— rdbrewer Just reported by Bret Baier. More information when I get it.
Added: Reuters says that the Jobs "has been on medical leave for an undisclosed condition since January 17." He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. Jobs has been named chairman. Tim Cook is to replace him as CEO.
From the Washington Post:
Steve Jobs has said that he intends to return to the company he founded at the end of June, after a five-month leave he is taking to fight the illness that has left him with a gaunt appearance. In the meantime, Apple will be helmed by Cook, a respected manager little known outside Silicon Valley."I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job," Jobs wrote in an e-mail distributed inside the company Wednesday.
The early consensus, among some analysts and Mac fans, is that Cook is an able administrator, though not necessarily one with the sort of salesmanship skills or industry-bending vision as his boss.
Business Insider has Jobs' letter to the board:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple''s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple''s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
Steve

That's a good question.
The answer is tied up with another question: How much has he been "driving" the company behind the scenes since he was diagnosed with cancer? He already took one leave of absence. If he's only been there for the sake of the Cult of Jobs, they'll be fine in a few weeks to months, once it becomes clear Apple is fine on their own.
If he's been a major driver, they're screwed six ways from Sunday.

Yes--a tumor marker for screening is very much needed. Hopefully one will become available. It has been very useful for prostate, colon, ovarian, and others.

If memory serves, there are a couple kinds of Pancreatic Cancer. The one that everyone's talking about (which is unfortunately the common version), and another one that's got a survival rate of about 75% (which is uncommon).
I couldn't tell you the difference, though.
(When Jobs got his transplant, there was speculation that he had the latter form.)

That's not totally true. Bladder cancer comes in various grades. Low-grade cancer is very treatable and in many cases completely cured. High-grade bladder cancer can be detected early by simply peeing in a cup and sending it to a pathology lab for microscopic screening. Many times it can be caught early enough to be treated even without surgery.
Fulminating high-grade bladder cancer can also be treated, again if it's early enough with radical surgery, radiation/chemo therapy. But, as with all high-grade cancers, if it has invaded the blood stream and has metastisized throughout the body (usually the bones) then the survival rate is very low.

There may be a lot...A LOT... I dislike about both companies. But both have made significant contributions; that can't be taken away by their avarice or any antipathy I might have toward them. Any more than I can take away the invention of the transistor or the development of UNIX away from AT&T.

What is really interesting is his involvement in Pixar. The reason the Lamp exists today is because of his patience and faith in the group. They were originally part of George Lucas' empire, but only for research and development of computer effects. He wasn't interested in making animated films and made an amicable split. When they needed an investor, Steve Jobs stepped in (after his removal from Apple). He kept the company alive, despite losing millions over a five year period. He backed them when Disney started to interfere creatively with Toy Story and was able to launch them as a successful IPO when the film made it big and they needed money to grow the company. Years later, he helped merge Disney and Pixar together for $7 billion and became the largest shareholder. Really interesting stuff (I recommend watch "The Pixar Story" documentary, which is a feature-length film available on the 2nd disc of Wall-E Blu-ray, as well as the book, "The Pixar Touch," though it is much tougher on Steve Jobs then the documentary).

Supposedly, the thing that Jobs pushed was "interface comes first" -- the human design folks trump the engineers at Apple. If that's true, and the company holds onto that lesson, then Jobs isn't key.

IBM never gave a good God damn about the PC, from design to marketing to production. They still don't. Put's things in perspective; That IBM could design a computer architecture in their spare time, from a stack of leftover parts, that totally revolutionized personal computing.
Then they essentially gave it away. Because they never wanted to build it in the first place.

In other words, I am somewhat skeptical of how critical Jobs' was to Apple's recent success.
Uhh, the whole "betamax" thing happened in the late 80s and early 90s when Jobs had been kicked out by John Sculley. Apple was about 90 days from bankrupcy when Jobs got Gates to loan them $150 million, and his first two products he designed after that (the iMac and iPod) were major hits.
Say what you want about Apple and its products, Jobs is most certainly responsible for their current success.

Don't know if you got an answer cuz I've been cleaning up after eating.
For kitchen viewing of news, talk or cooking shows 60Hz is fine but if you'll be watching sports or action (TV room stuff) you want closer to 240Hz for faster refresh rate.
Also LCD is better for brightly lit rooms, plasma for darker and LED is best but most expensive.

In fairness Microsoft did buy DOS. It was Tim Paterson who copied CP/M sort of. And IBM who thought copying the interface of CP/M for the 8088 was the best idea possible. And Microsoft just put A and B together for a profit.
So basically IBM said to Gates "We want CP/M for the IBM PC!!"
Bill said "OK, I'll get some sort of port"
You can't accuse him of stealing the idea of CP/M when that was what was specifically requested by IBM.

NASA used to run very smoothly off of Apples until somebody high up who didn't know how to use them decided to replace them with the "industry standard" Windows systems. An unbelievable amount of Chaos ensued and continues to this day. It contributed in many ways to the down hill slide at the space agency.
Apple computers have got a wonderfully usable GUI which is supported by a hard core Unix OS underneath. If you need to do something serious with an Apple that Unix command line is a pop up terminal away. Gives the machine both grace and power.
When I was in one of the other vendor booths at the National Computer Conference in 1979 Wozniak and Jobs were young guys in the Apple booth, and a young Bill Gates was in the Microsoft Booth. That seems like it was just yesterday. It saddens me to hear of Jobs' resignation - I wish him nothing but the best in the future.

Exactly what did they "revolutionize" sure they made significant contributions.
Their original ideas include the Apple 1 which was a kit computer that had no operating system, but did interface a keyboard and monitor to a micro computer for the first time, though it had been done with mini computers in years prior. The Apple 2 whose only unique feature was a color monitor option.
The Apple one was an enthusiast machine only. The apple II was too expensive for the average person to own.
Most bought home computer: Commodore 64. There is your "revolution" if there was one.

While too much fat in the poop can make it float (and indicate problems), it's not necessarily a danger sign. For healthy folks, floaters also happen when you have a lot of trapped gas. So, if you've recently changed your diet, this can happen. But, if you have floaters all the time, it might be time to get a checkup.
Since we're talking poop, let me recommend a book for anyone with young morons-in-training. Grossology (the science of really gross things) goes into the science behing poop, snot, earwax, slime molds, etc...
Both my kids loved the books (thee about a dozen in the Grossology series). Much to my wife's displeasure (she comes from a family of very well-mannered women), they'd regularly bring up a new gross fact they'd learned at dinner. It also gave them a lot of cred with their friends.
I've given copies to about a half dozen kids (family and friends) for birthday/Christmas presents, and I've never been disappointed by the kids' response to the book.

Sure, and you can install an nice version of X/Unix on a PC and it will run like a top. Had that been what NASA had transitioned to they wouldn't have had the problems they had AND they wouldn't have to deal with a proprietary architecture. Funny thing. Macs run one operating system, no other choices. I can still run DOS 6.22 on a PC if I need a solid embedded system, UNIX flavor if I need reliability, Windows if I need flexibility and open objects.

The Mac makes a poor high performance system as the closed architecture limits configuration possibilities.
The Mac makes a poor enthusiast user system as it's limited enthusiast user functionality requires anyone but the most advanced to adapt to it; rather than it adapting to its user.
The Mac makes a good low user computer. Easy to configure, and works without much trouble.

His obsessive focus on design and usability made tens of millions of people happy and created a lot of value. He clearly was a tremendous motivator of people and knew how to make wise hiring decisions.
If Jobs hadn't existed we'd still have smartphones and pcs and laptops. I think he's accelerated the tablet market a few years by his force of personality. But that would have happened regardless as well.
He's an impressive man. And he's probably suffering a great deal even as I type this. I would have liked to see what he would produce in the next ten years, even if I probably would not have bought it.

My iPhone is indispensable to me. It was my first Apple product, and I love it. I also admire what Steve Jobs has done in terms of pure entrepenurialship (sp?). A business man who came up with a product that people wanted, that worked, he made a ton of money doing it and people never considered themselves "ripped off." Truly a capitalist in an excellent sense of the word.
I know he's had serious and horrible health problems, and wish he and his family nothing but the best.
