— Slublog Paul LePage, Maine's new governor is not known for his tact. He was asked to attend an event to celebrate the MLK holiday next Monday. LePage declined the invitation, citing other plans, and the NAACP complained. When asked about their complaints, LePage answered in what is coming to be known as his trademark style.
Speaking to reporters Friday morning, LePage was asked to respond to suggestions from NAACP members and others that his decision not to attend ceremonies honoring Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. were part of a negative pattern.I voted for LePage, and acknowledge that he could have been more diplomatic in his language. The NAACP's reaction, however, is outrageous. Unless they have direct evidence that LePage has any intention to exclude minorities from the state, they should refrain from such rhetoric.“Tell them to kiss my butt,” LePage said with a large smile, according to video by WCSH6. He then added: “If they want play the race card, come to dinner and my son will talk to them,” a reference to his adopted son, Devon Raymond, who is black.
Dan Demeritt, LePageÂ’s spokesman, had said the Republican governor was unable to attend an NAACP dinner honoring King in Portland on Sunday because of personal commitments and an NAACP breakfast in Orono on Monday because he plans to attend the funeral for a former state trooper.
But leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People pointed out in a news reports published Friday that LePage had declined numerous invitations from the organization.
Rachel Talbot Ross, state director of the NAACP, told the Portland Press Herald she was concerned “we’re not welcome and we’re not part of the Maine” LePage is preparing to lead.
The reaction of the Maine NAACP is mild compared to the national organization's statement.
"Governor Le Page's decision to inflame racial tension on the eve of the King holiday denigrates his office. His words are a reminder of the worst aspects of Maine's history and out of touch with our nation's deep yearning for increased civility and racial healing."So you're on notice, wingnuts. "Kiss my butt" is now officially racist language. Unfortunately, the NAACP is correct that Maine's history on such matters has not always been the best. The KKK was once quite active in the state, and mainly targeted the French Catholic community. Which makes the NAACP's statement unfortunate, since LePage is French Catholic. So they're accusing him of displaying the same sort of discrimination that was once aimed at his ancestors. Great job, guys.
Lost amidst the outrageous outrage at LePage's statement is the fact that the NAACP has made far worse statements about their opponents in the recent past. Saying conservative groups "have given platform to anti-Semites, racists and bigots," seems a wee bit more outrageous than LePage's inelegant words in this instance. This doesn't make LePage's words any better, but given their history of making outrageous statements, one would think the NAACP would be a bit more nuanced in what they find unacceptable.
Update - In the comments here and at Hot Air, where this story is linked, my tepid criticism of LePage has been noted. I voted for LePage in the primary. I donated to his campaign in the general election and enthusiastically voted for him. During the campaign, I had the honor of sitting across the table from him during a candidate meet and greet. I have nothing but admiration for my governor.
Still, this is the state of Snowe and Collins. In other words, RINO Heaven. Maine may have elected a GOP legislature, but is still the land of liberals and liberal Republicans. I'm glad LePage called out the NAACP, but I hope he doesn't give the left (including the GOP left) too much ammunition against him. The left hates him, the establishment GOP is suspicious of him, and the media's salivating at any chance to take him down. He's a good guy with good intentions for this state. I hope he succeeds.

Well, inflamed racial tensions among all four blacks in Maine will no doubt set the state on edge.
NAACP: your race card has been declined.

Why should he be diplomatic? Why should everyone in public office be expected to put their lives on hold to show up at NAACP events? Are they, well, better than the rest of us?
Even if this event is to be in praise of Dr King, I wouldn't put it past the radicals involved to try to stick the needle in a racist Repthuglkkkan governor, even if he did show up. It wouldn't be the first time.
All race-hustlers, be they from NAACP, the "Rainbow Coalition" or any other group that describes themselves as victims in order to get unearned preferential treatment, can kiss my ass, too.

In the minds of the left, the organizations that make up their rainbow of diversity are inseparable from the people they 'represent'.
Don't like the politics or tactics of the NAACP? You are a racist.
Disagree with the Human Rights Campaign? You are a homophobe
The left does a tremendous amount of work to create these false connections in order to control and define minority groups in a way that serves their electoral and social purposes.

I'm all for making them not being welcome. They're just like PETA or Planned Parenthood or NOW or GLAAD. They are a liberal organization that wants to push a liberal agenda. I'm sure there are instances of the NAACP not endorsing a black candidate or even endorsing their opponent if they are white. So obviously race is not really their true motivating factor.

Slublog: "This doesn't make LePage's words any better"
Oh whatever. When someone throws down the race card and it's a bullshit call, throwing the bullshit flag and throwing it loudly is the right thing to do.
Doing this meally mouthed "I apologize if any one was offended, but I meant no offence" is half the reason this crap has gone on for years.
I mean it. Unfairly throwing the race card is as bad as calling someone a sp*c or k*ke or n*gger. Seriously. Just get tarred with the race card once and watch your future crumble. Heck, if I got called "k*ke" or "n*gger", I'd be pissed and offended, but do you think my future options would dry up? Would my boss fire me? No. Would future bosses refuse to hire me? Would my neighbors and co-religionists start to shun me? No.
But get accused of using racist language or racist activity and just wait for the HR department to destroy you.
Does this mean I'm advocating that we should go arround using racial profanity? Hell no. But this goes both ways.
If LePage had said "Kiss my butt, boy..." Or said crap like "MLK stands for Martin Lucifer Coon and that's why I'm not going", I'd say to hell with LePage.
But he didn't. They played the race card, he called BS on it, and most importantly, mocked them for it and let them know he wasn't afraid.
Do you know when the whole Obama "The cops acted stupidly" thing started to really unravel for the left? When the cop, when asked "why don't you just appologize and we can move on?", he said flat out "there will be no apology."
He refused to play the game.
.
.
Damn it, where's the Tylenol?
.
.
.
Look, I just ranted here a bit. But I don't want to end on a negative note. The fact that this guy has adopted a black child is pretty damn beautiful of him. And black parents have done the same thing too. That's pretty damn beautiful.

Let's play with some numbers.
As of 2009, the Census estimates that about 1.3 million people live in Maine. About 1.2% of the population is Black. That would mean that there are about 15000 Black persons living in Maine.
Around 20% of the persons in Maine are under the age of 18. Let's assume that this rate is similar for all racial groups. That would mean that there are around 12,000 Black adults of voting age in Maine.
Voter turnout in the last election in Maine was around 54%. Let's be generous and round it to 55% and be even more generous and assume that represents Black, White, Hispanic voting rates. This would mean that 6600 Black adults voted in Maine in the midterm election.
Nationally, 91% of Black voters voted for Democratic candidates in the Midterm elections. Let's use 90% and just assume that Maine is no different from the nation.
No more than 700 Black voters cast a ballot for the current Maine Governor in the last election. No more than 6,000 cast a ballot against him. The actions of the Maine NAACP should be irrevalent for this reason alone, but for the Washington Post, there is always a need to insert the 'Dominant Media Racial Political Narrative' in every story.

If we're going to accept that as a justification for some kind of collective guilt, let me add my own: I used to live in Los Angeles. Twice during my years there, riots led to enormous property damages and death. In both cases, the riots were instigated by black people, and virtually all the damage, injury and death that resulted was caused by black people.
If we follow Slublog's logic, I have a right to expect all black people to apologize to me and pander to me because "their people" were responsible for these awful events.
Many of us have spent years listening to the NAACP and others blaming us because white people enslaved black people 150 years ago. My ancestors didn't do that, and many of the blacks' ancestors weren't slaves.
So, as far as collective guilt goes, I say "fuckit." I'm not playing that game.

The truly ironic (rather than hipster douche meaning of that word) is that as a French Roman Catholic, LePage probably has more knowledge of hate speech (thanks to the KKK targeting RCs, Jews, and a whole score of other folks besides Blacks) than many young Blacks.
He's older than I am, and I can remember the good ol' boys pestering the shit out of us (RC, Italian and Injun, so the least most white of the lot...lived next door to some Polish/Converso RCs and some Irish/German RCs, the veritable Catholic "ghetto" of our little podunk town...very convenient for a bunch of drunk assholes who had no other "minorities" to pick on at 1 a.m. on a Saturday morning). If he had to deal with even a smidgen of what I remember as a kid, then yes, he knows what "hate speech" really looks like.
Slightly O/T: but as per story in the sidebar -- has anyone determined whether or not those sharks invading the main streets of Oz are Zionist or not...seems to be a regular occurance nowdays. Bet they've recruited the crocs too, sneaky devils.//

It's no coincidence that the urban poor are the urban poor:
When I was 5 years old we lived in Fairfax Va, really Springfield. From there you could see the smoke rising into the sky over Washington during the riots. According to Wikipedia (not the best source but nonetheless):
By the time the city was considered pacified on Sunday, April 8, twelve had been killed (mostly in burning homes), 1,097 injured, and over 6,100 arrested. Additionally, some 1,200 buildings had been burned, including over 900 stores. Damages reached $27 million. This can be estimated to be equivalent to over $156 million today. The riots utterly devastated Washington's inner city economy. With the destruction or closing of businesses, thousands of jobs were lost, and insurance rates soared. Made uneasy by the violence, city residents of all races accelerated their departure for suburban areas, depressing property values. Crime in the burned out neighborhoods rose sharply, further discouraging investment. On some blocks, only rubble remained for decades. Columbia Heights and the U Street corridor did not begin to recover economically until the opening of the metro stations in 1991 and 1999, respectively, while the H street NE corridor remained depressed for several years longer.
Walter Washington, who reportedly refused FBI director Hoover's suggestion to shoot the rioters, went on to become the city's first elected mayor and its first black mayor.

Nope, here we have waiters, lawyers, coaches, store managers, judges, prominent businessmen, hell even boyfriends!
You don't mind yourself in this town? One or four of them might even become family members! (Mexicans do that you know. Marry people, I mean.)
You have no idea how hard it is to live up to the label of "mecca of racism and bigotry" when most people you meet are kinda decent and 1 in 7 is Mexican or Mexicanish.
Still, I wouldn't want to coast on an unearned reputation.
I feel strongly that I should make it a point to be more of a douchebag to people in my town on a day to day basis.
My friends and neighbors and co-workers will surely understand. It's a matter of civic pride!
It's going to take an effort though, for me to follow through on this...
I just hope that my fellow Tucsonans will respond in kind to my douchebaggery when it manifests.
Because, what's the point of racism and bigotry if it doesn't result in animosity?
But they won't.
I know it already!
Wanna know why they won't?
Because they are lazy!
There!
I said it!
This is the truth about the denizens of Pima County that Sherrif Dupnik doesn't want you to know!
All we can do here in Tucson, AZ is foment bigotry and hatred just by sitting on our asses and fucking existing!
Do we do anything about it?
Pretty much never.
If my fellow Tucsonans had an ounce of civic pride, we would be rioting in the streets 3 days a week and conducting lynchings 2 others (during normal business hours)!
Nope. We just treat every day like it's a damn weekend.
Lazy.
That's what it is.
I blame the Mexicans!

Actually, I'm proud of the guy. He took a step in entirely the right direction, but it is only a step and all other Republicans should follow his lead. Sane people need to stop playing along with the bullshit.
The NAACP is almost completely comprised of people who believe that a particualr skin color should dictate that one cannot be a Republican -- and simultaneously screams that anyone that might disagree is a racist. It is wholly fitting and proper to refuse to play along with bullshit of such inferior quality anymore.
It is also ridiculous to play along with Mathews/Olbermann, etc. who get a big paycheck from GE to go on TV and bellow about how they are anti-corporate and "all for the little guy." Ditto for all those taking big paychecks from Disney, TimeWarner, Viamcomm, etc. We need to systematically strip them of the cover of their bullshit.
Immediately it will be fun to watch their surprise and frustration as their favorite weapons no longer have any effect. On a longer term basis, there is at least a glimmer of hope that they will have to improve the quality and deliver of their bullshit so at least it will be a little more entertaining when they trot it out.

These organizations (NAACP, La Raza, HRC) don't care about actual problems that may impact their members. They care about using their standing and bully pulpits to present themselves as the only authentic representations of their 'community'. The prize? Six figure jobs and the social standing and respect that comes with the position.
Their job is to keep the liberal narrative on a particular issue alive and keep donations rolling in to keep their nonsense jobs.

I remember once when Jessie Jackson once paid a visit to Mr. T.J. Rogers, CEO of Cypress Semiconductor, in order to shake them down for not hiring enough blacks. Rogers showed him that they simply didn't have the applicants and he would be damned if he was going to give money to Jackson's project to avoid pickets and protests. Called Jackson a pigeon that comes in, craps all over the place, and then leaves.
I thought it was hilarious.

Senator Libby Mitchell is in the hot seat after a questionable photo surfaced. At a recent debate, Republican Paul LePage called her out for disrespecting former President George Bush. The Maine Republican Party released the picture to News 13. It shows Senator Mitchell posing for a photo holding a proclamation signed by former President George Bush. The document has a sticker on it, with the president's image, labeled "international terrorist." The context of all of this is key. It comes after a comment Senator Mitchell made during the debate in Bangor. She said a governor must show respect for our president, referring to video where Mayor LePage told a group of fishermen that he'll be a governor who tells President Obama to, "Go to hell

Boy, the Ven diagram between Adolf, Yasser, and Barry gets closer to total convergence every day. But at least the conservosphere loved the speech because, um, it had pretty words and was devoid of any references to "honkeys". Whoop whoop whoop! as the "mourners" at this somber pay-per-view spectacle would say.

how about this as a truthful tactic from our side.
listen constituents and such, the dems have said they were there to help you but what has it brought? despair to too many families, they won't allow you the honor of aknowledging you are powerful , you are an american. You can indeed become an independant individual , one that isn't used for gain, but you use yourself and your strength for your persoanl achievment. They demand you to aknowledge you are a group of unloved from women to minorites, to children . not an individual already given rights,
that you cannot succeed without them, we know you can because most of us came from nothing to something, without them telling us we are allowed , you work you strive and everyone has a chance . if we don't all work and strive each of us becomes under the thumb of another.

OR he's some super genius who discovered time travel or something. I bet when he was a teenager he built an ACME time travel kit and transported himself to 2011 - saw he would be Governor of Maine and invited to NAACP event same day as funeral of a ME State Trooper and figured he'd better adopt a poor Jamaican child to fend off all the hate.

But, unlike this obviously racist governor who is clearly overcompensating for his racism by taking on the incomparable financial and emotional responsibility of raising someone else's child (the whole thing just smacks of effort), I do consistently advocate that the state use its police powers to steal from you asshole wingers and dump it in my credit fixer bank account so that I don't ever have to get out of bed as early as you racist racists.

Hmmm - because rap music is so tranquil I guess.
What gets me about all this bullshit regarding "heated political rhetoric" is that that if enough people in this country were really listening to all the "heated political rhetoric" why haven't more of the insane among us committed mass murder? These mass shootings would be happening on a daily basis all over the country, wouldn't they?
Why is it only "political" speech and particularly that of conservatives what drives insane people to violence?
Again what about video games, advertising, tv, movies, music - somehow the it is only violent imagery, metaphors, symbolism in political speech that is dangerous?

The first iteration I found so repellent that I didn't bother to get seated, once handed the greasy laminated menu when I checked in, as a curious neighbor, willing to spend $30 on a lunch for a new neighborhood restaurant.
(How the fuck can you possibly have greasy dog-eared menus, your first week in business, offering "fresh" Italan cuisine?)
Also, don't, just don't offer shitty cellphone pics of your cuisine, especially if all your dishes look like dog vomit in the menu.
I dunno, perhaps they were exceptionally tasty. I didn't try them. I would never have tried them based on the evidence proffered by the menu!
So, apparently after about 5 changes of ownership, they got reviewed again by our local lib weekly rag.
"Their Pizza is too Cheesy".
Huh?
Too cheesy?
That's almost like saying too bacony!
WTF is wrong with you?
I'll bet that you would even eat Poppa John's Pizza with their slathering on of their too sweet, disgusting and yet weirdly metallic tasting, "tomato sauce"!
So, long story short....
I'm expecting a Pizza and Salad Delivery from a joint that is less than one mile from me, in about 15 min.
"If it's a really tall Asian guy, that means that he is the owner!"
Seriously?
A tall Asian guy, sneaking up to my apartment door to deliver me a delicious Pizza and a Salad?

" Which makes the NAACP's statement unfortunate, since LePage is French Catholic. So they're accusing him of displaying the same sort of discrimination that was once aimed at his ancestors. Great job, guys."

Maybe back in the 1960s the NAACP was a force for good, but now they're just a bunch of witless, loudmouth bigots.
I lived in Texas when James Byrd was murdered, a black man drug behind a truck by three white racists. Two were sentenced to death and the third to life, a fair sentence. A death sentence in Texas is no joke, either.
The NAACP ran ads in Texas after the fact saying that justice was not done because of racism, that Texas would not be right until it passed a hate crimes law. Well, you can't take a more serious stand against murder than execution and you can't execute murderers twice.
From that point forward, the NAACP lost all credibility with me.

For some reason the glare from a black woman negates, terminates, overrides, destroys, obliterates, and for lack of more terms on thesaurus.com ends any argument.
LePage should just send one to their headquarters and their statement will be retracted faster than Al Gore releasing.

We're scary. I scare myself.

Describe, if you will, what you are doing that we should be emulating.

Just be glad he's the governor or Maine instead of me. At least he said "butt".

Having said that...
Bigotry is alive and well in New England, including Maine, so much so that I don't think I could live there. I remember when I first attended college in Vermont (having grown up in MD) thinking: where are all the black people? There simply aren't any. That, in and of itself, is not a sign of bigotry. People make choices on where to live and that's just that. However, because of the lack of blacks - and the presence in the old mill towns of low-income Puerto Ricans, which really were the only non-whites in New England when I was a kid growing up (and visiting relatives there several times a year) - there is a complete lack of sensitivity or situational awareness on racial issues. People make really inappropriate comments, have bizarre choices of lawn art and "folk art," and just generally have no clue about blacks and Latinos. I found it really grating.
A few years ago my husband was interviewing for a job in Portland Maine and the crap he heard the Mainiacs saying while on the flight up, particularly on the ground in Philly waiting for the plane to take off, was so offensive that he basically decided then and there we wouldn't move there.
That's why I never buy the "South is racist" thingy. It's much worse in the north(east), imho.
I denounce myself for pointing out that some people are so socially clueless that they should probably be institutionalized.
