— Ace Good piece at NRO, rubbishing liberals' claims about Texas' unemployment situation and poverty rate.
You probably know that while Obama benefits, statistically, from discouraged workers -- workers who have simply left the work force entirely, due to the futility of finding work, and hence are not included in the unempoloyment rate -- Texas' unemployment rate is distorted by the large number of encouraged workers entering the state to find work.
But here's something worth mentioning about the claims about Texas' supposedly-high poverty rate:
Plumer: “The state boasts the highest percentage of minimum-wage workers in the country . . . .”Meyerson: “It has the fourth-highest poverty rate of any state. . . .”
Unfortunately, neither of these writers really understands what these numbers mean. The biggest problem with both claims is that Texas has the second largest percentage of under-18-year-olds in the country. Children between ages 0 and 17 donÂ’t make much income, if any, but they nonetheless are factored into per capita income calculations. In order usefully to compare what people are making across the states, a better approach is to compare GDP per adult. In 2008 Texas ranked 14th, which is not too shabby. Even more important, from the day Perry became governor in 2000, until 2010, Texas ranked 10th in terms of real GDP growth per adult. By contrast, California ranked 24th.
Krugman and his cronies may not realize it, but TexasÂ’s very young population also dramatically raises the rate of people in the population earning the minimum wage. Given that single women with kids make up such a large portion of those in poverty, it isnÂ’t surprising that the high birth rate also drives up the poverty rate.
On the other hand, Daniel Foster looks at claims that Perry is practicing "crony capitalism" and, alas, cannot entirely rebut them.
I'm bothered by his point five:
5. Perry is not (yet) Rod Blagojevich. Conspicuously missing from the Perry stories is any suggestion that Perry himself has done anything unlawful. “If this were a real charge,” as Sullivan puts it, “Mr. Democratic Strategist Who Hates Rick Perry would take his case to the FBI and not the Washington Post.”
Well that's not very encouraging.
I don't see anything there, though. Texas, like any state government, awards licenses and contracts; yes, many of these go to rich businessmen who donate to Rick Perry, but... I imagine the list of rich Texas businessmen who don't donate to Rick Perry is rather short.
This looks sinister if you proceed from the assumption that every contract or license must be a quid pro quo. But these are routine grants. And political donations are themselves routine.

The measurement of "Poverty" in the United States is a joke anyways.
When someone who is officially below the poverty line has multiple tvs, a car, a house, etc, then the poverty line is meaningless.
It is an insult to those who actually do live in abject poverty around the world.

Rick Perry receives large donations from large companies. His economic policies include incentives to large companies (also mid-sized companies, but they get much less press for some reason) to come to Texas. Therefore, in the minds of liberals, Rick Perry must be a crony capitalist.
Except: He's never been charged with an ethics violation.
Except: His books are all above-board, and they've been combed through by Bill White (who has deep connections to the Clintons, so we can be sure that was a very fine-toothed comb).
Except: He is conscientiously and conspicuously fastidious when it comes to "awarding" things to companies that have donated to him. People mention Merck with the HPV vaccine, but no one else makes one. The deal for the "foreign company" he'd brokered for TTC was objectively the best one offered- it just also happened to come from a foreign company.
Before you get all weak-in-the-knees, Ace, look for actual evidence of wrong-doing. Let me assure you, if there were any, someone would make a Federal case out of it as fast as they possibly could.
And Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure.

Posted by: dan-O at August 23, 2011 09:26 AM (BAjNF)
This is a problem with unemployment statistics in general.
During the boom Bush years, the 4.5% unemployment rate was actually lower, as the economy pulled in marginal workers that in an only average year would not be working or working full time.
Of course in the Obamconomy we see people who are highly qualified for positions unable to find them thanks to his job killing policies.
It is amazing that in a few short years qualified candidates have gone from businesses chasing them to having to hunt to find a job they are over qualified for...

The media / Democrats are barking up the wrong tree. There's no real audience for this nonsense about Texas' economy.
If you're a rational and informed adult you'll be voting against Obama next year. Doesn't matter what's happening or not happening in Texas. On the other hand, if you're dumb enough to be duped into thinking Texas doesn't have an excellent local economy, relative to the country at large, you're already "priced in" as an automatic vote for Obama, or you're too stupid to vote in the first instance.
Those in the middle neither are naive nor feckless enough to be worried about what's going on in Texas; they're worried about putting food on their own tables and paying for their own kids' educations.
This smacks to me of early desperation on the part of the media / Democrats. The only plausible conclusion is that the internal polling is looking very grim for their man.
Ergo look for the vicious personal attacks on Romney and especially on Perry to begin in earnest over the next several weeks. I don't think the media / Democrats can wait until next fall. It's going to get extremely ugly, quite soon.

No he isn't. He is representative of a decent chunk of the Republican party. People who want big government but simply want to rule it from the right rather than the left. Think of the Tories in England. There isn't really a lick of difference between them and Labor except that they want to spend money they don't have on different favored programs.

Mitt RomneyCare?
Michelle "I get pork, too" Bachman?
I know, Ron "I've made anti-Semitic Remarks" Paul.
Oh, wait, no! Sarah "I quit my job and decided to make millions" Palin.
I would expound further, I but I believe that would be too much for your brain, which bears closest resemblance to that of a retarded sponge-fungus on a week long bender. I dare not consider your parentage or self-awareness.

Texas' success is real, nothing mythical about that, but it has nothing to do with Perry. Perry is corrupt as the day is long. He is owned by special interests. He will do or say anything. Just look at his record.
His baby was the Trans-Texas corridor. He wanted to imminent domain over a million acres of private property to build a massive toll-road that TX taypayers would fund, but then would be handed over to a Spanish contractor to build and then operate/maintain after the fact. Every study showed the highway would do nothing but hurt our economy. We didn't need the road, it would hurt small downs, forcing people to drive for miles to find bridges to get across this 1/4-mile wide beheamouth toll road. It would provide high-speed transport connecting Mexico to the northern states, driving business we currently get to them. Nobody was in favor of this highway. Perry refused to put it to a popular vote.
Perry has continuously vetoed legislation that would have deregulated healthcare in TX and allowed for more competition. Right now the way our system is designed, doctors band together in regional lobbys and have absolute control over local healthcare markets. You can think of it like a union, but encompasing an entire geographic region. What is a patient going to do, drive to a different hospital or doctor a hundreds of miles away? It's not a free market economy. These doctor lobbys seek to maintain provider shortages so as to raise demand and income for themselves. They will not allow competition. They also push the burden of government-imposed losses onto private providers like hospitals. State and federal government requires by law that hospitals provide certain services but then when patients don't pay they do no reimburse for these losses. End result, hospitals raise prices on everybody else. The healthcare system is very corrupt. Repeated legislation has gone to his desk that would greatly serve to ease these problems by making the market more free and competitive, busting up the power of these doctor lobbys. Perry always vetos.
Yet on the other hand Perry rammed through legislation requiring sonograms before an abortion. A nice feel-good measure, but this actually increases healthcare costs! Not by a lot, but nonetheless.
Perry has handed out countless billions to his contributors in the form of state contracts, many of them for jobs that weren't necessary to begin with. He has helped big companies maintain unfair competitive edges over new smaller companies.
Perry might do a few things right. Certainly better than Obama, but we can and should do a lot better.

Funny you should mention that. Yesterday (?) some folks here were discussing odd parental behaviors, such as not telling their kids about major medical problems etc.
Anyway, my dad (who is in his late 70s) - for some reason that completely escapes me - will not give me his cell phone number. He has a cell phone for emergencies, but I am not to know the number. I guess he thinks I'd call it all the time and use up his minutes or something. It's truly bizarre.

@230,
Did you just call me an idiot? Perhaps you can point out a specific thing I said that is false. Perry's record speaks for itself, for those who care to do more than simply take Perry at his word, which consistently changes with polling data.
