The Single Best Barometer for 2012
— CAC

Bellwether, schmellwether.
There is one consistant pattern that has lasted since both parties existed and nominated candidates for President.
In the event of a party flip of the White House, the winner carries at least one state their party's previous White House flipper failed to snag.

Bush carried states against Al Gore that Reagan didn't against Carter (West Virgina and Georgia).
Obama carried states against McCain that Clinton failed to flip in 1992 (Virginia and Indiana).
Jimmy Carter carried states against Ford that JFK lost to Nixon despite Kennedy's best efforts with the zombie vote (Ohio, arguably the most critical in the '76 election).

If the Republican wins at least one state Bush did not carry in 2000, we are not guaranteed to win the election, but if we fail to capture a Gore state we are guaranteed a loss. This is the one consistant election barometer and I am stunned nobody thought of and published this before. So memorize the states below, and watch them going into the new year. We lead comfortably in a few, buy pudding. If we trail in every single one, do what you morons have done for the last few years, only double it and with more teeth-gnashing.

52 Well if you look at CAC's map, it is not a sure thing that we lose if we don't flip a Gore blue state.  Just look at the unshaded areas.  All we have to do is carry all of those.  And that is actually fairly likely.  Although I doubt we will carry both NV and CO, but all we would need to do is spot SCOAMF just one of them.

68 Look guys, I know some here don't want to believe this but today was somewhat of a watershed event in that it appears possible the the UE rate going into next November might very well be in the mid/low 7's. If that happens and assuming everything remains as it is today, then not only does Obama win but he wins big. Maybe not as big as 2008 but a W is still a W as far as he's concerned at this point. I know that the UE rate calculation is BS (it really is) but it won't matter to many out there that are on the fence right now re: Obama and his performance thus far. I'm quite confident that there are a great many that could be persuaded to vote for him again if they're convinced that things are now moving in the right direction. It's BS of course but that's how the gray matter (what little there is) between the ears of most "independents" work. I don't like the fact that Obama's chances for a second term just shot up but it is what it is. I need another drink....thank God for Rum.

In case anyone thinks I am trying to push Romney using double-secret-reverse psychology:

Cain, Perry, Santorum, Paul, Gingrich, and Romney all polled with a lead or M.O.E in at least one of these states this year- the most frequent for reddening was Pennsylvania, but Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Maine, Connecticut and Minnesota all had at least one nasty poll for Obama (and great press for a GOP candidate).

I’ve stated before that I think vote fraud should be punished in the harshest way possible because it strikes at the very core of what being a free citizen means. That having been said I offer the theory that the Left knows that elections are messy and unpredicatble things and deep down they know that they will never honestly convince 51% of the people to support their insane policies – hence the need for media manipulation and vote fraud. My theory is that California is the Left’s experimental laboratory. Most crazy ideas start there and then eventually migrate to the rest of the country. I think the November 2010 election was one of their experiments. While the Republicans swept to victory in a historic fashion through the other 49 states, California mysteriously and magically did the exact opposite. Was it truly that Californian’s are a different breed? Perhaps. But equally or even more likely is that the election was decided long before any votes were cast through a combination of shoddy and fraudulent registration, through, who knows how many, fraudulent absentee ballots, to voting without having to show ID – all overseen by a Democrat controlled government infrastructure which would have no interest whatsoever in performing its job with any integrity and with its only goal being to win. Hard and maybe impossible to prove but it strikes me as uncanny that California’s election results were so out of step with the rest of the country – unless you believe that manipulation was used. And if California is in fact a huge laboratory for the Left, then look for the same to be coming to a state near you – in the very near future. Like 2012.

117 That 269-269 map, btw, is not a prediction - it's just my usual pessimism and lack of faith in damn yankees on election day, regardless of the nominee (but especially if the nominee has a Texas accent, to which I am most favorably inclined).

Posted by: chemjeff at December 02, 2011 07:50 PM (s7mIC)

You're not taking into account what goes along with that, stability. Iowa sits with a unemployment rate around 5% to 6%. Not bad and it's because of the stability of ethanol and the food markets. Iowans won't be begging for change especially if the GOP candidate threatens to throw a wrench into what keeps them so stable. People will vote for there own self interests, a Republican President won't be in most of Iowan's interests.

Dammit to hell I am sick and tired of these RINOs continuing to confuse me with nonsense about states, voting, electrical votes or whatever, and historical voting and electrocution patterns.

The only issue that matters in an election, geeks, is that of purging the GOP of Mexican loving RINOs.  Winning a general election is for losers and chumps.  Losing a general election with a pure and true conservative is for winners and heroes, like me.  The objective is to have the liberal Democrat in office and then to have an ideologically pure Republican opposition who blocks the liberal Democrat from doing stuff.  That prevents us from losing slower, which is what we get when Republicans are in office.  Like with Reagan.  Like with Bushleague.

When the framers wrote the declaration of constitution the whole point was that "winning" elections didn't matter and that "compromising" with others was evil and against nature.

You can smoke all this crap about, hey, look Mr. Irrational, this state does X and that state does Y, and if we do this we get Z, and then I'll say step off RINOs and blow it out of your arses.

I'd rather the nation perish than to have a vaccine pimp RINO as the nominee.  Along similar lines I was happy when I went totally brain dead, as it saved me from making tough decisions.

Bullseye. Consider California, where millions voted for Prop. 8 defining marriage as between a man and a woman (what a concept!). Then a judge said, nope, we got it wrong. And it turns out he's a shirtlifter himself, and so not exactly a disinterested party. Why the fuck did we bother voting? We should've just asked Judge Fruit what he thought.

The people there are conservative/libertarian for the most part. Because of casino work their liberal thorn are the unions. That is the real reason Reid keeps getting re-elected but in this political climate I don't even see that keeping Dems strong there. I say Nevada will flip for Romney for sure and maybe even Newt. The chore for us will be to handle the voter fraud and th BTW Mormons do not consider either Huntsman or Reid to be 'real' Mormans but they put up with them because they wield political clout. They do consider Romney the real thing and the Mormon vote is big in Nevada.

161 LGoPs,  one of the things we MUST do is convince voters that being informed is neither boring nor pointless.  Ppeople should be ASHAMED not to know who their senators are, or who the vice-president is.  They should have a basic understanding of where government checks come from (and it is NOT "Obama's stash").

My theory on how to do this involves shaming people for their ignorance and making it "uncool" to not know these things.  If Bono knows stuff like this,  there is no reason why the average  suburban teen shouldn't.

Besides,  politics,  when truly followed,  is like a combination of soap operas, warfare, video games, and sports.  What's not to like?

I agree Miss Marple but the frustration I run into mostly is that the people I'm surrounded by - reasonably well educated engineers and technicians, professionals all - think that they're informed but in reality are brainwashed beyond repair. They are extremely skeptical and critical of any of the 'conservative' ideas I bring up - which means they have the ability to be critical and skeptical. Unfortunately, it is 100% leftist skepticism. I try to appeal to them by saying 'that's good that you're skeptical of me. Now just try applying some of that same skepticism to what you hear from NPR or MSNBC'. All to no avail. They are truly hopeless and a lost cause. Our options are rapidly being reduced to surrendering or fighting. The Left has killed civil discourse and any chance of persuasion.

LGoPs, try this. Don't argue about policies - they're a matter of opinion - but plant the seed in their minds that the media are hopelessly biased. Point out that they hid evidence of John Edwards' bullshit, when they knew damned well he was cheating on his dying wife (personal matter, doncha know), and yet were happy to put unsubstantiated (and apparently bogus) rumors of a McCain affair with a lobbyist on page one of the NYT (public's right to know, even if it's untrue, doncha know).

The conclusion is inescapable: the media have their thumbs - hell, their elbows - on the scale. The idea is to get them thinking, and evaluating information - and its source - critically.

From that, all else follows.

167 #167  I agree.  My daughter moved back home when her marriage broke up.  She is a democrat and was an Obama voter.

I have spent the last year pointing out how there were things she didn't know: Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, John Edwards, Christmas tree tax, forced buying of health insurance, etc.

I never blame this on her.  I ALWAYS talk about how the media is covering up things and distracting everyone with American Idol and stuff.  I even criticize Fox for this,  which makes me look impartial.

She told me last week she will vote for ANYONE on the GOP ticket in order to get rid of Obama,  because she thinks he is destroying the country.

It can be done.  It's not easy.  Making the media the villain is a good way to get people to blame THEM and switch without looking foolish.

3. The irony of the end of the Cold War. A once large defense establishment kept CA safely GOP for years, but now it is gone.

These same people are exporting themselves to NV and CO.

Take heart--NO, they are not. The CA refugees going to NV, CO, AZ are largely White, largely conservative (save for abortions and pot legalization) and don't like what has happened to their state.

The type of people who will automatically and reflexively vote for Democrats, regardless of the economic consequences, because to them it is a sign of sophistication and intelligence and elitism.

Nope. The elites stayed behind. They are the "green" ecofiends, the Rule Of The Anus Left who wants to indoctrinate the kids, and the Professional Tenured Profs. These people run CA now and rely on stoking the resentful ethnics to keep them in office.

180 Curmudgeon @176:
I fear that the people you describe in your comment will cut off their noses to spite their face. I've seen them do it over and over and over again. Abortion trumps ALL other issues with them. If they are faced with a pro-life Republican, they will vote Democrat. Even if they knew that voting Dem would mean they'd lose their job, their house, their country, and every other freedom except "reproductive freedom," they would vote against the Republican. They are willing to give up every other freedom except the freedom to abort legally. It's bizarre, it's perverse, but it's a fact. Count on it.

Just as, last spring, the Dems threatened to have a government shutdown rather than cut funding for Planned Parenthood. I'm telling you, the abortion franchise trumps every other concern.

We're going to lose the United States of America because Americans simply will not give up killing one-third of their children before birth.

Michigan is in the bag for the GOP.

In 2010, a republican won the governorship against an Obama loyalist that had the total backing of the unions by 20 points.  The unions and the automotive business are not the driving forces that they used to be.

Macomb county is the critical swing area filled with Reagan democrats.  Last month, the Detroit Free Press (a radically liberal paper) polled and found that:

“In a head-to-head matchup statewide, Romney tops Obama 46%-41% in the poll.”

“In Macomb, where Obama received 53% of the vote in 2008, the president trails Romney, 68%-20%. Even controlling for a high margin of error because of a small sample size in the county, Obama trails Romney in Macomb by at least 20 percentage points.”

“The other top two Republican presidential candidates, Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich, also lead the president in Macomb, though not in Oakland.

Obama's problem lies with independent voters, who helped him win three years ago but now favor Romney in Michigan and several other swing states.

"I will not vote before I (will) vote for him, and I've voted in every election since I was 18," said Karen Ranoni, 37, of Shelby Township, who backed Obama in 2008. "I just think it's been broken promise after broken promise."

185 Obama won 2008 outspending a rather weak candidate 4 to 1 and got 53-54% of the vote.... with all of Owe-bama's broken promises, lies and corruption I just can't believe he has lost less than 4% pts in popularity no matter who the nominee is.... and he is still a SCOAMF
