The suits you see people wearing are to prevent radioactive contamination from getting on people and thereby exposing them to radiation.

That helps. Right? No?

These suits are called anti-contamination clothing or anti-cÂ’s or PPE for short.

Contamination is composed of atoms (or isotopes) that are radioactive, which is to say that they naturally give off high energy particles and waves that are damaging to living tissues, when the particles decay to lower energy states (a disintegration). Think X-rays and stuff.

The problem with radioactivity is that it can be 1) highly localized, contained (preferably), and controlled, such as in a reactor, or it can be 2) dispersed as radioactive particles. In 1), there would be radiation (particles and waves) that, because they are contained, exposure can be minimized by minimizing exposure time, increasing distance from the source, and increasing shielding between you and the source.

For 2), you need to keep any radioactive particles from getting on you. Thus, for 2) you are doing the same (exposure minimization by minimizing time, increasing distance, and increasing shielding) but by keeping the particles off of your skin and minimizing the possibility of ingesting any. So by wearing these anti-cÂ’s you are basically providing yourself a second skin to shed and dispose of in the event that any contamination gets on you.

Note that if you were to get radioactive contamination on your skin, or if you were to ingest it, then you would continue to get irradiated by the contamination, wherever the contamination is located (skin, eyes, lungs, thyroid, etc.). Also note that there are different energy levels of particles and waves, different radioactive decay mechanisms for different radioactive isotopes, and different propensities to decay (expressed as half-lives).

Some decay by emitting waves or gamma radiation (the Hulk), and others emit high energy particles such as by neutron emission, alpha particles (helium without its electrons), or beta particles or electrons. The point is that each of the more prevalent contamination sources have different ways that they do damage to human tissue.

The one most commonly spoke about is Iodine-131, because it is a major uranium fission product (along with Cesium-137) (JP reactors were in part uranium fission, to my knowledge), notable for causing mutation and death in cells which it penetrates, and its has a propensity to concentrate in the thyroid due to the thyroids natural uptake of iodine. Thus, the rush of people in the U.S.A. trying to get iodide or iodate tablets, because they have this great fear of the unknown.

That said, the suits also provide some protection from radiation sources that do not have enough energy to penetrate the suits or those have a high propensity of being absorbed by the suits. So they do provide some level of radiation protection, almost as an aside. 

But to call them radiation suits, you are placing yourself amongst the likes of Sheppard Smith.

Don't be that guy/gal.

when the book comes out I hope to read that these men volunteered, willingly, no coercion.   It would be horrible to think they were chosen and forced.  Here if they were chosen or forced it would be the oldest ones who would be forced.  Since they revere their elders then perhaps the young ones were the ones in their culture to "volunteer" or if they were coerced then it would be the young ones still.   Wonder if the truth of this will ever come out?  Wonder what we will learn that will ultimately shock us to our shoes?

same here and in my friends diocese the bishop came and was transferred from one of the hotbeds of priests who were accused of molestation and then moved around by the bishop and not telling anyone in the new parish.  So, he came to the new area and immediately built himself a state of the art kitchen with the diocese's money and this was like the final straw for a lot of folks in the diocese.  So contributions have been down since the guy came but he's ballsy and doesn't seem to care, guess he figures he got away with something but God sees.  Most people have stopped giving to the development campaigns, and they keep changing the name but everyone knows what it is and doesn't give.  If they had faced it, and not angered the parishioners, then maybe people would be forgiving, understanding and generous but they keep running from it.

Thanks Shep.  I see you don't get it either.  The suits prevent you from ingesting it, getting it in your eyes, ears and nose, or having it embedded in your skin - the "it" being radioactive contamination.  The small dose of radiation that you get while it is on your suit is small compared to a lifetime (it or yours) of dose rate by having it on you or in you.  But, heh.  Go ahead and sound ignorant if the distinction isn't that important to you.

That's what makes them average.  I'm OK with this, but let's be clear that this is a choice to have other priorities.

It seems you continue to miss the point. I am not "rassl[ing] over the difference between coveralls, tyveks, full-face respirators, etc."  The incidental radiation protection afforded by these for beta and alpha particulate radiation sources is arguably no more effective than dead skin layer, long sleeves, safety glasses, etc.  And neither do anything to avoid biological damage caused by whole body radiation sources such as high energy gamma sources.  

The point of the PPE is to keep all of these radioactive contamination sources off your skin and out of your cake hole. You can throw on all the pretty pink polka dot PPE you want on and go work next to a 1000 Rem/hr. gamma source for an hour, and you will still have likely received a fatal dose.  Differences? Distinctions? Yes - very important ones.  Sorry, but it does take a little knowledge to be safe around radiation.

But then so do I miss the point (that it doesn't matter). I realize that people don't want to be distracted from their shiny things so that they remain blithely unaware of things that could have important impacts on their health.  Do you not care about these people?

How many days did Chicken Little Shep spread FUD about radiation leaks (also improper), meltdowns (also misleading), and the possibility of bad effects on the west coast (expected by informed people from day 1 to be remote)?  Then, only days later, and after having contributed to whipping up the populace into a frenzy over fears of "radiation leakage" reaching the west coast, Shep had the unmitigated gall to call the purchasers of iodide and iodate tablets in the subsequent run on them idiots and suggested they were overreacting. WTF?  Really, Shep? You think they were overreacting?

I will not begrudge you your desire to pretend that there are not meaningful differences, because you feel people just do not care.  But I'll disagree and remain firm that it is important to thwart the misunderstandings that are out there and the misinformation that is being spread about nuclear power and its hazards.  And we can part, respectfully.  

Belittle that if you must, but read the latest story on Wormme.com today ("'Radiation burns' implied on the radio").  He illustrates my points perfectly without any of our differences clouding the message.
