— Dave in Texas Matthew Yglesias gets smacked by a couple of punks walking home, which leads to a "policy observation".
higher density helps reduce street crime in an urban environment in two ways. One is that in a higher density city, any given street is less likely to be empty of passersby at any given time. The other is that if a given patch of land has more citizens, that means it can also support a larger base of police officers.
I'm sure he's smarter than me, because I don't even understand his point. There's a reduced street crime rate in urban environments other than where he happened to be walking, because of witnesses or something, and also more citizens of said urban area mean more cops, also not helpful with his particular incident.
How do you make this leap?
Slublog pointed out higher population density leads to higher crime because of the anonimity factor. In rural areas, you are more likely to be shot identified. He emailed me this (but not the LINK, jerkwad), from a Harvard economist, so I'm just putting it out there, not saying the guy knows anything.
Informal community sanctions may be as important as formal, legal sanctions in eliminating crime. Urban anonymity makes it hard to enforce sanctions (Wilson and Herrnstein 1985). Likewise, the communities that would enforce any sanctions may be weaker in cities because people in the cities are more transient or more anonymous and therefore more likely to be free riders (see Wirth 1938; Putnam 1993).19 Glaeser (199formalizes some of these arguments and presents evidence suggesting that social cohesion appears to decline in large cities.
The point being, Yglesias has it exactly backward. Social mores repress criminality because of the likelihood of being caught and held accountable for your actions. Not masses of humanity in the teeming streets, or extra cops.
We email shit like this to one another on Sunday afternoons because we're idiots, and also Andy started it so there.

I think he's got it completely backwards.
Wasn't there some study decades ago where they created an environment for rats that allowed them X amount of space per animal, then reduced the space by X-1 and observed, at some point, rapid escalation in antisocial behavior?

I live outside a rural community in Central Ohio and there's never been a single homicide since the founding of the village in 1838.
Petty crimes here and there, yes, but that's it.
A neighborhood in the country is measured in square miles, not apartment buildings.

This is a valid point, but the anonymity actor greatly overrides the increased volume of police officers because, as the saying goes, "where's a cop when you need one?" London is one of the most heavily monitored places in the world via camera feeds and has a considerably sized police force, but it still a hot-bed of crime.

You know what people do when they have money? They buy land. Therefore, it is likely that those people who live in especially dense populations don't have money.
And people without money gain more marginal utility from crime than those who do not. Which doesn't make poor people criminals, but does incentivize them to crime to a greater degree.

Seattle is a case in point that more people and more police officers don't lead to less crime, but more crime being allowed to be freely committed without police intervention. there was an article in local media a month ago about how the police have pretty much stopped responding to all the shoplifting calls. They've also stopped doing much about home burglaries unless it is a home invasion where someone is hurt. And, don't get me started on the utter lack of concern for crimes at bus stops, in the bus tunnel, at park and rides.

It sort of seems self evident to me (but I did not graduate from an Ivy League school and thus am at a disadvantage), is that the default anonymity that is an intrinsic component of urban high density living leads to a lessening of behavioral standards, simply because it is virtually impossible to be recognized/identified in "urbia". George Will wrote a piece years ago where he mentioned that in the original small community, your ability to get a job at the mill might well be influenced by which church you went to (or didn't attend). It is certainly possible to quibble with the potentially discriminatory aspects of this (now lost) ability to hire as one saw fit, but in a small town, you knew you were hiring not only the individual but, in a sense, his family and their standards as well.

And, you can't force community dammit. Just because you shove everybody into a 30 story high apartment building and make them all have to walk everywhere doesn't mean you create a community bond.
I am sick to death of liberals thinking that you can force community if you just get people to live a certain way.

I had a good friend in New York City
He never called me by my name, just hillbilly
My grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a businessman
He used to send me pictures of the Broadway nights
And IÂ’d send him some homemade wine
But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For 43 dollars my friend lost his life
Id love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes
And shoot him with my old 45
Cause a country boy can survive

The first mistake he's making is that he assumes crime density is absolute and does not vary with changes in popoulation density. If there are more people to be observers, there are alos more people to be perps and vics.
The second mistake he's making is that police prevent crime. This is rarely true. It was true in New York in the 2000s, but I don't think that's something you can assume universally.
Posted by: Truman North at May 15, 2011 12:24 PM (K2wpv)
"People tend to be followers and will only get involved if they witness another person getting involved. What results is a group of people witnessing a crime and wondering why nobody is helping."
Similarly, in high-crime urban areas, many people witness a crime, but no one comes forward to ID any suspects. This is for fear of becoming targeted by the thugs who roam freely in their neighborhoods.
So much for densely populated areas being naturally safer eh?

It not even clear it was true in New York in the 2000s. The drop in crime was accompanied by some pretty big demographic changes: There just aren't as many people in the age ranges that tend to produce criminals.

No shit. During Katrina, residents knew three days out that a major hurricane was bearing down on them.
They could have packed valuables and walked out of harm's way but instead, they sat on their asses, lost everything and bitched about how the government left them to die.

I live by myself on the outskirts of town, but in an area that is more country than city. I am much safer than my best friend who lives in the middle of her city. There's no way anyone could break into my home when I'm not here. My neighbors in front of me and to one side would see something or hear something out of place, and be damn sure to call the cops, or even confront the asshole/s attempting to do anything.
Now, my friend experiences wierd shit almost every week. People walk through her yard at all hours of the day and night. She has been awakened on more than one occassion with her dog freaking out, because someone was standing in her yard. She's had people run from her carport when she turns on the light. Who knows what they were up to or contemplating doing. If she didn't have a dog that alerted her there's no telling what could have happened.
I've lived in big cities in several states, and there's no way as a single woman I would do it again. MY is a stone cold idiot. I wish I could have been there to see him get his ass whooped.

David Mamet via the Weekly Standard
Higher ed, he said, was an elaborate scheme to deprive young people of their freedom of thought. He compared four years of college to a lab experiment in which a rat is trained to pull a lever for a pellet of food. A student recites some bit of received and unexamined wisdom—“Thomas Jefferson: slave owner, adulterer, pull the lever”—and is rewarded with his pellet: a grade, a degree, and ultimately a lifelong membership in a tribe of people educated to see the world in the same way.

Pop. around 2,000 . We get around 3 murders a year .80% of the victims and perpetrators are black .
While exiting the Family Dollar a few weeks ago two young crack whores motherfucked me because they almost walked into the door as I opened it . They were probably visiting from out of town as they didn't seem local . Of course I downplayed the incident as it happened by politely questioning " What there fuckin' problem was ?" . Hi jinks ensued .....The whole scene occurred on main street in full view of the citizens .
Then there was the time that a ,just off the chain gang yard bird , bummed a cig from me . While shaking one out for him a second cigarette dropped onto the front seat of my truck seat . He went to grab that one while saying he'd just take one for later, too . I reckon he thought I was a scared white guy .Well , as sometimes happens , despite my retiring nature I declined to provide him with that second smoke and told him to " get the fuck outta ' my face " , while looking him right in the eye . Kindly but firm , is my motto .
I refuse to be intimidated on my turf .

Meghan McCardle - writer at The Atlantic and a pretend right winger.... hates Sarah Palin though (I guess so she can crack jokes at the cocktail parties with her left wing friends)
and
Peter Suderman - works as a right wing writer.
who apparently are a couple.
I laugh at how stupid the American people are who believe anything they read in the media as being anywhere near the truth.
You have a wacko left wing hater visiting his friends, a couple who project the image of being Conservatives... Peter working with The American Conservative and Freedomworks...
is this normal? a left wing wacko who attacks anything to the right - socializing with friends who say they are right wingers and Conservatives? WTF is that about....
other than wake up you fools out there... it is a game. Left wing - right wing... who the f--k cares... it is all about where you can make the money.
Prime example.... Arianna Huffington who was a staunch hard line Democrat in her youth, then married a super wealthy California Republican politician. She was on all the talk shows and panels as a Conservative soldier, defending the right and attacking the left. Then when it came out that her husband was bisexual and active at it, she divorced him for a lot of money and guess what... she had an awakening and became a left winger again. Got funding from the far left wing wealthy people and started Huffington Post.
Look, politics is a way for a lot of people to take your money in contributions after they get you all worked up about the other side and then make a damn good living off it. Same with the left and right media.

The biggest thing I noticed in South Korea. Teenage girls walking alone on backstreets 10 PM or 11 PM at night (if they had detention) in their schoolgirl uniforms.

Isn't it odd how these a-political and bipartisan groups such as Third Way and No Labels have the uncanny knack of always agreeing with Obama & the Democrats?

William F. Buckley, Jr. was friendly with many left-wingers. Rick Brookhiser, WFB's one-time heir presumptive, is married to a lefty.
It's a left-wing trope that the personal is political and that politics is everything. Conservatives understand that politics is secondary to culture and social relations.

my best friend calls himself a communist. Its hilarious because hes got extensive investments and is very conservative socially and religiously. I suspect he calls himself one because his dad was one. And dads dead and he loved him. WELL HES THE WORST COMMUNIST EVER.
he is however one of the best friends you could ever wish to have. Some lefties just dont know what they REALLY are. Theres an American Spectator article about "the Turning of David Mamet" and how he went from a self avowed brain dead lefty to realizing he'd always been really kind of conservative. Theres lots and LOTS of people like that walking around. Mostly indoctrinated since childhood by schools that "right is evil" they mouth the right words, try not to be evil and live rather conservatively.
i cut such people much slack.

OT: Anyone have a good pulled pork recipe they'd like to share?
Get a pork shoulder...pat it dry...rub it w/mustard....put a nice spicy dry rub on top of that (I am using a really hot habanero rub I got in Vancouver last fall)..let it sit for a few hours..
...get your smoker grill hot first..I use a Brinkman that I picked up new for about $35
...smoke it using hickory (or your preferred smoke wood) using chunks!!!...not chips...smoke 1.5 hours for every pound of meat....longer if you like it really tender...DO NOT LIFT LID until you're ready to take it off..
...make sure to use a thermometer and make sure the meat is at least 165..I like to get it up closer to 200...that way it just falls apart

That shooting took place in the tense neighborhood of Silwan in East Jerusalem, where violence regularly breaks out between Palestinian stone throwers and Israeli police and Jewish settlers.
Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of the state they intend to establish in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Essentially, IIRC, in The Death and Life of Great American Cities, she argues that when neighborhoods mix both reasonably low density (for an urban area) population with a plethora of small businesses, even a low income area with lots of transients can develop enough of a sense of community that they know and watch out for each other, and immediately note any outsiders.
Meanwhile, progtards like Yglesias, who are busily moving into the new highrise apartment blocks built in formerly low density neighborhoods (like Long Island City), are too busy trying to score stupid debating points against suburbs and small towns to even notice they are creating new crime zones.

Hey Matt. This is what you get for living in a dump of a city and not carrying a gun.
Shaddup.
I live in a town of 600. Everyone leaves their cars running when they go in the post office. Young girls and elderly people walk the streets alone at all hours with no problems. A lot of people never lock their doors, and leave them standing open all over town on a typical summer day. Since you know the cars at most houses, you also know the people aren't home.
Try that shit in your superior city, Matt.

In the country if your house is on fire or you need a ride into town your likely to rely on a neighbor. Even those you may have bad blood with will eventually come to your rescue during some sort of storm or wildfire and vice versa. Things city people only experience during severe once every 50 year type events. Rural living truly does create a superior life expereince on many levels that city life squashes. Notice crazy enviro terrorists come from suburbs and cities not small towns. Or to quote Herbert, "polish from the cities and wisdom from the desert."
Cities and their daily reality create more lefties then academia and the MSM combined. You step over a homeless person while simultaneously being passed by a guy in a 250k car, the world will feel all out of wack and in need of justice. You see 500 people a day but one tree and someone cuts that one tree down it will feel like an atrocity.
Geoffrey West did the numbers here (warning NYTimes link)
http://tinyurl.com/3wtfpty
or for lighter reading this Cracked.com article also covers it.
http://tinyurl.com/48d2vjn
With the internet we have a first in history opportunity to dismantle and suck the momentum out of cities. If even 10% of modern jobs can be done over the internet. And we get fast cheap internet into rural areas. Then small towns that have been in a recession since the 70's can start to have money flow into them again. The realities and healthier balance of rural living will constantly undermine leftiest psychosis among other things.
The numbers I have seen (that parallel with Australias current project) we could have given the entire country something like 100mb internet for 30$ a month for 1/10 the the cost of the stimulus. Even doubling the cost 1/5 the cost of the stimulus would revitalize Americas rural communtiy and the numbers of those who think like in terms along conservatives. Past projects to revitalize rural America were high cost low benefit project like road work, manuf plants, and shipping hubs. The internet for the cheap cost of cable run down the roadways could have an enormous amount of fortuitous side effects. Seriously even Australia is 10-20 years ahead of us on this.

Grow up and yes, I mean that in a mental sense not a physical one. Go read something without your idiot tinted lenses on. From postmodernism, capitalism emerged, something your little country of America, can't seem to do without so get your facts right. It has NOTHING whatsoever to do with 'right or wrong'. I live in a town of 600. Everyone leaves their cars running when they go in the post office.
Even in the border town of 35,000 I lived in, people still did that. Car thefts started going up one year* and so the police started an educatiion campaign to get people to stop leaving their keys in the car while they were at Walmart and had a bunch of packages in the back.
Rates dropped back down.
*If you car was stolen, you never saw it again because it was over the border in a few minutes.
My favorite crime wave was the one where someone broke into houses in the middle of the night, grabbed the car keys and took the car. Very polite not to disturb people or anything.

A strange assertion, to say the least, about a movement that emerged a century after Adam Smith (at the earliest) and even then only in reference to art. Economically, it's been described as "the dominant cultural logic of late capitalism." (Fredric Jameson)
But I guess I, too, have my idiot tinted lenses on, so oppressive, patriarchialist, subtextual notions like chronology and cause-and-effect still hold small over my tiny, "untter moron" mind. And to think, I walk by the Humana Building a couple of times a week. You'd think the subdialectic paradigm would rub off on me better.

OT, but I had nothing(and no one) to do last night, so i watched the entire SNL.
It was pretty bad as expected, and it's still like 30-40% political skits, but the opening Obama skit was pretty funny.
It essentially made fun of how he says nothing but "Bin Laden" on the campaign trail.
It wasn't harsh and biting in the same way Bush's were, but it's still a solid jab at Obama.
I was pleasantly suprised to see it. Obviously the rest of the show was anti republican, as expected

Not only does he dress the part, Mark Newton knows the law. In fact, an exhaustive Star-Ledger review of his court filings shows that for at least 19 years he has made Superior, chancery, federal and municipal courtrooms his virtual offices, representing himself in hundreds of court battles — though he has no license to practice law.
His specialty? Avoiding eviction. And he is relentlessly effective.
...Neighbors, judges, landlordÂ’s family members and attorneys all have found themselves in NewtonÂ’s crosshairs. If there is a more active pro se litigant in New Jersey, no one has heard of it. Mark Newton is the pro se king.
"He learned to work the system in such a way that he could take me to several different courts,Â’Â’ said Karyn Stewart, who claims she spent $5,000 in attorney fees trying to evict Newton. "ThereÂ’s probably not a landlord in Essex County who doesnÂ’t know Mark Newton. Somebody has got to put a stop to him.Â’Â’
The Newton system, according to court documents and dozens of
interviews with adversaries, goes something like this: The 51-year old
Newark man moves his family into an apartment or house, and soon stops
paying rent. He then complains about unsavory living conditions that,
landlords say, he created. At some point, his attack escalates and
conditions in the rented apartment or house
worsen, lawyers and landlords say. Newton continues to complain. Next,
lawyers and landlords say, he calls code enforcement and accuses
landlords of renting substandard housing.
From there, the legal battle is on.
It starts in municipal court, where landlords must answer NewtonÂ’s alleged code violations. Eventually, the fight moves to eviction proceedings in the Landlord/Tenant Section of state Superior Court.

Isnt' postmodernism just another name for malaise?
It goes much deeper, psychologically, than that. All the way to the hollow core of shallow people who seem willing to believe any trendy thing in order to "look hip" to their buds.
That comment just reinforced everything that's wrong with it.

Richard Clarke To Bill 'You're not Christian if you're happy OBL is dead' Maher: Bush Deserves Zero Credit For Finding Bin Laden
“I don’t know why that’s controversy? The man did nothing about Bin Laden until 9/11. And after 9/11 he kind of did it for a few months – kind of. He sent troops into Afghanistan, but didn’t tell them to get Bin Laden.”
Clarke reminded everyone that the CIA was ordered fifteen years ago to get Bin Laden, and argued that if Bush hadn’t shifted the focus to Iraq during his presidency, we would have captured or killed Bin Laden much sooner. Although many claim it was a “mosaic” of intelligence gathered throughout both administrations that resulted in learning Bin Laden’s whereabouts, it seems Clarke is not eager to allow Bush any part in the celebration.

Purists won't like it but this is what we do.
1. 4-5 lb pork shoulder roast in crockpot on low for 6-8 hours. Season with salt and pepper.
2. Pull roast out, shred, drain about half of the fat and juices out of crockpot.
3. Put shredded meat back in crockpot, add BBQ sauce, mix well and cook on low for another 30-45 minutes.
4. Buns, slaw, etc. for condiments.
The pulled pork sandwich for nonpurists.

Liberals want to re-form society into nothing but cities. They hate suburbs, or even worse, rural areas.
I see it all the time locally when I read the local "atlernative" newspaper (by the way, I'm not sure what it is "alternative" to, since it says exactly what the mainstream paper says, just with a little more vitriol). They constantly have editorials from people talking about how horrible the suburbs are and how everyone should move into the city to make the city better.
Part of it is that they realize their tax base left the City b/c of all the b.s. liberal schemes City gov't gets into and they need the money. Part of it is that the City School are abysmal and they want the good students back so that they can claim their liberal school schemes work. Part of it is that the burbs tend to vote republican, and they want to dilute that vote. Part of it is gaia worship and desire to force everyone to use mass transit.
But I think the biggest part of it is the belief that the City is where "culture" is, and where "smart people" live. Thus, everyone living outside of the City is a hick and ignorent and needs to be re-educated in the City.
