Sunday Afternoon Matinee: The Magnetic Monster
— rdbrewer

This is a classic B-movie starring Richard Carlson. Quick, which actor is Richard Carlson; which is Kevin McCarthy, and which is Hugh Marlowe?

Yes, back in the days when all B-movie actors appeared to be related. The Magnetic Monster was a prophetic movie in that it dramatized what will happen one day when the Large Hadron Collider at CERN finally creates a black hole.

The scenes of the underground magneto-dynamo "Delta-tron" are stock footage taken from the German science fiction thriller Gold (1934). Some trivia from Wikipedia:

The German film GOLD was banned in the USA due to the belief that it depicted a functional nuclear reactor Â… and the Nazis had it. It was feared that this would convince Americans that it was impossible to oppose Hitler due to the Third Reich's clear scientific advantage over us. This was clearly forgotten since most of the footage of the "nuclear reactor" was incorporated into MAGNETIC MONSTER and it was released without any problem.

YouTube movie below the fold in five parts. And remember, if it weren't for B-movies, there would be no A-movies. Think about it.

Edited: I removed the other four YouTube players since you can access parts two through five in the YouTube player above--and because of potential slow-loading problems here at the HQ. The player displays a link at the end of each part.

1 The Phantom Planet movie on the sidebar looks LOLful as well. The McNugget 'stroid attacked by flaming milkbones, indeed. With that footage replayed at least thrice that I counted.

Uh, I don't think that Americans were afraid of the mighty Nazi war machine in 1953.

4 A note about the term 'B-movie'. It referred to the second, shorter, cheaper film on a double-bill. The other feature was the A-movie.

In olden days, movie theaters ran cartoons, news shorts, serials, A-movies, and B-movies. A-movies were the prestige productions with big name movie stars.

That's why Ronald Reagan sometimes bristled at being called a B-movie actor. He was rarely top-billed, but he was always in A-movies.

Huh?  The German film from which The Magnetic Monster took some of its footage, Gold, was made in 1934 and that was the film  (Gold) which was banned in the US during WWII.

From the IMBD site for Gold -  The sets are breathtaking (for its time) and look very real- so real in fact, that during WWII the Americans confiscated a copy of this movie to find out how advanced the Germans use of radioactivity really was. For fans of this genre, this is a must.

43 The "unPC" toons of the 1930s-50s survive on youtube. I am a reactionary so of course I've seen a lot of them. I am here to report that you are not missing much. Most of them are ignorant of the cultures they are being "unPC" about and, so, suck. South Park puts them to shame.

The propaganda films of the early 1940s are an exception to this... but then, there's enough Germans in America that the authors knew what was going on in Europe and understood their target.

I'm not in a urban area now, but when I was in Toledo it had that stuff.  Now the local theater doesn't have any of that all it has is a "I love sunsets, don't talk during the movie" thing that is older than I am, a "Let's all go to the Lobby" singing commercial that is older than my parents, and a "please turn off all Cellular phones and pagers" screen.  Then it goes right to the trailers and feature.  Maybe one of the few saving graces of having a small outdated theater.

Did some quick internet browsing just now and the name Eric Fleming popped up, another B-lister from the 50s, with this interesting biographical info about an incident that happened to him while in the Merchant Marine during World War II:

Quote:

"During his tenure, he was seriously injured when the iron block he was lifting slipped and crushed his face. Multiple rounds of plastic surgery gave him a handsome visage but left him with limited facial gesturing ability."

Huh.  So that was the explanation for his oddly frozen-like onscreen persona.

They do make external switch boxes you can buy that would allow you to do this. So you'd hook the box into your tv's port, and all your various inputs to the switchbox.  I don't think they're remote controlled though so you'd have to manually select which source you want your tv showing.

176 Every weekend in the 50s had its own monster movie on at the local theater...rodan, mothra, godzilla, them, and on and on.

There was one about giant mutant caterpillars eating people in a remote southern town.  In one scene, a cop patrolling a lonely bridge is suddenly eaten...scared the living crap out of me.

I saw the film again as an adult...it was a white sock over a guys hand that they moved in front of the camera to make it look large.  The actor jumped out of the way while the sock was in front of the lens.

It is difficult to describe how disappointed this made me feel.  I worried about that guy for years,  Getting eaten by a giant tube sock just didn't have the same feel.
