(on a purely pretty note, I like the cheerleader's white shiny pompoms that have a hue of pink to them in certain light - and yes, i'm happily married, i just like my arts and crafts and know that material - get your minds out of the northern hemisphere boys).
i hate the steelers so now my only hope is any other team that can beat the livin' crap out of them to win. ANY other team. If my green jets don't do it, fine, but I can't stand the steelers and I dont' want them to win so someone please prove themselves on the field and then get out there and rip the steeler's kneecaps off next week.
that is all.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was funny. And, for once, I'm rooting for the Pats. My ideal outcome would be Pack or Bears over the Pats in the SuperBowl.
But I think Wes Welker painted a big fat target on his back with that performance.

Yeah, I hate when defensive players celebrate. There are only two times to celebrate: if you're a big fat lineman who recovers a fumble it's permissible because, let's face it, those guys never get any credit for anything or if you've just done a pick 6. Other than that, get up and walk back to the huddle. It's much more intimidating.

well, for Oregon anyway, yeah, Portland is uber-liberal, Eugene is two shades away from going full-blown communist, the rest of the west side is more or less moderate R, and the east side is more like Idaho or Utah - pretty solid R.
Eugene will always be Marx-worshippers, nothing will change that
The problem is Portland, is that everyone else is intimidated by the in-your-face liberal activism there. Seriously, in 2004, the Multnomah County Republican Party chair didn't put a Bush'04 sign in his front yard because he was afraid for his house getting vandalized. And so there is this go-along-to-get-along attitude, which resembles Stockholm Syndrome most of the time for the regular folks - they don't want the wrath of liberal activists directed at them so they just acquiesce

I'm amazed they don't all use face shields, too. The guys getting poked in the eyes is pretty bad.
But mostly I just think it's a physical game, which is great, but that the guys use their helmets as weapons. If they were soft, Nerf material on the outside, I bet they'd stop doing that.

Strongly disagree. Players are coached to NOT lead with the helmet, because it can lead to serious injuries, not only to the player taking the hit, but this practice is most especially dangerous to the health of the player delivering the hit. As we just saw.

I dunno. I see a lot of spears that look completely avoidable. Whatever the coaches are saying, I think some players disregard that.
Then there are others that don't look avoidable. Soft helmets might help with both.

This is true. We teach the kids starting in the Pit Bull League that tackling when dropping the head (spearing) is the surest way to hurt themselves, and also the surest way to guarantee themselves a spot on my bench. Heads up tackling techniques are hammered into these boys from the time they start until we send them off to high school.

Sure. Players don't always listen to coaches' advice, and occasionally they really do try to hurt somebody deliberately. But there IS a soft attachment that can be stuck outside the helmet like you're suggesting, mostly used only after a player has gotten a concussion. Good logic, right there.

&Nbsp "Let me dispel these ridiculous rumors once and for all and set the record straight: Under my plan, seniors are going to be killed the way they want to be killed, end of story," said the president, who acknowledged that "wiping out" the nation's elderly population has always been his No. 1 priority. And if there does happen to be, during my memorial service, some sort of outbreak of emotion, I'd hope the people there are smart enough that they wouldn't need to be TOLD to respond in a certain way. So no, I'm not buying the explanation that it was "for the deaf." "For the stupid libs," then maybe.

Are you certain that it isn't simply a closed-caption indication of applause?
Posted by: Stillwater at January 16, 2011 06:16 PM (0GpN4)
There is certainly the possibility that the transcriber is a professional and is used to indicating applause.
Another possibility is that they just scrolled TOTUS on the screen and [applause] is written into the speech to indicate where applause lines are likely to go so that the speaker can pause.
Writing applause lines into a memorial speech is bad enough, IMHO.

I'm glad the rally was brought up because I want to post something.
look at how sickening it is on when you read the transcript -- look at what they laugh at and what they applaud

Could be but the person who originally posted the pic is sure pissy about it being removed.
Why does it say 'School [applause]'? If it's closed-caption, shouldn't it say 'Audience [applause]'?

DR. CARLOS GONZALES, PASCUA YAQUI TRIBE: Welcome. Let me start in the traditional way by introducing myself. I am Carlos Gonzalez. On my mother's side, I am Mexican. A child of descendants of this valley, pioneer family from Mexico that came in the 1800s. On my father's side, I'm Yaqui. Refugees from Mexico that escaped the genocide in the Rio Yaqui in the 1800s.We have been here -- for myself, I am fifth generation in the valley of Tucson.
(APPLAUSE)
GONZALES: Now, please understand I am not a medicine man. I'm really just a family doc. Fortunate enough to teach here at this university and fortunate enough to learn the sacred ways and the sacred words so that I can share them with you.I have been given permission by my elders to say blessings of this type although, to tell the truth, I've never done one with so many people.
(LAUGHTER)
GONZALES: So I've also been fortunate to grow up in this great country where a poor kid --
(APPLAUSE)
GONZALES: -- from the south side of Tucson --
(APPLAUSE)
GONZALES: -- could get an education at a fine institution like the University of Arizona, and then even better, to come back and teach here. And teach students at this institution.
So with that, I would like to start the blessing after my brief introduction.
I'm sorry I have to do it the traditional way. It's the way we do it. Now, for those of you that know the traditional blessing way, please feel free to do it. For those of the rest of you, just please stand. So let me begin.
Posted by: GOPSoothsayerproudbootylover at January 16, 2011 02:26 PM (AvO0L)
Much as I'd believe the idiot were somehow prompted to applaud, that jumbotron is simply showing closed captioning.
But, yes, applause at a memorial service is (imo) absolutely disrespectful of the deceased.

Ah....ok.
Posted by: Tami at January 16, 2011 02:26 PM (VuLos)
Let us begin by honoring the eastern door from where we get visions and guidance. May each of us get the vision and guidance to proceed in a good way.
From the southern door, where we get the energies of the family, please let us honor the families of those that have passed on. Let us honor the families of those that are healing. And also let us honor our own families. Let us remain humble. And also use humor when appropriate. For humor is healing and can help people.
From the western door, please let us honor the sacred ways and our sacred ancestors. For without them we would not be here. Oh, Creator, that is a door to which those that have passed on have walked to the next world. Let us honor them as they passed on. Let us also look within ourselves to see how we can improve and be better human beings.
From the northern door, where we receive challenges and the strength to meet those challenges, let us all receive strength to meet the challenges that face our great country. Please, give us that strength as we proceed. From Father Sky, where we get the masculine energy, the energy to be responsible, to be respectful and to protect those that need protection. Give us that good energy. From Mother Earth where we get the feminine energy, give us that energy to nurture and care for those that need it, and also to help those that ask for our help.
Oh, Creator, may the two energies, the masculine energy and the feminine energy, come together in our center where the creator exists, where each of us has a piece of the creator. Please, you have given us each a gift. May we use these gifts to help our fellow human beings.
Oh, Creator, let us bless the families of those that have lost their loved ones. Let us bless the family of those that are healing. Let us bless those people that are here today. Let us bless those that are outside in greater Tucson, in Arizona and in our country. Let us bless them so that they too can heal from this tragedy that has occurred.
Oh, Creator -- if I may, my son is in Afghanistan. A little blessing to him, too.
(APPLAUSE)
GONZALES: Oh, Creator, let us not forget our fellow creatures. Those that stand. Those that blow in the wind. Those that are tall and stately. Those that crawl on the earth. Those that slither on the earth. Those that live under the earth.
Let us remember and bless the winged ones. Those that swim in the waters. The four legged. And also our brothers, the two leggeds that walk throughout this world. When we all come together at this time. And may the words people hear here sink in to their hearts so that they too can heal. So that they too can feel better.
Oh, Creator, I ask this humbly. I ask this so that we all can once again achieve harmony and balance in our lives.
Oh, Creator, welcome -- we welcome those people who come to our beloved city here, our beloved city of Chukson or Tucson as it's known. Welcome here and please bless each and every one here. And with that, I would like to end my blessing to all my relations.
(APPLAUSE)

The Seahawks' 35-24 loss to Chicago in Sunday's divisional playoff was made even more painful by the loss of two starters to concussions.
Tight end John Carlson was upended after a 14-yard catch on Seattle's second drive of the game, landed on his head and had to be carted off the field.
And Marcus Trufant also had to be taken off on a stretcher in the third quarter when he banged his helmet against the knee of Chicago's Kellen Davis.
Both have concussions and will stay overnight in Chicago, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said.

Its recommended for removing sap from cars, so I don't think it should affect the saw metal much. Just in case, wash the acetone off and dry completely when you're done removing the sap.

FYI, "eliminationist rhetoric" is a fairly new phrase. It was used by a scholar to argue his thesis that ordinary Germans were all in on the Nazi enterprise based on things that were written in the popular media.
The person who first used it outside of this context: Paul Krugman.

As a Steelers fan, let me tell you, if we beat the Jets(it won't be easy), I am praying that the Bears beat the Packers.
I think the Bears are an easy win. They've got where they are because they play in the crappy NFC conference and haven't had to play a real team in the playoffs.
That said, i am worried about the Packers. The Steelers are a team that stops running teams. Actually, the Steelers have given up 1 one hundred yard rusher in the past 50 games if i am not mistaken. However the packers aren't a running team, they don't even really try to run. The Steelers secondary is pretty good, but it's mainly a pass rush/run stop defense. So the Steelers match up well against the bears, but not the Packers.

I see it as cockiness. It likely never occurred to them that they wouldn't pull it out. Yes. They have a kick-ass winning record but they also remind me of the Cowboys from the 70s...lots of sparkle; a very high-image team. To appear to be sweating it, or to acknowledge the fact that they were pulling up the rear, might cause them to lose face.
This should be a wake up call as nothing causes you to lose face more than playing a half-ass game and losing when you should have won.

So you want to play the Bears because they were in a weak division but say you want to play the Packers even though they were beaten by the Bears in the same division. That doesn't make a lot of sense.
Especially since Cutler has one of the best arms in the league. With protection Cutler makes amazing throws and now that he's running out of the pocket? Please.
I didn't say division. I said Conference. The NFC blows. It had 1 good team. The Packers, everyone else is just filler.
The Steelers will tear the bears offensive line apart. Also, if I am not mistaken, today is the first time Cutler has ever won a playoff game, now you're so sure he can go all the way. ?

Haha, Climate of Hate in Chicago
Seattle Coach Pete Carroll was very upset at the brutality meted upon his players.
"There has been a climate of hate building here in Chicago against us all week long," he said after the game. "It started with that sports talk radio figure - you all know who I mean - saying that he hoped the Bears would just destroy us. A caller said the Bears should show us no mercy. Another said he wanted the Bears to crush us. Now I've got two men in the hospital. With all the harsh language and vitriol in this city, it's not surprise that things turned out the way they did."
This reporter contacted the White House to get Chicago native President Obama's reaction.
"They brought a knife to the fight," the president responded through a spokesman. "We brought a gun. It's the Chicago way."
Once the game ended, Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas tweeted, "Mission accomplished, Sarah Palin."
