— Dave in Texas What are these, exactly? Because it sounds as if the government has given a huge break to this industry specifically, doesn't it? But nobody says what they are.
(I'm ignoring, for the moment, the stupidity of increasing the price of any commodity because we all know that price is passed on to the consumer.)
Every time prices increase (and often as a result of their friggin stupid policies such as shutting down drilling in the gulf, nixing pipelines and the GODDAMN MOSQUITO AND MOOSE RESERVE ANWR), we hear Democrats bang this "no more subsidies for big oil" drum like monkeys on crack.
Well what's a "big oil tax subsidy?" I know of one. Section 199. IRS Code Section 199
SEC. 199. INCOME ATTRIBUTABLE TO DOMESTIC PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES.(1) IN GENERAL- There shall be allowed as a deduction an amount equal to 9 percent of the lesser of--
(A) the qualified production activities income of the taxpayer for the taxable year, or
(B) taxable income (determined without regard to this section) for the taxable year.
This deduction was passed in 2004 as part of the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, and is applicable to all domestic manufacturers.
Not just ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco.
All. Domestic. Manufacturers. Companies that make soft drinks. Light bulbs. Bedding. Cigarettes. Booze. Condoms (see what I did there?)
Tupperware, Ford, Phillip Morris, Coca Cola and Louisville Slugger. Even Proctor and Gamble. Any company that makes something, here in the US qualifies for a deduction under Section 199. Even ethanol producers.
Except oil companies only get a 6% deduction.
Now, look, it's more complicated than I just described, there are limitations to the deduction that are related to W-2 wages for work performed specifically on the productive effort, the point is, a) it isn't just an oil company tax break and b) other manufacturers who are not filthy oil barons get more of it that the oil companies do.
So here's a suggestion. If you happen to be at a Town Hall, or some event where your duly elected representative to the United States Congress utters these words, walk up to the microphone, be polite, and ask that jackass "could you please explain just ONE of these tax subsidies for oil companies? Just one, that specifically favors them and no other industry"?
Have fun with it. Be playful. People like "playful."

Obama's position is doubly absurd.
Not only does he push the subsidy canard, he claims it is part of the current high cost of gasoline.

I think so. You're saying that the subsidies aren't just for Big Oil (ExxonMobil, Chevron) but also for Big Rubber (Goodyear, Church & Dwight).

Obama keeps getting away with calling a tax incentive a subsidy.
A subsidy is:
i. aid given by the government
ii. a sum paid by the government
iii. a grant or a contribution...by the government
Obama isn't giving ANYTHING to oil companies (except the oil companies in Brazil).
Posted by: Soothsayer at April 30, 2011 10:35 AM (uFokq)
So how come all the screech bag lefties talk about oil company profits but no mention of total revenue or rate of return on oil stocks.
Of course nobody wants to talk about 94% of the world oil reseves controlled by national oil companies.
My plan will nationalize all national oil companies.

Has anyone else heard that it's impossible to lie if you're asking a question?
Example: "It's time we ended subsidies for Big Oil companies!" is declarative. It states an opinion based on factual premises which may or may not be true. In contrast, "Don't you think it's time we ended subsidies for Big Oil companies?" poses a question. It's also based on premises, but the main part of the sentence asks instead of tells. Specifically, it asks something time-related.
Another example: "If the Republicans had their way and got laws passed that would abolish all taxes for Big Oil companies while exempting them from every environmental protection law and regulation which would have enabled them to put lethal poisons into your food and drinking water, what time is it?"

Look. This is nothing new and it will go on as long as there's leftists, especially leftists in power in this country. No amount of reasoning is going to change their minds. Leftists hate private property and anyone who happens to make a profit from that property, period.
So what we need to do is ignore them, or better yet, laugh at them while we continue to vote these destroyers of our country out of office. That includes RINO's willing to go along to get along too.
I'm getting old and tired. Many days I feel we should either have a major geographical split in this country or just have the civil battle that we all know is coming eventually. Afterwards we can lump all the libtards together and let them stew in their own pudding or ship all of them to Canada.

Government subsidies are only good for highly inefficient sources of energy that require subsidies for viability.
Plus, this means that we all have to use less (be poor together) and have a government bureaucracy to control and micromanage energy use.

The oil industry's most powerful trade group is rebutting claims that the industry receives lavish public support.
"This is a tired old argument we've been hearing for two years now," said American Petroleum Institute chief economist John Felmy.
"If the president were serious about job creation, he would be working with us to develop American oil and gas by American workers for American consumers. The federal government by no stretch of the imagination subsidizes the oil industry. The oil industry subsidizes the federal government at a rate of $95 million a day."

Yeah, it seems like they're never the least bit specific about what these tax breaks are. Then they'll throw out a number, in the few billions. As though a few billion dollars means anything to either the oil companies or the govt. And they'll do that at the same time the numbers come out that an oil company has made 10 times the number (which is annualized, and for the entire industry) in a single quarter.
I always figured that it was tax breaks to get oil companies to do stupid stuff they wouldn't otherwise do, but now it sounds like it doesn't even amount to that.
Posted by: Optimizer at April 30, 2011 11:25 AM (F56VB)
What are these, exactly? Because it sounds as if the government has given a huge break to this industry specifically, doesn't it? But nobody says what they are.
Forget it. It's like Wall Street being in bed with the GOP. That must be on a spiritual plane only, because anyone who looks at campaign contributions on OpenSecrets.org realizes that Wall Street is bunking with the Dems.
Similarly with Big Business supporting the GOP. Only small family proprietorships like GE support the Dems, or are mobbed up with them.

Oil Company Tax Breaks?
Both leading Democratic candidates have referred to tax breaks to oil companies:
Clinton, July 23, 2007: First of all, I have proposed a strategic energy fund that I would fund by taking away the tax break for the oil companies, which have gotten much greater under Bush and Cheney.
Obama, June 22, 2007: In the face of furious lobbying, Congress brushed aside incentives for the production of more renewable fuels in favor of more tax breaks for the oil and gas companies.
Both candidates are referring to H.R. 6, the 2005 energy bill that contained $14.3 billion in subsidies for energy companies. However, as weÂ’ve reported numerous times, a vast majority of those subsidies (all but $2.8 billion) were for nuclear power, energy-efficient cars and buildings, and renewable fuels research. In addition, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, the tax changes in the 2005 energy bill produced a net tax increase for the oil and gas companies, as weÂ’ve reported time and time and time again. They did get some breaks, but they had more taken away.

Reminds me of Obama's energy speech.
Made fun of "Drill, Baby, Drill". Lamented about how every president gets up there and says we need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and then do nothing.
He even admitted that we will actually need the oil for decades to come (I was kind of surprised). He declared that our best resource was in our own backyard. One would think that would mean energy resources in this context, but instead explained that it was "innovation" (which is a kind of capitalistic notion, but in this case probably just means "unicorn poop"). Then he admitted that it would take a decade for alternatives to be developed.
So, having admitted that we'll need the oil, and that there will not be some miraculous substitute any time soon, and having said "Drill, Baby, Drill" was not the answer, he claimed that we will drop our dependence of foreign oil by 1/3 anyway.
I couldn't help but think "25th Amendment". But, then again, maybe he was predicting a massive increase in the price of oil, meaning we would import less because we simply could not afford it.

And something I didn't know. 51% of our oil is imported, more than I thought. But half of that is from the western hemisphere (methinks Canada).
