— Ace A CBS anchor in Los Angeles is terming the death of Osama bin Ladin a "murder," steve_in_hb tells me:
Local CBS2 news anchor just made the following statement while pimping their 8:00 KCAL9 coverage of OBL: "new reaction on the murder of the terrorist mastermind." Murder? Apparently, the killing during legal combat operations of a person who 1) declared war on the US and 2) masterminded a series of attacks, generally targeting civilians, is murder.
A charitable person would assume that, while it was a horrible misuse of the language, it was probably merely a slip of the tongue. However, when I went to their website to write a complaint I found that someone else had already complained about one of their stories describing his death as murder. That complaint (post and link here) was posted 20 hours before the occurence I witnessed. While it appears the earlier complaint refers to a guest describing OBL's death as murder, the occurrence that angered me was a direct statement by Sharon Tay who is described on their website as an anchor.
I asked, to make sure of the context: Did she tease an upcoming interview by asking "Was it murder?" That would also be awful, but at least it would be a question.
No, he informs me. Sharon Tay called it a "murder" in a simple statement.
They cut to her briefly during the CBS2 coverage to pimp the KCAL9 8:00 pm coverage - she rattled off the stories they would be covering and made the direct statemnt "new reaction on the murder of the terrorist mastermind." She didn't say something like "some calling OBL's death murder", etc.
So there you go: Local CBS news reader Sharon Tay in Los Angeles thinks SEAL Team 6 just conducted a state-sanctioned murder.
I wonder what their motive was? Maybe they were all named in his will as beneficiaries. Maybe they wanted to take control of his lucrative vinyards. Maybe he was blackmailing them all with nudie pictures they'd had taken as young men.
Who knows? But I love a murder mystery.

"I need to dust for fingerprints!
That is what you do for fingerprints, right?
You dust for them? Whatever it is, I'm doing
that fingerprint-thing."
Sharon loves traveling the world and speaks Spanish and Cantonese.
Ah. I notice "English" isn't listed. Maybe she just struggles with simple English words.

That does not imply any wrong-doing on the part of the SEALs... or even, necessarily, on the President's part. But it wasn't a killing following a trial.

A Poem for my Lover....
Stillness of the night gives way to
Lighting and thunder
Stranger danger my lover perceives
Urine pools at my hooves
My scat flyÂ’s aft
His voice cries out and then no more
The beasts fade into darkness
My Master, My Lover where have you gone
Stillness returns but is broken by the cries of my heart
Baaaaah Baaaaaaaaah
BaaaaaahÂ…Â…Â…

“In your day jobs, do not let Republicans turn this into continuing the Bush legacy. This has to be about Obama’s decisive leadership,” the guidance said. “He is the one who oversaw bringing bin Laden to justice, much like how Bush failed to do so at Tora Bora and then claimed Osama wasn’t a priority.”

I was listening to conservative radio guy Michael Graham this morning and I heard a really great call from a smart woman who has been a Republican since 1989.
She was so happy about Osama being killed by Obama that she celebrated by going to city hall and changing her voting registration from Republican to Unenrolled because she was sooooooo proud of her president.
See? I'm not the only one.

Assassination implies the one being killed has no opportunity to surrender. They stated in the account of the raid OBL was given that opportunity so I think assassination is the wrong word also. And generally when someone is shooting at you it is called self defense.
This would be analogous to saying the police assassinated a criminal that resisted arrest by firing at them.

Given everyone's tiptoeing around the issue of should we/shouldn't we assassinate Gadhaffi, apparently there is. At least in his case you could say that it would be the state-sanctioned assassination of a nation's leader, but still. Lockerbie. Come on.
Speaking of which, has the oh-so-terminally-ill-Lockerbie-Bomber died yet? If not, can we get SEAL Team 6 on that detail pronto?

No, there isn't something wrong, but I would like the Left to embrace the assassination option that their leader chose to use because I'm sick to death of having them put all sorts of restrictions on conservatives when they're in charge.
I'd also like to point out that there's a distinct difference, in my mind anyway, between offing Bin Laden and what Obama is doing (or trying to do) to Qaddafi. Bush/Cheney went to Congress and got their ok to go after OBL -- but I've missed when Obama/Biden did the same for the Krazy Kolonel.

Consequently, I would like the police to arrest one "Barack Hussein Obama, aka Barry Soetoro" immediately. He is the criminal mastermind that ordered the "hit" on Bin Laden.
I suggest a "trial" somewhere like "Berkely California."
Or if our allies in Pockeystahn do not agree with that, we can send this "Obama" fellow over there so they can hold the "trial" there.
It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make!

Strictly speaking, it was homicide. In fact if I remember my Susan Sarandon primer correctly, she has pointed out that "homicide" is listed as the cause of death on executed criminals.
HOWEVER --
If Miss Tay intended a more negative connotation, as in "Americans murdered an unarmed suspect," all I can say is:
Do not interfere when your enemy is killing himself.

Does anybody think it is likely that maybe we did take some causalities? It appears from what I have read of the ST6 they would never actually tell us due to their secrecy.

Help me here. Obama decided against the B-2 raid in March because he wanted OBL's body. (habeus corpus?) So, instead, he takes the much, much riskier action he did. Helicopters. Boots on the ground, etc. (BTW, why would that risk another Desert One or Blackhawk Down? Isn't Pakistan our ally? Don't the muzzies love us now that Obama gave that speech in Cairo? They should have been able to call AAA.) But I digress.
Anyway, the SEALS and the CIA go in. Ventilate OBL. Take a bunch of pictures, maybe even some real time video. And they carry OBL's corpse off the USS Carl Vinson for more pictures and high fives and a sensitive to Muslims burial at sea with the trash.
So where are the pictures on Day Two of the Obama victory lap? The pictures the obtaining of which required a substantial escalation in risk to the SEALS?
Don't suppose President Narcissus is holding out on the pics in order to milk the news cycle for this, do you?

Sadly, for some of us... she is technicly correct.
We are supposed to live in a Republic, where the rule of law is sacred, yet we constantly just IGNORE our own laws, instead of having the debate to FIX them.
From one viewpoint, according to our own laws, the President ordered a military unit to go into a Sovereign Nation, without an Act of War against said Nation, and assasinated a Civilian. "IF" as reported, they were not told to capture him... but to kill him then retrieve the body... this is very troubling (under both our laws, and the Geneva Convention which controls the legal actions of Military Forces).
It would have been EASY to fix this... a Law passed by Congress and signed by the President? Heck, a Trial in Abscentia with a Death Sentence?
What is troubling is the bluring of Lines on Military Action... we are mixing rolls of Intelligence and Military units... until the Military is no longer given the protection of the Geneva Convention, WITHOUT laying the Legal groundwork FIRST.

As Colonel Saito said: "Do not speak to me of rules. This is war! This is not a game of cricket"
All I know is the Drudge headline which said he was unarmed. By none of the rules this administration likes to yield against it's adversaries (domestic, political adversaries) is it OK to shoot an unarmed man in the head. That is worse than putting them in Guantanamo, or refusing to tell them which direction mecca is for prayers. In fact, it is murder under most definitions of the word, even in wartime. I say good on her.
I also say this was the only acceptable outcome and good on barry for choosing it. The problem is that the left, led by barry, (and kerry, and the media,..) wants to make believe there are some set of "rules" that we need to follow when dealing with muslims and their war on Western Civilization and that Bush violated all of them.
Pointing out the holes in their logic is the only defense.

And when someone came over and told ... me the news, my stomach sank. IÂ’m not in any way naive about what al-Qaida is. ItÂ’s an organization that terrifies me. I know it intimately.
But I’m also intimately familiar with the collective humiliation that we have imposed on the Muslim world. The expansion of military occupation that took place throughout, in particular the Arab world, following 9/11—and that this presence of American imperial bases, dotted, not just in Iraq and Afghanistan, but in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Doha—is one that has done more to engender hatred and acts of terror than anything ever orchestrated by Osama bin Laden.

Maybe, but don't forget that our guys trained for this for weeks while OBL's bodyguards wipe their asses with their hands. If no one got hurt on the hard chopper landing, I would wager that no assaulter took anything worse than bumps or bruises. They had night vision, body armor, superior weapons, and advanced close quarter battle training, the bad guys had the poor judgement not to surrender.
I had a 18 year old kid in my basic training platoon say that he considered any taking of life, even in combat, to be murder. I told him he was a silly bint and he was stripping language of any and all meaning.

My question (and it really is a question, I don't know the answer) is whether it would've been better to capture Osama alive or just kill him on the spot.
I'm perfectly OK with the double-tap solution, but recent reports are suggesting that Osama wasn't actually armed, and his "human shield" wife was intentionally trying to shield / protect him. We may never know the truth of the details.
AQ can now credibly (in the view of their fans) claim him to be a "martyr". Were he captured alive, not putting up a fight, humiliated by being kept in solitary confinement until his "trial" and execution- might that have been better? If nothing else, it would probably shut the conspiracy theorists up.
OTOH, it might inspire terrorists to take hostages in a misguided attempt to free him. It would also mean lots of hand-wringing by the Obama admin regarding how to try him.
Again, just asking because I'm not sure myself.

There is evil in the world, and sometimes laws and compassion are not enough to deal with it. At those times you need to shoot it in the head.
Let's call it murder. Let's say that it is the willing murder of an unarmed evil. At least that way we are acknowledging that evil exists and that we (or rather, Seal Team 6) killed it.
Then maybe we can admit that sometimes you don't kill evil, but instead you lock it in a room in a secret prison and rip it's fingernails off until it tells you what you want to know. And other times you hand evil off to allies that can do the dirty work for you. If this bint thinks it was murder, then we are halfway there. If she thinks it was a mistake to kill him, then there is no hope, but if she thinks it was murder, and it was the only option, then we are on the right track.
Posted by: nine coconuts at May 03, 2011 08:54 AM (uz3hs)
I think the biggest risk in taking him alive is that the US gov. has no way to handle him that doesn't give him a lot of publicity, lawyers, and a stage. Maybe before the left intentionally gutted our ability to handle this stuff effectively (led by barry) it was an option, but even then i think a poor one.
The only reason to keep him alive is if he had intelligence value, and i guess the curriers would be just as useful there.

Nothing will shut conspiracy theorists up. Taking him alive would just mean he was working for us all along. As does killing him - we feared what he would say, of course.
AQ can claim he's a martyr all they like. But he's a martyr that got that way when he thought he was safe, hundreds of miles from the front, and within yards of his protector's army.
That kind of martyrdom gives the other martyrs in waiting pause.

And I see no reason to take prisoners. OBL is not a signatory of the Geneva conventions.
I get that, though I wouldn't call the killing of Osama "collateral damage". He was the target.
I'm not talking in terms of a moral, ethical or legal dilemma, but questioning what would have served our interests the best- capturing or killing him. Water under the bridge now, but the impression I get is that we did have the opportunity to capture him alive, but decided against it.
