— Ace It's not Allah's fault -- the prognostication he's forced to link are just stupid.
I have to link it too. It's really dumb.
A guy called Lichtman is calling the race, and he says Obama wins.
There are 13 keys to victory, he says, and whoever grabs six wins.
Now this guy claims Obama has nine in his pocket:
1. No contested primary2. Incumbency
3. No third-party candidate
4. Major domestic-policy changes in his first term
5. No social unrest
6. No major scandals
7. No major foreign-policy failures
8. Major foreign-policy achievements in his first term (killing Bin Laden)
9. Little charisma by his likely opponent
Um, "no social unrest"? Does he mean rioting? Well, the public's in a riotous mood.
"Major domestic policy changes?" Let me explain something, that's because such changes are usually popular. ObamaCare has been unpopular since it was snuck through the Senate in the dead of night and has only become more so.
Shouldn't this indicator actually flip the other way when the domestic policy changes in question are extremely unpopular?
"No major scandals" -- We'll see. He's probably right because the one thing the media can definitely do is refuse to report a scandal.
"No major foreign-policy failures" -- This one's debatable.
"Little charisma by his likely opponent" -- Going to take that one to the bank? I assume he means Mitt Romney, but the problem there is 1, Mitt Romney is sorta growing on me, personality wise, 2, Romney appears to be a stronger-than-usual challenger, and 3, it's not even super-likely to be Romney, given Perry is leading him and not by a little bit.
Lichtman claims he doesn't know what the short-term economic situation will look like in 2012, so he can't assign that one either way. Oddly, he is a precognitive psychic on seeing the future and knowing that Obama will not see Gunwalker blossom into a major scandal, and that Obama's opponent will have low charisma.
He also knows that, say, Libya won't blow up in Obama's face. Or Iraq. Or Afghanistan. Or... Iran.
But on the economy? Gee, who could guess on that one, huh?
Allah writes:
All of which assumes, of course, that this will be an ordinary election like the past seven were. Maybe it will; maybe there’s no such thing as an extraordinary election. But the state of the economy is surely extraordinary, poised as it is for a double-dip, and unemployment is extraordinary compared to any other era over the past 75 years. That is to say, we’re assuming that these “Keys” are equally weighted in election after election, no matter the circumstances, when basic awareness of the current political climate suggests the two economic Keys will be weighted way more heavily than any of the others.
There are keys Licthman could have never anticipated -- like a $16 trillion dollar debt, which we're adding to at the rate of $1.5 trillion per year.
How about the US credit downgrade? Unprecedented, so you can't even include it as a predictive variable.

One of "professor" Alan Lichtman's 13 points is about unemployment.
And I'll argue that that point carries more weight than all the other points combined.

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss Lichtman's 13 Points.
The points are subjective but good. It's Lichtman's conclusions that are wrong. But, again, some of the points are purely subjective.

Lichtman's success is due to the points' subjective nature. It allows him to go in after the fact and claim that it was his fault in assigning the wrong Boolean value to it, and then he can come back in the next election and look good.

yeah but History says otherwise:
- less then 50% of our Presidents have served more then one term and that's even when you count none-elected Presidents and terms they were elected to as incumbents (Teddy Roosevelt, Coolidge, LBJ, etc)
- we haven't had 3 straight Presidencies that were elected to 2 terms since Jefferson, Madison, Monroe
- high unemployment since WWII = no re-lection
- Presidents w/ approvals below 47+ = no re-election
- Presidents who win a new term as incumbents tend to GAIN support by winning states they lost the last time around and gain in popular vote (FDR in 40, Madison in 1812 being the exception to that)
we are due for a 1 termer

9 Agree re: foreign policy "success."
I suppose we'll have to wait for October 2012's Hollywood opus to discover how Obama personally re-made the strategy and tactics of killing Bin Laden in his own image and how this led to immediate success after years of Dummy Bush's dithering.
In truth, we all know Obama simply let the Bush era manhunt proceed and events fortuitously played out on his watch. I'd entertain the argument that Obama might have been more willing to go into Pakistan than W, but I'd need to see some strong evidence that W wouldn't have seized the same opportunity before I gave it any traction.
Other than that very debatable point, his foreign policy has resulted in no benefits discernable to either the well-informed or casual observers.

Lichtman developed his 13 Keys in 1981. They test the performance of the party that holds the presidency. If six or more of the 13 keys go against the party in power, then the opposing party wins.“The keys have figured into popular politics a bit,” Lichtman says. “They’ve never missed. They’ve been right seven elections in a row. A number that goes way beyond statistical significance in a record no other system even comes close to.”
Anyone study statistics?
How can you call something statistically significant and draw any big conclusions when your sample size is essentially seven?
I could be full of it but that smells, doesn't it? Minimum sample size is 3. Confidence is at best in the 70% with a sample size of 3. However, that assumes objective measures - his are not objective.

No, you can do stats on that small of a sample.
The thing is, though, that his criteria are so subjective, and there are so many other ways to predict who wins elections (such as polls), that unless he's been living in an underground dome for the past thirty years, I have no confidence in how he has been scoring the candidates.
Saying someone has no major scandals. What makes it major? The effect on your polls, of course!
So it's bullshit.
Quantifying subjective criteria does not make the analysis objective!

All Obama's government-financial terrors are an electoral wash. Half of Americans would say Palin did 'em, if you put her name in the poll.
Oddly, he is a precognitive psychic on seeing the future and knowing that Obama will not see Gunwalker blossom into a major scandal, and that Obama's opponent will have low charisma.
Oblig.trade has "no NPR-in-the-car/CNN-at-the-airport/Newsweek-at-the-dentist rube will ever know what Gunwalker is (except a 'racist right-wing conspiracy smear')" by 80, and "charisma is a media-chorus effect that Republicans don't have access to" by...all the points.

I wouldnt dismiss Lichtman out of hand. Nobody except for us wingnuts, who visit the usual blogs, knows about Gunrunner and F&F. If you asked people on the street they would think you were talking about a bad movie. And keep in mind that Clintons scandals didnt caught up with him until after his reelection, actually in the middle of his second term, despite the fact that words like "whitewater" and "Paula Jones" were already known when he came into the White House '93.
Its similar with Obamas foreign policy. He steps into it everywhere, its a bunch of little catastrophes, but the media report it very selectively. We dont hear much about Egypt anymore, because its getting ugly there and the media shift attention to Lybia where they can sell it as a lil victory for Obama. Or have we heard something about Iran from the (liberal) big players in the news-media lately?
Obama can still win 2012 and we should keep in mind that while he is a scoamf, campaigning is the only thing that he is actually good at.

That's a weird comment. It's so random. It's important to leave Obama's kids out of our political talks. The right has done much better about this than the left did with Bush's family or Palin's or really any republican family.. That's not an admission that Obama's family is perfect. We just don't care about that. But for the record, anyone putting their family through a presidential election or lifestyle is being kinda selfish. Obama's kids will never know a normal life. They will always be elites, and probably politicians too, but it's sad. I'd wait until they were adults before running myself, but then, I would never make it in politics since I have a soul.

How can you call something statistically significant and draw any big conclusions when your sample size is essentially seven?
I work in a field where I deal with this issue. You need a minimum sample size of 30 to determine statistically significant differences. Of course it is possible to perform calculations on smaller sample sizes, but they are subject to such great variability that you can't determine statistical significance.

I haven't read through all the comments yet, but I think one thing that wasn't listed is the whole class war issue. Never have I seen a president and congressional leaders make absolute enemies of at least half of the voting bloc in this country. Probably more than half if it's true that conservatives outnumber liberals.
Maybe it should be listed as "Public Unity" or something. Or maybe it would be under Social Unrest. Regardless, I have never before been pushed to the point of openly disliking people simply because they are liberal. Thanks to teh SCOAMF and Pelosi and Reid, et al, I am at that point.

The sad thing is I know the exact place where he's holding the meet-n-greet. My wife's grandparents shop there.
The timing just stinks, though. Besides my dental fun, the wife's got a booth at a SF con that weekend, and I'll need to help out there, too.
Now I'll shut up, 'cause I'm turning into That Guy.

Oh, absolutely.
I have one relative, an elderly godmother, who is a New England lib... but who did actually vote for Scott Brown, fwiw. She's clearly casting about looking for an alternative to Obama. She was asking about Huntsman a few months ago, but I tried to steer her clear of him.
My dad and I were talking about her and trying to figure out how to steer her to a viable Republican. I'm not sure if she'll go for Perry, but I'm going to give it a go.

2. Incumbency = Dud duh
3. No third-party candidate = We'll see
4. Major domestic-policy changes in his first term = Yes, the one that polls at 38%, 33% of independents
5. No social unrest = Coming to a Liberty Square near him
6. No major scandals = Resignations of the head of the ATF and the US Atty in AZ?
7. No major foreign-policy failures = Wait for it. Arab Spring will be Jihad Summer next year
8. Major foreign-policy achievements in his first term (killing Bin Laden) = Europe implodes, Libya goes the way of Egypt, and he continues to bow at the feet of China
Much of this can be covered-up by media cheerleaders, but the cheerleaders only further discredit themselves.

I'm kinda slow but don't nos. 1 and 2 kind of go together. If you have the incumbency doesn't that by definition mean you don't get no. 1. Maybe there's an example in the past of a sitting incumbent being challenged but I don't remember. Otherwise this seems like stacking the deck a little. or am I missing something?

Rick Perry is hotter than Scott Brown..... Has she ever watched any of his speeches?
That's the thing. So many people have not really even seen Rick Perry in action yet, giving one of his great speeches. And he's already leading in the polls with conservatives who have heard of him.
Perry gave a great speech at the VFW convention yesterday.... But it's like it didn't even happen. It has been largely ignored by the media (even Fox), and even the big conservative blogs are ignoring it.

not only that but an incumbent has even been kicked out as a President in a primary:
Cleveland, Pierce, and Wilson all lost primary bids as President but to be fair Cleveland and Wilson weren't too serious as they were aiming for a 3rd term. LBJ was also primaried in 1968 but he dropped out before it could go on. FDR was primaried in 1940 by his own VP! and of course there was Taft, Ford, Carter, and HW Bush

I doubt it.
I haven't started working her yet.
His vulnerability as far as she's concerned is going to be the "anti education, anti science" smear. She's the widow of an academic (my godfather, a former dean), she is an continuing lecturer at a university (doing good work, actually, helping teach English as a second language), and she's got the whole upper crust (by my family's standards, most of whom are pretty modestly off financially, no old money) Catholic New Englander thing going.
So that fact that he is from the South, Evangelical (?), and being slammed as being anti-intellectual/anti-education will be what gets her the most.
But the ace in the hole is that I've got the academic credentials thing locked up. So if I sit and explain to her how I, a scientist/academic type, can back Perry, she might listen.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 has obtained surveillance pictures of a State Police officer having sex with a woman on the hood of a car in broad daylight.
State Police aren't saying anything about the photos, but KOB Eyewitness News 4 is pressing for answers.
Two weeks ago KOB reported a story about an officer caught on camera having sex while in full uniform, an act shown on security camera at the Santa Fe Canyon Ranch.
KOB has blurred out the woman's image, but you can see it's during daylight hours and the officer is still wearing his utility belt.
We got reaction from people who saw the photos.
"It's an inappropriate use of time," said Cate Campbell of Albuquerque.
"Inappropriate use of our tax money, I mean we pay these guys," added Jacob Powers.

The article is little more than a 'rah rah' piece for the crack smoking lefties who are beginning to get nervous that the Boy King isn't looking all that hot these days.
AP is notorious for posting bull-crap polls to:
1. Tweak the Palinistas.
2. Tout Romney
3. Tweak 'believers'.
4. Tweak conservatives in general.
5. Drag the Paulbots out of the wood work.
6. Drive up the 'hit-count' at Hot Air.
This steaming pile of an article/poll falls more into the #6 category, with an additional hope that the usual lefty trolls that lurk at HA will come out and get into a poo-flinging match with the regulars who post comments there.
BTW, I cross-posted the earlier (MI) piece over there to mix things up a bit.
Besides, who in their right mind thinks Lichtman even remotely believes in the substance of what he wrote?
All things considered, this is a serious 'non-event'.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised you're wasting 'brain-bandwidth' even thinking about it.

He spends weekends playing golf so he doesn't see his daughters. He and Michelle are probably sleeping in separate suites by now. His MIL is probably confined to her quarters. His VJ wants to suck his dick, so he likes to have her around.

The extent of the damage to either car was not known.

They are wrong.
So far, Obama has dodged the bullet when it comes to:
A) major disasters. No Katrina or Ike, just Tropical Storm Irene. Will this last? Hurricane season is not even half over.
B) Foreign policy disasters. The usual motley crew of thugs will be tempted to push for what they can get from a weak indecisive president than wait for an unknown, and probably much less tractable successor. While Obama looked like a cinch for reelection, there was little incentive to make trouble -- why not get four years to push him around after reelection -- but now they are figuring they need to get what they can when they can get it.
C) Social unrest raised its ugly head this summer. Riots in UK and the Middle East, flash gangs and ugly incidents here in the US. Next summer could be far worse, especially with election season and political mischief makers on the left who might not be able to stop what they start.
Obama's is an extremely fragile administration. Even when everything goes right, he just barely keeps it on the rails, and the least unexpected crisis seems to result in chaos. This next year will be interesting, and not in a good way.

Kind of like enacting a personal mandate in Texas and supporting open borders and HillaryCare.
Except Romney governed liberal Mass voters with 85% Dem majorities in both houses. Perry is just a slick panderer, who made those liberal decisions in a conservative state. Perry is the biggest phony going.

They have no idea how badly Obama fucked up the economy because they've felt no pain. Right when Obama came into office and started ratcheting up the fear with his stimulus package, absolutely everyone went into a 'no hire' bunker mode that we've never came out of.
If you've been unemployed for over a year, like many here no doubt have, you'd crawl over broken glass to vote against him. Hell if union thugs realize that he's cooked and try to prevent people from voting by using some mob intimidation at polling places (totally possible in todays atmosphere), I'll buzzsaw my way through them. I'm well beyond the 'anger' phase now. If we don't win in '12 its over folks. Another 4 years of "uhh uhhh uhhh private jets errr uhhh for the rich errr uuhhh new jobs bill uhhh errr uhhh"
If the millions of unemployed don't get jobs soon, they may be unemployable forever unless we have a boom. We'll only have a boom under a Republican President.

And in 2008, those Dem majorities in the legislature got larger. Romney did nothing to try to help the Republican Party grow in Massachusetts.
In 2010, I spent 7 months volunteering for campaigns. Word on the street: Romney is not a team player.

Something that bugs me about the hardcore Mittbots - you guys are all so convinced that all things being equal, people will choose Romney.
But that's not the case. Because when it comes down to it, his record isn't impressive. Before you launch into the bullet points, let me remind you a chubby governor from Arkansas who pardoned a thousand people kicked his ass three years ago.
He ran an Olympics and Bain Capital. Who. Cares.
His term in Massachusetts sucked. He was impotent and latched on to RomneyCare so he could have an accomplishment.
Perry actually has won re-election. Before that he was Lieutenant Governor. His record is better. He's a more capable politician.
But you guys spend all your time trying to 'prove' that Candidate X is a flip flopper like Mitt, thinking that we'll all just finally fall to our knees and recognize Mitt's divinity.
It's not happening.

What I find interesting, it doesn't actually bug me, is how they have reacted to Perry. Before he entered they just felt like Romney was the inevitable candidate, sure most didn't care for him but as other dropped out their support would eventually default to Romney. So they never really went after other candidates and would mostly just defend Romney. Perry enters and they are on the ATTACK with him. I think they subconsciously know that Perry is a more appealing candidate for supporters to default to once their preferred one drops out and that definitely threatens Romney's standing.
