3 It's so great to live in a country where service and sacrifice for others is so deeply respected.

4 Wonder why that never happened when I was flying around in uniform in the early 70s.

11 Thank You All.

And Thanks to your families and friends who put up with all the stuff that goes into being a vet family.

Thank You for making it possible to live like an American.

12 Yeah, Vic. Your generation got shit on by the Worst Generation.  I honor your sacrifice.  Thanks.

13 7 But I actually had more problems with the hari krishnas.

I never thought about it before but unintended positive consequence of  the increase security at airports ... no more hari krishnas trying to sell you flowers, good karma  and other crap.

14 May i make this official? as a spouse i dont want any picture of flag draped coffins shown to me EVER. they dont make me feel patriotic... each and every one represents a friend of God Forbid the most important person in my life...

Sometimes I get stuff from friend who send me emails or clips while my guy is deployed. I know you think its thoughtful, but it just makes me have panic attacks and think about things i prefer never to have to think about.

anyway i am about over the whole memorial day thing. Sooo depressing. makes me miss my grandfathers bitterly.

Posted by: Gushka at May 30, 2011 12:21 PM (93zw2)

Perhaps the best Memorial Day celebrating was the raucous celebration of the death of the most foolish of terrorists, Osama.

With that display of triumphant nationalism, all of Osama's beliefs in the inherent weakness of the American stomach should have been whisked away like so much dust.

That not only honors the service of the dead but may in fact mean fewer deaths in the future.

16 Served from '67 to '69 and never witnessed that treatment either. Was told, instead, DON'T wear your uniform when flying commercial. One reason why there are some people I still don't talk to, even after all these years.

Wouldn't the Worst Generation just be a subpopulation within the Baby Boomers?  My in-laws are both BBs and are stand-up folks (but they don't get my Gen X ways).

Thanks for your service Vic.  I always try to fly in uniform--it's usually gets me fast tracked thru security.  The problem is that if Julie Haggerty ever got on the intercom asking if anyone could fly a plane, they'd be looking at the guy in the Air Force uniform...and would be quickly disappointed.

Because something in your eyes told them that you would be a cranky old fart fixated on a 200-year-old document.

But....Thank You.

19 Was told, instead, DON'T wear your uniform when flying commercial.

You had to fly in uniform to get the military discount ticket price. Did you wave that?

Back in those days a coast to coast ticket was pretty high.

20 Because something in your eyes told them that you would be a cranky old fart fixated on a 200-year-old document.

LOL, we did have to take an oath for that.

And again, thanks all.

21 Lovely commercial! AB knows how the 'understated' is always more powerful.

I was in the St. Louis airport years ago when Desert Storm troops were arriving home. The entire terminal burst into spontaneous and thunderous  applause.  Oh, I suppose some libtards didn't participate because they don't appreciate the U.S military, but they were certainly in the minority.

BTW - The thrill was even greater because I remember my 'homecoming' from RVN many years prior, and I'm so happy (and proud) to see the military has regained its position as THE most respected institution in our country.

I thought that was a throwaway comment until I started to think about it.

Congress? Hah!

The presidency? No, I don't think so.

The judiciary? Nope.

Any of the hundreds of government institutions such as Agriculture, Labor, Education, HUD, etc.? Not a chance.

I think that you are correct!

23 I joined the Army in 2007 and came off active duty recently, though I plan to go on in the Reserve for a good many years.

I've known nothing but thanks and goodwill from the civilians I encountered while I was in uniform.  Barb, #3: I agree.  And it's not because I want thanks myself (in truth I'm a bit embarrassed by it), but because I know so many people who deserve it much more than I do.

Vic, alwyr, thatcrazynjguy, and others: Thank you for serving in a time when it was really thankless.

Gushka: Good luck to your guy, and to you.  Deploying was the worst thing I put my wife through.  I came home on leave to see a black card on the fridge, with white letters: "When you're going through hell, keep going." (Winston Churchill.)

Vic, I too am so glad to see the 'new crop' getting proper thank-yous from the folks. It's really nice to see. Then there's the stories of guys in first class giving up their seats to GI's on the way home. It's all so as it was meant to be.

#17 Wouldn't the Worst Generation just be a subpopulation within the Baby Boomers? - Big Fat Meanie

You bet. It was the chicken$hit submorons. There were terrified they might get hurt when the truth was that except for the frontline troops the odds of a combat death were pretty low. I suppose the other issue was that the spoiled asshats would have to behave like adults and that REALLY upset them.

30 Does anyone remember the AB commercial after 9/11 where the AB horses were all saddled up and trudging along the countryside to wind up in New York on a frozen landscape across the river from the Towers and each horse takes a knee and bows down their head.  They only played it once.  Beautiful stuff.  Can't watch it without crying.  Of course it's saved to my video file.

31 Before I go to bed.  My friends on Yukla 27.  I lost a lot of friends that cold September day.  I fly a flag every Sep 22 for you guys.  As long as I breathe, you'll be remembered.  Unsung heroes.  http://tinyurl.com/3hd8zb8
