— CAC Our resident trolls like regg or eggr or whatever he calls himself when pretending to be wise and conservative jumped on the "Obama is now unstoppable" bandwagon.
So lets take a look at the ENORMOUS binLadenisnowwormfood bounce:
Per RealClearPolitics.com, the latest Presidential Job Approval results:
[Chart moved below the fold]
That far, far right end of the chart shows the results including the post-bindeaden polls- CNN's poll of adults putting Obama at 52/43 approve,
Newsweek's putting him at 48/49 disapprove, and the Washington Post's laughable 600-adult poll of 56/38 approve.
Obama has received an average bounce- including the WaPo moonland poll, of about 6.6.
Yep, 6.6. Mind you there is time for more rescue polls, but the driving concerns for Americans aren't in Afghanistan/Pakistan right now. They haven't been there in nearly a decade.
President Obama in fact received a larger bounce at the end of last year thanks to the tax cut extension agreement with Republicans than he has so far killing bin Laden.
But hey, never let facts get in the way of a poor narrative, the trolls will argue that quite well I am sure below (much like their predictions of no wave last year, no loss in Massachussetts last January, or Prosser being destroyed in Wisconsin). Teflon Presidency right now, baby.

I expect he'll get about a week's worth of slightly higher approval, but that's it. Killing Bin Laden a decade after 9/11 isn't very important to people.

Around the same time in his term, Bush 41 conclusively won Desert Storm and had an approval rating in the 90s, which was the highest in the history of Presidential approval ratings at that time.
A bunch of solid Dem challengers refused to run against him as a result, meaning that only Clinton, Jerry Brown, and a few others were in the right place when Bush's approval rating tanked due to economic problems and a bunch of people being pissed at Bush for letting the Dems raise taxes.
Obama may have the media on his side, but he's got crappy instincts and his economic policies are hurting the country. He's going to do something so stupid between now and 2012 that people will forget all about him being lucky enough to be the guy in the White House when the SEAL Team got Bin Laden.

bin Ladin hadn't succeeded in doing much in the past 10 years - to the point where some people started to theorize that he was dead!
Nobody's going to be talking about this in a week, and nobody's going to care 18 months from now. It was already a long-overdue relic from the past.

God. I just laughed myself to tears reading Frank J's "Shot in Islamic Traditioin" article from the sidebar.
Best quote : ". And if youÂ’ve ever owned a cat, you know theyÂ’re mischievous little creatures. ThatÂ’s part of their charm. Anyway, the cat ate one of his eyeballs. So, not great there on respecting the body according to Islamic tradition, but accidents happen."

George H.W. Bush's bounce from the first Gulf War is also an interesting comparison, as it didn't last long enough to see him re-elected in a tough economic environment.
The case against President Obama's re-election has centered almost entirely on the economy, with no major narrative around Obama's foreign relations policies. His foreign policy trustworthiness will increase in polls, but it most likely won't be the key issue that swings undecideds.
Americans are overjoyed that bin Laden is rotting in Hell. But after the euphoria washes away, they will still be living in the Great Recession and worried about what the federal government's debt will due to our future and fiscal solvency.
But today that doesn't matter. Today we
rejoice that Osama bin Laden is dead and remember those that have lost
their lives and loved ones' lives in the Long War against Terror.
Good chart on post-event Presidential bounces through the years.

I really wouldn't follow anything but the Rasmussen and Gallup polls. These two use a three day rolling average, so we should see what it looks like on Thursday. I don't think it will be all that much.
Republicans need to hammer Obama on the economy again and again. Screw the 'under 8% unemployment and he wins'. Instead, ask why this is the worst employment recovery after a recession since WWII and define success as 5-6% unemployment, where it should be.
Don't let Obama lull the nation into accepting the same type of ridiculously low expectations that have been set for him.

The main difference between GHWB and Obama though is that GHWB started with a good economy and the unemployment rate went up about 2 points in his final two years and 1 point in the last year.
Obama is where he is with near 9% unemployment. Unemployment will probably fall a touch (at least) before the election. We have to be out there defining success as full employment (5-6% unemployment) and saying that Republican policies can get us there, not assuming the narrative will come to us.
There is no reason why he should be near 50% right now. We need someone to go 'Trump' on Obama with the economy.

Yeah. I was on here last week asking if anyone else had experienced sticker shock at the register.
I haven't had to price-shop in years, although if I see a sale, I might capitalize on it. However, that whole buy-what-I-want mentality has to change. I've now nearly fallen over at the register three times, the latest being tonight.
Supposedly, grocery costs have gone up 5%, but that is a very basic basket. I am single and my daughter is out of the house so I tend to buy what I want, including boutique-type items every now and then.
This is what I purchased tonight. What would you imagine it would cost?
2 boxes of K-cups for the Keurig (12 cups ea.)
Dubliner cheese (my favorite)
Oscar Meyer ham (small package)
Osca Meyer turkey (small package)
Philly salmon cream cheese
Ray's bagels
Ezekial bread
blue bell ice cream bars
a carrot cake bar from the deli
a gallon of sweet tea from the deli
hot wings from the deli
$70!!
Essentially 3 bags of food for $70. The wings were $9. They were about $6 pretty recently. The cheese was about $1 less a month or so ago.
Shit! I guess I'll be back to Ragu and noodles before long.

Republicans need to quit worrying about the Bin Laden effect. Terrorism fears have long since been supplanted by economic anxieties for most Americans. With the dollar on life support and the cost of oil and basic goods skyrocketing, any bounce President Obama experiences will be temporary.

Slight conundrum for the proggos;
If Bin Laden doesn't represent true Islam, why did we give his body an Islamic burial? If his act of terrorism violated Islamic Law, then he committed a horrible crime, even by Muslim standards -- and no prayer to Allah will save him.
If Bin Laden represents mainstream Islam, then Islam is an enemy to the rest of the civilized world. So why would we ask this hostile god, Allah to be merciful to this murderer of 3,000 of our fellow citizens?

BJs: Peanut Butter, OJ, Trashbags, big vinegar, big olive oil, Carrots, Spinach, big thing of hummus, big pack of chicken, pack of fruit cups, splurg items (Marinated MozzBalls and a big can of nuts) 99 bucks
Giant: Bananas, Cauliflower, Cukes, red onion, avocado, Asp, slaw kit, deli ham, deli cheese, deli turkey, bagels, milk, eggs, kids drink boxes and snacks for lunches, chicken broth, kids shampoo, kids bandaids, kid claritin, big pack of beef eye round, ground pork, pack of Lebanon bologna, 12p of small water bottles (for the car), sliced bread - 99 bucks; the only name brand item in there is the Claritin and drink boxes.
(I'm not insane - i just happen to have the receipts in front of me to put into QBooks tonight.) So that's 200 bucks plus another 5 bucks for bakery bread, another 15 at the farmers market, and maybe 15 bucks at Trader Joes for some frozen stuff if we get there this week.
My "market basket" average is up 13% over last year - per QBooks. Gas with the same cars, same commutes - up 22%. Insurances bumped up 7%. Utilities etc flat, Tuition up 5%, (Daycare down 50%, Clothing down 15% - another kid in Catholic school
Whats the CPI?

Ras has always tended to lean toward the GOP, but in the end have the closest result at the end, because so many other polls tend to over sample Dems, or poll Adults.
I think he felt stung by the last election when a lot of elections tended further to the Dems than he expected (e.g. Nevada), and he is now compensating. But if he is doing that, it is a mistake. One of the reasons he was accurate is he was the only pollster that was catching the effect of the GOP GOTV efforts. When the RNC failed to use the 72 hour plan this last election, that blew Rasmussen's results.
This means that Rasmussen will be accurately reflecting the GOP, only if they are not using the GOTV strategy.

Between the beginning of 2010 and say, Feb. this year, Ogabe's floor in approval("Would you use the soap if the President exited the bathroom as you walked in?") ran about 43%.
Once the WalMart constituency discovered they had no money at the end of the month, stayed home and ate Ramen Noodles, his approval floor is more like 39%.
Remember Nov. 2008, it was like 61% yet just 52% voted for the Manchurian. The Dimmis may not find Hoffa's dumpster by Nov. 2012 but this guy is going to be a neutron bomb to their turnout.

Third, gas and inflation aint going anywhere but up!
Fourth, eveyone pretty much knows the pos in the whitehouse didnt have the balls to actually do anything but step out of the way finally and let the military do its job...thats why there is no significant bounce. He can say I all he wants, we all know he is a metropussy.

The killing occurred during Obama's watch. Big deal! Giving him credit for it is like giving Truman credit for VE Day after Churchill, FDR, Stalin, and their troops had done all the dirty work against Hitler.
If BO deserves credit for this kill, then Andrew Johnson deserves credit for saving the Union and destroying slavery. The day Lincoln died, General Johnston's Confederate Army of Tennessee was still in the field, as were General Kirby Smith's Trans-Missssippi forces. Pitched battles continued through July 1865, and the 13th Amendment wasn't passed until Reconstruction, during JOHNSON's presidency.
