Three years ago, Obama won blue-collar Macomb with 53% of the vote to Republican John McCain's 48%. At this point, a Free Press poll conducted last week by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA shows all three of the top Republican contenders -- Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain -- with a lead on Obama in the county.The poll's sample of 600 likely voters statewide includes only a sliver from Macomb County, meaning any results there come with a whopping 14-percentage-point margin of error. But even controlling for that, the Republican contenders still lead the president. Romney, who grew up in Bloomfield Hills, would still lead by at least 20 points.

I think it's interesting. I remember it so well.
It was sometime in 1989. They were doing a story on the Tax Reform Act of 1986, which didn't kick in until later. They interviewed a couple that hated it. The couple lost the interest deduction for their boat, credit cards, vacation home, etc. The story was typically one-sided.
At the time, I am sitting there with 3 small children, no boat, no second home, no credit card debt and loving the fact that I am saving >$300 per month in federal taxes. That could have been the first time I screamed at the TV.

That's what I thought, but the entire VA General Assembly was just up for election/re-election and we only gained two R senators when the conservatively optimistic prediction was five. The majority of the Rs we do have are RINOs. It's hard to fix stupid.

Yes, they "simplified" the taxes by lowering the rates and getting rid of a bunch of deductions, But s soon as the Dems were in charge again they raised the rates back up and still had got rid of the deductions.

If it salves the wound at all, we can point to the gerrymandering that went on for the Senatorial seats this time. Apparently, the Senate was particularly bad since it was controlled by the Dems; the House was much better. For example, my district was redrawn to contain a big chunk of Alexandria voters, who are bluer than an OWS protester without a tent. Had they left my district alone, we would have won hands down. The down side for the Dems is that there are probably newly vulnerable districts, since some of their reliable voters have been moved into districts that are trending GOP.

I don't know why we are part of Michigan. Most people are Packers fans (go Lions), and we get the same weather as Minnesota. In fact, people in the lower peninsula don't even claim us! If you talk to anybody in the lower peninsula, and they talk about "going up north", they mean Traverse City or Cheboygan. The northern part of Michigan below the bridge.
Why Stupak was in office for so long is that the Upper Peninsula is large (all 7 of the smaller states could fit in it with room left over), but it is unpopulated. We all share an area code, and there are less that 200,000 people. And yes, lots of people drink and don't vote, so anybody who gets elected up here is in a pretty safe seat. But Banishek seems to be taking his job seriously.
BTW, I think Perry would do as well as Romney here. Michigan does not really claim Romney.

The Dems in the Senate did the redistricting for the Senate, and the plan they came up with was the most optimistic for them keeping control of the Senate. They threw GOP members into the same district, then placed some of the newer GOP Senators into districts with very senior and very conservative D Senators. The next election will bring the GOP into absolute control of the Senate because some of those older guys probably have lost the fire for another hard run
Don't forget, the GOP picked up a handful of seats in the House to move their majority up to 66 seats. That is the big deal.
20 years ago the Dems held a 31-9 majority in the Senate, and about 70-30 in the House. This is huge what has happened. Just because they didn't get the 5 seats that was probably a bit too over optimistic.

You are so right about democrats and union people in Michigan being different than other states! Supposedly there was a push to have an OWS event blocking bridges last week, but they got a pitiful turn out. Most people in Michigan (Not including Detroit) want to work, and do not want to stop other people from working.
I did not know how the UP got to be part of Michigan. Lots of people up here have bumper stickers and shirts that say "Free the UP", and, like I said, there are more Packers fans than Lions fans.

I drove up to the U.P. on a Memorial Day weekend some years ago and was impressed with the natural beauty. I was also impressed by the abundance of Canadian flags that were flown under the Stars and Stripes. Not sure what the protocol is there.

The U.P. is really nice, even in the winter. It is true that there is a lot of drinking, but there is also a lot of freedom. Most of the people who go to college up here end up staying. Since the UP is so big, and the population so small (200,000 people), it is similar probably to Alaska. We always laugh when the college kids come up as freshmen and find out that they can have bonfires on the beaches, and surf in Lake Superior, and bring dogs anywhere, because they had no idea there was anywhere like this. We do get snow, but because we do, the counties know how to handle it. We have bulldozers for snow plows, and people bike all year, as the streets are always cleared. The part you may not like, however, is that up here everybody talks like Sarah Palin. Nobody up here would ever say she has an accent!

The primary difference between this and other joint select committees is that the Senate would not be able to filibuster. Otherwise, you see a number of joint select committees for some incredibly weighty issues. A majority of the standing committees we have today were not established until the 1800s or 1900s.

This is not news to me, nor to the local Republicans here in Michigan. I have posted it here before Michigan is in play big time, and looks likely to go red. Lots of those Reagan Republicans Democrats are unhappy with the current administration and the local Dem party.
And Pete is chasing Debbie, catching up and closing the gap with momentum. There is a lot of strength here in the TP alliances, and all of us are pushing hard. It seems to be working.

Every so often a statehood fevah grips the U.P. and there's talk of forming the state of Superior by breaking away from the parasites and leeches in the rest of Michigan. Of course the parasites won't let go of any territory that has the riches of the U.P. especially since it's so lightly populated. There's copper, iron ore, lumber, and it's incredibly beautiful too.

Pete Hoekstra would be an excellent senator. He's smart, honest, and well-respected. When he was in Congress, he was probably about the best man working in Washington (in my humble opinion).
He would have been a great governor, but the idiot Devoses inexplicably backed scumbag publicity hound Mike Cox, who promptly went on attack against Hoekstra and handing the election to Rick Snyder.
If there are people here who understand Michigan politics, they know how the Devoses (pyramid scheme founders: Amway) broke with John Engler and basically ran the Michigan GOP into the wilderness.
I've voted GOP in every election, but I have a very, very hard time pulling the lever for Devos-backed candidates. It's hard to see these guys without thinking PLUTOCRACY.
