The official death toll is at about 1,700 now but given reports that 10,000 people are missing from on town alone, that's going to go much higher.
US forces based in Japan are already working to aid survivors and more help is on the way.
As for the nuclear plant...I have no idea. There's simply too many contradictory reports. If anyone has anything new and informative, please put them in the comments.
More challenges: Food shortages starting show up in Tokyo. It's going to be challenging enough to get food into places most impacted by the quakes and tsunami but panic buying in unaffected areas is going to create problems as well.

I'm not sure it'll go that high, but by late Sunday or early Monday we'll be seeing a very dramatic rise. Some of these places are still cut off with no communication.

Unbelieable, heartbreaking devastation. And now the public health aspects will be kicking in with raw sewage, drinking water, disease, infection, etc. So sad.
My girlfriend who works at Microsoft said that the company has not been able to account for all of its employees in Japan yet.

I just added to the post...stores are either closed or out of supplies in Tokyo. That's an area unaffected by the tsunami but the power outages are a huge problem in a modern city of about 13 million people.
Amazingly, it is only going to get worse for a good long while before it gets better.
God help them.

I'm puzzled (but hopeful) at the relatively low numbers I've seen for deaths. As I watched the footage the other night I just kept thinking tens of thousands must have perished.

1. tepco is not highly regarded in Japan. They were caught a while back falsifying their safety records and the gov. made them shut down all their reactors and got really tough with them. My guess is that they have a hard time recruiting good people.
2. they held a news conference last night where the rep kept repeating that they have to study the situation more. 12 minutes of "uh...." and the papers made an issue of it since the company is already a laughingstock, and now it is a catastrophe.
3. I lived near their other plant on the west coast and they had to pay everyone in the region (maybe 35 or 50km radius) an annual hazard pay check ( i think about $150.00)
4. the only reliable info i have is that the rods were 1/2 exposed, and what i know about reactors is that they are probably melting. i don't think that means they are in a puddle in the bottom of the vessel, but they are damaged.
5. the pressure vessel over pressured once, and that was when they let off steam. but now it appears to be sound since it is holding a pretty good pressure level and appears to have not cracked. but it must have leaked since the H2 and radiation got out somehow.
6. the tsunami warning guys keep warning about tsunami's. i get the feeling they are like the kid that empties the wastebasket after an "overflow" emergency that keeps warning people every five minutes just to keep in the game. This is relevant since tepco had to shut down the seawater injection since they can not do that during a tusnami warning ( i guess to keep the radioactive waste from washing ashore but i don't know.)
7. This is really shocking to me. let me explain. In japan the cell towers are all pretty sturdy. like min CN towers. and you can always tell the flood level since they all have their electronics package 5 or 10 meters up the tower above the highest possible flood level. (including backup power) so the Japanese are generally well aware of natures fury. In any city go to a community center and there will be a map of elevation and instructions how to evacuate in case of flood or tsunami. So this is hard to understand..
8. I have not seen this reported in english so i say here. These towns mostly(?) had sea walls and they drill on closing the doors in case of tsunami. This is very sad, since i have seen it on tv many times and the team that closes the doors have to push from seaward side. and then climb up stairs to get back onto land side.Unfortunately the walls were much too low for this tsunami. my guess is these teams all died. very heroic and sad.
you could see on the early footage and on fox they called it a causeway, but they are sea walls. like a dike. and they may also now be keeping the water in some of these towns.

The first place in the video is Minamisanriku, popluation about 20K
The only close to good news about the whole thing is that CNN and probably others were mistakenly reporting that this was Minamisoma, which has a population of 70,000. That place is reported to have lost 1800 homes, but given all the confusion of the names, who knows. There's video on You Tube of CNN saying that the whole city of 70,000 was gone...but it's the smaller place. I checked it myself on Google Earth and found one of the buildings they were showing.
God forbid the media could have sorted it out with the Intertubes yesterday or mentioned the confusion today.

Also remember that Japan is volcanic and very mountainous. each town is built around whatever flat land they can find, usually the alluvial plain where the river meets the sea. to go from town to town the roads and rails cling to the side of mountain over the sea, or tunnel through (actually, i have never ridden north east coast road, but most other coasts i know this to be true) So with the nuclear plant blocking the coast road, there is little access to the other towns. very bad. there are some roads inland, but they are mountain roads and possibly damaged. this is like the ca coast after mudslide on devil's slide.
10. I always think of japanese as holding onto whatever corners of land they can find on their island as the earth and ocean try to shake them off. I had one friend though tell me that without the disasters it would not be japan. no onsen, no fishing, no adversity to make them strong, etc.
11 also, japan culture is very independent and property rights are very very strong (check out narita terrorists if you doubt) and partly this is result of so much independence. it is the perfect country for "federalism" with strong local governance. this is because so many towns are so isolated and historically could defend against tyrants.

They aren't going to guess. They can only go with confirmed missing or bodies found. Even in Minamisanriku, they are just talking about 'unaccounted'. Hopefully many people weren't in their homes, but were at school or work inland and uphill. There's a big school up on a hill (pics of it have SOS written in the parking lot).
Oh, and there's a bunch of snow on the ground there, which just doesn't help at all.

I dunno, those people living in the low areas felt the massive quake... So they had to be immediately worried that a tsunami might be next.
I've seen/read that they had only 10 minutes in some places.
And that it went inland 10K (6.2 miles), though that's such a round number that I have suspicions regarding from which orifice it may have been pulled.
Water went up to the 4th floor of that hospital? Who would have thought the 3rd floor wasn't safe?
The first footage I saw of it, on CNN just with the live feed from a Japanese station, showed debris on the roof of a 2 story building. Yikes.

Yes, they all drill on evacuation. Schools for young children have slide from second floor for kids to escape, they put on protective hat and slide down to sensei at bottom. then they go to community center to evacuate up to roof. but i think many of these towns that was not high enough. also, it is not like usa where you jump in car and jump on highway. many people do not have cars and roads are not built for such traffic so if you can not get to high roof you are swimming. also many old people are in these rural towns and they often do not drive at all.

The American Red Cross is generally your best bet. Just make sure it isn't the International Red Cross.

14. Most heating in japan is by kerosene. they have these extremely advanced heaters that monitor Co2, turn off when bumped, start and stop without oder,... actually very nice. So most people use them to heat.( it is that or electric from their remote condenser air conditioning unit that you may have seen as they are also available in the US now.) So they only heat the room they are in as needed. (newer commercial buildings have central heat, older ones have no heat.) So there were many fires, and i suspect this was spilled kerosene. i think the heaters were ok, but people also have plastic jerry cans of kerosene in the house and i suspect they ruptures, the oil floated, and then somehow caught.

Both. I lived in rural western japan, and there is almost always a child, nephew, uncle, etc. that moved to Tokyo. I am sure that nearly all families will have someone to notice they are gone.
Often the child(ren) leaves and the old farmer parents are left in the rural town alone. that is very sad to think about though. I was friends with several old couples that owned local shops and they all had kids but they were far away so they would dote over my daughter when we went in.

Japan has a early-warning system for earthquakes.
Do we know if it worked as it was meant to? Read this article it really explains how these early warning systems work. This article was supposed to be published next month in Scientific American, but they published early because of the earthquake in Japan:
Japan’s system, which went live in 2007, makes heavy use of personal technology. Alerts go out not only on television and radio but through special receivers in homes, offices and schools. JapanÂ’s experience shows that earthquake warning systems do not just help protect lives, they also help the bottom line. In 2003 two earthquakes near Sendai, Japan, caused more than $15 million in losses to the OKI semiconductor manufacturing plant because of fire, equipment damage and loss of productivity. The plant had to be shut down for periods of 17 and 13 days, respectively, following the quakes. The company then spent $600,000 to retrofit the factory and to install a warning system. In two similar earthquakes since, the factory suffered only $200,000 in losses and 4.5 and 3.5 days of downtime.

I can not find photos, but the preschools all have giant tubes for the kids to slide from second floor in case of emergency. they give the children these pillows to strap on their heads and they go down slide. the pillow really is a pillow, lie for a small chair. and the little kids look so fucking cute. The slide really is a slide and a lot of fun.
You can see them in tokyo residential areas. the teachers have the carts and they push the very young in the cart (maybe 4ft x 3ft w/ four wheels and high walls) with the older kids in a string behind all holding hands as they go to park or wherever.
If it is drill, the kids have their pillows and the teachers have hard hat. But where could they go?

On another site someone pointed out that there would be tons of hazardous waste to clean up from factories, vehicles, etc. And then there's the sewage.

yeah I usually end up with lake front property during the bigger storms. I don't get flooded though, my yard has an upper and lower section, so the lower section gets the water. We put a smoke detector right by the stove in our kitchen and everytime I use the oven, or toaster, or skillet, or griddle, the fucker goes off. My kids always say 'Mommy is cooking' when it does'.
We were at a store a few months ago and the sd went off (accident) and both my kids starting running for the door shouting: 'Run to the door, mommy isn't cooking this time!'

After a period of time the pressure in containment will become severely elevated because the cooling systems are probably not functioning right now either for containment.
That is why they are having to periodically vent the containment to the atmosphere. There were reports this morning that the unit 1 containment was up over 100 psi in pressure. That is far above design pressure for these things.
I am glad that I no longer have to go to Simulator training and get tested on these Kobiashi Maru scenarios because I can see a whole new host of them coming out in the next training cycle.

If you prepare for disasters, it behooves you not to tell others about your preparations or be ostentatious about them. In an emergency, panicked people will accuse you of "hoarding" and want the supplies you paid for and laid by well ahead of time. In fairness, the guy did very well in the primary debates from just a personality/likability standpoint. He could be funny completely off-the-cuff and without a script.As far as his record...especially his record with anything other than social conservatism (and even with social conservatism considering the people he let out of prison, though apparently with some people that's not enough)...well, that's a problem.

Certainly not good but as long as the core and reactor vessel are in OK shape I think it's much better than it could be. I think. I'm pretty ignorant about nearly all of this.
"Meltdown" is getting tossed around alot and thought it doesn't really have any technical meaning I think it brings to mind the whole damn thing melting and going to hell which is NOT happening.
