Texas House Passes Voter ID
— Dave in Texas

Texas House passes voter id bill, following the Senate's lead in January. I think Governor "Adios, Mo-Fo" will sign it.

There's only one reason it's controversial, and one reason only. Unidentified voters (and non-residents, and even dead people) vote for Democrats.

That is really the only. Damned. Reason. It is controversial. Not "disenfranchisement". Not the cost. None of that crap.

There's only one reason.

Incidentally, this issue (well, it was the major one), the Texas Tea-Partiers were really pissed off about it with Speaker of the House Joe Straus from the last legislative session. They campaigned mightily (but unsuccessfully) to have him tossed out of that job, claiming he sabotaged the last attempt.

This one is no longer an issue.

3 Actually, the fight isn't over yet. Texas is still subject to US oversight thanks to the Civil Rights Act of 1963, which was renewed for another 25 years during the W presidency.

18 The House in Ohio just passed something similar.

It's dumb. And of course I mean that only in the sense it means we the taxpayer will foot the bill for those that cannot afford an id card. Indiana has shelled out over $10 million taxpayers dollars for their "free id" card since 2007.

Nevertheless, the "poll tax" allegations are already being thrown down.

Right, because when I think of a "poll tax" the first thing I think about is the State giving a FREE id card to a potential voter.

The rightness of this is so far beyond argument that I can't imagine how the bill's opponents look at themselves in the mirror.  I feel like that paralyzed guy in Clockwork Orange, listening in ecstasy to the screams of my one-time attacker, now my victim.  Is that weird?  Probably, but I don't care anymore.

23 So let me get this straight... There are TWO reasons this bill is controversial? What were they, again?

Posted by: CoolCzech at March 24, 2011 05:53 PM (kUaEF)

24 AUSTIN — After more than 11 hours of debate, the Texas House voted 101-48 late Wednesday for a bill requiring voters to show photo ID at the polls, increasing the likelihood that the measure will take effect in time for the 2012 elections.

It is about farking time.  We have to show ID for almost everything we do, even purchasing certain OTC meds, why not have to validate who you are and if you are a US citizen before you vote?

The next Republican President (and even the current Republican house, despite their limited powers) have got to do something about rampant voter fraud, else this Republic is toast.  It might already be too late.

28 6 Texas is still subject to US oversight thanks to the Civil Rights Act of 1963 1965 No shit? Can we get Massachusetts on that list? I only wish. States which have their voting laws under oversight are: Alabama Alaska Arizona Georgia Louisiana South Carolina Texas Virginia (some counties exempt) There are some counties, cities, and townships also subject to oversight, ranging from some California counties in and around the Central Valley to the Bronx, Kings County (Brookyln) and New York County (Manhattan) in New York state. While Louisiana has a voter ID law in place, Georgia's law got thrown out on appeal IIRC. If the Dems see this as dangerous to their vote-stealing operations, they'll see if they can venue-shop for a judge to kill this new law.

29

Rep. Jose Aliseda, R-Beeville, was a strong proponent of the bill all day. He repeatedly noted that Mexico requires voters to present a government ID that features biometric data.

Even the Mexicans have better safeguards against voter fraud that we do.

If we can do the gov't ID, at least we should take a page from the Iraqis and have the purple-finger ink to show who already voted.

34 If we can do the gov't ID, at least we should take a page from the Iraqis and have the purple-finger ink to show who already voted. If that ever gets brought over here, I bet the Dem dirty tricks squad will go the opposite direction of their current over-voting fraud and find a way to ink the fingers of people they don't want to vote in order to disenfranchise them.

40 The Democrat/MSM argument against ID is that there have been zero convictions of voter fraud due to fake identity.  EXACTLY...because we haven't been verifying the voter's identity.  But now the ACORN crowd risks getting caught, so there will be less undetected fraud.

42 What are the odds Eric Holder's Justice Department clears this thing prior to 2012?

Brandon in Baton Rouge above mentioned it cause of the Civil Rights Act, but I think it's because of the Voting Rights Act.  Texas and something like 10 other states can't so much as moving a polling booth down the hall of a building without friggin' DOJ clearance.

But if everything I hear about Holder's Voting Rights Division is true this bill could have passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and the race baiters there will still tell us to go get fucked.  It's gonna take a Republican administration to get this thing going.

50 We really need to ditch Strauss!

Posted by: Texan Economist at March 24, 2011 06:41 PM (TC/9F)

51 Voter fraud in South Texas is a huuuuuuuuuge issue.  This is where the major push for and against this bill is coming from.  This is a big, big, big problem in the Democratic primary election - not a problem at all with Republicans until it gets to the general election.

You should read up on the fights that broke out in Houston in the 2010 Democrat primary election....oh, and the building that warehouses all the voting machines mysteriously caught fire 5 weeks before the general election.  Stuffing the ballot box is a Texas tradition that dates back to the 30's during LBJ's time.  He made stuffing ballot boxes an art form.  When Democrats in South Texas see ACORN registering Mickey Mouse to vote...they look at them and think - AMATEURS!

Like I said, this is mainly a problem with Democrats during the primary.  In 2008, people were arrested for fighting during the Democrat primary of Obama v Clinton.  Obama supporters wouldn't let Clinton supporters in to the caucus meetings, they handed out ballots that already had a vote on them, etc.  Clinton won the primary by a large margin and Obama miraculously won the caucus.  And because of the screwy way the Dems elect their nominee, that primary was what gave Obama the win for the nomination.  He cheated something terrible.  Texas Democrats are Clinton Democrats, not Obama Democrats...of course if Perry keeps recruiting all those business owners from California to Texas, that is sure to change.

55 Idaho passed it last year.
I had to show ID to vote in the Primary and the General.

I loved it.

Now if we can just get the Closed Primary happening, it would be perfect.

The Idaho Supreme court has declared the Open Primary unconstitutional but the established RINOs are fighting it... "We don't want to offend the Independents".
The Democrats have a Caucus so their candidate is hand picked.
They don't even vote in the Primary, unless it's to vote for the Weakest Republican that they want to face in the General.

*facepalm

56 its the mail in voting that is the problem here not physically going to a voting booth and voting imho. A person can only vote so many times per day, so fraud is very limited if you have to physically go to a booth. Does this bill address security for the mail in voting?

59 Well, Dave .. there's another reason. I am an unabashed conservative from Wyoming that thought Reagan was a liberal. But I will tell you this. The legislation as written is flawed and has a couple dump-truck sized provisions for letting people do what you would not want them to do. So: Read the bill before you take the purpose from face value by the title. There are plenty of reasons for conservatives to push back on *this* bill. (That said, if they were trying to pass a bill about what they called it; I would be on your side on this).
