— Ace Good stuff from Wynn.
I believe in Las Vegas. I think its best days are ahead of it. But I'm afraid to do anything in the current political environment in the United States. You watch television and see what's going on on this debt ceiling issue....
And I'm saying it bluntly, that this administration is the greatest wet blanket to business, and progress and job creation in my lifetime. And I can prove it and I could spend the next 3 hours giving you examples of all of us in this market place that are frightened to death about all the new regulations, our healthcare costs escalate, regulations coming from left and right. A President that seems, that keeps using that word redistribution. Well, my customers and the companies that provide the vitality for the hospitality and restaurant industry, in the United States of America, they are frightened of this administration. And it makes you slow down and not invest your money. Everybody complains about how much money is on the side in America.
...
The guy keeps making speeches about redistribution and maybe we ought to do something to businesses that don't invest, their holding too much money. We haven't heard that kind of talk except from pure socialists. Everybody's afraid of the government and there's no need soft peddling it, it's the truth. It is the truth. And that's true of Democratic businessman and Republican businessman, and I am a Democratic businessman and I support Harry Reid. I support Democrats and Republicans. And I'm telling you that the business community in this company is frightened to death of the weird political philosophy of the President of the United States. And until he's gone, everybody's going to be sitting on their thumbs.
Yup. The GOP really needs to make this point. It is often said that the GOP loses when it's talking about spending cuts and the debt limit, because it's not talking about jobs, and Obama wants to talk about jobs, so he wins.
So, make the bloody connection. Keep saying you are talking about jobs, over and over again.
Obama's Debt is causing a panic, and panicked businesses and people go into hoarding mode.
Thanks to CDR M, in the sidebar. Also, forgot to H/t Ben for linking the Miniter/Democratic Doom piece, too.

So, make the bloody connection.
This disconnect, if you will, is our main obstacle.
Republicans do a shitty job at 'connecting' to the people, and they do even worse at 'connecting' Obama to Obama's shitty policies and shitty admin.

Debt. Spending. Deficits. Jobs. Regulation. Minimum Wage. Unions.
All of them are unified and to talk about one without thinking about the others is not useful.
Yes, Republicans need to be saying "The debt ceiling is about jobs." But they also need to say, "Spending is about jobs," and "The minimum wage is about jobs," and "over-regulation is about jobs."
We need to be saying, "The only way to get this economy moving again is to get government out of the way- that means reducing spending, reducing taxation and burdensome regulation, and allowing business to do as they see fit.
More taxes will not spur this economy. More regulation will not spur this economy. More government spending will not spur this economy. Expensive mandates will not spur this economy.
If people want to get back to work to support their families, they need to support the Republican proposals to reduce spending, keep taxes as low as possible, and do away with expensive, arcane regulations and expensive mandates."

Easy. Reid didn't use Vegas as a cheap, negative prop in a speech. Obama did. Twice. Nobody likes being spiked. Being spiked by your team mate sucks. Posted by: huerfano at July 19, 2011 08:18 AM (ZJ2JH)
Wynn's a smart guy but it's not really the debt issue that's causing panic in the business community. It's Obamacare.
Cost of capital is so low at present that even a spike in interest rates wouldn't be all that damaging, outside the banking sector of course.
Obamacare, on the other hand, is such an unmitigated disaster it's negatively affecting the job markets as we speak, across all segments of the economy, even before it kicks into gear.
Companies with just over 50 employees are cutting staff to stay under Obamacare's threshold. Companies with slightly less than 50 employees are cutting back to make sure they don't go over the threshold, even at the expense of their own profits. Companies with no realistic chance of getting under the 50-employee threshold nevertheless are cutting back to brace themselves for the higher benefits costs. There are tens of thousands of businesses out there which fall into one of those categories.
What's terribly ironic about this debt ceiling and deficit kerfuffle is that Republicans have allowed themselves to become so distracted they've lost sight of the elephant in the room.
If the GOP runs against Obamacare next year and ties that into job losses there's a chance of unseating Obama and ending this nightmare. If the GOP foams at the mouth about the debt ceiling and deficit, however, at the expense of the key issues of overregulation and jobs, they'll wind up defeating themselves, yet again.

The people are ready to hear the truth. That we are boned and heading for disaster unless we put the chains back on the government monster. But Repubs are afraid to actually say it.
And yea, glad to see AlanG above point the tie in to the minimum wage. Our team should be relentless on that one. It is nothing more than the government drawing a line and saying "Jobs worth less than this minimum wage we are establishing are jobs Americans should not and won't do. Send them overseas, hire illegals, automate them away, we don't care as long as no American has to ever do them again."
They have sawed off the bottom rungs on the ladder to success and are then shocked (shocked I say) when the people at the bottom of the heap start just staying there in welfare instead of moving up over time as they used to. Except of course they are not shocked, it was the desired result.

O'Brien chased Matthews, who has an extensive criminal history - including assault, reckless endangerment and robbery charges, according to court documents - and fought him.
When O'Brien tried wrenching her bag from Matthews' grip, he twisted her right arm and broke her wrist.
O'Brien countered by kicking Matthews in his leg.
A visibly pregnant O'Brien told CBS that Matthews used his forearm to hit her in the abdomen.
That's when she planted a kick that broke Matthews' tibia in two places and sent him limping away, defeated.

We also need someone out there telling people that it's OK to make money. At some point in time we allowed the left to stigmatize profit so that what we have today is a country in which a large number of people want to make more money for themselves but don't want other people making more money than they do.

In my experience, most of the people who say that are lying assholes. I sat with a lovely group who talked about how independant they were, and how they deplored the polarization of politics. One then launched into a list of politicians (all on the right) that they 'hated' because they were 'evil'. They followed up that performance with the teabagger pornagraphic term, which they defended. I noted that such behaviors aren't indicative of moderates. They were some flavor of leftist; they simply didn't want to say that. Trust me when I say that they didn't enjoy me telling them that.
Their version of the political spectrum consists (from Left to right): Lenin, some vague notion of commies(with the same status in realty as the tooth fairy), progressives, wonderful Moderate, Independant people and the right/nazis.

Expensive mandates will not spur this economy, as the President has stated.

O'Brien, whom police said is from Ridley Park, got her bag and was treated for her broken wrist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Police found Matthews lying on the ground on the corner of 62nd and Market, and arrested him after O'Brien identified him.
Matthews was admitted to Hahnemann University Hospital. Police said the man is still in the hospital and will undergo two leg surgeries.
I went to H.S. not to far from Ridley Park (we played them in some sports, even though they were almost twice the size our school was.) Those girls from Ridley were tough. I'm not surprised! 50 is the magic number where small buisness regulations begin to kick in. For example that is where you must have trained first responders on site if you are more than so many feet from a public first responder station (i.e. nearly everywhere).
There are also break points at 100 and 500. Once you get past 500 you are then a "large" company and ALL of the onerous federal regulations are applicable.

Posted by: KG at July 19, 2011 09:10 AM (LD21B)
I have heard this at my own place of employment, and read it in many business pubs -- it's regulation, it's the EPA and IRS on steroids, it's the health-care monstrosity, it's the threat of higher taxes. It's REGULATIONS. It isn't the public debt, per se, that's keeping businesses scared to hire and invest and expand.
You are correct that JOBS, JOBS, JOBS is the winning strategy in 2012. But focusing on debt as the cause of unemployment is a loser with the voters because it's not an obvious causal relationship. Why would cutting govt spending spur job growth, anyway? It won't. In fact, many people are afraid it's going to have the opposite effect, at least in the short term, and you can bet that's what the Dems are going to campaign on.
We HAVE to get debt under control, no doubt. But Jobs will win elections. Debt is a secondary issue (albeit one that resonates well with voters). Focus on Obama's hostility to business and free markets and energy, his fealty to labor and the greens, and don't ever mention one of those things without also inserting the word "jobs" into the message about a hundred times, and the president in 2013 will have an (R) next to his name.
A message about debt dovetails well with the jobs message, so it's not an either-or choice. But Jobs must Message #1. Debt is a close #2.

Harry Reid was Nevada Gaming Commission chairman before he was elected to the Senate. Wynn and his pals made a big investment in Reid and Reid has protected their gaming business in Congress. Sharron Angle called the gaming industry "evil." Not hard to guess who Wynn supported in that race!
Wynn is also a socially liberal Jew, so it should surprise nobody that he voted for Obama. It kills me when people say to someone like this "you voted for this Communist asshole, so STFU." People like Steve Wynn do not read conservative blogs every day. They are busy running their businesses. They thought Obama was just a garden variety liberal, and they loved that he was black. That's pretty much all they knew about him.
There's an old joke from the Nixon law-and-order era that goes, "a conservative is just a liberal who has been mugged." Now it is safe to say that a conservative businessman is a liberal who has been mugged by the reality of Obama's oppressive regulatory state.

I disagree with Steve Winn for the most part. Of course if President Obama did insult Las Vegas then of course Obama should retract that but my problem with Steve Winn are as follows:
1. i do not really believe that he is a democrati businessman. I have friends in Vegas who tell me that Steve Winn is a pretty authoritarian personality type.
2. just because Winn supported Harry Reid does not mean that he's a democrat. Politics makes strange bedfollows and it is possible that Winn could support Harry Reid because Harry Reid is more supportive of Casino business than the republican that was running against Mr .Reid but even though Winn supported Harry Reid he could still be GOP on the rest of his voting and support. Did Winn support Obama ran for president, I do not know.
3. The fact that Winn singles out only Obama to be annoyed at regarding the debt limit talks reeks of extremist right wing fanaticsm on the part of Winn. Look, most Americans want a balanced approached to resolve the debt limit issue, but Winn had no criticsm for the extremist GOP position which would not include tax increases but he did get annoyed by Obama's positions in the debt limit debate so that tells me that not only is Winn not really a democrat but that his political views are extremely extreme right wing. Keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of Americans do not support the GOP position of no new taxes on the rich whereas Winn seems to support that GOP position so this shows that Winn is not a democrat, is not even a moderate republican, but rather an extremist GOP type who likely supports Harry Reid because at the local level Harry Reid is supportive of the casinos better than the republican candidate is.
4. keep in mind that Steve Winn is rich so the tea-party GOP congressmen's position works to help Steve Winn stay richer by protecting him from a tax increase. The likley thing here is that Winn is frustrated because he senses that things might not go his way in the debt debate. He is probably a GOP tea party supporter (regards to the debt limit issue) and he may sense that the tea party is losing ground on the issue given the polls (favoring the president's position) and that Obama is standing up to the GOP thus far. So in his frustration Winn starts whining and griping about Obama and Winn goes so far as to lie and refer to himself as a democrat becuase he supports ONE democrat (harry reid) What a joke!!!! Supporting ONE democrat does not make you a democrat!!!!!! It looks to me like he is just another greedy grubby republican who does not want to contribute to our country's debt problem and he's mad at Obama because he senses that Obama might get some new revenue from people like him - rich people.
5. Obama has a point about business not investing. Businesses are making record profits but they won't hire people. I think that, that shows how greedy and grubby business leaders are, and I also think there might be some collusion/conspiracy going on with that because business leaders have likely intentionally decided collectively to not hire people so they can keep unemployment numbers high in the hopes of making voters vote against Obama at the polls in 2012. That's right, these republican business owners, such as Winn, are colluding to hurt america by not hiring new workers (despirt record profits and lots of money to invest) for the very exact and specific purpose that they want to keep unemployment high so that they can get Obama put out of office, get a republican put in office, and get their taxes lowered.
6. That's right!!!!! That's why business leaders like Winn aren't hiring. It's all about hurting the country by keeping unemployment high unemployment so they can get the democrat out of office and get republicans in office so that the rich can get tax cuts. That's why guys like Winn aren't hiring. It's about artifically keeping the unemployment rate high so they can make voters angry at Obama and get him kicked out of office.
7. Of course guys like Winn and that guy from Home Depot won't admit that business is intentionally colluding to keep unemployment numbers high the proof is right there in front of our faces. The proof is right in Steve Winn's own words. Steve Winn said he, and other business leaders, are holding their money instead of investing and hiring is because they're scared of Obama but that makes no sense whatsoever given that the reason they are scared of Obama is because they won't hire workers. Duh!!! Steve Winn's lying poo doesn't even make sense. Since he knows that the Obama administration wants guys like him to start hiring and since he knows that Obama's mad at guys like him because guys like him won't hire people, why don't Steve Winn, and the guys like Steve Winn, just hire people and get the President off their backs? He says that guys like him aren't hiring because they're scared of Obama but that makes no sense at all because if guys like him would hire people then that is all that Obama is asking of them. By not hiring people they are putting themselves in Obama's crosshair so that shows that their reason for not hiring really has nothing to do with them being scared of Obama. Rather, these business leaders are intentionally damaging by not hiring people (workers they really could use) because they are trying to influence the next election - make voters angry at Obama.
