— DrewM Let me save you the trouble and skip to their conclusion...yes.
Among the bits of evidence?
China policy, for example, has surely not been much on Perry’s mind during his time in Austin. And that showed when, in an interview last week with Laura Ingraham, he responded to a question about whether a rising China is good for the United States with platitudes that prompted the conservative talk show host to complain that he was only offering “broad generalities.”
Anything beyond "hope' and "change" is far more detailed than Obama offered curing his campaign. Just a reminder, when Obama did dare to tread beyond platitudes in his campaign he failed miserably until he was able to cheat off John McCain's work.
Apparently flying planes in the military is for idiots.
Trained as an Air Force pilot right out of A&M, Perry was “taught to trust your information,” said Johnson. And associates say the same lessons that Perry learned when he was flying C-130s apply now.
“Pilots execute flight plans,” said Miller. “They have a plan, they fly a certain pattern and that’s the way he’s always operated — he has a flight plan for what he’s trying to do and he executes.”
Where exactly does this guy think a flight plan comes from if not the pilot who has ultimate responsibility for the flight? I don't think being a pilot means you are a genius but it does mean a couple of things...
To fly a plane like a C-130 you have to understand how multiple systems work and interact with each other. You don't have to be an electrical engineer but you have to have a working knowledge of electrical systems. You don't have to be physicist but you have to have a passing familiarity with the physics of flight. You don't have to be a meteorologist but you have to have an understanding of weather and the mechanics of the environment you are going to fly into.
When you learn to fly, you get to learn a good bit about a lot of things. You might not be an expert on any one of these things but you have to be able to grasp the basics, how they interact with each other and how to balance competing challenges and limitations.
More importantly, as an intellectual exercise learning to fly (especially at the military level) means havi8ng a disciplined mind. You get hit with a lot of information and you have to be able to retain it, prioritize it and most importantly, when push comes to shove, be able to use it in the proper way.
That's actually not bad training for an executive when you think about it.
Mike Baselice, Perry’s longtime pollster, said his client is of the Ronald Reagan school of management: “Trust people and manage well.”“His job is to go meet voters,” said Baselice. “We’ll figure out the details of the messaging.”
This of course has David "Big Brain" Frum in tizzy.
Voters would do well to ask: Who’s this “we” that will really be running the country during a Perry presidency?
Good advice to follow when considering voting for any candidate. This may come as news to Frum, but every President, Governor, and executive of any kind relies on advisers. No one can possibly master every bit of expertise required to run a large organizatio, especially one as large and complicated as the US government. Anyone who tries to do that is a fool who would be terrible at their job. (For more on the genius that is David Frum, here's a post I did at my little blog on his ideal health care plan. Short version...it's ObamaCare)
But even a presumed genius like Barack Obama has advisers (Tim "Turbo Tax" Giethner ring a bell?). Why just today the President nominated a new chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, Alan Krueger. Krueger's big idea a few years back? A $500 BILLION a year VAT. If that's smart, I'll take the so-called "idiot", thank you very much.
A lot of this comes down to what a person means by intelligence. Everyone just assumes Obama is a bright guy but there's precious little proof of it.
He hasn't released his college transcripts, so we have to take his academic genius on faith. Not that they would prove much beyond measuring his ability to regurgitate that approved liberal talking points to liberal professors.
We are told he's a "constitutional scholar" but his one bit of writing is a Harvard Law Review student note.
Even if you accept the premiss that Obama is a brilliant guy and we are lucky to have a man of such a singular intellect willing to lower himself to serve us, shouldn't we consider what that's gotten us? 9.2% unemployment when it was supposed to go no higher than 8%, an exploding deficit when he promised to cut it in half and yet..
Yet we simply are to accept on professions of Obama's mental genius on fatih (because you can be damn sure Politico will never do an investigation into Obama's intelligence).
This is the same garbage the press pulled on Reagan back in the day. He was the big talking, dangerous fool while Jimmy Carter was the thoughtful , well meaning intellectual. Which was the more successful President?
Politics is a results oriented business not a college faculty debating club. By that measure Obama has repeatedly shown he is an idiot that is in way over his head.
If Obama wants to be judged on the quality of his thoughts without the pesky problem of actually having to produce results, he should skip the reelection bid and get a cushy job at the college of his choice. The rest of us would be better off for it.
BTW- I'd love for any of our liberal friends who read the blog to offer some evidence of Obama's intelligence. I hear so much about it, I'm sure you guys will be able to rattle off three to five bits of evidence without breaking a sweat.

Obama fails on every front.
Perry has succeeded more often than he fails -- his two biggest failures being the Gardasil vaccine where he failed at communication and had to back off and the Trans Texas Corridor where he also failed at communication and lost.

The Tea Party seems to be developing a bad reputation here in Utah with traditional Republicans for being fringe-y. I've been asking folks about the caucus process that we have here and so far everyone I've asked about it has rolled their eyes and complained that it is dominated by fringe people -- and they are including the TP with the Paulbots in that category.
I denounce myself.

Actually, this kind of thing was only a matter of time. People can't focus on just one thing, to the exclusion of all else, for very long. At some point, other things will factor in.
Now, as far as it goes, the Tea Party being anti-jihadi is fine (I'd prefer they stick to domestic things, like the AGW and other forms of Government over-reach, but it's not my call). What I tend to think, though, is that too many Tea Party types are Fanatics of the first order (not a bad thing to be a fanatic about, after all), and so are more susceptible to being deceived when they get outside the zone they know, but are still in an area they care about.

This is the credentialed class (reporters, the academy, pundits, etc) trying to push the notion that formal education, degrees and clearly defined knowledge is necessary for sucess or higher office.

I think it may be good to just let it lie for a bit. If Palin jumps into the race, they will have to shift their attention to defending her record and if she doesn't jump into the race, they will have to actually find a candidate. Right now they don't have a candidate so they don't have to defend their candidate, they only have to attack other peoples' candidates.
Plus, Perry needs to do some debates, which I think are coming up this week or next iirc. Once he does that, you can direct them to those clips and let Perry refute their charges in his own words, as it were.

Perry’s campaign strategy is to talk only about jobs, jobs, jobs, no matter what the question. That’s both smart and necessary, but jobs-jobs-jobs isn’t the money trinity with his base. Perry already hit that station with his prayer rally and various dog whistles to the congregation: He’s not sure anyone knows how old Earth is, evolution is just a “theory,” and global warming isn’t man-made.
Perry understands that his base cares more that the president is clear on his ranking in the planetary order than whether he can schmooze with European leaders or, heaven forbid, the media. And this is why Perry could easily steal the nomination from Romney.
And also why he probably canÂ’t win a national election, in which large swaths of the electorate would prefer that their president keep his religion close and be respectful of knowledge that has evolved from thousands of years of human struggle against superstition and the kind of literal-mindedness that leads straight to the dark ages.
Faith and reason are not mutually exclusive, but Perry makes you think they are.

2) For those who want to argue that it "could have been worse" on the economy, you need to first explain why the normal business cycle suddenly ceased existing the moment Obama took office. Throughout history, economies have gone up and down with recoveries following recessions/depressions.
For all of Obama's rhetoric about the "next Great Depression," the past recession lasted exactly TWO MONTHS longer than the average recession. If you look at the rate of GDP growth, the pattern is very obvious: It hit bottom in 2008 Q4. EVERY QUARTER following that one the rate of GDP growth improved.
Right up until ObamaCare passed in March 2010. From that point on, the GDP growth DECLINES every quarter.
The ONLY impact Obama has had on the economy has been the passage of ObamaCare, and the impact of its passage is undeniably clear.

The problem isn't that Obama is stupid.
It's that he THINKS he's so incredibly smart he can run the entire US economy and the lives of 310 million people better than they can do so for themselves. And he THINKS he's so smart that prolonged 9%+ unemployment, a terrible housing recession, and pathetic economic growth MUST be due to someone else's mistakes, and not to the government's failed policies which he has prescribed.
It takes brains to know that NOBODY is, or ever can be, that smart.
So by that standard, Perry is much smarter than Obama.

They already showed us what levels they will stoop to to destroy someone. There's no limit, because you are dealing with power-hungry fucks who have no moral compass and zero compunction with regards to fucking their enemies. Many in the conservative movement sat back and let it happen to Palin and even helped it along by agreeing that they "had a point" with some of their dreadful bullshit, not realizing it was us and not she who was actually under attack.
Some of you have now latched onto Perry, thinking it will somehow be different because he's so amazing or something. It's not going to be pretty and I genuinely hope he skates through it with minimal damage, especially because Bambi is so weak right now. But you were warned.

Two minor (so minor I hesitate to mention them) differences.
1) Unlike too many of the Palinistas, we're not decrying this as OUTRAGE! but, rather, laughing at it and pointing out how stupid they must think the rest of us are.
2) So far, Rick Perry is skating through relatively unscathed. Virtually every time a piece like this (well, not like this, because it's so transparently a hit-piece, but you know what I mean) came out against Palin, her popularity dropped further. The exact opposite (for the moment, at least) appears to be happening to Rick "Hey, I'm the current front runner, and it's making the establishment foam at the mouth" Perry.
Now, might they manage to damage him anyway? Yeah, it could happen. But it's a lot less likely with Rick Perry (who has a huge record of accomplishment on which to run) than it was with Sarah "Who?" Palin 4 years ago.

Oh, I completely believe Perry will escape much of the effects.
Sure, the left will try as hard as they can, but I think Perry will manage to overcome it. Not by magic, but simply because he's got that long and great record that points to Jobs Jobs Jobs. It's a coherent and simple reply to attacks that makes the attacker look petty and dishonest.
Too many voters will come to see Perry as serious and the attacks as an attempt to change the topic. That's how he'll avoid being Palinized.

Now, personally, I believe that was true in the Halcyon days of the Bush Presidency- Rick Perry (all of Austin, really) was just kind of there, making sure things worked, and Kay Bailey was "bringing home the bacon."
Then we realized what that bacon was costing, and said, "How about you just let us slaughter our own hogs?" She didn't get the message, and crashed and burned in the Primary.

Why would liberals want to censor common ideas from education? Right or wrong, kids should understand all the major ideas in play today. I should understand behaviorism and Newtonian physics even if they are not accurate.
I think they are falling into a trap... not one Perry set, but one of their own making. They will act hysterical no matter what Perry says, to insist he is weird and crazy, but in this case, they only show that it's they who are crazy and unreasonable.
Does anyone really think it matters that the President agree with the left on their various theories? Global warming? Seriously? No, the voters just want a president who can do their job. If Perry believes in zombies and aliens, he still managed to do his job, while Obama completely failed at his.
And every time they go this route they are building up to the moment where Perry pulls a Clinton playbook move and 'defends' himself by noting his opponent's religious views (CIA is murdering black people with AIDs and 9/11 was justice, etc etc).

Last time I checked, you needed tremendous academic credentials to get into Columbia and Harvard law. And even more stellar credentials to get into elite academia.
Yes, stellar academic credentials such as being a National Merit Scholar.
Ooops! He wasn't one.
Hell, he wasn't even a semi-finalist.
Can we have your next illogical assertion please? We'll try to pick up the pace in disposing of them, if you could just keep throwing them out there a little faster.
When the bane of liberals 2000-2008, yes, that dim bulb George W. Bush can bother to release his less than stellar grades, and yet the intellectual giant of our age one Barack Hussein Obama cannot, well, it's just a logical assumption to wonder why not.
Hell, even marginally qualified John Effin' Kerry released his underwhelming grades.
Yet, curiously, Obama has not.

Anyways, I would agree Perry is not a dimwit, as his piloting experience and political history would reveal (just as bush was no idiot).
At last I checked, being able to read a teleprompter well does not make someone a "great speaker" take away his training wheels and a someone from a high school debate team could show him up.
As far as "teaching"; As far as I know he never did hold down a permanent position, and was simply their to guest lecture. Also as far as I know the yard stick by which you measure intelligence in Academia; since that is where you purport he existed, is through published work.
It would be like me an engineer, had I not in the 15 or so years of my career, never actually designed *anything*; Though I held positions where I *should* have designed something. I would be laughed at by a potential employer, if I told him I graduated from a good school, but refused to show him my grades, AND couldn't produce one major work over years of being in the industry. The presumption of intelligence and competence that is first garnered by a college degree has an expiration date. Because all schools can graduate marginally intelligent students, even with academic honors, given the right circumstances.

Obama is not just the greatest speaker in modern times; he is the most powerful writer since Julius fuckin Caesar.
Rocco Landesman, the chairman for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) explained in 2009:
"This is the first president that actually writes his own books since Teddy Roosevelt and arguably the first to write them really well since Lincoln. If you accept the premise, and I do, that the United States is the most powerful country in the world, then Barack Obama is the most powerful writer since Julius Caesar. Fair enough. I'm just on edge as of late for Dan Riehl types that are declaring everyone who doesn't support a Palin candidacy to be something less than conservative.
I'm sure you're right that the MSM will try to destroy Perry, but I don't think they'll be successful. He's a fairly savvy politician who has successfully run one of the largest states in the union. He's been dealing with media scrutiny for a long time.
Palin didn't have that luxury being from a backwater state the MSM doesn't care about and most Americans don't know much about. So when she was thrown into the limelight, she didn't have the neccessary experience to draw from.

Sorta reminds me how Obama listed running a presidential campaign as being a qualification to be President.
Seriously, dude forget his academic career. You might want to re-examine some of your "going in" assumptions about Obama's intelligence based on his track record alone. I mean, the record is there. His inability to change course when his approach isn't working marks his mind as inflexible - and therefore clearly second-rate.
Bill Clinton he's not.

To those listening throughout Eastern Europe, a special word: Although I cannot be with you, I address my remarks to you just as surely as to those standing here before me. For I join you, as I join your fellow countrymen in the West, in this firm, this unalterable belief: Es gibt nur ein Berlin. [There is only one Berlin.] ;">Behind me stands a wall that encircles the free sectors of this city, part of a vast system of barriers that divides the entire continent of Europe. From the Baltic, south, those barriers cut across Germany in a gash of barbed wire, concrete, dog runs, and guard towers. Farther south, there may be no visible, no obvious wall. But there remain armed guards and checkpoints all the same--still a restriction on the right to travel, still an instrument to impose upon ordinary men and women the will of a totalitarian state. Yet it is here in Berlin where the wall emerges most clearly; here, cutting across your city, where the news photo and the television screen have imprinted this brutal division of a continent upon the mind of the world. Standing before the Brandenburg Gate, every man is a German, separated from his fellow men. Every man is a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar. ;">President von Weizsacker has said, "The German question is open as long as the Brandenburg Gate is closed." Today I say: As long as the gate is closed, as long as this scar of a wall is permitted to stand, it is not the German question alone that remains open, but the question of freedom for all mankind. Yet I do not come here to lament. For I find in Berlin a message of hope, even in the shadow of this wall, a message of triumph...

Ah.
Okay, the abortion pledge just says (as far as I know) that he'll only appoint strict construnctionalist (or, as some say: intentionalist) justices. No problem there.
The Gay Marriage pledge... well, over 50% of the nation agrees with that. The mainstream position is that homosexuals shouldn't get married. Add to that the very rapid evidence we've had (since SCOAMF decided, unilaterally, that DOMA was unconstitutional) that the "gay lobby" is really the "sexual deviancy" lobby- and they're already trying to make pedophilia "normal."
I'm not seeing a problem with either of those pledges.

Clinton was a "policy wonk" and "brilliant," until the Media decided Obama was the Second Coming of Einstein.
Reagan was stupid, Bush was stupid, McCain was a vampire (remember that idiotic magazine photo that was doctored by some liberal cunt?), Palin was Stupid, now Perry is The Stupid.

That said, he's not "open borders" as some would suggest, and he's not exactly "pro-amnesty" either. I kind of think he hopes that "secure the border" will sell well enough, and take long enough, that he never has to answer the question of what we do with the 12m+ illegals we already have.

From what little we are allowed to know, he never worked as a lawyer. Amazing fact given his "Harvard Law Review Editor" resume. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out the internal polling has Obama in deep trouble for next year's election. Ergo the left believes it has to preempt Perry's candidacy. (To a lesser extent they're also simply engaging in standard leftist projection.) The personal attacks on Perry's intellect were predicable. As we get closer to the key primaries they'll increase in scope and in viciousness too. They'll go after his wife. They'll go after his kids. So on, so forth.

(And you'd all say "I hate that motherfucker!")
He made a comment to my wife in 2008 about how Obama was being "groomed" for this since he was 20. It was a very cryptic comment then and he would not expand on it. But looking back, I think he was saying that there was a network of friends throughout academia who knew Frank Davis Marshall and were there to ease young Barry's journey through the Ivies and beyond.
If that's even remotely true, it explains everything.
I would also point out this guy now has serious buyer's remorse.

There are many, many milionaires in this world and quite a few billionaires. There are people who lead enormous corporations with tens of thousands of employees. There are great humanitarians and leaders of nations far and wide, but there have only been 44 presidents in the history of this nation.
There is no position higher in status or influence in this world.

And my academic performance was a whole lot milk soaked toast made into a nothing burger topped with bland sauce. The Neutral Planet called and asked if I was interested in a internship and I said "meh". And I have published work. And that's just while I was at school. Professionally I've produced many work products that are representative of my design history.
I have a hard time with the void, and the "IVY!!! GRADEZ!!!" argument. You say Obama was consistent. Well that is one huge inconsistency for an academic.
Bush was an Oil guy. If you went to him and said show me the oil, trust me he could. He could describe the where's and how's of his operation and show you where he drilled and why, and what he had produced.
Obama; the academic, with good credentials but nothing to show for it.

That is a good point. I was always amazed when the left continually argued Bush was an idiot, or even mentally retarded. You do not get to the Presidency if you are are an idiot.
But intelligence is only one requirement to be a successful president, and honestly not an overly important one. Far more important is the ability to choose good subordinates and set overarching themes of critical importance to the country for those subordinates to work on. Most of our great presidents had these abilities - Washington, Lincoln, Reagan.
Even viewed from an ideologically neutral viewpoint, Obama has failed on both counts. His best picks have been merely competent, and his high level choices decidedly incompetent - Biden, Geithner, etc.
And the themes he has pursued? The country needs process on economic growth and deep spending cuts while Obama has focused on intentionally damaging the economy (in the interests of environmentalism and "fairness") and opening the budget spigots.

Because a 2000+ mile fence is a lot more problematic than the one Israel uses, and, as currently designed, isn't all that good anyway. Moreover, there are parts of the border (go down to Big Bend, Texas, sometime) where a fence just isn't going to work, but sufficiently determined people can still cross.
He does support the use of drones to patrol the borders, and an increase in the border patrol and the national guard presence on the border. So, not exactly open borders, he just doesn't think the border fence is the best way to secure the border (not sure I agree with him, there, but, as I said before, I can see where he's coming from).
As for the "instate tuition for illegals" a: Not actually his policy- the legislation started the process under GW. b: (because I know a is weak tea), we have a very different relationship with Mexico in Texas than most other states. As a result, our politicians often have nuanced views, shall we say (I don't agree, but I'm a hardliner). That said, the "in state tuition for illegals" stipulated 3 things that make it less bad (not good, just less bad):
1- said illegal had to enter as a minor (that is, they couldn't be held criminally culpable for their entry). 2- They had to have spent at least the last 3 years in Texas schools, and must have graduated (I believe with a C+ GPA, but I could be mistaken there). 3- They had to apply, normally, for citizenship.
Like I said, I can't (and won't) completely defend him, but as I've done more research, I've actually become more sanguine with his positions. They're still not strong enough for me, but they're miles better than anything any Democrat would ever come up with.

What I read from Perry's own words on the fence was that he thought it was impractical. IIRC he favored fencing select areas (I think he said high-density metro areas), with border patrols making up the rest of the difference.
The tuition thing is disappointing, but I think several states have that now, even if Texas was first. And when I read the law, it was not targeted specifically at illegals. It was a regional thing. My recollection is that it included bordering states (or counties from bordering states), including Mexico. I've also read that it has been tightened since it originally passed (back when Perry first assumed office), but I haven't bothered to read up on it.
As of April of this year, these are the states with in-state tuition for illegals: Texas, California, Utah, New York, Washington, Illinois, Kansas, New Mexico, Nebraska and Wisconsin. I think Maryland was considering a similar measure this year.
So if that is the extent of his softness on immigration, I am ok with that, particularly given that he has clearly stated a preference for enforcement first before even considering a "path to citizenship." In addition, him billing the feds for the costs Texas incurred incarcerating illegals was a nice touch that indicates he thinks it's a federal issue.

Seriously? This is your problem? The President doesn't appoint low level anything. He appoints his cabinet advisers and the top-level positions. They then set policy.
Believing otherwise is like John Carry's "Edward Nigma" in the stupid franchise of Batman movies, "You hired me. Well, you weren't there, but it was your name on the hiring slip."
It doesn't matter how pro-choice some low level HHS employee is; if they know the policy is "life first" and that they'll be s-canned if they don't comply, they'll comply.

I don't blame you, really. I've admitted he's weak on the border for my tastes. Ulsterman's "source" is not real, and all of his posts are fantasy.

Say again? I have just pointed out that he will not "have to" ignore the pledge in any way. That, indeed he can keep it with a completely clear conscience, and probably would have abided (abode?) by its terms even without signing it. I'll say again: I fully believe that anyone Rick Perry actually appoints (remember: that's cabinet positions and senior-level policy staff) who would be "pertinent" to the abortion discussion will be pro-life. That's exactly what the pledge says anyway.
So, for signing something that says he'll do what he was going to do anyway, he gets to mark a check-box with his base. I'm not seeing how that is less-than-sound decision making.

He admitted he failed to communicate with Texans before acting. In that case, I'd say 75% of his failure was to listen (which he admitted himself), but it does also seem as though he failed to explain why he wanted to make it "opt-out" instead of "opt-in." Had he done a better job of that, he might not have had so much push-back.

I don't care about someone's IQ. I care about their functional intelligence. They need to be able to communicate their goals clearly, assemble and lead a good team of advisors, map out a plan of actions to achieve the goal, and actually accomplish their goals.
Obama fails on every front.
IMHO, Dick and his regime are succeeding in every one of their goals for this nation. One just has to be thinking in terms of the destruction rather than the defending and protecting the US Constitution and the sovereignty of this country.

Well, my question there is if that's because of necessity (to avoid getting his EO overturned) or because he really reconsidered his position.
As I understand it, the opt-out was a way to get the insurers to pay for it. I could be wrong, but I think that's what I've been reading here. If that's the case, then I can see sticking with the opt-out mode. He simply should have spent more time persuading people and not done it by EO.
Personally, I would not have been a fan of administering the vaccine through the schools simply because there is very weak evidence that it is transmittable via casual contact. But in a ten-year term of office, any governor is going to make decisions I don't favor. There's nothing about that decision that worries me in terms of how Perry would function as POTUS.

Just remember the that the Tea Party is a movement, not an organization. It contains people of all parties. It has left of center, right of center, center, conservative, and, yes, the "War of the Undead States" types.

Contrast being given a template to follow, compared to creating your own template to complete. How much leeway is a pilot granted to improvise during a flight plan without specific authorization given regulations and protocol? The author was stating that its one thing to be given orders and to execute them, and quite another thing to be the CinC.

Trust but Verify seems more the resolution after getting caught with pants down rather than a policy from an onset.
Perry is no Reagan who knew how to humbly compliment his harshest critics admitting their assessment to be honest, accurate and helpful.

Brown is the leading purveyor of the Uncurriculum or as they call it the "New Curriculum", where students are allowed to enroll in any class they wish to and given a degree no matter what classes they took. And as far as grades go, At the initiative of the instructor, courses may be designated to be graded on a Satisfactory/No Credit basis for all students enrolled. And given the curriculum standards, you know classes are chosen based on the grading policy of the professor.
If you are talking to an Ivy Leaguer and they were pre-med, they're very well educated, but otherwise not so much...
kore kourses are for chumps

There is a familiar whiff of naivete and chubby failure about it.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
But I bet he votes for Obama again, doesn't he? And hates on Perry at every public opportunity. Because anything else would hurt the cause.
