— Ace This was in the news last week.
The lefty sociologists who concluded this still have to spin for their freaking buddies.
“One possible explanation is that people who are seen or consider themselves beautiful tend to be more anti-egalitarian and rightwing,” Niclas Berggren, one of the three co-authors of the study, told AFP Wednesday.[snip]
Explaining the findings, he said that globally, “the left perhaps traditionally has used a more rational approach.
The right meanwhile, “has been more conscious of the importance of looks,” he said, pointing to the examples of Ronald Reagan and Sarah Palin in the United States.
How does a study about looks provide any clue to the left's supposed use of a "more rational approach"? Seems to me this is as unscientific and emotional as you can get -- evidence supports a conclusion against your buddies, your cohort, so you immediately make stuff up with no evidence behind it to say "but my friends are better in a ll other ways."
"Science." I don't think that word means what you think it means.
Bookworm offers a just-as-scientific explanation:
IÂ’d like to offer a different theory, one that is equally unsupported by fact, but that makes a great deal more sense. My theory is that unattractive people are often angry, unhappy people. They feel as if the world has treated them unfairly. They resent other people for having better looks and, with those better looks, having better luck in life. (As the same article points out, attractive people tend to be more successful.)
Another possibility is that, as Wisconsin has made blindingly clear, that one party is the Party of Government and the other party is the party of those not in government.
Those in the Party of Government prosper by networking with bureaucrats and essentially winning a secret poll of insiders with a vested interest in seeing the Party of Government prosper-- that is, the Party of Government chooses its nominees based less on public acclaim and more in insider-agreements, with unions and bureaucrats, which are never made public. The Party of Government therefore avoids genuine democratic primaries in favor of primaries substantially pre-determined or fixed by secret agreements and arrangements.
The Party of Outsiders, on the other hand, is forced to make a more traditional, transparent, and, ultimately, populist appeal, and looks are in such a traditional appeal more important. Because, unlike the case as with the Party of Government, the unions and bureaucracies haven't made decisions based on information and promises withheld from the government, but must make their appeal more transparently -- this is who I am, this is what I stand for, and, unavoidably, this is what I look like.
Or forget that. I think this dink was right -- this study showing left-wingers are ugly must prove, somehow, they are also rational. Because we all know that being unlovely and unloved promotes rationality and centeredness.

That much stress can wear on one's figure in a number of ways.
However, conservatives basically believe that the whole world is F'd, and the only things we can control are our own actions, so we're a lot more relaxed about it all.

I think their is more to the "happy" angle than you would think on first face. Happy people are attractive, want to be attractive. It has an undeniable effect on how men view women. Liberalism exists based on a strong belief in the utter injustice of free society, and utter personal dislike of political opponents. That goes a long way to make someone a perpetual grump, and physically unattractive.

People who respect themselves, people who have confidence in themselves, tend to be conservative and also tend to take better care of themselves, thus they wind up looking more attractive.
People who don't respect themselves tend to vote liberal. Without mommy or daddy to look after them, they will spend the whole day on the couch eating buckets of haagen-dazs and forgetting to wipe themselves, becoming less and less attractive.

I can be out front shoveling snow for two hours with a smile on my face, glad that at my age I still have the health to do that kind of activity. Plus, I get to socialize with my like minded neighbors who are out there taking care of ourselves, and our loved ones....plus the 80 year old lady across the street who can't shovel any more. And the 83 year old Ukranian neighbor who tries his best after a heart attack two years ago (But we shovel his when he isn't looking).
Then I watch the scrunt across the street, in her early thirties, with the same age useless husband come out, look at all the snow on her car, screw her face into a frown and bitch that someone hasn't shoveled her out. Ugly, short, overweight, and waiting for someone to take care of you is no way to go through life.

I've found even the most plain and homely girl can become attractive with a little effort, a winning personality, and a nice smile.
So I think you are confusing association and causality.
I think anger and jealousy comes first. (How many of us are actually #1 in looks and popularity. Most learn to work with what we have. Hell I've got a nose that can be seen from space)
Then the unattractiveness associated with exuding negative emotion.
Then the joining of groups where anger and unattractiveness are not only the norm but a laudable goal.
In this way I think liberalism attracts the angry, and anger is ugly. It feeds jealousy, and starves desire. It makes complacency and mediocrity riotous, and demonizes initiative and excellence.

Because the political class is distinctly leftwing from the society as a whole.
Republicans tend to be the more conservative members of the political class, but that still makes them left of the average Republican.
As such, they know what they have to say to get elected...but they don't believe it, and therefore won't fight for it.

You did? When?
I was there from late '76 through early '81, during the time when the campus was overrun by UFW agitators and the Bay Area was rocked by the People's Temple and Moscone and Milk slayings. Oh, and the humanities grad students wanted to form a grad students' union, to which those of us in the hard sciences said, "No, thanks, 'cause we've got support $$ and fields of study that come to an end in less than five years."

I tend to think you'll be able to tell whether someone will be liberal or conservative in High School. Not by their looks, or their social status, but by their reaction to adversity and their sense of humor.
I have exactly as much scientific basis for this theory as the authors of the study (that is: none) but I just tend to think that, even as early as HS, the ones who look at bad stuff and think, "Okay, now how do I fix this?" instead of "Hey! This needs to be fixed!" are more likely to turn out conservative.

I think it's true. If I were shallow, and just going on physical appearance, there aren't any Democrat men in government who approach the good looks of Rep. Adam Kinzinger, Rep. Aaron Shock, Rep. Sean Duffy, and Sen. Scott Brown. If I'm not being shallow, and extrapolate confidence and strength of character, no Democrat is hawter than Lt. Col Allen West and WI governor, Scott Walker.
And yeah, I think because liberals are angry all the time, and base everything on emotions rather than facts, it makes them really unattractive.

So, it seems, the Republicans arenÂ’t doing nearly enough. They should be cutting $400 billion in spending and let the private sector reorganize in a reality-based economy.

Arrived in winter quarter 1981. I lived in Barrington Hall. My introduction to Berkeley was my roommate being arrested for blockading the Post Office because Selective Service Registration was a crime against humanity. We have a different set of morals, one that encourages being truthful and kind (among other things). Some Republicans who see Dems lying become frustrated because they don't realize lying, cheating, and stealing is morally right for a Dem. Then there are others who simply won't fight because they frankly don't care. Really depends on the person.

Holy Fartlek! From Lacey's link:
Mr. McClellan grew up practicing martial arts, eventually earning a black belt, and as a college student realized that he had a knack for working with people. He owns Naturally Fit, a personal training and wellness center in Chicago, and now spends part of his week in Washington at Mr. ObamaÂ’s request.
“It was an easy sell for me, because I thought of it as kind of a duty, to serve the president,” said Mr. McClellan, who works out with the first couple, often in the early morning, at the gym in the White House residence. Mr. and Mrs. Obama both try to exercise for at least an hour every day, and Mr. McClellan says he usually sees them two to four times a week, depending on their schedules.
David Axelrod says he lost 25 pounds under McClellan's watch, but that comes at a steep cost for those as environmentally minded as the Obamas: 50,000 lbs of carbon emissions. That's how much carbon emissions are involved in McClellan's flying back and forth every week for a year (according to TerraPass.com).
Where is the media on this outrage? The Obamas are living high off the taxpayer dime, and I for one am getting really sick of it. WTF! I also call B.S. on Michelle working out 1 hour a day 4x a week. From looking at her, you can tell she only works out her arms! Her lower half of her body is a big, fat mess! She just works out the body parts that she exposes to us ad nauseum. The Obamas are the biggest, wasteful frauds.

From someone who knows, you really have to want the degree with the certification if you're going to go that route. Teaching jobs are also hard to come by in some parts of Texas right now, though cities like Houston are still hiring. But you could do it if you really have your mind set on it.

Speaking of stinking hippies:
San Francisco's big push for low-flow toilets has turned into a multimillion-dollar plumbing stink.
Skimping on toilet water has resulted in more sludge backing up inside the sewer pipes, said Tyrone Jue, spokesman for the city Public Utilities Commission. That has created a rotten-egg stench near AT&T Park and elsewhere, especially during the dry summer months.
The city has already spent $100 million over the past five years to upgrade its sewer system and sewage plants, in part to combat the odor problem.
Now officials are stocking up on a $14 million, three-year supply of highly concentrated sodium hypochlorite - better known as bleach - to act as an odor eater and to disinfect the city's treated water before it's dumped into the bay. It will also be used to sanitize drinking water.
That translates into 8.5 million pounds of bleach either being poured down city drains or into the drinking water supply every year.
Bwhahaha! Libtards and their laws of unintended consequences.Posted by: runningrn at February 28, 2011 02:11 PM (ihSHD)
