn't have to deal with a proprietary architecture. Funny thing. Macs run one operating system, no other choices. I can still run DOS 6.22 on a PC if I need a solid embedded system, UNIX flavor if I need reliability, Windows if I need flexibility and open objects.

Oh, oh, you don't know Apple's history! You need to tattooed it on your forehead in reverse!

Yes, they did while Jobs was building great things like NeXT. There were white box Macs for a few years.

Speaking of Walkmans, SONY, the Apple of twenty years ago, has a market cap of 21 billion today.  Interesting.

Just kidding... Posted by: Rex

Hey, I use it on my second machine. If I had a better main system, I'd dual boot for dangerous activities ... like posting here.

This laptop is running Puppy Linux, and has been since the hard drive went bad in it six months or so ago.   It's a beautiful thing (especially for a mini-distro), and it's extended the lifespan of this old box for the foreseeable future.  I don't see any reason I'll be going back to M$ ever again.

359 The Mac makes a poor embedded system, as the OS requires to much overhead.
The Mac makes a poor high performance system as the closed architecture limits configuration possibilities.
The Mac makes a poor enthusiast user system as it's limited enthusiast user functionality requires anyone but the most advanced to adapt to it; rather than it adapting to its user.
The Mac makes a good low user computer. Easy to configure, and works without much trouble.

360 It's interesting at this time to go back and read Jobs' commencement speech at Stanford in 2005. It is very illustrative of his life's views, and how he faces certain death: http://tinyurl.com/dfbkvo

@106, 107: Amen! Like him or not, we're witnessing the passing of one of America's greatest businessmen of the past 100 years.

361 One of my best friends had to have a kidney transplant. The medicine he has to take to keep from rejecting the transplant has his natural immunity at zero, so he gets skin cancer everywhere on his head and arms. Had one ear removed totally and the other one partially, plus other stuff removed on his arms and head. It's a sad thing.

362 The Mac makes a good low user computer. Easy to configure, and works without much trouble. This pretty much sums up why Apple has gained so much market share in home computing, mobile devices, content delivery, software and tablets. Glad I bought into that fruit company. Apple was only a few weeks from allowing Motorola to sell Mac clones in the mid 90s.  They pulled the plug after Motorola had invested quite a bit to bring the clones to market.

--Apple almost did allow legit clones.

365 40 Jobs is quite brilliant and it's a darn shame. Posted by: mpfs, TPT at August 24, 2011 06:58 PM (iYbLN) He and a friend invented the personal computer in a garage in California. He also invented the concept of icons to interact with the operating system - an idea that Microsoft undeniably ripped off. Like Apple or not, Jobs did more to shape the modern world than any President - which is how things are supposed to be, in a free society like pre-Obama America. Yes, it's a shame that Jobs can't live forever. An old Czech retort to anyone saying, "It's a shame that (fill in the blank)," is, Skoda umrit ("It's a shame to die"). Meaning... we all die, and while it's a waste in many ways, it's inevitable. No one hangs around this Earth forever, no matter how smart. I'm sure Apple will survive without Jobs. If not, I'm sure another Jobs will come along and create a new one.

366 I can still run DOS 6.22 on a PC if I need a solid embedded system, UNIX flavor if I need reliability, Windows if I need flexibility and open objects. I'm not sure how you can call DOS on a PC an embedded system, but you do know that Macs are Unix machines, right? Would you then count OpenFirmware as an embedded system?

367 Damn shame. I don't buy into the cult of Mac or Apple or Jobs. Most of what he "invented" would have been invented anyway. The GUI stuff was just stolen from Xerox Parc anyway. I once owned a MacBook that I hated and an iPod Touch which I loved, other than that I've never bought an Apple product, but I recognize the contribution he made.

His obsessive focus on design and usability made tens of millions of people happy and created a lot of value. He clearly was a tremendous motivator of people and knew how to make wise hiring decisions.

If Jobs hadn't existed we'd still have smartphones and pcs and laptops. I think he's accelerated the tablet market a few years by his force of personality. But that would have happened regardless as well.

He's an impressive man. And he's probably suffering a great deal even as I type this. I would have liked to see what he would produce in the next ten years, even if I probably would not have bought it.
(I'm running Ubuntu only cause my hard drive corrupted my Windows 7 boot sector.)

An impressive man, but death comes for us all.

368 Say what you want about his product and philosophies, political or otherwise, he's one of the 20th Century's leading lights of design. That isn't just in aesthetics, but also in operating systems, peripherals, and quite literally bleeding edge computer engineering at a lot of times. Even with acknowledging Woz's insanely elegant designs in Apple's history, Jobs had further defined the evolution of personal computing from then on - not always in front, but when you count NeXT stations and iPads in with the whole kaboodle, it's clear his design priorities have shaped large sections of our technological base. Me, as a lifelong PC/IBM/DEC user (started on the PDP-8E) gotta say that Jobs is quite possibly the most important figure in the industry - period. He's a genius.

369 Apple and Xerox was a honest deal between two informed parties; what Gates did to the poor guy who wrote DOS was evil. Could have sworn I had a motorola clone at one time?

371 Apple is a number one valued company for one reason, their products are great. Innovative, simple to use, and yes, they charged a premium for that, and yes, I and millions of others paid it willingly and happily.

Windows computers totally suck ass. They are bug ridden pieces of ill-conceived crap. They are virus magnets with security so bad that 9 year old kids bring down entire networks.

If carpenters built houses the way PC programmers program, the first stiff breeze would blow them down.

My iPhone is indispensable to me.  It was my first Apple product, and I love it.  I also admire what Steve Jobs has done in terms of pure entrepenurialship (sp?).  A business man who came up with a product that people wanted, that worked, he made a ton of money doing it and people never considered themselves "ripped off."  Truly a capitalist in an excellent sense of the word.

I know he's had serious and horrible health problems, and wish he and his family nothing but the best.
