The Left's Continuing Unhinging Over 9/11
— Ace

Not only Krugman, writing about the "Years of Shame" post-9/11, but also the anti-conservative liberal the media loves to quote as a conservative, Kathleen Parker.

An America that no longer knows itself

The legacy of 9/11 canÂ’t be fully measured even now, but perhaps the most damaging aspect can be found in our national discourse.

Taking the long view, it is possible to see the roots of today’s political dysfunction — the hate, fear, anger and resentment — firmly planted in the soil at Ground Zero.

Did Osama bin Laden envision such a thing when he plotted the attacks? Probably not. He might have imagined that we would retaliate, and this would cost us lives and treasure. But he couldn’t have known that we eventually would lose our common sense of who we are. This has been the big surprise of 9/11 — an ongoing, self-perpetuating act of American self-destruction.

Something was unleashed 10 years ago that bears our scrutiny. It wasnÂ’t only evil, though the attacks were certainly that. The event was so cataclysmic and horrifying that it caused a sort of emotional breakdown in the American constitution. Simply put, it damaged our collective soul and seems to have released a free-ranging hysteria that has contaminated our interactions ever since.

No matter how many prayers uttered; no matter how many hands held or pledges made; no matter how many bombs dropped or coffins draped. A nation cannot heal itself without self-awareness. On this score we have fallen short. We seem not to want to recognize that we donÂ’t have a problem; we are the problem.

Putting it bluntly, Sept. 11 caused us to go temporarily insane. Being for or against the war, first in Afghanistan and later in Iraq, divided us as wars do, but this time was different. Friendships ended, marriages suffered, people crossed the street to avoid those with whom they disagreed. Ten years later, we are still at war. Tack on the global financial crisis, stagnant unemployment, the further dissolution of trust in our institutions, and we have all the ingredients for moral panic.

And now, alas, another election season is upon us with all the froth and spittle we love to loathe. President Obama understands that the nation has a psychological problem, but no president in his right mind can afford to speak publicly of such things. If Jimmy Carter was brought down by his “crisis of confidence,” a.k.a. “malaise,” speech, imagine if Obama, who already suffers an image of elitist condescension, mentioned that the nation could use a little time on the couch.

We stumble at last upon a purpose for columnists — to say that which no one else dares.

Note that Parker writes in her typical passive-aggressive way, and a superficial reading might suggest she's saying "a pox on all houses." But her previous history suggests to me she has a firm idea about which people went "temporarily insane," and which people remained steadfastly the voices of reason.

It's interesting, to me, that neither Parker nor Krugman feel the need to pretend they supported the War in Afghanistan any longer. This used to be a standard trope of the left, to feign support of one war to prove one's general credibility on the subject; they've now dropped that act, and no longer parse between Afghanistan and Iraq.

They don't quite confess the truth, but they no longer bother with the lies they once told. And, by the way, Miss Parker -- since you're casting about for some purpose for columnists that may make them seem more important than they are, confessing that truth that none on the left dare mention would more useful.

For a certain dominant strain of liberalism -- the liberalism of the bien pensant class -- the most attractive element of the creed is the self-deception. The self-deception I write of the moral vanity of supposing, by mere embrace of a political creed, that all "hate" and lizard-brain desire for vengeance has been purged from their minds.

Hatred has lived in the heart of men for 40,000 years. It is a natural response to the evils of the world. To say it is "natural" does not suggest it is good (despite the bien pensant's unexamined assumption of Rouseau's daffy conception of man as an untainted, virtuous angel absent the corrupting influence of society). But it is natural, in the sense of instinctual and innate.

To truly purge oneself of hatreds and a thirst for retribution would require the majority of a lifetime in philosophical self-denial and religious (or at least metaphysical) devotion and training. As a monk, whether a Western monk, giving his heart to god, or an Eastern monk, training himself to abnegate the self and its selfish passions in favor of a harmonic synthesis with the universe itself.

And yet, for the bien pensants, they seem to imagine they've accomplished this great feat simply by mouthing support of the Civil Rights Movement ("You know, if I were alive then, I'd've been a Freedom Rider") and by thrownng scorn and venom -- hate, in other words -- at those who show the temerity to disagree with them.

With all due respect: I'm absolutely certain this purging of hatred from one's heart is a much more difficult undertaking than the bien pensants imagine.

They profess to hate hate itself. That, for a start, indicates necessarily a more comfortable relationship with the emotion of hate than they generally acknowledge. But this is all for the purpose of constructing a have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too loophole, in which they can both hate hate, and yet may indulge, freely and without shame, in the emotion of hatred, so long as they can contrive a pretext for it.

And that pretext is always the same: Yes, they do hate. But those they hate are themselves hateful, so indulging in hatred is not a shameful act, nor a hypocritical one, but in fact a necessary and good campaign against hate.

But this is all, obviously to anyone standing outside this "because I said so" mock-philosophical loophole, just a bit of psychological transference. Those of us not smitten with this Only Hate Hate Itself dodge can admit we hate. We may not be proud of it, and may question ourselves when we give license to it, but we can in fact admit this ugly emotion lives in our hearts.

And we can admit then that we do in fact hate the murderers who killed 2,996 on 11 September 2001, and we hate their allies, and we hate those who dance in the street at the thoughts of men on fire plummeting a quarter mile through the air to their deaths.

But to the bien pensants, this won't due. This sort of hatred is base, and crude, and obvious; lower working class, is what they would really call it, if they had the supposed courage Kathleen Parker imagines they do in speaking uncomfortable truth. Not Quite Our Class, Dear, as the old saying goes, lacking in manners and savoir faire (knowing how to "do," and by "do," we mean comport oneself with the expected manners and opinions of the privileged class).

And what does a bien pensant in good standing about these these uncultured yobbos who feel no twinge of class-inculcated shame in hating mass-murderers?

Why, you hate them, of course. For what else can a good bien pensant, who has purged all hate from his heart by simple act of subscribing to Mother Jones, do when confronted with some benighted hatred, but to pour enlightened hatred on it?

We have never really been arguing about whether we should go to war, or whether we should hate. The only contention of these past 10 years has been whom we should go to war with, and whom we ought to hate.

The bien pensants are quite insistent that we must not hate some External Other who serves as a bogeyman exciting our darker passions.

Rather, they urge, we must direct these darker passions at an Internal Other, the vast majority of Americans who do not consider themselves a type of latter-day digital order of Jesuits.

Apparently we all have the right basic emotional take on things; some of us have just chosen the wrong bogeymen to fear and hate.

7 If Al Gore had won the presidency in 2000, would the world beÂ…?

And now this month's fantasy hypothetical question. Twenty-five percent of Americans think the world would be a better place if Al Gore had won the 2000 presidential election and 16 percent think it would be a worse place. Predictably, the former group had more Democrats and the latter more Republicans (surprise!). The majority of Americans (56 percent) led by Independents did not think that the world would be very different at all.

We don't "get rid of" people like Paulie Krugnuts and Kathleen Park-whore. Jesus Christ told us "the poor will always be with you", and to humbly paraphrase the Son of God, the vulgar 'bien pensant' journo class will also always be with us.

It's an easy gig if you have the right parents, credentials and the ability to mouth or write the correct platitudes and bromides of the day, at the appropriate time. Just ask Jonathan Chait, who elicited his reasons why "I hate George Bush".

The easy targets are out of the picture:  Emmanuel Goldman, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. So it's really "all you reactionary hateful rednecks" that are preventing Obama from being the Incredible President they think he should be, that are the objects of criticism.

Kathleen Park-whore or any random bien pensant  journo-list fellow traveler:

Why are you so mad that unemployment is so high, that your 401K plans are shrinking, that your home values are in the tank?  I don't understand this anger?!

This has been going on for as long as the Republic has existed. When I was a kid and Barry Goldwater was in the ascendancy within the Republican Party, CBS cooked up a TV hit piece made by Daniel Schorr called "The Thunder on the Right" to conflate every random nut-job they could find with Goldwater.

51 In her quoted writing Kathleen Parker eliminates the possibility that Osama Bin Laden knew or calculated that his attack would bring on "today's political dysfunction".  I think she is wrong.  I think he made it clear that he thought the west was weak specifically because the financial system was a house of cards (true) and that the body politic was very divided between left and right (that is good and evil to those who believe).  Ten years on it looks to me that Osama's thinking was closer to reality than Ms. Parker's.   The attack gave the left the opportunity to fake support for the subsequent wars but once the wars were engaged they with drew their support to leave the Republican president twisting in the wind while they made political hay.  This strategy worked so well that the left was able to take over the levers of power in both houses of congress and the presidency.  With this power they did what everyone (even Osama) knew they would do; pass some destructive piece of legislation to weaken the country.  We have become in ten years what Bin Laden termed "the weak horse" and now it will be very hard for us to show strength when the islamists attack our ally Israel which was their stated intention all along.

There are things that mark a nation's soul permanently. The scars fade but never really go away. 9/11 is one of them, and no "columnist" or "pundit" is going to change that fact. What happens will happen in spite of the Slugmans or Parkers of the world. The country will work its way through this tragedy just as they did after the Civil War and Pearl Harbor. And we will remember the dead and take them into our hearts just the same.

How does one become a pundit, anyway? Is there some minimum IQ requirement that has to be met? Do you need to prove you have an extra chromosome or extra toes?

Regarding the Soviets, it is worth repeating that the Left made a little boo-boo when it came to assessing how we should respond to the last ideology that sought the demise of the United States: They were wrong about the greatest global struggle of the 20th century, the Cold War.

If they had any dignity they'd shut up, lest drawn attention to their prior slip up.

80 In liberalism it's ok to hate your countrymen whom our your opponents in a peaceful political system, as being fundamentally evil people; But foreign groups who actually murder your countrymen by the thousands, directing hate at them is a sign of ignorance and intolerance. Because hating murderers is unenlightened; But hating those who espouse a philosophy at odds with yours; that's a sign of the very purity of your enlightenment. In this way they are not so subtly placing us beneath rapists and murderers, that we are so evil that we deserve hate while the willfully violent do not. Just remember that, if liberals ever supported the death penalty it is we whom they feel are the most deserving.

Hate?  No, I don't hate, but I have little tolerance for the left and their blame America strategy, and I have little tolerance for the Muslims that won't speak out against the Muslims who perpetrate these attrocities.  There are very few in this country who will speak out, and that silence speaks volumes.  Why?  Simply because of all the places in the world, the United States is the safest place to speak out against the terrorism perpetuated by Muslims.  I can understand Muslims in the West Bank, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, etc., not speaking out against terrorism.  I wish they would but they would be putting their lives at risk.  But here?  No one's life will be on the line.  And yet, crickets, for the most part.  That is the most disconcerting effect.  And then we do hear about Imam's speaking out, but they are speaking out in favor of the terrorists.  They are the ones leading their mosques and their followers, and the so-called "moderate" muslims seem to not even exist, except as dry ink in the New York Times, while simultaneously castigating people like me as terrorists tea party types.  So you tell me how we "bridge that gap".

94 So many examples come to mind when contemplating the twist that liberals have to put on their own behavior compared to their espoused morals. It's how Al Gore can consume as much carbon based power as any 200 knuckle dragging Bible belters, but it's OK because of the good works he thinks (or just says) he does.

Or the Manhattanites nibbling on endangered Russian sturgeon caviar while bragging about how they helped stop the water flow in CA's Central Valley to save a worthless bait fish.

Or the tax return of a certain US leader showing less than 1% charitable giving, while busy exhorting the government to give more tax dollars away for 'good causes'.

Or the campaign to give Africans mosquito nets to cower behind, instead of exterminating the malarial plague that kills more people than the US ever has in its entire history.

Ahh, to be a progressive liberal and live conscience free. Nah, I'll pass.

The moderate was drifting towards one side or the other....

the left won by getting the moderate to walk towards him and the moderate has now drifted to the right one....

that is what this is the left trying to shame the moderate into embracing their kabuki theatrics and walk towards them again....

The proper response is to restate your case and use the kabuki against your foe and tell the moderate, "if we need unity let him move to the middle".......

like I said I refuse to reward the left for their shite in the earlier phases of the war.

115 Is this just me?

I don't think of my life as strange. I'm screwed up, of course, but my days aren't. I probably watch about 75% less TV than the average person (not because I'm awesome, but because I was busy all the time when I was young, so I never caught the habit), but other than that, at any moment, I'm just a randomly selected dude, doing some normal thing. And here's what I saw this week, Monday through Saturday:

Number of "Remember 9/11"-type mass-cultural things: one. An episode of "I Survived..." I saw about half of by accident was about people who survived the WTC and Pentagon attacks. It was a rerun, I think, because it had Obama's "I got Bin Laden" podium announcement thingy very awkwardly pinned to the ass end of it, cutting off half the credits. Kinda ruined it, "politicization," etc. But, good stories, reminded me of some things, 9/11 among them.

Meanwhile... Number of people I know, saw on TV, or read announcing via mass email, or broadcasting on the 'tubes, that they're among the very select few who dare to say that which no one else dares and whip out a "This relentless blast of redneck kill-Ayrabs 'remembrance' from all media and all directions is making me crazy (or making me wish Gore was President so we wouldn't be at War-Slaves To Israel, or I wish more "red" people were killed, how 'bout today?—and especially Palin and her fucking dysgenic kids!, or it's reminding me how much admire Osama's amazing mental mastery over all the world even in death, or whatever)!": ...I can't count. I'd estimate...oh...a million billion.

The pre-reaction to today's— ...To today's what, by the way? There are some Prominent Citizen speeches, of course (it's an anniversary of a thing), and some crying people in the audience shots (because it was a bad thing), but aside from that, what? The occasional flag or sticker or shirt glimpsed in passing? (I haven't seen any.) Some memorial blog posts? A sad-looking dude somewhere, and you don't know why, but you know? A picture of a couple storm-drain runoffs passed off as a 'memorial'? —the pre-reaction to today's apparently not-at-all-world-consuming remembrance was crazy.

And today is the day everyone dares. It's fuckin' Dare Day. That's what it is. Really, deep-down, everywhere is.

Boned.

144 If Jimmy Carter was brought down by his “crisis of confidence,” a.k.a. “malaise,” speech, imagine if Obama, who already suffers an image of elitist condescension, mentioned that the nation could use a little time on the couch.

We stumble at last upon a purpose for columnists — to say that which no one else dares.

I imagine Mz Parker,  that people that belong on the couch are those dreadful war mongers that retaliated against the evil? That the rage directed at Bush for being one of the dreadful People  that responded against the other was a Moral failing? that He had a huge  % of our country's Hicks and others INCLUDING those kindly back stabbing DEMS behind him? 155 I'm pretty sick and tired of the navel gazers trying to understand why Bin Laden attacked us.
Perhaps someone here, who can do the Tiny Url thing can post the link to Bin Laden's letter to America.
Just google/Bing "Bin Laden letter to America" and read the results in his own words.
As far as I know, there has never been any credible proof that the letter was not from Bin Laden, but if someone knows otherwise, please say so.

Reading his explanation, it is very evident that there is nothing that America, in it's current form can do to appease him.

I often said, it is eerily similar to the scene in the Will Smith movie, Independance Day where the President is confronted by the alien, and attempts to find a common ground for peace between the aliens and the human race.

The President is desperately searching for and answer, and asks the alien what they want from us. And the aliens simple reply was "We want you to die"

Fighter jets were launched to escort a flight from Los Angeles to John F. Kennedy airport after passengers refused to come out of an airplane bathroom.

New York City has been under heightened alert since intelligence was picked up overseas indicating a possible plot to coincide with the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

According to a security official, the three passengers on American Airlines Flight 34 went into a bathroom and were “not compliant.”

The official says the passengers are now back in their seats.

The flight is set to arrive at JFK at 4:25 p.m.

The Chileans overthrew Allende on their own, after their Parliament and Supreme Court demanded he stop violating the Chilean Constitution.  In doing so, they prevented tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of deaths that would have occurred if he had been able to secure power for himself as dictator and establish a communist regime.  This doesn't excuse the human rights violations of the Pinochet regime after the coup, but it was useful idiots like yourself who gave Allende sufficient power that he couldn't be removed by peaceful means.

In my mind, the Democrats in the government, the media, and academia pretending to love America more than their party for a few days is not "coming together": it was merely a temporary disguise they had to assume for their continued security and popularity.

230 Regarding Chile 9/11 1973, our cowardly CIA overthrow of Allende resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of college students, labor leaders, idealists ... more deaths than 3,000 Americans 9/11 2001.  Do the math.

And yet....today Chile is a vibrant democracy with the highest per capita GDP in South America.

The problem with your "logic" about U.S trespasses is that your definition of "trespass" would subject whole countries and religions to oppression--I remember the Cold War and the empty values of your kind.  Let's talk about Salvador Allende, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, and Che Guevara being in your pantheon of supposed heroes.  Carter's fecklessness resulted in Iran being subsumed under the yoke of people who would make the Shah blush were he still alive.  People like you are as predictable as the sunrise--so is your cowardly moral relativism.

--because the acid-dropping, tree-hugging, crybaby dope-dreamers have taken control of our government and f*cked it all up.

Let's start drug-testing in DC.  I wonder how many of them show positive for heroin?

With all due respect: I'm absolutely certain this purging of hatred from one's heart is a much more difficult undertaking than the bien pensants imagine.

************

I think you're right.  Just take a look at the behavior of lefty New Age guru Deepak Chopra.  He sells millions of books telling people that they must be "non judgmental" because they can never know what is in another person's heart.  Then he goes on t.v. (and writes columns for print media) and suggests that former AK Governor Sarah Palin is, among other things, cowardly, materialistic, dumb, a nativist bigot, etc.

So apparently in Leftyland, it is terribly wrong to hate (and to judge) others . . . unless those others have a different political philosophy from your own, in which case it's perfectly acceptable, and maybe even mandatory, to loathe them (but only because it's for their own good, or something).

<i>we have no right to impose our way on Chileans, Guatemalans, Iraqis, etc</i>

Nor do those who would impose Socialism, even if they have 50.1% popular support, have the right to impose socialism on the sizable portion of their population that is unwilling. No right whatsoever. Popular call of a majority is not justification for removing rights of a minority. The ever overused "well if they want to try it why should we" totally forgets the fact that only some of the people, and perhaps only a vocal and insistent minority, may want to try socialism.

Do not stand back with your lazzis faire attitude and stand in moral judgement that inaction due to lack of moral authority to act is somehow a virtue when faced with another lacking a moral authority to act, moving to enslave the unwilling.

The world is more complicated then black and white. And we will never know what would have happened had we not acted. But to claim it was somehow morally superior to allow a country to fall to hard socialism, when we know how that has ended in every case, is to not even grapple with the real tough questions of morality. And is an indicator that someone is not ready to participate meaningfully in world politics.

Posted by: robtr at September 11, 2011 04:01 PM (MtwBb)

This.

Kathleen Parker is an insecure, menopausal mess who became unglued when her fairly new 3rd or 4th husband liked Sarah Palin's legs. She has not been the same since. I used to like her before she became the unhinged liberal sycophant trolling for readers. Her columns, prior to her crazy train, were milquetoast but readable little ditties on raising children, family values, etc. Rarely original or complex thinking, but I read her for years over my coffee.

She attempts to appeal to the masses for readership numbers, but managed to get kicked out of conservative Townhall after her Palin rabid hissy fits. CNRO rarely links her drivel except on weekends when her sweet friend, Kathryn Jean Lopez, links her. Jonah Goldberg washed his hands of her when she went with Client 9 and wondered how quickly that show would be off the air. After her Palin unhingement she also was one beat behind the news or any type of original thought, sort of like Mitt Romney, testing wind direction. She won the Pulitzer with the cost of her conservative readers. Her complete downfall was her show with Spitzer, where she publically showed the country how low she would limbo for attention.

I will be happy whenever the MSM finally considers her one of them. She is no conservative, that is for sure. She is a fake conservative at best, who changes her color as fast as a chameleon with each face lift.

Parker, Krugman, et. al. are responsible for all the mindless American hand-wringing and islamophobia pc about what is otherwise perfectly justified...outright hatred of those who wish us wiped off the face of this earth.

Intense longterm fear of anything or anyone will ultimately lead to hate for same thing/one if allowed to be expressed appropriately.  If fear and hate are not recognised, expressed, and managed externally and appropriately both emotions will be turned inwardly towards self or outwardly to an inappropriate target.  The purpose of terror is to strike fear in people.  Consequently, the corresponding hate for and targeting of terrorists and their actions is completely justified, especially in a self preservation sense.  What Krugman and Parker express, encourage, and justify is the inappropriate repression or expression of terrorist fear/hate that has lead to naive dismissal, ambivalence, and destructive self blame, both individually and collectively.

266 Ace, you nailed it. NAILED it. There is evil in the world, and that is natural. But it is not good. I've long said that where "liberals" go wrong is that they layer abstraction upon abstraction, eventually reaching a seemingly logically sound worldview that could only be true if nothing was lost in an abstraction -- not to mention abstractions of abstractions. They fancy themselves smarter than your average NASCAR fan because of their ability to do this without blinking, and they get to a place where it is perfectly logical that you can spend yourself out of debt, and only an idiot, beer-drinkin, gun-totin', Jesus Lovin' imbecile can't see that. In fact, America DOES have a psychosis, and it is personified in just these people who "hate hate" itself and "only hate the haters". They are people that believe that true righteousness is found espousing hatred for the American Way, and by the way, "Real Americans" are the ones who hate it. It's absolutely zazbots insane. And it needs to be cured. It's going to have to be a big social project on our part. Kind of a counter-psychosis. And we're not particularly good at it. They're much better practiced and entrenched in today's American institutions. Paul is usually on my no-click list. But kind of like watching a train wreck, the pompous headline sucked me in to see what depths to which he had found it possible to sink.

Posted by: philmon at September 11, 2011 05:23 PM (omF6C)

267 Kathleen: President Obama understands that the nation has a psychological problem, but no president in his right mind can afford to speak publicly of such things. You know what? So did the terrorists. Kathleen is wrong to think that Bin Laden wasn't aware of this gaping, sucking red wound in America's side. He talked about it. He and his allies have done everything possible to rub salt into it and get it to fester. He knew of the navel-gazing class. It's not that introspection isn't healthy, but introspection with the goal of "looking" introspective to stroke one's own ego is not how it's done. But that's how the Krugman Klass does it. And President Obama is very aware of it, too. It does not mean that he wishes to aid its healing. Dude is living in an anti-19th Century Imperialist world, and he's determined to extract atonement for it wherever he can.

And then take Happiness and spread it all around
WeÂ’ll put an end to Grief, we can hardly wait
WeÂ’re gonna stamp! Out! Hate!

Shoot it in the stomach, yelling Die! Die! Die!
WeÂ’ll pull its insides out, and look at what it ate
WeÂ’re gonna stamp! Out! Hate!

WeÂ’re gonna stamp out Hate, lash it with a switch!
Amputate its arms and legs and see how long they twitch!
We’ll put its toes on hooks and dangle ‘em for bait!
WeÂ’re gonna stamp! Out! Hate!

WeÂ’re gonna stamp out Hate, show it whoÂ’s the boss
Take it up a lonely hill and nail it to a cross
WonÂ’t it be kicks to watch the blood coagulate?
WeÂ’re gonna stamp! Out! Hate!

WeÂ’re gonna stamp out Hate. Poke it with a pick.
Chill it til itÂ’s solid, then weÂ’ll sell it on a stick.
WeÂ’re gonna stamp out Hate. Kill without a trace.
Stick a finger up its nose and pull it off its face!

WeÂ’re gonna stamp out Hate. Lynch him with a rope.
Find a Nazi doctor who can boil him down for soap.
WeÂ’ll pull his teeth right out and sell the silver plate . . . . .
